"cat /dev/audio" as solution to strange audio-noise?

With my Macbook Pro (2,2), I hear a strange noise when I connect a loudspeaker to the earphone output that isn't there when I use the internal loudspeakers.
The issue vanishes when I listen to music for example. And appears again as soon as I clouse the player.
interestingly, when I enter "cat /dev/audio" in a console, then the noise disappears! And I can still listen to music and everything else!
I see then many lines of something like "
|z{{{{{{{{|{{{{{{z|{z{{{|{{{{{{{|{{|{{|{{{{{{{|{{{{|{{{{{{||{{|{{{{{|{{{{{|{{{{{|z{{{"
Any idea what the problem could be?

ebonyhack!!! You genius!!!
I've recently bought brand new quad core beast, with loads of memory, twin 20" cinema screens, apogee duet, Logic Pro Studio 8, Novation keyboard with automap. The reason I bought this lot was because it is all designed to work seamlessly with each other. And with a mac (my first ever), it wouldn't have all those lovely windows / PC issues I had to put up with for years.
Setup was an utter doddle - easy peasy - it all recognised the other components and worked like a dream, until ............................... first song, three instruments, three audio tracks, HUNDREDS (I am not exaggerating) of error message 10011! It is impossible to record vocals when the darned track keeps crashing! Vocalists get very annoyed. Critical listening to your mix is a complete joke, so you waste hours - no - days of your life bouncing, listening, changing the mix, bouncing, etc, etc, etc.
I have gone through so many of these threads, trying all the "fixes" offered, with no success at all.
Just read this thread, unticked that I/O box, loaded up three songs into memory (just for fun!), played the one which crashed most frequently, waited, and waited .............. and waited - and it played right through! First time since I'd got more than the first track or two written! Did the same with the next song - worked perfectly!!!
Early days as yet, but thanks so much - I love you.

  • Large Scale Audio Conferencing Solution

    Hi all,
I am researching into an audio conferencing solution that can support up to 150+ concurent participants. Anyone has the infrastructure in place to support this many concurent participants ? please share what you're currently using.
    Thanks in advance !!

    Hi Danny,
If you are interesting in on-premise Audio Conferencing solution, Cisco offers Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.5 solution. You can find out more about this solution here:

  • MeetingPlace Express 7 or 8 basic audio only solution...help!

I have a customer with an existing UC 7.1.x cluster (a la carte licence) and a legacy MeetingPlace Express 2.1.1.2 solution providing audio conferencing only. The customer now wishes to up-grade the MeetingPlace solution to a latter version for support purposes and to increase the number of ports.
All that is required is the ability to schedule audio conferences and hold ad-hoc meetings; the solution requires 52 audio ports. There are no requirements for Webex external meetings, web or video; all that’s needed is simple audio bridging.
Am I right in thinking that the MCS Node for MP8 has no Webx VoIP/Video support, is an internal solution and is deployed on a single server (MCS)? Looking at various Cisco docs it’s also suggested that a Webex account is still required as MediaTone is extended to site?
Any advise would be greatly received!

Thank you, as I noted here, your post was the key to my getting a Windows 8 SecureBooting setup on a W530.
In the case of Windows 8, I needed to copy the files away, reformat my USB key as FAT32 and copy the files back, and viola I was able to boot from my USB install media with the BIOS set to only boot UEFI.  From there, there rest was easy (for Windows 8, the copying and renaming is not necessary, the key is having a FAT32 partition on the USB media, rather than an NTFS one; the EFI files are already in the right location).
    Thank you again good sir.
You are welcome... and I'm happy that the change of the file system helps with windows 8 too. Thanks for confirming that.

  • [solved] Strange Audio Issue

I am experiencing a strange audio issue with my Intel-HDA ICH7:
    # lspci -v
00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30a5
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
    Memory at d2400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
    Capabilities: <access>
when I installed Arch linux the first time a mounth ago on this computer, I had a sound problem that was solved in a very strange way.
Everything worked fine until a week or so (I believe from Alsa 1.0.12). Now sometimes sound works and sometimes it doesn't. For example sometime I boot the computer and have no sound, then I reboot it without doing anything, and then sound works.
I have tried messing with the modprobe.conf:
    # /etc/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    # --- ALSACONF version 1.0.11 ---
    #alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    #alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    #options snd-hda-intel model=F1734
    options snd-hda-intel model=z71v
    options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
but it was useless. If I put back the modules in rc.conf everything is worse: sound doesn't work at all.
A diff between lsmod in a "working boot" and a "without sound boot" showed that the same modules where in kernel memory.
A diff between dmesg showed this difference:
    < hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
was present in the not working boot. This line is absent in a working boot dmesg.
The only way to make the sound card working everytime is to remove the snd* modules load from the boot sequence and load the modules "by hand" after the login.
    Any ideas?
PS : If something is unclear due to my poor English please tell my and I'll try to explain it better.

phrakture wrote:snd-hda-intel is screwed up - on my thinkpad I had to go into the bios and enable the modem for sound to work.  Oddly enough, the modem was off by default.
Also, mine has no PCM listed, I need to use "front" as my PCM level... not to mention the UI is way off with 'tpb' (if you have a thinkpad)
Yes it's not an Arch Linux related problem: I had problems with Debian (Etch and Sid based distros like ubuntu) too (but there I had no modprobe issue on the init sequence. Maybe is a problem of shared IRQs, but I have to study the existing documentation as I am a newbie). The difference is that Arch is simple enought for me to try something like modprobing "by hand" in the init sequence. PCM seems to work, however the volume is very low and I have found no way to make the mic work. Under Mepis I was able to make it work only if I plugged it in windows xp and then reboot into Linux. But I can't try it with Arch as I have erased the windows partition...
I will try the new kernel, study the documentation and then report. Hoping this will be usefull to others too.

  • Audio merge solution while capturing?

    Hi guys,
I am trying to mix the capturing audio with another audio file. For that i used the Merge.java code from JMF solutions.
I did some modification in the code. What i did is
created three processors one for capturing audio second for background audio file and third for output processor as used in the merge code.
I am stopping and closing the output processor when i want to stop the capture audio. The output audio file contains merged audio but with whole background audio file.
I want the output file upto I stops the capture. How should i do this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Audio and video track strangeness

    Hi,
I have a few camera angles that have 4 audio tracks associated with them, and other camera angles that are just one track...
I was attempting to stack all of my camera angles in fcp, so that I could sync the audio up for the various angles, and then cut between them and drag various pieces to the top video track (I assume this is a standard way of working).
Anyway, so the problem I was experiencing was, I had one video track with one audio track, and then the next video track above that had 4 audio tracks connected to it... So if I tried to take a slice of the 1st video track, and move it to the next track, the audio would go ontop of one of the 4 tracks....
I thought I could solve this by locking the video and deleting 3 of the audio tracks so everything would just have 1 audio channel (I dont need the other 3 for my editing purposes)... However, it still causes the audio to behave oddly and jump 2 tracks rather than one....
How do I fix this?? I don't even understand what is really happening here.
    -p

Hmm after looking at it, it seems that what's happening is even though 1 audio track is assigned to each video track, FCP thinks that there should be 2 audio tracks? So when I move a video track to the next video channel, the audio is moving down two audio tracks instead of one...
Ok, so atleast I do understand WHAT is happening, I just don't know why.

  • Strange audio problem playback

I have what's probably an easy problem but can't find an
answer anywhere here. When using "Play" or using the return key to
preview my project in Flash 8 on OS X, I can't stop the audio. The
audio is an MP3 voice over.
Pressing "Stop" or using the return key again stops the
playhead, but the audio continues no matter what I do. I can go
back to the beginning and play it again, and now I'll have two VOs
going on at once. The only way I can get the audio to stop is by
    closing out the project.
This is making timing my animation to match what the VO is
    saying very difficult. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem, but only after reinstalling XP
and all my software on a new hard drive. My previous hard drive
hadn't had a fresh install of XP in three years and was giving me
intermittent problems. However my swf's work properly on the old
drive but not the new one. I'm guessing it's one of my updates of
Firefox, flash player (was using 9,0,28,0 but now am 9,0,45,0). My
scenario is complicated because I'm using Flash Media Server, but
again it works on one drive and not the other. The odd thing for me
is that if I create my swf on the new drive with 9,0,45,0 and then
play it back when I boot from the old drive, it still has the same
double audio problem that plays similar to you. My play/pause
button has no effect and the audio just keeps going. If I do pause
the audio and wait for my audio to finish and then hit play again,
my scrubber bar moves but nothing plays until it gets to the end
and starts over. I was also getting double audio at times as well.
Could this be the new player??? Have you figured anything out since
you posted last? I'm using XP, flash 8, Firefox 2.0.0.4.

  • Strange audio sync problems

I was experiencing problems similar to those I've read in other threads here, where AIFF files imported into FCP were gradually drifting out of sync. On my current project, I switched the audio to MOV files instead hoping that would alleviate the problem, but it didn't. Here's the situation I most recently encountered:
I have a 7-minute film which is broken up into three QuickTime MOV files, each file containing both video and audio. I also have the audio saved in a separate audio-only MOV file. When I place the three video segments sequentially in an After Effects timeline and then drop in the audio file, the audio file is exactly as long as the video, to the frame, and it sounds perfectly in sync throughout. But when I drop the EXACT SAME FILES into FCP, the audio file is 10 frames shorter than the video. Listening to it, it the audio file starts almost imperceptibly out of sync with the embedded audio in the video files, but this gets worse over the course of the 7 minutes until it sounds way out of sync (by 10 frames).
Anyone have any idea what's up?

Wow.... funny thing... I've had the same problem for YEARS..... And this is why I'm here... to ask this EXACT same question.....
here's my story.. I work at a computer research facility... we record hour long lectures on our sony HDV Camera...
we also record the un-eq'd audio, for editing purposes, using Logic Express v. 7.1.1 on a Powermac tower w/ a 933 mhz G4 processor... 1 gig ram..... OS X v. 10.4.10....
the microphone interface is a maudio octane preamp into the maudio Delta 1010... w/ pci interface...
This Powermac is dedicated to capturing audio... nothing else.
Right now I'm editing on a dual 3 ghz quad-core Intel MacPro w/ 8 gigs of ram... OSX v. 10.4.11 (won't upgrade to Leopard till the bugs are gone)... But I've been on the top of the line Mac's for 5 or so years... G5's... Dual G5's... Quad G5's..... you name it... and each machine has had the problem (yet to be described)....
    My workflow is:
Raw HDV.... > captured directly into Final Cut Pro... > Import the 44.1 (or 48 khz.. no difference) aif file created by Logic Express on the "Audio capturing Mac"... (16 and 24 bit... doesn't make a difference) ... then I'm prepared to work....
    THE PROBLEM....
I place the video on the timeline.... it's got a stereo audio track with it that is synced PERFECTLY with the video......... then... i place the "un-eq'd" audio on the timeline.... Sync up the beginning frames... the audio and video fit perfectly together at the beginning of the talk...... 30 or so minutes into it, the audio has gradually shifted to being a quarter or so second off.... by the end of the talk.... the audio and video have about a second or more gap between them...
The problem isn't the camera... We've recorded talks for 5-6 years with multiple DV and HDV cameras.... we've always had the same problems..
The problem isn't the "audio capturing computer"... we had a G5 in there, but figured it was WAY too much overkill to have that machine in there just capturing 1, 2, 3, or even 4 audio tracks every couple of weeks or so...
The problem isn't hard drive speed... we've had multiple hard drives.... on multiple machines... no difference....
as far as we can tell... it's not hardware...
I've been to Macworld and WWDC... Talked to Apple's engineers about the problem.... nothing..... I've had apple's video support on the phone.... nothing...
no one in the entire industry seems to know what our problem is....
we've done basically everything you can think of...
The problem is really annoying... but I've been working around it for years.....
    got any ideas?

  • Boosting audio - quick solution anyone?

Hi there - I remember in a back issue of iCreate that you could boost audio levels further by exporting and re-importing an audio clip. In theory you may do this over and over.
Can any one shed any light on how to achieve this?
I know its in a back issue and i thought it would be quicker and easier to ask the pros here.
    Thanks guys.
    Pete in London

You could also download the free trial version of Sound Studio ..hmm, thinks: is the free version still available?.. or Audacity ..which is free!.. or any similar audio editing program.
Then double-click on the extracted audio clip to get the name which the computer calls it (..probably 'Voice 01', or some such..) as distinct from any name which may appear on it if you renamed the video clip before extracting its audio.
Then start the audio editing program, and click on File and Open, and navigate to where the audio clip is stored: that means inside your Movies folder (probably), inside the name of your project, and inside the Media folder within that. (..If trying to find your audio clips just from your Mac's Finder window, right-click, or ctrl-click on the name of your movie, and choose 'Show Package Contents').
Once your audio clip has opened in Sound Studio, Audacity, or whatever, you can adjust the audio level as much as you want, as shown here, but using the 'Filter' and 'Amplify Volume...' menu.
Then use File and Save, and that immediately makes alterations to the original clip within iMovie (..the extracted clip called 'Voice 01' or whatever).
You'll be able to boost the audio that way as much as you could ever want.
HOWEVER: be aware that boosting audio boosts all that bit of audio. So if you have a person talking quietly, boosting it will also boost any background sound which may be present, such as wind noise, general hubbub of conversation in the background, clock ticking, car engine running, or whatever else was on the original audio. So boosting it won't separate a quiet voice from background noise. If boosting the audio also boosts background hiss, you may be able to filter out some of the hiss using the Filter menu in Sound Studio, or whatever audio program you're using. If that doesn't do it, an expensive program like SoundSoap may (..or may not..) be able to remove a constant background noise such as hiss, rumble, fizz, etc, but can NOT remove variable things like background conversation, background music, wind noise, etc.
So boosting imperfect audio just makes the imperfections louder!

  • Problems with sound drivers - audio device on high definition audio bus

i turned on my computer one day and the sound was gone. no "speaker" icon in the lower right-hand corner of the screen; no choices available via the "control panel: sounds and audio devices" icon. when i went to device manager, i saw "audio device on high definition audio bus" had a yellow exclamation mark. i saw some sites suggested downloading the realtek high definition audio, but that didn't seem to work -- and now i don't see the audio device on high definition audio line either.
any ideas? from what i've read, i gather this is a somewhat common problem but no solid way to fix this. i know something similar has happened to me a year ago but i was able to fix it somehow.

    Hello,
Have you tried installing the latest audio device drivers for your ThinkPad?  If so, did that solve the problem?

  • T61 - No sound - Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus with yellow exclamation mark

    Hi,
I am not sure when it started but suddenly my T61 has no audio/sound. I checked the Device Manager and did see the Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus with yellow (big) question mark with yellow exclamation mark superimposed on it. I downloaded, from Lenovo Support site, the 7ka114ww.exe , hoping to fix it by un-install that device, reboot it,  and re-install using the download exe file, but to no avail.
Any suggestion or help is really appreciated. Many thanks in advance
PS. I also see the Base System Device pop up after a reboot and ask to be installed ?!? That pop-up had been there for a while before the audio/sound was lost.
    Solved!

    Hi Maliha,
I followed your instruction to execute the exe file under C:\Drivers. After that, I rebooted the system and no more error pop up for the missing audio device. I checked the Device Manager and the Audio Device on High Definition Audion Bus disappeared and the SoundMax was shown. But again, still no sound. I clicked on TroubleShooting on that SoundMax and followed that instruction. I found out the default Sound device was erroneously pointed to BlueTooth. I made the change to SoundMax and voila ... the sweet ding sound came back.
That was a wonderful feeling to be able to fix  this nagging problem that my company HelpDesk could not help me. All thank to this forum and particular Maliha. Again, my appreciation to the valuable help.

  • Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus Prob

I installed a Sound Blaster Audigy SE and it's drivers, but when I restarted my computer Windows told me?that it'sdetected even more hardware. (Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus) I tried using the drivers included with the Sound Blaster CD for it, but they didn't work. Regardless, my sound works and I can see "Sound Blaster Audigy" under sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager; however, I also see "" listed under other devices with a yellow question mark next to it. Does anyone know what's wrong?
Thank you for your time.Message Edited by YSM on 02-7-200804:33 PM

    Hello,
I have a feeling that this device refers to your onboard soundcard. You haven't mentioned which motherboard you have, but I suppose it's one which features a high definition audio codec, probably a Realtek one.
So, the solution to your problem should be the following:
If you have english windows, put the motherboard's CD into the dri've an go to the "sound" or similar named folder and look for a "microsoft UAA something" folder, containing a KB888.exe file. Install this hotfix and then install the audio drivers of the motherboard (you will have 2 operational soundcards afterwards).
There is a small variation to that, if your windows are non-english. Motherboard manufacturers usually include only the english version of the UAA hotfix on the CD. In that case, you must download the multilanguage package of the hotfix. Unfortunately, microsoft doesn't offer it for download, so go to www.gigabyte.com.tw and look for any motherboard with onboard HD audio. Gigabyte offers the multilingual package for download.
Alternati'vely, you can disable the onboard audio from your BIOS and use only your Audigy

  • Final Cut 7 audio sync issue with external audio

Ok, I've seached around a lot and still haven't found the solution for this common issue, which is sync between video and audio wich were recorded in two different devices.
My video is from a conference (a lady speaking all the time) ProRess 29.97 and my audio is wav recorded at 44.1 Khz. I have already converted my external audio to a fine AIFF 48 Khz, and I have already re-imported it with the correct 29.97 easy setup, as it shows on this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt-nfelM8KA. That helped a lot but audio still goes out on sync when playback goes further (not that much, but it shows).
On Premiere Pro, that wav file a correctly in sync, and I have had this issue before with FCP and now it has come back! help!
Anyone found a real solution for this issue?

Why not just use Premier? FCP is going to slowly die out anyways....
Anyhow, a work around... using the speed change tool (sss) adjust the audio to be the same length of the video so it is in sync... Press command-J, make note of the percentage you sped up your audio. Now open your audio in STP, select all of your audio go to Process>Timestretch and adjust the audio and apply the same percentage.
Listen to your audio. STP's time stretch is excellent because it adjusts the speed without changing the pitch.
    Save as, re-import your audio.

  • Stream Live Video + Audio to Apple TV - No Audio

Hello, I am trying to setup an adhoc video conferencing solution
Streaming Live Video + Audio from a lecture theatre to a breakout room in the same building
So far I have tried 3 approaches over Airplay:
1: iPad Air (8.1) (as a camera + microphone) using the built in video app to stream to a Mac Mini (Yosemite), using Reflector
2: iPad Air (8.1) (as a camera + microphone) using the built in video app to stream to an Apple TV
3: Webcam connected to a Mac Mini to stream to an Apple TV
All 3 options show the Video however I can't hear the audio
I know that the audio is working because if I record a clip and play it back you can hear the audio on the TV
Can anybody recommend some software, either for the iPad or the Mac which would allow me to transmit the Video + Audio Live?
My preference is not to use a web based system, so that all data is kept on the local network
Thank you in advance for your help
    Jeremy

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.
