Cat4500 IOS/CatOS

I am totally confused about this switch I bought. My config is as follows
Supervisor II+ WS-X4013+
WS-X4232-GB-RJ
WS-X4232-RJ-XX
WS-X4232-RJ-XX
WS-X4148-RJ
I installed CiscoView 3, but can't see either of the 4232-RJ-XX modules.
From what I can gleam from the docs, I would have to control these modules using the build-in webserver on the Supv. engine or from the latest CAT4000
release.
My misunderstanding is that there is a CAT4500 Series Software Release 8.xGLX
and a then when I ran the Software Advisor, it recommended an image of
cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.122-25.SG.
Why the two releases, CatOS and IOS? And will either of them actually let me see/control the X4232-RJ-XX modules?
Thank you.

I’m unfamiliar with Cisco View 3 implementation but I found this document on the web. Hopefully it helps.

  • How to select a stable IOS version for switch ?

There isn't any GD version for switch. So how did I know which version is stable ?
    thanks!

    Hi there,
Usually the most efficient way of selecting a stable version of IOS/CatOS is to take a look through the release notes at the caveats section and verify if there are any issues that would affect your network directly. In addition, working with your local SE is a good idea, as they can offer you their design advice. Usually, a wise move is going with the latest release within a given branch is the most stable, as it includes the most bug fixes. I hope this helps.

  • Preparing for 3.3(4) to 4.2 Upgrade - Any issues?

We are preparing to upgrade ACS from 3.3(4) to 4.2 and are wondering if there are any gotchas we should look out for? We've upgraded in the lab and things look ok, but we are limitted to what we can test aganst in the lab. We have 300+ different device types/code rev combinations (mostly Cisco TACACS+, a few Radius) and are wondering if there are any known issues where a certain rev of code (IOS, CatOS) works with 3.3(4) but not 4.2.
    thanks in advance

Haven't heard of any yet on 4.2

  • CISCO MST (802.1S) config digest KEY calculation

    Hi,
We and others before us have checked that CISCO MST (802.1S) config digest KEY calculation was not done as expected by 802.1S:
the 16 bytes configuration digest in the BPDU from Cisco does not follow the recommendation of the 802.1s. They have different values compared with those value shown in 802.1s Table 13-2. So Cisco may not use HMAC-MD5 or the signature key as specified in 802.1s 13-7(4), and Table 13-1.
    CISCO MST white paper extract:
a digest of the VLANs-to-instance mapping table is sent, along with the revision number and the name. Once a switch receives a BPDU, the switch extracts the digest (a numerical value derived from the VLAN-to-instance mapping table through a mathematical function) and compares this digest with its own computed digest. If the digests differ, the port on which the BPDU was received is at the boundary of a region.
    Could anyone tell us:
    - how config digest key is currently calculated?
    - if it is planned to be compliant
    - if it is, when it is scheduled?
    - on what IOS/CATos platforms?
    Many thanks.
    Regards/Ludovic.

Cisco MST implementation was a pre-standard implementation because the software was created before the 802.1s standard was officially adopted.
    http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/bugtool/onebug.pl?bugid=CSCea38886
CAT OS 8.3(1) and later and newer 12.2 IOS are standard compliant

  • Rebooting switches and routers

Is it a good practice to reboot your switches and routers periodically and is there anything gained by doing this??

The only instance in which I would say this is unequivocally a good idea is one in which a known bug is causing, say, a memory leak which, uncorrected, will lead to a system crash. In that case, one would monitor memory usage and schedule preventitive maintenance reboots to forestall an unplanned outage.
Other than something like that, the practice of keeping one's IOS/CatOS relatively current (i.e., at least on a supported release) and analyzing new features for utility in your environment (or, more likely bug or vulnerability fixes) would more likely be the catalyst for introducing a new software version (and thus indirectly requiring a reboot to load the new code).
Hope this helps. Please rate it if it does.

  • Adding a vlan

    Hello,
We have a 4506 router/switch that we have been running 4 vlans on. I wanted to add anothe vlan, vlan 5 and configure two ports for this vlan. I created the vlan 5 and set these two ports for vlan5 but when I do a sh vlan command, their is no vlan 5 and nobody on vlan 5 gets the dhcp address range 192.168.128.0 255.255.224.0, it cannot find the dhcp server.
Any help or advice with a document or syntax useage is greatly welcome.
    TIA,
    Gary

how did you create the vlan?
do you have a 'VTP Server' switch running and you created it there?
do you have multiple switches and created it on a VTP Client?
if your switch is configured as a 'VTP Client', you will not be able to create vlans on it. you must create vlans on a VTP Server or VTP Transparent configured switch.
the configuration commands depend on the OS running; either CatOS or IOS:
CatOS - (must be run on VTP Server or VTP Transparent configured switch only)
switch>(enable) set vlan 5 name NEWVLAN
    switch>(enable) set vlan 5 2/3-4
these commands create the vlan 5 named NEWVLAN and then adds the ports 2/3 & 2/4 to vlan 5
IOS - (must be run on VTP Server or VTP Transparent configured switch only)
(there are two ways to configure vlans; globalConfigMode or vlanDatabaseMode)
    globalConfigurationMode -
    switch(config)# vlan 5
    switch(config-vlan)# end
    switch# show vlan id 5
    or
    switch# show vlan
    vlanDatabaseMode -
    switch(config)# vlan database
    switch(config-vlan)# vlan 5
    switch(config-vlan)end
    switch# show vlan 5
    switch(config)# interface 3/1-2
    switch(config-if)# switchmode access vlan 5
    switch(config)# end
the above commands create a vlan with ID 5 and add the two ports, 3/1 & 3/2 to vlan 5.
be sure to check your VTP configuration on the switch you are attempting to create the new vlan on.
please see the following links for more info on 4500 vlan configuration:

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps4324/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008007d8ff.html
NOTE: you'll need to configure interVLAN routing if your DHCP server does not exist on vlan 5 or you need vlan 5 to communicate with other vlans.

  • Snmp mib browser

Please suggest me some good mib browsers
Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPhone App

Here is a step by step of how to find an MIB and it's OID details :
    a)       Select the product family in the following link :
         http://www.cisco.com/public/sw-center/netmgmt/cmtk/mibs.shtml
    b)       Select the OS…. IOS/CatOS
    c)       From the list select the MIB for feature for which you want to find the OID
( for example BGP ). This will give you a complete list of all MIB for a particular feature.
    d)           Now copy any single MIB name from the file ( for example we select  bgpPeerTable )
    e)           Paste this MIB name in the following tool ( SNMP object Navigator )to retrieve the OID :
          http://tools.cisco.com/Support/SNMP/do/BrowseOID.do
For eg if we put “bgpPeerTable” we get “1.3.6.1.2.1.15.3”

Would you know what the differences are between 4 (createAndGo) and 5 (createAndWait), specifically which one would you choose to commit a "write mem"?
Secondly, how is the random number below generated? Is that my choice?

  • Supervisory engine, backplane switching, line cards

    Hello,
i have a couple of questions and they are thus:
1.Is the line card a module or are they different parts of the switch. What is the function of the line card ?
2.From my understanding the supervisory engine is like the brain of the device. It controls all or most of the software related functionality of the device. Am I correct?
3.What is the difference between the SUP720 and SUP32?
4.Is the CatOS solely for layer 2 switching while the IOS is for routing?
    5. when we refer to backplane does that mean how fast a switch switches packets ?
    Best Regards,
    DJ.

    Hello,
    Please find below answers inline,
1.Is the line card a module or are they different parts of the switch. What is the function of the line card ?
Yes, Linecards/Modules are different part of the switch. You can insert multiple cards into the Chassis. You can also have service moduels like Wism/FWSM/ACE
    depends upon the business needs.
2.From my understanding the supervisory engine is like the brain of the device. It controls all or most of the software related functionality of the device. Am I correct?
Yes, Supervisor is the brain of the switch controls each function. A typical Supervisor consists of PFC which has TCAM L2/L3 Engines and RP/SP Processor and A replication engine (Hyperion) for Multicast. TCAM is the area where the RP/SP programmes the switch. There are multiple things that get programmed in TCAM like QoS/ACL/Netflow etc.
They have their respective hardware entries in the TCAM. If the entry is not found that is when the packet gets punted to CPU. If the linecard has a DFC on it then it can download the information from L2/L3 Engines from TCAM and switching gets fast as everytime the lookup happens in the Linecard instead of the Supervisor.
3.What is the difference between the SUP720 and SUP32?
SUp 32 : 32Gb backplane supporting hardware accelerated Layer 2 and 3, QoS and Security policies up to 15Mpps…
Sup 720: 720Gb backplane supporting hardware accelerated Layer 2 and 3, QoS and Security policies up to 400Mpps…
4.Is the CatOS solely for layer 2 switching while the IOS is for routing?
If you have a hybrid switch with CATOS/MSFC(IOS) CATos represents the switching part and MSFC represents the Routing part of the network.
    5. when we refer to backplane does that mean how fast a switch switches packets ?
Backplane is used for communication between SUP - LC's.The area divided into three subsections,
    1) D-bus - Used for data flow
    2) R-bus - Used for result lookups
    3) EOBC - Control communications like IPC/ScP which is helps the Supervisor to maintain the other line cards.
Depends on the line card the backplane can work in three different modes,
    1) Flowthrough
Between non fabric modules and between a non fabric and a fabric enabled linecard
    Throughput – 15 Mpps (@ 64 byte frames)
Bandwidth – 16 Gbps of bandwidth shared throughout
Data Bus frame size is variable; min of 4 cycles (64B Data) on the DBus for every frame +1 wait cycle
    2) compact
When only ALL fabric enabled linecards in a chassis
Throughput – 30 Mpps (@ any frame size)
    Bandwidth – 8 G CEF256; 20 G/channel CEF720
Data Bus frame size is constant (compact header); 2 cycles (32 B Data) on the DBus for every frame + no wait cycle
    3) truncated
Between fabric linecards when a non fabric linecard is in the chassis.
Throughput – 15 Mpps (@ 64 byte frames); independent of frame size for CEF256 and CEF720
    Bandwidth – 16 G shared for classic; 8 G per CEF256; 20 G/channel CEF720.
Data Bus frame size is variable; min of 4 cycles (64 Bytes Data) on the Data Bus for every frame.
    Thanks,

  • What IOS command similar to catos command 'set port vtp X disable'

    Hi,
Does anyone know if a similar command of catos command 'set port vtp X disable' exists in native IOS (12.1E or 12.2SX) on cat6500?
We still can play in native IOS with VTP pruning, transparent mode but it seems that we can no more disable VTP on a particular port/interface.
    Many thanks.
    Regards/Ludovic.

While one may not be able to disable VTP directly, I would think you could use a MAC ACL against the VTP MAC address of 01-00-0C-CC-CC-CC. (See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/tech/tk389/tk689/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094c52.shtml for details on how that addressing works.)

  • Command conversion from CatOS 8.4 to IOS 15.0SY

Upgrading an old 6509 running CatOS  to a new 6509E running IOS 15.0SY.  The switch is a core switch that does not have any phones plugged into it but does support voip traffic across the enterprise.  The qos on the switch is as follows
    #qos
    set qos enable
    set qos map 1p2q2t tx 1 2 cos 0
    set qos map 1p2q2t tx 2 1 cos 2

    set qos wred 1p2q2t tx queue 2 70:80 80:100
What type of qos should I use on the new switch to achieve the same functionality as the old switch?
    Thanks

    Hi
The answer will actually depend on what traffic you want to prioritize and how much you want to prioritize.
Or you have special requirements like limiting the bandwidth or something like that.
I'd say at the initial stage auto qos is the best option and in case you face any issues tweak it accordingly as you go.
    Thanks

  • 6509 conversion from CatOS to IOS

I am interested in hearing from those who have converted from CatOS to IOS using 6500 as primarily a LAN switch with InterVLAN routing. Are there valid reasons / advantages to running IOS over CatOS? It seems to me that the CatOS is more efficient language for configuring switch ports and the IOS is better for configuring routing. I use 6509 in the core for server farms mostly and with the integration of many IOS based switches (3750) I am considering migrating the 6509 to IOS as well.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Greg,
Cisco may support CATOS for a while, but I do think that they may end of life it in the future. Thats why there is a big push on the IOS over CATOS.
I feel that the IOS is equally efficient in configuring switch ports as CATOS. You can use interface range commands to configure common parameters to a range of switch ports. And the great thing about configuring switchports in IOS is that it will have the same syntax like your 3750 switches.
Here is a link that compares commands on both switches which will help a lot after migration.
