Catalog in both lightroom 3 and 4

I am taking classes in Digital Photo at the local college.  They are using Lightroom 3 and I have Lightroom 4.1 at home.  Need to edit images both at home and at school.  Lightroom 4 catalogs cannot be read in Lightroom 3.  Is there any way to edit a catalog in both versions?

There is no way that one catalog file can be used in both LR3 and LR4.
However, individual photos can be edited in Process 2010 in both LR3 and LR4, and if you save the Metadata to the files (Ctrl-S on Windows), you should be able to transfer photos back and forth and maintain the edits and other metadata. Your edit history will not transfer, collection status will not transfer, and a few other things will not transfer, but final edited position and keywords and captions and titles and some other things (too many to list) will transfer.

Yes, of course. They are separate things - while technically identical, there are simply different licensing models, but this is not in any way apparent in the demo versions.

  • Continual problem with the Adjustment brush in both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4

The Adjustment brush in both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4 continually stops functioning correctly - that is any adjustment made using the sliders in the Adjustment Brush panel does not make an adjustment on the image.      Normally I would go to Library / Preferences [on my iMac OSX 10.6.8], remove the com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist file and restart Lightroom.     However I have gone to Library/Preferences and there is no listing of any Lightroom 3 plist files, nor for that matter any adobe Photoshop CS5 plist files or any adobe Lightroom 4 plist files.      I have tried restarting the iMac but to no avail - no help at all!      I have no idea how to remedy the situation as I have no idea where the plist files have gone!!!
Incidentally I have a new iMac 27" OSX 10.8 - same problem with the Adjustment Brush there, but so far the plist files haven't disappeared into the ether somewhere!
    Help would be appreciated  ...
    Many thanks

    Hi Jussi
I tried changing to the B brush set, and the Adjustment Brush worked OK in there for a while - but now I have the same problem with the B brush set too.     It appears to happen instantly - one minute they're working, the next minute they're not!!         For example, I was adjusting Brightening using the Adjustment Brush and I literally made an adjustment on one image, then went back into the same image seconds later to make a further Brightening adjustment and the brush wasn't working - well, that is, not unless I pushed the slider to something like 160 and then I got minimal adjustment!!!       I am becoming increasingly frustrated  ..   I have literally worked for months with no problems, now it's almost every day!!

  • Anyone Have both Lightroom 4 and Ps CS6 beta?

Specifically, a friend of mine is reporting relatively sluggish performance with Lightroom 4 and I am seeing light, fast performance with Photoshop CS6's Camera Raw 7...  Maybe it's not butter smooth, but my preview display in Camera Raw definitely keeps up in near real-time with slider movements.  Our computers, per their Windows WEI scores, aren't too different in performance.
Apparently LR4 is MUCH slower for him than the prior version.
Should Lightroom be expected to be much slower than its predecessor version and Camera Raw 7?  Or is there a bug being worked on?
I've stopped short of running the Lightroom evaluation version as I am happy with what I have.
Thanks for any insights you can share.
    -Noel

Most likely the reason for the color difference has to do with your working color space. Lightroom doesn't allow you to chose your working colorspace (whereas camera raw borrows from bridge and photoshop). In lightroom use the "softproof" and chose your output colorspace to see what your images will look like. It could also be that your images coming out of lightroom are being output with a different color profile from what photoshop is saving your images as : adobe rbg VS srgb.  In my tests my images from photoshop and lightroom looked the same as long as they were both saved to the same colorspace ( I use srgb)
Noel - sorry for the vague question. I know that some people use lightroom vs ACR for its price. Some use it for it photo managing aspects compared to bridge. I was wondering if in any of your use or anything that you had seen posted if you had seen people choosing lightroom for performance related reasons. (import of raw images - editing - exporting)

I am also using both CS5 and LR4. For some unknown reason, CS5 Camera Raw appears to do a better job than LR4. Perhaps it is the darker interface that make the photo look ok in LR4. When the same photos are compared against Camera Raw later, the LR4 all have this slight warm colour hue. I also find the steps required to open a file from Camera Raw to CS5 much easier than from LR4

  • Can I have both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 5 both installed on the same computer?

Can I have both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 5 both installed on the same computer? I like the "fill light" feature in 3 and use it a lot. I would have not gotten 5 except that the images from my new Canon 5D Mk III are not re4cognized on 3. I have 5 on a laptop and 3 on my desktop but would like to have both on my desktop .

Yes you can do this, but you can also get rid of Lightroom 3 and use the "Fill Light" command in Lightroom 5. You need to set the Process Version to 2010 (default is 2012 in Lightroom 5). Use the menu command  Settings > Process > 2010
But honestly, you would be wise to stop using "Fill Light", as the new sliders in Lightroom 5 produce superior image quality than anything you can come up with using "Fill Light". Yes, the new sliders take a little time to get used to, but your patience and effort learning the new sliders will be rewarded. You can find some tutorials and videos on using Process Version 2012 on that Internet thing.

  • Both Lightroom 4 and 5 won't open. Help Please.

I tried installing lightroom 4 on two different pcs. Both running Windows 8 32bits. When the installation is done, I try to open it. LR does shows up in the "dock" on the bottom of the screen, but it doesn't open.
If I put the arrow/mice on it, it shows up in small the registration screen. But it just won't shows up.
I tried with LR 5, thinking the problem would be solved. But no. Still nothing.
Here's a screenshot to help you get a better understanding of the situation.
If I click on it. It won't shows up.
I had LR4 with Windows 7 and it worked great. Is Windows 8 the problem ? Is there a solution beside downgrading to Windows 7? Althout, I had no problem with the LR5 beta on Windows 8.

May be one of these windows shortcuts can help you:
The full list of keyboard shortcuts includes:
Win+Home: Clear all but the active window.
Win+Space: All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop.
Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window.
Shift+Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window vertically.
Win+Down arrow: Minimize the window/Restore the window if it's maximized.
Win+Left/Right arrows: Dock the window to each side of the monitor.
Shift+Win+Left/Right arrows: Move the window to the monitor on the left or right.

  • Am I able to use one catalog in both pse 8 and 11

I have restored PSE 11 onto my computer, but wonder if and how, I can also use this same catalogue on PSE 8, which is also installed on the same computer.  I would therefore have 2 back-ups, and in some respects I prefer PSE 8 to work on.  Having once lost my entire Organizer, I like backing-up as a much as possible, with 63,000 pictures catalogued.  Thanks.
Message title was edited by: Brett N

Catalogs are designed to work only in a single version of Photoshop Elements. They can be converted to work in a newer version of Elements, but they cannot go backward. Mainly this is controlled by the file extention on the catalog itself, and there may be hacks that can make an Elements 11 catalog work in Elements 8, but these are definitely not recommended as they are likely to lead to corruption of the catalog. There is definitely no way to use the same catalog in multiple version at once.

  • Re-installing Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6

I intend to upgrade Windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit, which apparently means a clean install. Can I back up both Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 for re-installation or will I have to make a fresh install from the discs. Furthermore CS6 was an upgrade to CS4 so will I also have to reinstall CS4. Will I need to deactivate or can I save the activation details?

Lightroom: No activation required so you can just reinstall. Download the latest 4.x release and install it rather than from your disk and upgrading - it is just cleaner.
PS, you need to deactivate on the existing machine. Install CS6 upgrade first and when prompted provide your CS4 information. Then activate on the new machine.

  • Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool

In both Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool with horizontal images. Im running Lightroom on a Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac with 32 GB of memory with OS 10.8.4, this problem has gotten worse and worse to the point where the crop tool is unusable. Please help!

    Alright,
no replies so far! Anyways, here's some more information which is leading me to the conclusion that the bug causing the effect described above is a combination of Apple's SMB implementation of Mavericks and the way Lightroom is actually using SMB network access:
I did another trial by connecting a USB hard drive to the USB port of my router (Netgear). The connection is quite slow, but moving one of the folders in question (see my 1st post above) to the shared drive connected to the Router made Lightroom on my Windows machine to see the photos again, when I told Lightroom where to find the moved folder!
Everything was working as expected, on the Windows machine again! Moving the folder back again to the Mac Mini fileshare was causing Lightroom on the PC to get blind again for the pictures trying to sync or import. However, accessing and modifying a photo was possible again, like it was before the trial. So it's only the sync and import function having a problem!
I also did some trial in re-building ACLs and access rights on the file server with no luck. So there's got to be a functionality in sync and import of Lightroom which is using a certain SMB feature which is not supported by Apple's SMB implementation!
    Any thoughts or hints?
    Thanks!

    Hi all
So I have lightroom on both my laptop and desktop and sync catalog through google drive.
I have been working on the desktop all week on edits of high res scan in lightroom.
Today i opened the program to find everything i have done for a week isn't there.
    Help.
I feel it has synced to the last time i opened on my laptop and lost what ive on on the desktop.
    any help much appreciated.

I have no idea what happened, why you are seeing what you are seeing.
My only guess at finding the missing work is to look under File->Open Recent on both computers.
I do know that if you aren't making regular backups of your catalog file, and relying on synchronizing catalogs from one computer to another via the cloud, you are living very dangerously, and now you are possibly going to pay the consequences of not making regular backups.

  • LR5 - one catalog to work on both Mac-OSX and PC-Windows versions of Lightroom ?

    Hi,
I need help to determine if this workflow has a chance to work.
PC-Windows computer is at home, I travel with MacBook Air with OSX system.
I place a job in a catalog that is located in a 'dropbox' folder, so a folder that auto-synchronizes itself on both the Mac & PC.
Will I be able to edit photos inside the very same one LR5-catalog on both Mac & PC or a PC-created catalog cannot be opened on Mac ?
What I basically want to achieve is have raw files on PC, start work on PC, but when I try I wanted to use SMart Previews to be able to do edits on the go, pick up where I finished on the PC and when I get back home for the catalog to be synchronized so any edit I did on the MacBook to be visible back on the PC so I can just smoothly work on images regardless of which machine I use.
    How to accomplish that ?

exFAT is probably your best bet because it doesn't have file size limitations that FAT32 does and is readable and writable by both Windows and the Mac OS. I have no idea what your TV wants; best to check the owners manual.
Those formats won't damage the files but I have seen quite a few comments that the exFAT formatting should be done on a Windows computer even though Disk Utility offers that option.

  • Lightroom 4.4: Only 3 thumbnails will display at a time in both Grid view and the Film Strip

Hi. I have Lightroom 4.4. and Windows 7--both of which have been working fine for several months. Starting a few days ago, however, thumbnails have refused to load for any NEW photos I import. They appear gray/blank in both Grid view and the film strip. However, if you click on any of the film strip thumbnails (while in either Grid view or Develop mode), that thumbnail and corresponding image WILL load--until up to three have done so. Then they begin disappearing again, allowing you to view no more than three images' thumbnails at any one time.
I can't review a shoot via Grid mode this way. I'm also afraid to use Lightroom while it's misbehaving, for fear of corrupting the catalog somehow (though all the images appear to be there). Searching this forum, I found several people who experienced having all of their thumbnails blank out and who were able to correct this by either reinstalling or removing their color profiling software. However, 1) I did this (and it didn't work), and 2) it isn't that all my thumbnails that have disappeared. All the thumbnails and images imported prior to the bug, still initially display correctly.* And I can get three thumbnails of the newer images to appear at a time.
*The asterisk is because after I poked around some more, I realized that if I opened other folders and began post-processing images from older uploads (vs. just viewing them), the thumbnails that initially displayed correctly everywhere also blank out and begin appearing in this up-to-three-at-a-time fashion.
    Help, please?
    With many thanks,
    Rita

Alas, it didn't work. I did it twice--the second time rebooting the computer before starting Lightroom. I didn't expect the reboot to make a difference, but I did discover something else in the process: the second time I tried this, I accidentally opened a different catalog--and new photos imported just FINE into that one, thumbnails and all! For one moment I thought the reboot HAD made the difference. However, when I reopened the catalog I actually wanted, the original problem remained. Thumbnails don't load with import, and, when forced, only display up to three at a time.
So the problem seems specific to this catalog.
And yes--thank you for affirming that reinstalling Lightroom wouldn't work, either. (I forgot to mention that's what I had tried first. It didn't help--but it's nice to know it wasn't supposed to.)
Thank you so much for your reply. Do you have any other ideas, please?
    With many thanks, truly,
    Rita

  • Catalog sharing between Lightroom and Photoshop Elements

Can the catalog be shared between Lightroom 2 and Photoshop Elements 10?

Lightroom and PSE cannot share catalogs (although the same image can be in both)
PSE catalogs can be upgraded to Lightroom catalogs, but then changes made in Lightroom are not reflected in PSE. You cannot go the other way, Lightroom catalogs cannot be converted to PSE catalogs.
Lastly, I strongly recommend that you use only a single "organizing" application. The idea of using two (or more) different "organizing" applications will lead to confusion and errors and lack of synchronization.

  • Lightroom 2 upgrade on OSX both versions 1 and 2 exist

I've looked but fail to find the answer at least how I expectto find it.
I've install Lightroom 2 and upgraded from version 1.4. The main catalog was covered and my presets etc were retained by version 2 but I now have both versions running.
Now Am I to uninstall version 1 and version 2 will keep my web addons and presets etc.
    Steve

You can remove the old version and your addons, etc will remain available for use by Lr2

  • How does metadata get changed by both Lightroom and another application??

I am frequently getting the message "The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?" on images in my catalog. I use only Lightroom to organize, add keywords, do basic adjustments, etc. On the occasions I am taking an image into Photoshop to do further work, it's exported as a TIFF or PSD and the original stays in the LR catalog untouched by anything else I might do to the image.
I have two choices with this message: Use Lightroom's settings, OR overwrite them from disc. The first few times this scared me, as I had no idea where those changes were coming from and why the disc file had something different than the lightroom catalog. I have all my metadata saved in XMP files. But I took the chance and said overwrite LR settings, and saw nothing change on the sliders or image being displayed. I then tried a few saying 'keep LR settings', and again I saw no visible signs of changes. That leads me to believe that they are NOT changed but LR things they are somehow. But I don't like seeing it, I want it to go away unless there really are changes happening outside of LR (like if I went into Bridge or something...)
Any ideas why this message shows up? I just discovered about 100 images in a collection of images I sent to stock agency three years ago, and haven't done anything with them outside of LR since.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Users have complained for years about spurious metadata-has-changed notifications.  If you're confident that you're not editing the file itself outside of LR, then choosing Overwrite Settings will rewrite the metadata in the file with the catalog metadata and (usually) make the spurious notification go away.
Unfortunately, LR doesn't tell you which metadata fields have changed, so users are left flying blind.  I believe Rob Cole had a plugin that would tell you metadata differences between the catalog and the disk file, but his Web site has been down for a couple of weeks now.
ManiacJoe: My guess is that Photoshop is updating some EXIF data fields in the raw file, for example the "edited with software" field. Since Lightroom probably has already set that field, it gives you a warning that something changed.
Interesting hypothesis.  I just tested that with LR 5.7.1, Photoshop CC 2014, OS X 10.10 and couldn't reproduce the problem.  I exported a TIFF from a cataloged raw file into the same folder as the raw, edited the TIFF and changed some of its metadata in Photoshop, and saved it.  LR didn't report a metadata-has-changed notification.
In general, I'd be (only moderately) surprised that if you edited x.tif in PS, it would change any metadata in x.cr2 or x.xmp.
