?Catalog in Photoshop Elements

I am having trouble understanding how the catalog works in Photoshop Elements 9.  Specifically where is it located and how does it back it up? I tried to back up my catalog to a cd and it told me I needed 108 cds to do this.  This doesn't seem to make sense to me since I understood that the catalog is just a database of the locations of the photos, why would it be so large?  Also I had previously backed it up to my hard drive and it didn't seem to take that much room.  Finally why is the main (original) catalog stored in a hidden folder at the root level on the hard drive?  Maybe not that many people use the catalog or have so many photos in it but conversely because I have cataloged so many pictures, it is critical for me to understand how it works.  Any and all comments gratefully appreciated.  Eilish

The help files explain catalogs in detail.  This page will get you started:

Quoting from one of the help files (emphasis added):
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The Backup Catalog command copies catalogs, media files (original and edited versions), PDFs, and projects onto a CD, DVD, or local network hard drive. You can have a backup of your catalog and media files on your hard drive (if your computer has space).
The default catalog is accessible for all users, and is therefore stored under the \ProgramData directory which is accessible to all users' programs and a Windows system directory -- hidden so users won't screw it up.

  • How can I fix a corrupt catalog in photoshop elements 8?

I am getting a catalog corrupt error in photoshop elements 8. Is it really corrupt or is my version too old now or something? I have years worth of photos in this catalog. The photos are on my hard drive, but is there any way to repair or reconstruct the catalog? Are the tags and albums saved somewhere?

    Hi,
The details about the tags and albums are all stored within the catalog so you could try to repair it.
If you can't load the organizer, try holding down the shift key while you start the organizer and it should open the Catalog Manager and jump to step 3 below.
    Load the organizer
From the File menu, select Catalog - that should open the Catalog Manager.
Select you current catalog and click on the Repair button
When that has finished, click on the Optimize button
When that is done, click on the Cancel button to close the Catalog Manager.
    Good luck

  • How do you convert a Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Photoshop Elements 13.0 catalog?

I have a lot of photographs with metadata and tags in Photoshop Album version 2.0 and I want to pull thee images, metadata, and tags into Photoshop Elements version 13.0 on a Windows 7 computer. Searching the web I found that this has to be done with the convert feature.  I tried File, Manage Catalogs, Convert and point to the folder holding my Photo Project Catalog.psa file, but nothing happens. It does not apparently see the .psa file.  How do I get my .psa catalog migrated into Elements 13?

  • Need help loading pics from multiple catalogs on Photoshop Elements 3

In the past, I've synched my photos from Photoshop Elements 3 to my video Ipod without a problem, but I only had one catalog in Elements. I created a new catalog and wanted to upload some of the pictures in the NEW catalog to my ipod. The trouble is, when I go into the photo preferences in my Ipod, it only shows the albums in the catalog I'm in. I want to load some pics from both catalogs. If I switch to the second catalog it erases everything it loaded previously from the first catalog. Does anyone know a way to upload from multiple catalogs on my Ipod? Is it possible to do?
    Thanks!

  • Move Catalog in photoshop elements 10  Does it move everything including your photos?

I would like to move all my photos in my catalog off my PC onto a portable hard drive. Does move catalog do this.  I can't seem to find anything on this subject.  Does this also move the catalog its self.  Like doing a back up but not.

    velera a écrit:
So what exactly does the choice of "Move Catalog" do?
What I explained : the catalog (which is a folder) is moved where you want. Moving a catalog does not change its contents, especially the location of the referenced picture files.
Moving a catalog from the default location to an external USB drive storing all your media files is a comon task. That way, you can share your catalog and library between several computers having the same Elements version. Moving back from the external drive to the internal one after a full backup and restore to external drive is also useful so that all your catalogs (if you have several ones) are shown in the same location in the catalog manager, instead having to browse to the 'custom' location.

  • Cannot backup the catalog in Photoshop Elements 12

    Hi
I installed PSE 12 and imported my Pictures catalog. I went to backup the catalog and it won't backup. I follwed the directions and rebuilt the thumbnail cache then  repair and re-index...
    Here is the error message:
    I'm running Win 8.1
    12 gb ram
Catalog is on my external 2T drive with over 1T available.
I have 33,000 pic + in 500 g on that 2T hard drive. There is still plenty of room.
My PSE12 was purchased by me and is licensed.

  • Restoring catalogs  to a new computer & version of Photoshop Elements

I have Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 installed on my computer. The computer's operating system is 64 bit Windows 7.
I have an unresolved problem with printing new JPEG images in Photoshop Elements 8. If I don't adjust the date in the image file before I print Photoshop Element crashs. I have no issues with Premiere Elements. I have no problem printing JPEG images which are opened from a RAW edit. No time adjustment is necessary in that case.
This is not a question about the printing issue on which I've given up finding a fix. However, thanks to all who offered some ideas, though.
I've tried everything, including seeking help on the Adobe forum, but without success. I've decided on a drastic measure. I'm going to delete Photoshop Elements 8 from my computer, but not Premiere Elements 8 and delete all the photo images from the computer too. I've everything backed up. I hope that should leave me with a computer that has no trace of Photoshop Elements 8 or my photos. Then I'm going to install Elements 10 and restore my catalogs from my backup. Hopefully that will leave the printing problem behind.
    Here is my question.
When I restore my catalogs to Photoshop Elements 10 will that procedure restore not only my images but also my albums & tags etc that I had created in version 8?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Ken,
Thank you very much for the reply. I'm relieved that the albums & tags are part of what I backed up so they'll be restored to Photoshop Elements 10.
I've looked at the Adobe document to which you gave me the link. Thanks for that too.
I have one final question that follows from the Adobe document that strictly relates to Premiere Elements 8 and not Photoshop Elements but I'll ask it in this forum  anyway. If no one is sure I'll pose it in the Premiere Elements forum.
As part of the uninstalling of Photoshop Elements 8.0 the Adobe document refers to removing two folders. One is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8.0. The other is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements Organiser 8.0. If I remove the folder C:\Program files\Adobe\Elements Organiser 8.0 does that have any effect on Premiere Elements. I use Premiere Elements but I never use the Organiser with it?

  • Photoshop Elements 13 Restoring Catalog / Files Not Able To Be Restored

I backed up my catalog from an older Photoshop version using the backup to hard drive option.  Then I restored my catalog to Photoshop Elements 13 on a new computer, but had files not able to be restored.  Does this means they are in my catalog but missing links to the actual files or not in the catalog at all? & is there something I can do differently to try the restore again without this happening?  Thanks!

    Thanks Michel,
When I made the copy of the catalog there was a file that could not be found and copied across, when I looked for it in the original catalog I found it was called b2eeza-18684.xml . So I thought I would try and convert the copy without removing the breeze data folder because this file (which may be corrupt) does not exist in the copy of the catalog. It worked.
One note, in order for the copy of the catalog to work with Find More Catalogs the original catalog needed to be removed from the default location that I had it in. Elements seemed to detect that it and the copy were the same catalog and would not add the copy to the list of catalogs that could be converted. Once I had moved the original catalog to another folder I was able to add the copy.

  • Possible to import Photoshop Elements 8 Catalog into Lightroom?

Is it possibel to import a catalog from Photoshop Elements 8 into the latest version of Lightroom?  I've kind of outgrown some of Element's functionality and I'd like to take Lightroom for a spin.  However, it would be useless if it won't import my complex set of albums, tags, etc.

Lightroom 2 cannot convert PSE8 catalogs. (Maybe Lightroom 3 will do so, but no one really knows...)
You can do a partial import. Using psedbtool, write your metadata to the photo files, then import the individual photos into Lightroom 2. You will lose collection membership, stacks, version sets, creations and a few other things.

  • Loading .gif animations into Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac

For years I used Photoshop Elements 2 for Windows to make .gif animations with great success.
Then I switched to a Mac and bought Elements 8 for Mac.  Now, I am finding out that I can not load any
of the animations I made using Elements 2 into 8.  (And yet I can load animations I made using 8 into 2.)
In fact, I can not load any .gif animations into 8, other than if I make one and save it
as .psd.  8 allows me to make them, but not load them as .gifs.
My question:  Is there an easy way to load .gif animations into PS Elements 8 so a
person can work on the individual frames?  Am I going to have to convert any .gif animation I
want to import into 8 first into .psd?  All I seem to get when I try to load a .gif is the message
"This is an animated gif.   You can only view one frame." I have searched manuals and the

Is it possible?  Thanks. (I also have noticed that Elements 8 will not allow me to change the frame

    Dear Ms. Brundage -
I followed the directions detailed in your blog entitled "Moving a Catalog from Windows to Mac" as well as your description of the process on page 58 of your book "Photoshop Elements 9 - the missing manual."
I installed PE9 for Windows and converted my catalog.  I then backed up that catalog to an external hard drive.  I then connected the hard drive to my MAC on which I also installed Photoshop Elements 9 for MAC.  I opened the Organizer and tried to restore that converted catalog.  However, for each file in the converted catalog, a dialog box opened that said "Could not restore file:  /Volumes/Name of External Hard Drive/Filename.JPG."
I then made a second backup of the converted catalog using Photoshop Elements 9 for Windows and then tried to restore that catalog again on the MAC using Photoshop Elements 9 for MAC, again to no avail.
Do you have any idea what the problem may be?
    Thanks again.
