Catalog Location - Laptop or External Drive

I recently purchased Lightroom and have a MacBook Pro with 2 External 500 GB drives. My question is whether or not I should locate the catalog (database) on the laptop or the External drive. Can I have it on the laptop and then sych to the external drive for when I am on a shoot? If I do that and the images are initially on the Laptop how do I relocated them to the external drive and have the catalog be up to date? Or should I have the catalog only on the laptop with images actually stored on the external drives?
I guess I would like to know what strategies you are employing?
Thanks in advance.
David

I would say USB2 is the problem. If you had a decent interface (Firewire or eSATA) performance would be reasonable. But USB 2.0 absolutely sucks for data transfer. They say 480 Mb/sec but that's a bald-faced lie. If you can sustain 20 MB/sec off a USB 2.0 drive you're doing well, where Firewire 400 (rated at 400 Mb/sec) very typically sustains more than 35 MB/sec and Firewire 800 can go as fast as the drive can -- typical external 3.5" drives do about 45 MB/sec.
Problem is, in their penny pinching ways, PC vendors refuse to spend the extra $1 and thus won't put on a Firewire port. Same rationale that gets you VGA out (thereby crippling your ability to use an external monitor and have sharp text) instead of including a DVI connector.

Had pse 8 on a Windows 7 PC with a catalog backup on an external drive. Now have a Mac with OS Mavericks. If install pse 12 or Lightroom on the Mac will I be able to use the old catalog backup or must I start from scratch.

If you made a full catalog backup using the organizer's backup command, and you did it to a removable drive, yes, you can restore it to the mac. A backup made on discs will not work, though.

  • Best Way To Work on the road - Laptop w/External Drive

Hello. I would like to get some advice/experience on the best workflow to use in the following situation. I currently have this as my office/home setup. A laptop and and external drive. I run LR from the laptop HD, the catalog is on the laptop HD but ALL my images/xmp files reside on the external drive.
So, when traveling I use my laptop and another external drive -- call it the Portable Drive. After a day of shooting, I import my images into LR and the destination is the Portable Drive. I use the same import folder naming standards as I do when in the office/home.
When I am back in the office/home I would then like to move the images/xmp files and all metadata/library/develop module work from the portable drive to the external drive in the office.
I hope this makes sense. Any thoughts? Ideas? Should I create a new catalog and then export that catalog and import it into the "home" catalog?

I am new to LR2, but have stumbled on a solution that works for me. This solution requires that you have the laptop and home computer on the same network and you have write access from the laptop to some directory on the home computer. From the laptop, open LR and point to the folder on the laptop containing the photos you want to copy to the home computer. I then right-click on the folder and select Export this Folder as a Catalog. With the export dialog choose a location on the home computer where you want the catalog to reside and enter a name. Once the files are copied, you need to open LR on the home computer and use the Import button on the bottom of the Library panel to point to the newly created catalog (*.lrcat) file. You then have the option of adding the photos without moving them or copying them to a new location and importing from there. LR2 also checks for duplicate file names before importing. Hope this works for you. Cheers... Brian

  • Moving a catalog from hardrive to external drive

I am trying to move a catalog from my hardrive to an external drive.  I have followed the steps i found online, but my pictures aren't there.  They are still on hardrive and the catalog folder on the external is empty.  Please help.  I am sure there is something silly I am missing.

As Steve has already pointed out, the "catalog" and your photos are two different things. The "catalog" is the LR data base where LR references your photos.
So for LR to work properly you always need two things: (a) your photos and (b) the catalog.
The catalog is the file ending with <  .lrcat>. See here where you can find the catalog in various OS: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84313.html
These are the default locations; you can put your catalog in a different location, and you can have it also on an external hard drive, provided that it is one with a fast connection. The USB connection is too slow, it is therefore not recommended to put the catalog on an USB drive.
The catalog and the photos do NOT have to be in the same location. So you can move your photos to an external hard drive and leave your catalog on an internal drive.
If you move your photos via your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer) you will have to re-connect LR with the new location of the photos.

  • Itunes not locating library on external drive

    arrrggggh...
i have faced this before but forgot how to resolve it. i rarely use itune except to import more music and update ipod/appleTV. my library is all ripped cd's on an external drive. the correct drive and file is shown under edit>preferences>advances for the iTune Media Folder Location.
today i fired up the system and imported 'take 5 / dave brubeck'. it successfully was ripped to the external drive and appleTV sync'd.
however all of my other songs (>10k) show up in the playlist with the dreaded '!'. when i click on them iTunes says they cannot be located and would i like to search? searching attaches that song, but i do not want to do this 10k times.
how can i get iTunes to find all songs in the library?
    tia

edit to add.. the library (.itl) file is located on the C drive correctly, it is just not associating with the actual MPEG files on the I drive...

  • HOTSYNC WITH PALM DESKTOP LOCATED ON AN EXTERNAL DRIVE

I've been hotsynching between my desktop, laptop and Z22.  Recently I replaced the desktop harddrive with a much larger one.  I put the old harddrive in a USB external drive housing and now have a nifty 40 GB external drive.  Does anyone know how I can hotsync the Z22 one last time with the Palm Desktop info on the external drive?  Then I'll install Palm Desktop on the new harddrive in my desktop, and hotsync from the Z22 to the new harddrive.
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

Is all your current data on the Z22? If it is, install Palm desktop on the new hard drive and sync the Z22 with desktop overwrites handheld selected in hotsync manager.
Another option is to install the version of Palm Desktop that you were using on the old hard drive, copy the username folder on the old hard drive in the Palm folder, Paste the username folder into the Palm folder on the new hard drive. Open Palm desktop and the data should be there.

  • SHARING A LR4 CATALOG/PREVIEW VIA AN EXTERNAL DRIVE - A FAST ONE

Does anyone have experience sharing a LR4 catalog via an external drive. My stuff all come in at different times so we would not be accessing it simulteaneously. Trying to keep the maintenance time down as I spend a lot of time working on my catalog then having to syncronize and import the catalogs on the other MACs to reflect my changes to my local catalog. My thinking is to use an external drive and when the other team member comes in to use the external to work off of. We pass it back and forth.

  • Itunes: Can I use multiple folder locations if my primary location is an external drive?

I recently moved all my music to an external drive. Now I want to have some music back in my Itunes folder so that I can listen to my music when I'm not near my external drive. Is there a simple solution?

iTunes will only point to ONE location for a library folder per User account. You'd need to create a new user account that uses the local HD folder and log in with that account to eb able to "switch" library locations, but that's a hassle too.
Unfortunately, creating two library files and swapping them out usually results in a "broken library file" error and you can't play anything without re-importing everything.

  • Possible to use DVD-RW drive from Asus laptop as external drive for S10?

I just purchased a Lenovo S10 netbook, which of course does not have a built in DVDRW.  I have an older Asus laptop with a removeable DVD-RW drive.  Is it possible to get some sort of case to turn it into a USB external drive?

the links that BaileyMoto posted will work for most laptop dvd/cd drives.  i've got one, and it works great with an nec drive in it.  only takes one cable for power and data, so you don't use up both ports on your computer.
only the newer laptop cd/dvd drives are sata.  your old drive from your asus should work fine in that enclosure.  the first link is for the board that comes in the enclosure that's in the second link.

  • IPhoto keeps "dropping" my library that's located on an external drive

iPhoto can't seem to hold on to my external Western Digital drive.
My iPhoto library is located on the drive (connected via USB). When I launch iPhoto, it loads up all my photos from the library, and they look fine. But if I try to print a photo and/or start moving around within the library in iPhoto to view other images, every thumbnail goes black and I get messages that iPhoto must quit, and that a device (the external drive) was removed improperly. This happened like five times in a row.
I've checked the power and USB cables, and I'm pretty sure they're not the problem.
When I unplug and replug the USB cable, the external drive remounts. When I launch iPhoto again, it prompts me to select my library. Then all the photos are back, at least until the next time I start printing photos or moving around in the library.
This problem only came up when I moved to the new Mac Mini and new iPhoto (I had other iPhoto problems on my old MacBook, which I also ran from a library on the external drive, but I didn't have this problem).
I need iPhoto to quit dropping the external drive -- any ideas? Thanks.

Most likely cause: A damaged USB port on either the Mac or the Disk, or a faulty cable. To check for this try a variety of each.
When the drive dismounts, is it gone from the Finder too? If so, it supports the Hardware theory.
Less Likely but also possible: what format is the External Drive? iPhoto requires a drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • Is there a way to export all of my music from my hard drive to an external drive, connected to my computer and have iTunes still work with the music library located on the external drive?

I do not have enough room on my hard drive for all of my music collection and want to export the music files to my external 300GB hard drive rather than purchase and configure a new, larger hard drive for my computer.  Can I export all of my music library to the external drive and configure iTunes to always store music there, and operate seemlessly with the music library on the external drive?

  • HELP!  mounting laptop as external drive

I just bought my Macbook Pro (used) and I want to mount it as an external drive from my old G4 running on OSX 10.3.9
I have a firewire cable to link them but I don't know how to launch either one on the other desktop.
    HELP!!

    yeah, not working.
It is a desktop G4, not powerbook. Does this matter? Is there some way to refresh the desktop or something to get it to appear? I have the firewire logo bouncing around on the desktop monitor but no indication that it has mounted on the MBP.
I tried it the other way as well - same issue.

  • Project location -- internal or external drive for preference?

I usually like to keep my projects on my internal hard drive, which is an ATA Maxtor, and my media on an external drive. Many people keep their projects on the external drive with the media. Does this increase speed?
(of course I back up on to several different sites)
    Thanks

The project file only contains pointers to the media and is a relatively small document.
If you keep it on a separate drive, the benefit is not speed, but the fact that you can use it to recapture the media, should your media drive cease to work.

  • How to restore my backup in laptop from external drive

How to restore my backup in my macbookpro from external drive

    Hello Jayrajjpatel,
It sounds like you have a Time Machine backup on an external drive that you would like to use to restore your computer. The following article will help you get that done, named:
OS X Mavericks: Recover your entire system
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14185
If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, repair or replace the disk before following these instructions.
Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected and turned on. If your disk is on a network, make sure your Mac is on the same network.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
Select “Restore from a Time Machine Backup,” then click Continue.
    Do one of the following:
External backup disk: Select it, then click Continue.
Time Capsule: Choose your network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
Network backup disk: Select it, then click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, then click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine resumes incremental backups after the full backup is completed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling
