Catalog merging - 1 drive to 2, old to new computer?

Another catalog issue... one I cannot find discussion of. I have been using Lightroom since the beginning on an older PC running Windows XP (currently ver 3.5). The way I began using LR was to only import those images which I wanted to work with. Basically these were all in the same parent directory (/images) and reasonably well organized. Having just set up a new Windows 7 PC with plenty of memory and speed, I would like to import all of my digital photos (100K+) to LR. I would also like to have my old catalog, containing metadata on ~2,600 images that I have worked with.
I would like to have the catalog on my boot drive; all images are on another, larger drive. So far, I have not been able to make this work. Most attempts result in the catalog being on the boot drive and unable to find the images. No parent folder shows up in the C: folder (cataloged), so I can't point the whole batch of cataloged images to the right drive. It seems the only alternative I have is doing this folder by folder.
Any suggestions greatly welcomed!

If I were in your situation, I would start out freash from the start.
But first: It is generally not recommended that you put the LR catalog on the boot drive - assuming that's where LR resides. To speed LR up it's best to have the catalog on a different but very fast drive.
It could even be an external hard drive provided it's an eSata drive.
To get all your images into LR I'd suggest as follows:
You have to keep your existing LR catalog or you'd loose the work that you did in the past. And you have to get all the other images into this catalog.
First I would separate the images already imported into LR and all the other images. Open LR with your existing catalog and organize the already imported images in LR. In LR move them to one new parent folder descriptively named. If you have moved or re-named these images outsie of LR, you have to point LR to the new location.
You will be able to see the parent folder with the descriptive name in your OS (Finder / Win Explorer) so you know these are the ones already in LR and in its catalog.
Then I would organize all my other images (the ones not yet not imported into LR) where I want them and in the folders as I want them. I'd do this in my OS and organize them all in one parent folder (with sub-folders). So after this you'd have two parent folders on your hard drive, one "Images already in LR" and one "Images to be imported into LR".
Then I'd open LR and would import all of these images from the parent folder "Images to be imported into LR" in one fell swoop. That way LR would build a catalog representing the "new" situation on your hard drive and you don't have to do any finding of "missing" images and or folders.
Finally you might want to re-organize the images that were already in LR previously. But do it in LR so that LR can keep track of the changes you made.

I imported files from an external hard drive to Itunes on a new computer.  they imported & play fine, but the ratings & playlists are gone & i am unable to update any info.  I found a file name playlist on old drive & imported now most files are missing!  Help!

Can you locate the iTunes Library.itl file on the old drive? Ideally you would have simply copied over the entire iTunes folder structure from <User's Music> on the old computer into <User's Music> on the new one to transfer the library will all playlists, ratings, play counts etc. intact.

  • New Computer - How do I move my library from Old to New Computer?

    Hi,
I bought a new computer and want to transfer all my music from the old one to the new one.
This is what I did so far:
Copied the entire iTunes directory from my old computer into an external hard drive.
Then loaded the entire iTunes folder from the hard Drive to the existing iTunes directory in the new Laptop.
Now, none of the songs showed up in my iTunes Library screen.
So I had to basically drag them from windows explorer into the iTunes Library screen. However, none of the album artwork, or ratings, etc, are there (i copied all those files from old to new computer as they were in the original directories in my old computer, I think)... It looks like i'll have to do all that work again!
Is there a way to do this one shot??
    Thanks!
    RJ.

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to the folder you copied.

  • Transferring IPhoto from old to new computer

    Hello:
I am having problems transferring my IPhoto album from my old computer to my new computer
    Old computer
    • MacbookPro 2.6Ghz Intel Core Duo
    • OSX v 10.7.5
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
    New Computer
    • MacBookPro 2.6GHz Intel Core i7
    • OSX v 10.8.2
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
Both computers Pictures albums and IPhoto Libraries permissions are are set to "read and write" for administrator and everyone. File sharing is on in System Preferences.
When I try to copy from the old to the new computer, I get message "Items can’t be copied to “Pictures” because you don’t have permission to read them". I have done the IPhoto "repair permission" on both computers and still cannot copy my IPhoto album from my old to new computer. What now? This is very frustrating :-(

Where on the new computer are you trying to copy to?  Try changing the destination to the Desktop.
Another approach would be to connect the two Macs together with the old MBP in Firewire Target Disk Mode. Then see if you can copy the library without the permissions error.

  • From old to new computer : synch problems

    Hello,
I have a problem with my ipod/itunes. Here is my story.
I have bought an Ipod Touch 3 (32 GB) two months ago. I have installed itunes on my computer (running XP) and used it to synchronize my ipod (though I use manual sync for music & video).
My computer is now dead (motherboard and disk, how lucky I am), I have setup a new one (running Seven) and installed itunes. The problem is now : how can I tell my ipod touch that this new computer is "its" computer ? When I click on "synchronize the apps" (as it was on my previous one), itunes warns me that it will erase my applications and application data with the library content. I have some important data in my touch (and applications downloaded from AppStore on it) and I don't want to loose something.
So, what can I do to proceed to a clean migration between my old and new computer ? If I start from a empty library, will my ipod be emptied ?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
    MD

Soooo...the dirty hack has not worked (itunes is said as "damaged").
I have tried something else and guess what : it worked. I tell here what I did, but I don't guarantee it will work for other users (so if you try it, it is at your own risk !).
    1) Full desinstall of itunes (including system directories related to it and librairy)
    2) Normal installation and first run. The new library is created
    3) Edit itunesmusiclibrary.xml and replace the unique library identifier by the one of the backuped itunesmusiclibrary.xml (don't forget to note the replaced identifier before replacing it)
    4) Edit itunesmusiclibrary.itl with an hexadecimal editor (I used ultraedit), search the old identifier and replace it with the new one.
    5) Launch itunes normally
    6) Plug the ipod touch : itunes should say that there is data on the ipod that is not in the library and ask if you want to put them (otherwise they will be removed). Choose yes
    7) Take a cup of coffee/tea/chocolate/whatever you want : the ipod will be backuped and the applications will be in the library.
Now, the ipod touch is synchronized again with itunes for applications. Movies and music are not, but it is normal.
I have not tested agenda/contacts, as I don't use them.

  • How Move PSE Catalog/Photos From Old to New Computer?

I have Photoshop Album 2.0 on my existing Windows computer, with 2200 photos, many of which are tagged and/or edited. I recently bought PSE 4.0 and installed it on my new Windows computer.
Please give advice re: 1)how to move or copy my photo and PSA catalog files, and any other files I need, to my new computer; and 2) import them as necessary into PSE 4.

Preliminary comment is a specific - don't do an import (get photos) over on your new computer. That will not bring in the tags or the edited to original correspondence from your PS Album catalog.
    There are basically two methods
1- if your Windows drive letter for the photos files, your folder structure and your Windows User name on the new system will be the same - copy your files from the old to the new computer with same folder locations. An external hard drive is a good intermediate device if you have one available.
1b- is a variation where you do not have exactly the same folder paths on the new machine but you use the MS Access product to edit the Elements catalog database.
2- if your drive letters, folder structure or user name are different on the new machine - or if you are uncertain of the location of your photo files, do an PS Album Full Backup on the old machine and an Elements Restore on the new machine. Do a File > Catalog > Recover before starting the backup. Also, it is very important that you Reconnect All Missing Files successfully because any files not connected will not be backed up. You can direct the Elements backup to an external hard drive folder or a disc(s).
Be aware that not all Creations transfer as is from PS Album 2; tags and photos are fine. Here are some relevant Adobe techdocs to read
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330659.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330800.html
Whether PSE 4 automatically opens your catalog or whether you must do the File > Catalog > Open might vary. In any case, I have always seen a popoup asking you to confirm that you want it converted to the current version.
Of course keep everything as is on your old computer until you have verfied the success on the new computer.

  • How do I get my Firefox bookmarks off of my old hard drive (now installed on my new computer as the 2nd hard drive) and into my new installation of Firefox on my new computer?

I had a lovely computer, about 8 years old, running Windows XP; the mother board died; the hard drive was fine.
I now have a new computer, running Windows 7, and I have the old hard drive as my 2nd hard drive.
How do I get my old Firefox bookmarks off the old hard drive and into my new Firefox installation?

You can find your current profile using about:support pasted into the location bar then click on "Open Containing folder. That is where you will want to replace your old files into.
Next find your old profile on your old HD, see
    :https://support.mozilla.com/questions/886839
With Firefox down replace the profile files you decide to replace.

  • How do I maintain the configuration of my current Catalog in PSE9 when moving it to a new computer?

While the Version Sets in my current catalog are collapsed, the version sets in the Catalog on the new computer have all become 'expanded'; this is unacceptable to me, as many of the pairs that are stacked as Version Sets have become separated.  While all of the Version Sets are "tagged", it looks as though many of the photos in the expanded sets are without tags.  Problem #2 is that the hierarchy of Keyword Tags that I currently use is lost when the Catalog is restored in the new computer's Organizer.  I currently use about 500 Keyword Tags, divided into 6 categories (i.e. People, Places, Locations, Events, Other, Bird Species).  On the new computer, the tags are alphabetized without being separated into their 6 categories.  I currently have close to 30,000 items in my Catalog, and have spent hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours editing (and saving both the original and  edited files as  Version Sets), tagging and captioning all of my photos.  I followed the instructions previously published in "Photoshop Elements Help" regarding backup to an external hard drive and restoring the files in an empty Organizer on the new computer.  I also used the "Save Keyword Tags To File" command before the backup.  Any suggestions to remedy my two major problems would be appreciated.  I do have the intact "current" Catalog on my old computer, complete with tags and captions, collapsed version sets, and a list of Keyword Tags organized in the Hierarchy that has worked best for me.

    Hi,
The version set information and the tag hierarchy are stored within the catalog. It sounds as though you haven't brought over the catalog from your old computer.
The recommended way to transfer elements from one computer to a new one is to use the Backup catalog to CD, DVD or Hard Drive on your old system and then use Restore catalog from CD, DVD or Hard Drive on your new system. Is this how you did it?
That should have preserved your version sets.

  • My last computer died, but we've been able to transfer my files onto an external hard drive to put onto my new computer.I have now got exclamation marks next to 100 songs which I downloaded from Frostwire years ago. How can I fix this?

After my brother transferred all my files from my old computer to an external hard drive, he then put them onto my new computer. It appears that 100 songs which I downloaded from Frostwire years ago have the exclamation mark next to them. I cannot find the files on my new computer, and cannot remember where they were saved to on my old computer as it was over 3 years ago. I have also tried to consolidate the files as I've found people suggested, but that is not working. I have also read that you should tell itunes that you are moving the music, but my old laptop cannot be read when it is on. Is there any other way tofix this issue? I don't want to have to buy over 100 songs which I already have.

  • Can't find previous itunes file after moving info to an external drive to move library to new computer!!!  HELP

I have moved my itunes files numerous times to new computers as I get one.  This last time I had everything running off an external drive, to conserve hard drive space on computer and hopefully from computer failure.  I need to move library over to new computer and get away from old computer that has Windows XP to the computer with windows 7.  After installing itunes on new computer and plugging in external to new computer, it finds all music and movies, etc., however, I can't seem to find the file that has the playlist info, play count, and to see where the backups of my iphone(s) are.  I have been working at this for days to no avail.  It may be right in front of my face but can't see where to find it.  HELP!!!!

  • How do I transfer songs from an itunes program saved on a thumb drive to itunes on a new computer

I am scrapping my old desktop computer for a new laptop.  I copied the entire itunes file on to a thumb drive before getting rid of the old computer.  There are almost 200 songs contained in itunes file that I copied.  I want to transfer the songs in itunes file on the tumb driver to itunes on my new laptop - how can that be done?  I know it's probably very simple but I am ignorant and stuck.  Please help.

If the actual iTunes folder from the <user>/Music folder was copied to the flash drive, simply copy that to the new computer.
If the folder copied was the Program Files\iTunes folder, there is no media there.

  • What is the best method for moving iTune Libraries from Old to New Computer

    Hello,
Thanks in advance for any assistance you may offer.
My Sony Vaio Desktop recently died and untimely death, so I just purchased an HP Notebook. I was trying to wait out the release of the possible update of the Macbook line. However the old computer didn't agree. This HP will tie me over till a new release.
I've been doing weekly backups for over 3 years with a backup drive from Western Digital. At this point I just want to transfer my music in iTunes and applications from the App store that are loaded on to my iPod Touch into the new computer and then reauthorize and sync.
My question is what's the best method. Oh another problem I'm having includes the latest iPhone & iPod Touch software problem of 3rd party apps not working along with the vanishing of my music on the Touch.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Open up a fresh copy of iTunes. Point iTunes in the direction of your Western Digital Harddrive. Import Folders.
    1. New Copy
    2. Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Change -> <the address of the iTunes library on WD>
    3. File -> Add Folder to Library -> <Select iTunes folder on WD>
Always keep a backup of your iTunes Library file and the iTunes XML Document. If you have those, then it might be just as simple as copying those to your iTunes file folder. If you are not sure where they are, then do a search for iTunes.xml.
