Catalog questions before I make this move

For reasons that'd take quite a bit more time to explain than I (or I suspect anyone else) has, I'm getting rid of my iMac and moving to a Win7 Ultimate (64bit) i7 machine.
I am going to attempt, if possible, to move my LR2 catalog and files over to LR3 across platforms. I'm not sure exactly how to go about this, or if anyone even thinks it has a sliver of a chance of actually working. Here is the way things are laid out on the iMac:
LR2 catalog: /Users/Anthony/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat
Actual location of RAW photos: /Volumes/photodump/photos/originals/[year]/[location]/[style]/[yyyymmdd]/
I've got the raw photos moved from the external on which they used to live, to a partition on the hdd in my i7 machine. They're at E:\photos\originals\[year]\[location]\[style]\[yyyymmdd] now.
Is there any way I can install LR3 on this i7 machine and import my iMac's catalog to keep the changes I've applied to the several thousand images in that catalog? Right now, my plan is to export the full-res JPEGs I need for a shoot I need to deliver to a client and finish processing on the new machine - but I'd like to know if there is any way at all to salvage my changes. I'm not in a giant rush to rid myself of the iMac, so even if it's something that requires several hours, I'm willing to do it.
Thanks!

Your licence allows you to install LR3 on two computers at a time, and you're not limited by brand.
Just copy your Lightroom catalogue (an lrcat file) and its previews file (lrdata extension) over to the other computer, and copy the images folder too (keeping the same folder structure).
Now over on the Windows computer, double click the lrcat file and you'll see the folders show question marks. Click these, and choose to update the folder location to where they are on that computer.
Once that's safely done, you've verified everything's OK and you've got backups, you can inflict whatever physical damage you wish on your iMac.

  • Questions before I make the switch to a MBA

I've own'd a Macbook 2.4 Ghz with 2 gig memory now for about 8 months. I'm happy with the machine but always wanted the MBA for the portability. I travel everyday and would love a MBA but was not ready to jump in on the first rev.
I use my MB for webmail, photos, converting HD video and some light editing. My question is the new 1.8G/128SSB able to handle video processing as good or better than this Macbook? I would think the SSD would be better and the graphics chip is probably alot better then this x3100 model.
Looking for any advice you MBA owners have! Thanks.

I went from a 2.4/7200 MBP to this 1.86/SSD. I still have my Pro and I am in my 2 week "trial period" with the Air. The Air actually feels quite a bit faster than my Pro overall due to the SSD. I'm sure it's not as fast for encoding video, etc., but it is more than adequate for my needs.
This biggest difference I see is battery life and charging time. I definitely seem to get more life out of the Pro, and the recharge time is ridiculous at times (5-8hrs!!?). I'm hoping this clears up after some more calibration and cycling. I hear that the new Pros and Macbooks have the same issue though.
Overall, it's a beautiful machine that appeals to my minimalist nature. If the regular Macbooks had a screen this nice I might have gone that route because of the ability to upgrade, etc. I may actually still do that if this battery issue doesn't improve....

  • Few questions before I make a decision

I am tryin to decide on whether or not to get a touch. i have a couple questions which I have not found an answer on these forums for.
    1. Are there any speakers that are compatiable for the widescreen view on the touch i.e. the touch sits in the dock sideways so you can watch a video and hear it through speakers?
or does the touch have speakers built in?!? doubt it..but doesnt hurt to ask
    2. What apps are available to download and use on the touch, is it the same as the iPhone?
    thanks in advance

    1. There are no speakers available currently that offer a sideways dock to play the ipod touch with. And there is no speakers built into the touch please read the tech specs at the link below.
    http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html
    2. THere are no apps that can be downloaded from the internet. Any hacks will work and may void the warranty. THere are iphone web based apps that amy work for the ipod touch. There is a collection of such web based apps at the link below.

Keylight what? All I see is some effect similar to Leave Color, a.k.a the Pleasantville effect that made the rounds 10 years ago. It may require additional masking and otehr effects, but definitely not something that is specifically related to Keylight...

I'm trying to watch a movie from my iPad on my tv with Hdmi  cable.  Do I need to do anything to the tv to make this work?

Not really. Using the correct Digital Av adapter and connecting the iPad to the Tv through one of its HDMI ports is all it takes. Of course making sure the correct input is selected in the Video source selection on the TV.

You should be able to change your e-mail address from your provider ... then edit it to meet the Apple requirements.   Unfortunately you've given us no profile details so we can't tell what device you have.

Comes up with "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)."
The cheek of the matter is everytime I tried to get Apple support it comes up with a request for me to pay $54 for their support package, to fix a problem I didn't have until I complied to one of their update requests.
End of Rant!!! - Anyone know how to fix please?

Well, I wonder about all the responses...:)
Anyhow, I wound up "fixing" the problem by using the System Restore disks for the Mini. It's now running Tiger 10.4.11 (with all updates) and I copied my iTunes library over. It all works now. <shrug> I have no idea what the problem was, and I'm a bit leery of upgrading it to Leopard, so I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

  • I asked this question before but I can't find it now. Anyway, I'm trying to import a DVD video that was made on a MAC and use it on a new iMovie project.

I asked this question before but I can't find it now. Anyway, I'm trying to import a DVD video that was made on a MAC and use it on a new iMovie project.
How do I do the importing.

If the video is already on a DVD:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

When I open iMovie (09), the app searches for missing iPhoto files.  These are files I deleted.  I have to close about 30 dialog boxes before I can start using iMovie.  How do I make this stop?

So it seems the issue is when iMovie is wanting to creat thumbnails, if I ask it to ignore then it's fine but if not it hangs up searching for the video file.

    sure.
the ppt has to be some kind of 'video' iM supports.
so export it from with MS Office as a Quicktime movie, preffered with 'Animation' codec, or as appleintermediatecodec .. for quality reasons.
you need the Talking Head as a 2nd video.
then use iM's Pic-In-Pic feature to combine both videos as wanted.
I would suggest to do some editing (you full-screen, the ppt full-screen, perhaps 'close ups' of some charts, cut-aways to snoozing audience, etc) to 'pep' the video. for this purpose, it could be much esier to export each slide from within PPT as a jpeg and create the 'flow' in iM only... except, you need the ppt-animations ... but, who uses animations in a presentation anyhow ... ?

  • Is my iMac now useless as i have installed lion and i am no longer able to run cs2 photoshop and illustrator as this is all i use my mac for they should make this clear before buying it i can't afford the latest version of cs2

is my iMac now useless as i have installed lion and i am no longer able to run cs2 photoshop and illustrator as this is all i use my mac for they should make this clear before buying it i can't afford the latest version of cs2 and cant believe what a waste of money it is.

The newest version of CS2 is CS5. And it was made very clear that these applications would not run in Lion. Not only by Apple, but on all sorts of communities and websites. It has been a long time coming - PowerPC apps were outdated six years ago. Lion does not support Rosetta, and therefore not PPC apps.
you have to options. Go back to Snow Leopard or upgrade your software. (MS Office 2004 and older will not run either).
