Catalog refuses to backup? Elements 9

Every time I try to backup the catalog to my hard drive I get a message "Error encountered while writing files"  no further explanation. I do not have this problem with my other programs.  I have a Dell Dimension 4600, upgraded to Windows 7. 160gb hard drive, 2.5gb memory and 2.66GHz Intel CPU.

Thanks, but that didn't seem to do the trick. Time Machine seems to be getting stuck on .wav files. The problem is, I have countless wav files on my computer that are part of Logic, Ableton Live, sample libaries, viynl conversions, and so on and so forth. They must be backed up. I find the solution to exclude these files from the backup extremely pointless consdiering the fact that I need them. Any other suggestions? Anyone else have any tricks? I hope this is fixed eventually; I don't want to upgrade to Lion for various reasons nor do I want to upgrage for something this simple and something that should've been fixed and polished before the OS was released.

  • Will my catalog safely Upgrade from Elements 5 to Elements 8?

I have over 16,000 photos tagged in my Elements 5 catalog.  I am hesitant to upgrade to 8 for fear of not being able to reconnect to the catalog.  Any assurances or tips?  Chet

As long as there is nothing currently wrong with your catalog and nothing interferes with the conversion process, you should have a save catalog conversion.
Besides, when the conversion takes place, a copy of your catalog is created. So even if the conversion fails for some reason, you'll still have your original catalog working in PSE5.

However, if you recreated the database, then your database will now have a new DBID after it was recreated. You can see the current DBID of the database to see if it matches the one above.
If it is a standby database and it is logical standby, then it will also have a different DBID.

  • Time Machine suddenly refuses to backup to non case-sensitive drive

There is another thread on this which for some reason is marked as resolved, so I thought I'd post a new thread. Suddenly after months of no complaints I get the following error:
    *+Time Machine Error+*
+A volume you are backing up is case-sensitive, but the backup volume is not.+
+To Select a different backup volume, or to choose not to back up the case-sensitive volume, open the System Preferences and choose Time Machine.+
The only thing I've changed is that yesterday I ran Software Update. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what was updated, but I suspect Quicktime was one of them since I needed to reboot. So now I'm at 7.4.5 in Quicktime.
Time Machine refuses to backup my drives now complaining about the case sensitive filesystem. The thing is, *NONE of my drives are case sensitive.* Looking at the Change Drive window in Time Machine, I see that most of the drives on my system say "reforat required" if I am to use them with Time Machine. All drives on my system are *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*. The fact that some drives are not requiring a reformat and some are, even though they all are the same format is quite puzzling.
I took a spare drive and allowed Time Machine to reformat it for it's use. It has now reformatted the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Case-Sensitive).
Can anyone shed any light as to why TM would suddenly require my backup drive to be case sensitive when none of my drives are?
    This make no sense...
    -K

Ok - Running Disk Utility Verify on both the system disk and the TM disk seems to have magically stopped this error. Note that Disk Utility didn't actually find or fix any problems with either disk. The problem just went away....
    It doesn't make any sense.

  • Current catalog is a backup catalog, is this a problem??

Not sure how this happened but the catalog that I am currently downloading pictures to is a backup catalog.
I think that I opened a back up catalog and then the next time I opened lightroom it opened the backup and did
not realize I was in a backup catalog and continued to download pictures. By the way, I have lightroom 3.4.1.
I have transfered lightroom catalog and all pictures to external hard drive with backup to a second hard drive and
everything is there, but my catalog location is users/butler/pictures/lightroom/backup/2011-05-21 1935.
If I open my main lightroom catalog it is missing tons of pictures but the backup file has everything.
Is this a problem and if so how do I fix it?? PLEASE HELP, frustrated and confused!!
    Thanks, debbutler

Yes, you have a potential problem when your working catalog is also the backup catalog. The problem is that now you don't have a backup.
You have to make sure that the locations for the working catalog and the backup catalog are NOT identical.
The location of your working catalog is displayed in > Edit >Catalog Settings >General Tab.
The location of your backup catalog is displayed in the backup dialog that comes up when you close LR ; to make sure that the backup dialog appears select <Every Time LR Exits> in >Catalog Settings >General Tab.
I've had this problem and solved it as follows:
In your backup catalog select the location where your working catalog should be and make the backup. After this you have 2 identical catalogs in 2 different locations. In your OS (with LR still closed) navigate to the just created working catalog and double-click it. LR opens then with this catalog.
Don't forget that next time LR closes and the backup dialog comes up you have to change the backup location to where the backup should be.
Alternate procedure: In the Library Module (Grid Mode) >Catalog Panel select <All Photographs> or whatever the name of your main catalog is.
Select >File >Export as Catalog and select the location where your main catalog should be.
To prevent the problem from happening it is worthwile to ckeck occasionally in >Catalog Settings >General Tab that the working catalog is where it should be; and also to ckeck the location of the backup in the backup catalog.

  • What is the best method of backing up my digital files (catalog) in the Photoshop Elements Organizer

What is the best method or service for backing up my digital files (catalog) in the Organizer from Photoshop Elements 12. Since there no longer is  the automatic  Elements sync available I do not know what to choose. I have tried to back this up using my external drive, but I cannot find the digital images per se. I see the entire program but not the catalog of pictures. Also, I have a windows operating system and Adobe  Revel offers no edit capabilities with this OS.

I'm in a similar situation including movies I've purchased from iTunes...
    Here's my setup:
I have all my iTunes data (music, movies, etc.) as well as about 10 GB of photos stored on a nework storage device that uses RAID-5 with SATA disks. This is basically a little toaster-sized NAS machine with four hard drives in it (www.infrant.com). If one of these drives dies, I get alerted and can insert a new one without missing a beat since the data is stored redundantly across all drives. I can also just yank out any one of the four drives while the thing is running and my data is still safe (I tried this after I bought it as a test).
That's how I prevent problems with a single disk... Redundancy
    Now onto "backups"...
Nightly, my little RAID toaster automatically backs itself up to an attached 250GB USB drive. However, these backups are only of my critical data... documents, photos and home movies... I don't bother backing up my "Hollywood" movies since I can live without them in a disaster.
... I actually don't permanently store anything I care about on a laptop or a desktop. It all goes on the NAS box (Network Sttached Storage) and then my other computers use it as a network drive. It's attached via Gigbait to my main computer and via wireless to most everything else.
My achilles heel is that I don't store anything outside of my house yet. If I was smart, I'd alternate two USB drives attached to my NAS box and always keep one of them somewhere else (Safe Deposit Box?).
...and that's just one way to do it.

  • Move Catalog Album 2 to Elements 5

I have assembled about 7500 photos on Album. Up until now I have had to move each photo I wish to work on to Elements 3 for editing. I am installing Elements 5 (as soon as I can get rid of the error message 1327 Invalid drive E).
    I have 2 issues:
    1. Using backup in Album and then restore in Elements 5 can I move my catelog to the Elements organizer from the Album 2? Is it that simple?
    2. I also want to move my photo files from my 5 year old external hard drive to a new one. Should this be done after the move to Elements and is it as simple as back up to the new drive and then restore using the new drive destantion?

I accomplished the move from PSA2 to PSE5 about 2 or 3 years ago.
My memory is kinda fuzzy, but I think you simply need to do a File->Open in PSE5 and point to the existing PSA2 catalog. Not complicated at all.
Moving files ... do this only after your PSE5 catalog is working properly. You don't use the Backup function to move files, you use the Move function (or PSE5's folder location view) to do the move, and the backup function to do a backup. Keep the idea of move and backup separate.
And by the way, you definitely
    b must
have a backup of your photos on a separate physical medium (DVDs or different hard drive).

  • Catalog Restore crashes Photoshop Elements 4.0

I appreciate that I have an old product (Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0), but it has worked perfectly for several years on an IBM R50e laptop running Windows XP SP3.
I need to replace my old laptop and have installed the product on an Acer Aspire laptop running Windows. I selected the option to run it in compatibility mode and I have tested it carefully using my old catalog on an external drive.
As far as I can tell everything works perfectly apart from one thing.
I can backup the catalog succesfully, but when I try to restore the catalog (using the option from the file menu, Photoshop Elements crashes.
This compromises completely my future use of the product, as I will not be able to rely on a backup to restore if I get problems.
Is there any advice, solution or workaround that you can suggest?
I am keen not to lose my 1000's of photographs!

  • My catalog won't backup in Elemnents 11

The backup sequence freezes up when calculating the stotal media size of the file. It freezes up at 32%. This also happened with Elements 10.

It looks like that for some reason Organizer is not able to read a particular file for calculating its media size and it got stuck. We need to find out that particular file and need to temporarily remove it from the Organizer catalog.
When the backup process starts, Organizer writes the details of Backup process in the log file located at "%appdata%/Adobe/Elements Organizer/11.0/Organizer/Log.txt". For this, log level need to be set at verbose level to get that information in the log file. Here is how you can do this -
    1. Open the Registry Editor i.e. Type Regedit on the Run command.
    2. Navigate to the following path in the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Elements Organizer\11.0\Organizer]
    3. There is a registry key with name "LogFileMsgLevel". When you double click it, it would have value as 5.
    4. Change its value from 5 to 6
    5. Close the Registry Editor and relaunch the Organizer
Try to take the backup again. When the backup process stucks in calculating media size, just copy the Log file from the path mentioned above to your desktop and open it in the wordpad. Search for entry "Calculating total Media Size started...." in the log file and see what is the last file entry in the log file.
Please try these steps and let me know your results.

  • How do I move the tags and catalogs from old Photoshop Elements on old computer to new computer?

I am trying to move my Photoshop Elements information to a new computer.  I have gotten the software installed, and the picture files moved over, but the tags and catalogs are not showing up on the new computer.  From looking online, it looks like there is a way to attach that information to the files on the old computer before transferring them over.  Ugh!  Hindsight!  Having already transferred over 35,000 jpg files to my new computer, is there any other way to move that information over without deleting all those files on my new computer and starting from scratch?

Even if you have the same folder structure, the organizer will find that the internal serial number of the drive is different and show all files as missing; you'll need to reconnect. That's why the backup and restore method is better. It also recognizes the need to upgrade (convert) the catalog format to the new version of Elements.

  • Problem updating catalog, from non-working Elements 8, to vs. 13.

I purchased and downloaded Photoshop Elements 13, Windows; upgrading from vs. 8. Can't update the Catalog file; got error message. Previous version of Elements will no longer open; that's why I bought new version.

Update:  Spent a good part of a frustrating day on this - after Adobe refused assistance (via Chat); told me my only recourse was via forums. Fortunately, I seem to have solved the problem; in multiple steps, which were basically trial and error.  Version 8 did start working again - really not sure what worked! But I messed with several things.  Was able to make use of some of the tips I found in help menus, once that was solved, to convert my original catalog.  Then to use Vs. 13, I figured out that you have to select something besides the default "ELive" (on the top bar), to have access to the Manage Catalogs menu, etc.  This isn't mentioned anywhere, but it was a stumbling block for me.

  • Make an (external) backup elements 7

I have Photoshop Elements 7.0.0.0. I try to make a backup on an external hard drive. The files are on the hard drive but I can't open it. What i have to do?

    Make a full backup:
Insert Your CD/DVD or plug in your external hard drive
Click File >>Backup Catalog to CD, DVD or Hard Drive
Check Full Backup, then click Next
Select the drive letter for your CD ROM drive or External Hard Drive (click the browse button and navigate to a specific folder if you wish)
    Then click Done
Wait for PSE7 to write the backup
Once you have a full backup you can make incremental backups in future which will be much quicker.
Don’t use the same folder, make a new one. Once you have a full back up you can make incremental back ups but you need to follow a set routine. It’s not very intuitive.
Start by creating a new folder or label a new CD/DVD Disk - it’s best to use dates e.g. “PSE7 incr backup 20130811”
Press Ctrl+B and check Incremental, then click Next
Highlight your drive containing the last backup and click the bottom Browse button (previous back up file) then navigate to the TLY file and click open.
Click the Browse button above and navigate to your new folder “PSE7 inc backup 20130811”
    Click Done.
If your full backup originally contained 500 images, the incremental backup will only contain changes since the last backup e.g. files B000501.jpg, B000502.jpg etc
If you ever have to do a complete restore you start with the TLY file from the latest incremental backup. The program automatically recognizes the number of incremental steps and you will be prompted to insert a disc or navigate to the appropriate drive.
Incremental backup’s are obviously much quicker to write to disk but I recommend that you periodically perform another  full backup and delete any earlier backups.

  • Where Does Lightroom Store  Catalogs, Previews, and Backups?

    1.   By default, where does LR store:
    a. Catalogs (.lrcat)
    b. Previews (.lrdata)
    c. Backups of Catalogs and Previews
    2.  Can these locations be changed?
2a. If so, how does one specify where LR will store each of the above?
    3. Is there a specific relationship of location the Catalog, the Preview, and the Backups, or any partial combination of those three,  must remain in?
    3a. If so, what is/are that/those relationships?

    a) By default in the Lightroom folder within My Pictures / Pictures
    b) Always in the same folder as the catalogue
    c) Wherever you tell it - which should be somewhere different. No backup of Previews.
Re 2, just move the catalogue in Explorer / Finder, double click it. If you didn't move the Previews, LR starts a new one in the same folder as the catalogue, following (b) above.
Re 3, answered above. Backups can / should be elsewhere and it's your choice where.
Notice that in Catalog Settings there's a Show button that reveals where your catalogue is.
