Cataloge conversion PSE7- PSE8 dumps

I'm getting desperate; I have been a loyal user of PSE over the last 5+ years and have invested a lot of effort in tagging etc of my 42.000 pictures!
When doing the convertion of the catalouge from v7 to v8 terminates the PSE after 57% completion.
The log file (pse-conversion-log_xxx) is empty.
I've tryed http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/#_Updating_File_Metadata - the logfile is attached.
Do you have any suggestions of what to try?
I'm running Win7.
* There are no missing links.
* I've executed a repair (forced, as there were no reported errors) and an optimise in v7 prior to conversion.
* V7 were not running during conversion.
* I've tried on two different computers

Thanks John for your prompt and detailed reply. I've tried step 4/5  with no luck. I do not dare running with an unconverted version 7 under version 8.
So, I have no other choice than to do a manual conversion.
I'll follow the following plan:
1. Write all tag info to the jpg files using http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/ from v7.
2. create a new v8 catalouge
3. import all pictures from folders in the v8 catalouge
4. manually rebuild the tag hierarchy (380!!!)
5. store the album information from v7 using psedbtool -writeMetadata to Excel.
6. If possible then update the album info direcy to the database (ANY COMMENTS? / SUGGESTIONS)
7. If this is impossible then build a keyboard/windows macro to build my 214 albums using macro express http://www.macros.com/

  • PSE10 Catalog Conversion from Windows XP to Windows 7-64

    Hi,
I have a catalog conversion issue when moving from Windows XP to Windows 7-64 while at the same time upgrading from PSE8 to PSE10.
All my photos on the Windows XP machine were in the following folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures
Files were transfered across the network using Windows Easy Transfer to the new computer. I then installed PSE8 and was able to see my photo folders in the Organizer Folder View at the path listed above.
After installing PSE10 the location of my photo files remain in the same folder but are not accessible through Folder View in the Organizer.  I can see all the photos in Date View.
In other words, the PSE10 folder view doesn't show the old "Documents and Settings" path under Computer\C: even if I set the View to show Hidden files.  It does, however, show the entire folder path under "C:\Users\My Name\Pictures" but none of the folders are marked as being included in the Organizer.
There seems to be a Windows alias between "C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures"   and   "C:\Users\My Name\Pictures"   but the Catalog is not picking it up.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi,
You just hit on something there.  After opening the timeline I clicked on one of the bars and Voila! a group of folders appeared in the folder view containing all of my photo folders.  Seems there was a "Documents and Settings" folder INSIDE the  Pictures folder at the same level as all the individual photo folders.
Strange thing...drilling down into the "my pictures" folders ALL folders are marked as having photos in the organizer even though many are not part of the database.
    So, here's the path:
    C:\Users\Paul Valentine\Pictures\Documents and Settings\Paul Valentine\My Documents\My Pictures\
To add insult to injury, every time you click on the "+" sign to expand a folder, PSE10 decides you want to go all the way back to the top of the folder list so you then have to navigate back to the folder you just expanded.  That's a real pain.
So, is there any good way to get things moved "back" to the proper location?
BTW, Thanks for all the great help...and Ken I might just have to try the repair technique if I continue to hit the brick wall...

  • Catalog Conversion Problem

I have been trying to convert a photo catalog from Photoshop Album 2 to Photoshop Elements 9.  The PSA is on an XP system and the PSE 9 is on Windows 7.   The backup and restore both go fine.  The conversion begins and stops right at 27% every time.  I get an error telling me to repiar with original software.  I've tried just about everything I know and have seen on the blogs with no success.  I removed any photo creations from the catalog and that did not help.  The catalog contains a few thousand photos that are really well organized by my 80 year old mother and I'm petrified she will lose them. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.  Neither product is supported any longer by Adobe.

The catalog conversion process is quite buggy, and PSE 6 and later have serious bugs in handling drives.  As a first step in troubleshooting, download and run the utility psedbtool:

Copy and paste the output here -- come to the Web to post your reply, rather than using email, since the Adobe forum software will truncate your reply.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 catalog conversion solution

The Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer failed to convert my Photoshop Elements 6 catalog until I ran the PSE11 Organizer under the built-in Windows 7 Administrator account. I did not find this solution mentioned during my efforts to solve this installation problem. It was not a suggestion I found in Adobe's help files dealing with catalog conversion. So here is a summary for others with this problem.
I installed Photoshop Elements 11 on my Dell XPS 9000 running Windows 7 Pro x64. I retained my PSE6 installation. I have nearly 20,000 cataloged images in my PSE6 catalog.
Problems began when the PSE11 Organizer failed to convert my PSE6 catalog to the new PSE11 format. The process seemed to run to completion, but then an error message said the conversion had failed. The suggestion was to repair and optimize the PSE6 catalog using PSE6, then try converting again. Conversion to PSE11 still failed. I spent a few hours searching for suggestions and solutions and tried each of them without success.
I then found one suggestion that the problem might involve permissions. The suggestion was to right click PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe in its installation folder (which on my computer is at at D:\Photo\Elements 11 Organizer) and run Organizer as an administrator. This also failed. However it did get me thinking about permissions.
Even though my personal account on my computer is an administrator account, I logged off my personal account and logged on to my computer's built-in Administrator account that comes with Windows 7. I don't think I've used that account for any other purpose since I set up this computer 3 years ago.
I then ran the PSE11 Elements Organizer using the Administrator account and the catalog conversion ran to completion and all seemed correct.
However, when I went to the folder where I kept my PSE6 catalog (G:\0-PSElementsCatalog\FamilyPhotos-6), the new PSE11 catalog was not there. Instead, PSE11 had put the converted catalog in the (absolutely awful) default location at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\FamilyPhotos-6). Using the PSE11 Organizer, I renamed the catalog to G:\0-PSElementsCatalog\FamilyPhotos-11(ConvertedFrom6). I then used PSE11 Organizer to move the converted catalog to my preferred location on my G: drive.
    All is now well.
Why did I have to use the built-in Administrator account to do the catalog conversion? What permissions does it have that my personal account (also an Administrator) does not have? Some years ago I encountered a similar problem that involved permissions on a registry key, not permissions on files or folders. Perhaps someone at Adobe can enlighten us.

    One thing puzzles me:

I don't understand why running the exe from the installation folder would have worked.
I would have simply tried to run that exe from its real location :
Sorry, I can't help you more about permissions...

  • Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer catalog conversion

I'm having trouble converting Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer.  I get a Conversion Failed error which tells me to repair with the program that created it.  I have tried several things including deleting all .avi files from the catalog, deleting references to missing files and backing up then trying to convert from an external HD.  I'm running Vista Home Premium on a HP laptop.  The Organizer optimize and repair don't seem to help in this case.
Does anyone have any history with this or advice?

Please refer to following KB article which deals with catalog conversion failures:-

If you open the Organizer and go to Edit>Preferences>Camera or Card Reader, do you have Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader on Device Connect checked?
Try checking that if you don't.

  • Can I convert pse3 catalog to pse7 on windows 7 and retain all my albums and vcds that I made?

Can I convert pse3 catalog to pse7 on windows7 and retain all my albums and vcds? and how do I do it?

I have no experience with PSE3, only from PSE4 on.
Have a look at that note:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
    And:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/common-catalog-issues-upgrade-elements.html
I suppose there is a way to 'write metadata to files' in PSE3. This writes all your tags, captions and ratings from your catalog to the metadata header of each of your media files. Those are recognized and recovered if you 'get photos and videos...' from files or folders in ulterior versions of Elements.

  • Organizer in PSE 11 hangs on catalog converted from PSE8

I just installed PSE 11 and converted my catalog from PSE 8.  I have over 50,000 images in the catalog.  Immediately the Organizer starts on the people recognition (I had all Auto-Analyze turned off in PSE8).  I am able to cancel the People Recognition but before I can do anything else (only a couple of seconds) , some other process automatically starts--the hourglass cursor appears. Task Manager states that the Organizer is not responding so it is evidently going into some long process of analyzing data.    I  have the pictures all tagged (most with multiple tags) and am not interested in having Organizer identify them.   I am running on Windows 7.    What can I do -- just let the Orgnizer run?  I have let it run for about 90 minutes with no response-- and no idea what it is doing.

okay, I was able to retrieve all the thumbnails - but the albums that I had created are no longer listed as albums -- guess it doesn't matter but it's very confusing to me -- and I'm not a mac or computer illiterate person - I've used PSE 8 for years and that seemed more intuitive to me!!  I guess I need to get a book -- any suggestions on one that does a step by step?  maybe I need one of those PSE 11 for dummies!!

  • Lightroom 1 catalog conversion to Lightroom 2 hanging, etc

We just bought Lightroom 2 and are trying to upgrade from 1.4.  When we launch lightroom 2 and go to convert the version 1 catalogs, we are experiencing tremendously long conversion times and the application goes in and out of "not responding" spinning beach ball states.  Eventually the catalog will convert, but upon re-opening Lightroom it similarly takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes to open, with bouts of "application not responding" in the force quit area and spinning beach ball.  It will eventually open, but obviously this isn't practical for use.
We have tried this on numerous version 1 catalogs, and on 3 different Macintoshes, one running 10.6.3, the other 2 10.5.8.  I have tried to delete the previews, as I said moved to different machines, reinstall, etc.  If I create a brand new catalog and import photos into it, all is good--performance seems fine, etc.  I am currently attempting to create a new catalog and then import from a converted catalog, but I am having the application hangs during the process as before.
The catalog in question is around 37000 photos, but as I have read in the forums, it seems like that isn't really an issue.  Particularly when the behavior in version 1.4 was perfectly acceptable and did not have the application hangs.
All machines in question are Intel-based MacPro's or iMacs with at least 4-6G of RAM.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brian

The Previews 'folder' often appears as a file, but on one of my Macs, it 'is' a folder, but in any event, you did it by deleting the .lrdata file. (You can use Show Package contents on that file and it'll open just like any folder.)
What happens when you launch LR 2 and go to Open Catalog and choose the old one?

  • Photoshop Elements Catalog Conversion Stalls @ 37%

I recently upgraded to Photoshop Elements 11 from 10, but each time I try to convert the catalog, it stalls at 37%.  I don't get an error message, it just stops here (and I've tried letting it run for HOURS). Here's what the screen shows:
I have tried making sure iTunes is not running and that there are no other processes for older versions of PSE running.  I've restarted my computer, tried running the program as an administrator, and just tried re-doing the conversion.  It always stalls at the same spot, though.
I tried opening up PSE 10 so I could repair the catalog and make sure certain functions were turned off (like facial recognition), but PSE begins updating and then stalls at 100%.  I can't use the PSE 10 organizer at all because of this.  I'm thinking this is happening because some of the catalog has already been converted?  I don't know.  All I know is that I'm beyond frustrated.  I had issues when I updated to PSE 10, and I was hoping this upgrade might go more smoothly.
I did back up my PSE 10 catalog before I started all of this.  I like the new look/feel of PSE 11, and I'm excited to begin using it.  But, I have almost 55,000 photos, and I'm not going to start all over on my organizing/tagging/sorting. So, any help would be appreciated.  Oh, and BTW...I have a working knowledge of computers and the program, but I'm no computer expert. Thanks so much for your advice.

I see you have already tried the usual methods.
One thing that puzzles me is the screenshot with the file 'thumbs.5.cache'.
That file is the cache storing the thumbnails : it's an sqlite database just like the main catalog : catalog.pse11db.
Normally, when you 'optimize' the catalog, that cache file is rebuilt, but sometimes the only way to replace it is to delete it, and wait for the Organizer to rebuild it (several hours in your case...)
It would not hurt to do so in PSE10 before trying the conversion.
The conversion in PSE11 also converts (or make a copy ?) of the cache file.
In my tests, the conversions in PSE11 do work even if the cache file is missing, and even if there are missing files. So, trying to convert without the cache file and let the Organizer rebuild the thumbnails in PSE11 is possible.
    Edit:
I see 99jon was on the same track.

  • Catalog conversion error from PSE 9 to PSE10

Each time I try to convert the PSE 9 catalog using PSE10 I get an unspecified error.
I had problems after initially loading the programs and probably didn't choose the correct option to convert the catalog when first prompted. (I loaded Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Premiere 10).  I currently have PSE 9.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the programs.  When I tried to convert the catalog, the program acted it was going to work, but then the conversion stopped part way through and gave me the error.
After a couple of tries more unsuccessful tries at converting the catalog, I logged out of the program.  The next time I opened the PSE10 Organizer, it showed a message that said it was updating and seemed to get stuck in a loop.  I stopped the program and restarted it with the same result.  I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the programs again so that I could get past this step.
Before I tried to convert again from PSE 10, I first tried to repair and optimize the catalog from PSE 9.  That did not seem to help and I got the same unspecified error part way through the conversion.
    Please advise.

    Ken,
I wanted to thank you for your help and tell you how the problem got resolved.
I sat down last night to implement some of your suggestions below and the Adobe chat window popped up.  I decided to give that a try.
My previous attempts at conversion of the catalog from PSE9 to PSE 10 seemed to stop at about 35% complete and then I got an unspecified error message.  After a few false starts, t he technician had me find a temporary file that was created in that process.  In my case the program added temp 1 to the catalog folder name, so it was in a folder called  My catalog 1 temp 1.  Surprisingly, choosing that catalog in the catalog manager window  resulted in what appeared to be a complete catalog/set of  thumbnails in the PSE 10 organizer.  The technician then had me restore my PSE9 backup in PSE10  (I did a PSE 9 backup before I installed the 10 software) .  The restore  took some time so I haven't had the opportunity to put it to the test but everything seems to be there, incuding videos and face recognition and I confirmed that I have access to the organizer  from Premiere 10  also.  I hope this helps you help someone else.
I hope Adobe developers read these forums and use that information to improve their programs this was an awful experience.
    Thanks,
    Kim

  • Catalog conversion error PSE 6 to 7

I am running Windows Vista and I am in the process of upgrading from PSE 6 to 7. I have 3 catalogs; 2 converted just fine, the third will not convert. It is "My Catalog". It fails instantly upon selecting the convert button. As instructed, I went back to PSE6 and repaired the catalog multiple times with and without optimizing. I cannot find a coversion error message as other posts have referred to. It also continues to show up on the regular list of catalogs; I do not have to check previously converted catalogs to see it listed.
I was also able to create a new catalog and import some photos with no issue. If anyone can offer suggestions on how to get this last catalog converted, I would certainly appreciate it. I have even un- and re-installed PSE7 twice to no avail.
I expected this upgrade to be simpler than going from 5 to 6 which was complicated by switching to a new computer and changing from XP to Vista but this is proving to be equally as frustrating!
Thanks for any advice and Happy New Year!
    -Barb

    Barb,
Glad you got it converted. I reread the thread and did some tests you were right that it was a disk-space problem. Its another bug in PSE, and youve still got some careful cleaning-up to do.
Your PSE 6 catalog is stored in the folder:
    C:\Program Data\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog
You appear to have your photos stored in subfolders of My Catalog. Most likely this occurred when you used backup/restore to move from XP/PSE 5 to Vista/PSE 6 last year the restore will place all your photos within the catalog folder.
When PSE 7 converts a catalog, the first thing it does is try to make a copy of the entire catalog folder, including any subfolders containing your photos. As you discovered, this will fail immediately (with no helpful error message) if there isnt enough free disk space.
However, if the copy succeeds, it then converts the PSE 6 catalog database file (catalog.psedb). But the new PSE 7 catalog still refers to the
original location of your photos, in your PSE 6 catalog folder:
    C:\Program Data\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog
The copies placed in your PSE 7 catalog folder arent being used they were needlessly copied by PSE 7. So you most likely have 56 GB of disk space consumed by unused copies of all your photos.
To clean this up, you can first verify the locations of the photos in the PSE 7 catalog by using the Organizers Properties window. Do they indeed refer to the location of your PSE 6 catalog folder?
If so, then use Help > System Info to find the location of the PSE 7 catalog folder. Then you can delete all the subfolders of that folder containing the unused copies of your photos. To be extra conservative, I would first move those folders somewhere else on your disk, and then in PSE 7 give the File > Reconnect > All Missing, to verify that they indeed arent being referenced by the PSE 7 catalog. Once youve verified that, you can safely delete them.
I'll file a bug report with Adobe.

  • PSE 10 Catalog Conversion (from PSE 6) fails

Installed 10, prompted to convert catalog from previous version.  All is well so far.  Process starts, gets to 34% and hangs.  Eventually times out and says conversion failed, that the catalog should be repaired in original app.  I repaired in PSE 6 (though it did not say it needed to, did anyway).  Then went back to PSE 10.  Selected PSE 6 catalog and it completed conversion in 2 seconds 16, 227 photos, I don't think so!)  Sure enough no photos came over to PSE 10.
I am now in a state where I can only get to my photos from PSE 10 and can not get the catalog to PSE 10.  Please help??

There may be several reasons for this conversion failure, especially from version 6. I had two main catalogs and several smaller ones for projects for friends. Before trying the conversions, I did just like you, a repair and optimize before converting. In most cases, no problems. However I met two different failures.
One was due to the fact I had a couple of pictures in jpeg2000 format. The jpeg2000 format plugin was present in PSE6, not in PSE10.
In that case, instead of asking PSE10 to convert, I did a backup in PSE6 and a restore from PSE10 : bingo, I got a message showing the offending files. So my advice is to use the backup/restore way which does an automatic conversion with less problems.
The second case was on one of my main catalogs, which showed its age, with a lot of transfers between computers via backups on various external disks. I simply used psedbtools to check if something was wrong with my PSE6 catalog. (http://johnrellis.best.vwh.net/psedbtool/).
The result was 4 types of drives errors in the catalog from the 7 shown by John R Ellis... The organizer did handle that perfectly withi PSE6 : I never noticed errors in backup/restore. But as stated in the help documentation, those errors can be very problematic when upgrading to versions above 6.
So my advice now : first try the backup/restore way, then if not successful, install and run psedbtool and report back for more help.
