Catalogs in Elements 6 ( spliting a large catalog )

Is there a way to split a large catalog into smaller catalogs, for example a catalog that contains images from several years split into catalogs for each year.
Creating a new catalog and importing your previously edited images means that you have to re-tag them all and stack them, they will then not be in version sets.
The new catalogs of images when split from the main catalog should retain the original tags and be identical to the main catalog. Images when viewed in the browser should show all edits and be in there version stacks.
Is this possible or am I expecting to much?

I misspoke in PSE 6, the command to optimize the catalog is File > Catalog > Optimize.
> You would think, based upon first principles of how a database works, that compacting/repairing it would make it run faster. Pretty much every database works this way.
I agree. But based solely on reports on these forums and at ElementsVillage.com, I get the impression that PSE 5 catalog bloat and fragmentation is much worse than PSE 6. There have been many postings where people have improved PSE 5 performance and dramatically shrunk their catalog file by recovering. But I dont recall any such reports for PSE 6. (This is all from memory, so I may be wildly wrong.)
I just optimized my PSE 6 catalog (12K photos) for the first time in at least 6 months. It shrunk from 41 MB to 40.5 MB.
By the way, modern databases have facilities for automatic or background compaction that try to minimize impact on applications. SQLite has such a mode, but I just checked and it looks like PSE 6 doesnt enable it.

  • Copy Catalog in Elements 10 to new catalog?

I want to create a new catalog made up of part of my existing one.  I thought I could do this by copying my existing catalog to a new catalog and then simply deleting what I do not want in the new catalog, but I can't figure out how to copy the catalog.  For both of these two catalogs, the image files will all remain where they are currently.

I would favor a second solution in your situation. Simply make a full backup before cleaning your catalog.
Not sure what happens in new versions of PSE, but making a full backup does not give you a copy of your catalog to work with, unless you also do a restore, which would of course include 2nd copies of all photos.
If the goal is to delete the original catalog once you are sure the copied catalog is ok, it is equivalent to having a backup before attempting a risky change in the catalog. If you are paranoid and don't trust a PSE backup, the only way to test it is to do a restore elsewhere. Not a bad idea (like having belt and suspenders...)
I totally agree with the dangers of having several catalogs. I think that's a good reason why Adobe provides an option to MOVE catalogs, not to DUPLICATE them, even if that's simple. The more I see posts about catalog problems, the more I think the full backup process in PSE is the best advice I can give. Users wanting to use alternative backup methods should absolutely understand how catalogs are stored and include the catalog folders paths into their backup procedure.
My only complaint about the backup process is that it does happen that a user thinks the backup is complete when it is not : missing, empty or corrupted catalog.tly file. There should be a test and confirmation process before issuing the 'restore complete' message. I don't have the problem because my backups have the dual purpose of safety and transfer to another computer : a backup is always followed by a restore.

  • How do I get my catalogs from elements 8 to elements 11? [was:transfering catalogs]

How do I get my catalogs from elements 8 to elements 11?

    It depends...
If you are still on the same computer and OS, the Organizer in PSE11 (or PSE12) will be able to convert the old catalog to its own format, while keeping the old catalog unchanged.
If you are changing computer, drive or OS, the best method is via a full backup and restore:

Which operating system are you running on?

Try Holding down the shift key while to start the organizer - that should bring up the Catalog Manager.
Click on the New button (top right)
Give it a name and click ok
If it still crashes, you may need to re-install the software.

  • I can't locate my catalog in Elements 8.0 to convert to 10.0

I've watched the tutorial to convert my catalog but I don't have anything that remotely resembles the Organizer on my screen.  When I go to File, there is no catalog.  I upgraded to Elements 10.0 and also use Lightroom but chose to maintain Elements to do things that Lightroom can't like layers.  I don't want all the organization that I've done on my old photos to disappear and don't want to import my Lightroom catalog into Elements.  What am I doing wrong?  Where would the Elements catalog file reside on my drive and what would the file extension be?  I did a search on Catalog and came up empty.  I'm using Mac with Lion OS.

Thanks for trying.  I was on a Chat with someone from the Adobe team and I got no help whatsoever.  Basically his response was that I needed to reimport all my phoios.  That means I lose all my keywording and editng.  What's the point?  Ok, I'm just ranting.  Really, thanks for all efforts!
Did you see my remark about Mac PSE8 having Bridge and not Organizer ? Since nobody corrected me, I am confident that you can't find a catalog, which is only an Organizer feature. As far as I know, Bridge does not store your keywords, only thumbnails. So your keywords must have been saved within your media files themselves. That means that if you re-import those files in an Organizer catalog, you'll get them back. The advice to reimport is a sound one.
Just note that with the Organizer, it is a good idea to use the 'Write metadata to files' feature in the file menu, that is an additional way to backup your tagging work and it makes your tagging available to non Adobe softwares.

  • Back-up doesn't progress. I have a large catalog...should I keep waiting or is something wrong?

I am trying to do an incremental back-up. The Organizer has been calculating total media size for over 14 hours and is still at the initial 3%.  I have a large catalog.Should I keep waiting or is something wrong?

I have mine set to not push or automatically check my email, it only checks my email when I actually use the mail app. I also keep 3G turned off unless I'm using an app that needs to get online like safari, mail or Pandora radio. Just this week I wanted to see how long it would last with my normal usage to go from full to zero and it was in stand by most of the time but I played a few games, used safari and mail a few times (I use 3G at work but at home it's turned off b/c I use my wifi connection)used it as an ipod a couple times in the car, had a few phone calls and several text messages and I think I played around with the GPS and map utility on the drive home from work one day and in the end it lasted almost 48 hours. I was plugged into my laptop for about 5-10 minutes to sync so it was charging then but overall I was quite happy with the battery.
3G and automatic mail checking certainly drains the battery but I expected that when I got it. I wish there was a button on the home screen to turn 3G on and off instead of having to go into the control panel but it's not too inconvenient.
Remember that Apple recommends that you fully cycle the battery once a month, fully charge it then let it drain to zero then fully charge it again.

I have a large catalog that I am putting on the web and I want people who have a slow connection to know that the file is still loading. Is there a way to add a progress bar to my file in Indesign CS5 or must I bring it into flash to optain this feature?

How is your file itself going to show a progres bar if it isn't loaded yet?  Seems to me it would have to load before it could do anything like that.

  • Catalog convert Elements Organizer 8 to 10 fails

I just purchased Elements 10.  The Catalog Convert runs for a while, stops at 34% complete for a long time, then completes with "catalog converted successfully".  But, only part of the catalog is available in 10 after the conversion.  No photos afdter 2009 are there.  I ran a repair on the Elements Organizer 8 catalog (no errors), then an optimize.  Ran the converion again with the same results.  Any and all help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks !!

I have never met the situation described here, with the "catalog converted successfully" message.
    Other suggestions :
    - Install psedbtools to find out if there is a drive letter or serial number problem.
    http://johnrellis.best.vwh.net/psedbtool/
    - Try a backup from pse8 to an external media, then a restore from pse10. I have found this is able to show offending files that would not be caught by the normal converson. The principle is that PSE10 first restores the files, then converts the catalog to version 10. In the first stage, you may get a message during the restore, telling you there is a problem with some files which are shown. For instance I had a plugin installed for jpeg 2000 files in my old version, and nothing in PSE10. The files were found which enabled me to install the plugin in PSE10.

  • Migrate Catalogs from Elements 4.0 to Elements 13.0  - Is it possible?

I am moving from Elements 4.0 to Elements 13.0.  I have made a securitycopy of the catalog in Elements 4.0 and I am trying to convert it to the later version. But it is not working!
Any hints?  Or is the step too long?  I did read that there were a change in DB-format between Elements 5.0 and Elements 6.0.  Can it have some impact?

  • Convert catalogs: Photoshop Elements 10 to 11

    Hello,
After the installation of Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 on my new system, the catalogs of version 10 do not appear for the conversion to version 11; my 2 catalogs are installed on a LACIE-2BIG NAS system. Any idea regarding this issue? Thanks.

I suppose you still have version 10 available on your new computer ?
I have no experience with NAS drives, but I think it would be interesting to test the conversion after moving (from PSE10) the old catalog to the default location on your main drive : menu catalog manager, 'move' button.
The catalog folder will be moved to the default location (to be found by the help menu, system info).
Perhaps this will make it accessible to the PSE11 conversion option.
Note that sometimes in the 'conversion' dialog of PSE11 you have to check the option to 'show previously converted catalogs'.

Yes - I can run both versions on my PC.  But I really would like to have all of my pictures in the same catalog.
You can't merge catalogs (even PSE13 ones) in any PSE version (only LR can do that). So, converting catalogs is not the solution to your problem.
Since you have PSE5 working on your computer and your images also, the solution is to 'write metadata to files in PSE5) and to re-import the images in the PSE13 catalog. That won't duplicate your image files and you'll lose albums/collections, stacks and version sets, but you'll recover tags, captions and ratings.
To be able to re-import the files indexed in PSE5, you may have to move them to a new master folder.
I am not sure what your problem with the conversion may be. It's quite possible that the resulting catalog.pse13db is ok and that the issue lies in the ability to open it in the PSE13 organizer.
As stated by dj_page, double clicking on that file should open the organizer with the new catalog. You could test that by creating a dummy catalog in PSE13 and importing a small batch of photos. Locate the path of the catalog with the menu Help/system info. Copy the catalog.pse13db in another folder and the 'double click' way to open the organizer with that moved catalog database.
