Catalogue Back up

My catalogue backup in Elements 12 Organser does not complete, it runs to 65 -75% then freezes, this has happened everytime so I have no catalogue backup. I have 1500 items in the catalogue which uses about 5 mb, any ideas ?

It's not a large catalog; so there should be no problems.
Do you have any unusual files or unsupported video clips?
You could try optimizing catalog before running the backup, also try catalog repair and if nothing found to repair, repair anyway.

  • PSE 6 How to get my catalogue back?

I was trying to send some photos to CRAIGS list and I became hung up Photo shop and could not exit.  Finally after a reBOOT I got back into P-shop but I had no pictures displayed. I tried a photosearch to find all pictures and it found 12,521 pic.  I finally did a select all and only 50 Pic. were received.  Most of them were taken several years ago. I think my photos are not all in the same file. I don't understand whats going on.
I do have a Aadobe backup taken 10/27/2009 is that my best option?    Also is there any way in P.shop to make pictures smaller? (less Pixels).  I was going to order PSE8 but am not sure now that it is the best time to install a new program    Bill

I finally found the catalogue reconnect function and my pictures are all back. Yes I made another back up.

  • How to get my catalogue back after a Lightroom view cache error?

LR5 - Been working on a wedding on an external hard drive. While working on it...LR blinks out and closes. Tried to reopen...but keeps saying that there is a catalogue error and that lightroom will try to fix it the next time it fires up. Nope. I tried 8 times and this includes complete reboots...but error doesn't go away. Jump on the forums and they said to delete the Cache folder and then when I reboot that LR would have to recreate that and it would take some time.
I did that....all 100K+ previews....this took some time. I then go to restart LR5 and it is as though the software was brand new....no photos at all....not missing file.....gone! My photos are still on my external hard drive - no harm done. But to start the editing process over again on the two weddings I have on there....would take HOURS!!
IS there a way to get the edits and photos back without re-importing them? I do not have backup LR5 files before the import of this wedding.

John thanks for hanging in there with me! I am a photographer first.....and then a computer technician....like 12th.
I had checked the Recycle bin prior to your message and there is no such file like that in my bin. When I go to the LR file...and click on the Lightroom5 catalogue file....it opens lightroom and has none of my older files in it. I was calling the preview files the data files...sorry I did not know the correct jargon for those files.
It sounds like I may  have deleted the original Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat. And then according to the forum...emptied my bin. When I opened lightroom again it created another Lightroom5 Catalog.lrcat file. When I click on it....as to open the catalogue...it opens LR with just the  68 photos that I put back into lightroom today for I need to get some editing done. I am not sure if this could have made going back to the way things were even possible. I have two weddings and three family shoots that are coming up on deadline...so I was just trying to get some done before it go too close to the end of my delivery periods.
I had an IT guy come over....and he was kind of lost when it came down to this. He believes all is lost. I was just hoping there was a way of importing the preview files....to regenerate the catalogue....to regain my edits...but if I deleted the lr5 catalogue file....it sounds like I may be at a dead end? Is this correct?

  • Restoring Vista(32bit) PSE6 back-up catalogue to WIN7(64bit)

I recently upgraded from Vista(32bit) to Windows 7(64bit) but before doing so I backed up my PSE6 catalogue to an eternal HDD.  Now I find I am unable to restore the catalogue back to PSE Organiser.  can anybody throw any light on the subject?

You need to shed more light on the subject.
What does it mean to say "I am unable to restore..."?? What did you do? How did you create the backup? How did you try to restore? What do you see on your computer screen that makes you believe that you weren't able to restore the catalog? Is there an error message?

  • Help! How to open PSE 7 without opening catalogue

Tried to migrate from PSE 7 to PSE 9. After catalog conversion the browser seemed to open normally, however crashes in a few seconds. Called the Adobe helpdesk, they come to the conclusion that the catalogue is corrupt, however catalogue functioned normally in PSE 7. Since the catalogue has now been converted, it cannot open in PSE 7 anymore. I was happy having made a back up, but if I want to restore the back up,  PSE 7 is automatically opening the old - converted/ corrupt - catalogue and... hangs. Has anybody within Adobe thought of the possibility to open the software without, automatically, opening the catalogue. Seems particulary useful in these kind of circumstances.
I have tried to open and at the same time helding the ALT + SHIFT+ CTRL keys but that does not work.
First of all I d like to migrate with my old catalogue to PSE 9, but at least I would like to still be able to open my old catalogue (back up version) in PSE 7.
    Many thanks in advance
    Paul
    OS: Windows Vista

    Ken,
The converted catalog is on its original location (hence original version is overwritten). PSE 7 crashes when opening this catalog.
The backup of the original catalog is on an external drive. Now I want to restore the back-up catalog, my understanding is I need to do this with PSE 7. (I tried it with PSE 9 too but got an error message).
However when I open the PSE 7 software/ organiser it starts automatically to open the converted/ corrupted catalogue and the program crashes...
So key question is: how can I start up PSE without opening automatically a catalogue (then being able to restore the BU)
    Thanks for your help.

  • Catalogue Export / Import messes Folders structure

    Hi,
I've trawled the net, searched forums and been told to go away by Adobe so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.
We have a network drive where we store clients photos/images. When visiting a client we'll export as catalogue onto a MacBook. Whilst at the clients we review the images and make some adjustments to crop, color or whatever or maybe just some metadata info. We then return and import the amended catalogue back into Lightroom but when doing so Lightroom adds extra Folders into LR or doesn't put the folder back where it should be like this:
Network Drive is on Volume CPhotos which shows as a folder in Lightroom like this:
    CPhotos
    -ABC Client
    --Shoot1
    --Shoot2
    -DEF Client
    --Shoot 1
    --Shoot 2
    etc
We export ABC Client and folders to the Macbook. When we return we import the ABC Client catalogue LR does one of these two things to the folder structure so we're left with this:
    CPhotos
    -ABC Client
    --Shoot1
    --Shoot2
    ---CPhotos
-----Shoot 1 (if we've performed an edit at the client on these images)
    -DEF Client
    --Shoot 1
    --Shoot 2
    etc
OR if we remove ABC Client from LR before we import we get an extra CPhotos folder added with the client placed as a subfolder like this:
    CPhotos
    CPhotos <--Extra CPhotos folder
--ABC Client <-- ABC Client now lives under CPhotos/CPhotos
    ---Shoot1
    ---Shoot2
    -DEF Client
    --Shoot 1
    --Shoot 2
    etc
Removing the ABC Client before the import is the best option because we just drag it back to where it should be and delete the now empty extra CPhotos folder but in the long run it's just a pain and a time waste.
Any ideas warmly received - maybe there's something I'm missing or doing wrong?
    Thanks for reading!
    Chris

"We then return and import the amended catalogue back into Lightroom but when doing so Lightroom adds extra Folders into LR or doesn't put the folder back where it should be like this:"
It sounds like, when you do the import from catalog, you are importing the catalogue with the images. The steps would normally be:
    1. Export from catalog, including negatives, and use this on the other machine
    2. On other machine, export as catalog, but not including the negatives
    3. On main machine, import as catalog.
In step 3, LR is importing a catalogue into your main one, and figures out the pics aren't where they were on the other machine. It then looks around its own database for the files and matches them up.

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer Catalogues

I have several different catalogues within the Elements Organizer 9. I recently restored one catalog from a DVD backup. Now, none of my catalogs are availabe for viewing. There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere within the catalog menu for locating the other ones. I didn't back those ones up, as there should be no reason for them to completely disappear. The two shown in the image below are the one that I restored and the other's blank. Is there something that I need to do to bring they other catalogues back? I'm assuming they must still exist, and it would be a pain to re-tag all of the thousands of images within each of the different catalogues. If you need more clarification, let me know.

Thank you so much, that helped me to locate the catologues. I can now open them from there, although if I open one, they all still don't show up in the catologue menu. That's alright, this is still a simple work-around to access all of these catalogues. Thank you for the quick response, I appreciate it.

  • Elements catalogue restoration

A Happy New Year to all.  I think I've made a fundamental mistake and would appreciate any help in resolving it.
On old PC, ran Elements 6 - had a number of albums set up to organise my photos.  Upgraded my PC.  Foolishly did not run Elements catalogue back-up procedure, as I should have done, but simply copied all the files in the catalogue location on my PC - which I found in the "system info" option under the "Help" menu.  Set up new PC and loaded Lightroom 3.  It found, and imported all the photos in my "Pictures" folder OK.  However, none of the previous Elements album information was captured so that level of organisation disappeared.
To try and fix this, I reloaded Elements 6 on my new PC, but am not able to "restore" the catalogue as I did not back it up.  Tried pointing it to the files I copied from the catalogue location above, but it's searching for a file with an extension which is not there (obviously the back-up file).
Any ideas on how I can resolve the problem and recover my "lost" albums?
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Harry

Thanks for your reply.  The old PC is now unavailable.  I've now decided that it's a lost cause and have resorted to setting all my old Elements albums up as "collections" on Lightroom.  With 22,000 images, that'll be a good day's work.
Not a mistake I'll be making again.
    Thanks,
    Harry

  • LR catalogue and updating to Snow leopard

    Hei,
I am about to update my my OS X (Leopard) to Snowleopard and was thinking of doing a complete update, since my mac has become quite slow, so I'd like to use this opportunity.
My question is concerning my LR (v. 2.4) catalogue. I don't store my photos on my mac itself but on external hds and use Time Machine to only back up my system. After reinstalling LR on Snow leopard, is it enough to put the catalogue back to the same destination it was on Leopard? Will the LR catalogue find the photos on the ext. hds?
It would be a desaster if all LR work would have be in vain, approx. a year worth of work.
Has anyone done what I am about to do? Any experience? Any idea how to do this?
    thanks for any answers!

    A couple of comments:
    1) Apple do not recommend doing what used to be called an "erase and install" with Snow Leopard however there are plenty of sites that recommend what you are proposing. I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on a machine with a fair number of existing apps installed without doing an erase (I don't have the time) and have had no problems.
    2) In terms of ensuring your "edits" are saved, you should ensure that you have saved the changes you have made to the metadata for the images on your external hard-drive. I have LR2.4 set to do this automatically (i.e. write xmp) but if you don't you can select to save metadata to those files (before you upgrade OS) under the "Metadata" menu item.

  • How do i reinstall lr5 and restore the backup catalogues. Also preset folder, preferences, preview

Recently, i had to do a clean re-install of windows 7hp. And also i saved the needed data. of course i lost all of my downloaded software etc.  Their is a second drive on my computer with lightroom;its backups and a folder entitled all my photos. The same material for lightroom is backed up to an external hard drive.   How do i go about re-installing lr5 ,  and restore the catalogue back ups and the other folders.? I need a step by step set of procedures here as i  am a computer stupie.  Thanks for your help!

After the catalogue restore is done, will this leave this cat. folder   in the same disk under lightroom  or will this folder be deleted.  I have all of the lightroom folders backed up on an external hard drive.   Last step is to move all my pictures from the all my photos folder to lightrm. Is this correct?  How is this done?  By an import in the lightroom software using import, move.or copy on the top import toolbar.  I know i sound paranoid on doing these procedures correctly as i do not wish to lose any catalogues etc..   Thanks for your help!!
Not sure where you came up with these steps from
Step 1 ... either should work, but the download is the most recent version
Step 2 ... double-click on the latest catalog backup, yes
Step 3 ... Catalog is whereever you double-clicked on the backup file, you can move it whereever you want thereafter, using your operating system with Lightroom closed
Step 4 ... no moving of photos should be needed, definitely NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING, if the photos are not linked in Lightroom, then follow these instructions http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm and remember NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING and did I mention that you should not import your photos?
For future reference, you stated that you had Lightroom and its backups on the same drive ... do not do this ... backups must go on a different physical drive

  • RAW FILES NOT LARGE AFTER OUTSOURCING LR SMART PREVIEWS : images staying at Smart Preview sizes. What is wrong?

My friend's RAW files won't go back to the large size they were after outsourcing LR SMART PREVIEWS to outsource editor.
what went wrong?  When she sent the files to the outsourcer they were NOT zipped together.
They were ZIPPED back to her however.

Describe exactly what steps were taken. It doesn't make sense that the editor sent her smart previews. Normally she would do Export to Catalog, checking the box to include smart previews, and send this exported catalogue and its smart previews to the editor. The editor would then send the catalogue back to her (the smart previews are no longer needed), and she would do File > Import from Another Catalog.

  • LIghtroom 2 or 2.1 ate my keywords, 10,000 images without keywords

    Help
i have just realized that LR no longer has keywords for images either from 2 or 2.1 upgrade time. I ma not sure if they came into LR2, becuse i was too busy to pay attention. Anyway, i have MacBook Pro running 10.5 OS, 4 GB memory, all RAW photo files on a separate hard drive. I do have LR1.x catalogue backed up but no idea what to do now. i have seen a couple places on the internet that said a similar problem existed, but the fix did nothing for me.
    thanks
    Joyce

LR ate my Keywords when I upgraded from 2 to 2.1. 5000 of my images lost keywords.
I don't like that every upgrade I have to rekeyword, or get a fix.

  • Where are all of LR5 custom settings saved on a PC, i.e, Export Presets & Watermarks?

I need to reload my entire system, and don't want to have to start fresh with LR5.  I would like to import all of my existing settings.
I have all my photos and catalogues backed up, but not sure about LR5 customisation settings.

Go to Edit>Preferences>Presets>Show Lightroom Presets Folder.
These folders are usually (see below) actually in the same folder called 'Lightroom' where your catalog lives.
If you back up the entire 'Lightroom' folder they should be there unless you have elected to put the folder elsewhere.
Either way 'Show Lightroom Presets Folder' takes one there.
You can copy and back it up seperately or as part of the greater 'ightroom folder' back up.

  • XMP confusion

I just can't get my head around this xmp thing. Some basic info:
    I use DNG files
I back-up my Lightroom catalogue every time Lightroom exits
and under catalogue settings >metadata I have ticked:
Include develop settings in metadata inside jpeg, tiff & psd files
+ Automatically write changes into xmp
I am about to start using Photoshop
    Some questions please:
    1) When I exit Lightroom & back-up my catalogue, does this also write the xmp into my DNG, or must this be a separate operation
    2) I've heard that auto' write changes into xmp can slow things down - is this correct for someone like myself who doesn't work with a huge number of images
    3) From what I've read it seems to me that maybe when I send LR4 images to PS for further editing I should ensure that LR4 edits are written into xmp (so even if catalogue back-up writes xmp to the dng, if I've made say develop module changes during current session I'd still need to write changes to xmp before opening with PS)
The more I read about this the more confused I become. Can someone please answer these questions as simply as possible
    Many thanks

    Exporting Files
LR embeds metadata from the catalog into all exported files and, if the Edit In feature is used (e.g. Edit in Photoshop), re-imports metadata from the file once editing is complete. This is entirely automated, requiring no manual operations from the photographer. This applies to all supported export formats (JPG, TIFF, PSD and DNG).
    Modifying Metadata Within LR
If he so wishes the photographer may want to update metadata from within LR. By default, these changes remain inside the catalogue. The photographer may wish to manually update the file using Library > Metadata > Save Metadata to File or automatically using the Edit > Preferences > Catalog Settings > Editing > Automatically write changes into XMP. Same goes for Develop settings if the Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files is selected.
If metadata on RAW format files are modified and updated (manually or automatically) then a sidecar xxx.xmp file is generated/updated in the same folder as the original in order to avoid corrupting proprietary RAW files.
    Modifying Metadata Outside LR
If metadata is edited independent of LR, LR prompts the photographer by displaying an arrow symbol in the top right of the image in Grid and Filmstrip previews. The photographer can either update LR from the file or re-write LR metadata to the file by clicking on the arrow or the using the features above.
It should be noted that whilst advantageous to keep Develop and other metadata stored in image files in order to more effectively interface with other applications and protect from Catalog failure, it isn’t strictly necessary because exporting transfers the metadata anyway and your catalogue should be backed up regularly.
Furthermore, assuming automatic update mode, constantly writing and re-writing out your master image files (not RAW) just because metadata has changed on the off-chance you might want to refer to that metadata outside of LR seems like an unnecessary overhead to me. Also, the fact that most backup programs will be compelled to re-backup your files adds to the system burden.
Maybe it would be worth it if you planned to have two instances of LR running using shared image files – maybe a desktop and laptop with NAS?
I don’t know, the case for turning this automatic XMP update hasn’t been made for me and my workflow. Maybe it will be for yours.
Roy, to answer your questions specifically:
Per advice from dj – separate operation but can be automated
Per advice from dj, though I believe there has to be a performance impact when re-writing out master files just because you added a keyword or increased the white balance temperature by a few kelvin. Imagine adding a simple keyword to 10, 000 images...and then backing them all up.
I disagree with dj on this, sending images to PS does involve xmp because LR automatically embeds the latest metadata from the catalogue into the exported file and updates the catalogue from the edited file on return. Nothing to do manually, though.

  • Can't backup PSE 5 - recovery stalls at 66%

I haven't backed up my catalogue in several months (I know - I'm bad...!)   I reconnected missing pics, and then it started the Recovery - and stalled at 66%.  I've read that it might look stall at 33 or 66%, and that it might take some time - but the entire program stops responding, and I cant do anything.  The bottom task bar on my computer disappears, and I can't minimize the program or anything.  I'm running XP.
Help!  I've bought PSE 8 to upgrade, but can't do it if I can't get this catalogue backed up.  (And I have not installed it yet - PSE 5 is the only program currently on my puter...)
    Thanks!

If it is  large catalog it takes some time to restore. Even though it seems stalls at 66 %, it would progress further. Please wait for some time and let it completed.
