Cataloguing "offline" photos.

As my library of photos grow, I'd like to move older, less frequently viewed/used ones to external hard drives. Ideally, I'd like iPhoto to still know about these, and to show a thumbnail representation of them, prompting with a "Please mount volume X to view this photo" when they are selected for viewing/editing. At the same time, of course, I'd like to have the more recent photos online and managed by iPhoto.
I've tried this with my old copy of iPhoto 6 and Leopard, but it just doesn't work. Does iPhoto '09 provide this kind of capability?
Thanks.

If you have any video files in your library that are referenced the library will not be useable. iPhoto will continually try to locate the file and won't let you do anything until the file is found and relinked. So if you plan on having movie/video files put them in a separate library just for them.
I would try a test library with a couple of events of referenced files and open the library with, without and then with the external drive to make sure the links are not broken. I've had mixed success with that.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

    Could you clarify your question?
What version of Premiere Elements do you have and on what computer operating system is it running? Is your inquiry related to a Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements? I ask since you include "photo" in your question, "instavideo", and no mention of an Elements program.
I think that I am interpreting your question differently than SG. My first puzzlement in what I read was what was "instavideo"?
Google search seem to indicate that it was an App for a cell phone. So that led to my request for clarification.
Are you trying to add a computer saved photo to your instavideo for sharing purposes? By offline photo, are you referring to a Save As from Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, not an image export from Premiere Elements Publish+Share/Computer/Image?
In summary, this does not sound like a simple disconnect between Premiere Elements's project and its source media. Its sounds more like a request for a how to for getting your computer photos that were saved to hard drive into the cell phone App instavideo.
Please excuse if I have misinterpreted your question. Please respond to SG's questions first.
    Thanks.

  • Making Offline photos "online"?

I have a bunch of photos that I imported from CDs. When I initially imported them, I chose to keep the full resolution files on the CD's. So in the Elements Organizer the thumbnails for these photos are marked to indicate that the photos are Offline.
I would now like to copy the full resolution photo files to my hard drive and have the Offline indicator removed from them in the Elements Oeganizer.
    How do I do this?
I know I could delete the original thumbnails and re-import the CDs, but then I would have to re-tag all the photos and re-create the Albums they were in.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Yes, using File > Move is the way to get your offline photos back online.
By the way, I strongly recommend not using the offline archiving feature of PSE.  A number of people have reported here that past versions of PSE had corrupted the locations of their offline photos (as recorded in the catalog).   Adobe tech support was of absolutely no help in either fixing the issue or providing a workaround.  They were eventually able to recover all the tagging and other metadata from the catalogs, but it was tedious.
So it's pretty risking using a feature that Adobe has clearly indicated by its deeds that it won't support.

  • Making offline photos online again...

In PSE7, I am trying to move offline photos back online on a larger disk. I've searched the forums and can't find advice that actually works. Any help will be appreciated. Some posting said that I can put the disk holding the offline photos online again and it should just work but the drive letter of the has to be THE SAME as it was when the photos were moved offline. But, is there a way to determine what drive letter PSE thinks this is supposed to be?
    Leif Pederson

    1. Is the drive a USB flash drive (thumb drive) or an external USB hard drive?
    2. When you connect the drive, is its contents accessible in Windows Explorer? Can you see the offline photos on that drive in Explorer? If you cant, then the problem is with the drive or its contents, and dont follow the rest of thes steps.
    3. In PSE, select one of the offline photos. Right-click the photo and select Show Properties. In the Properties General pane, what is the exact path of the photo shown next to the yellow folder icon? (If you cant find the offline photos in you catalog, dont follow the rest of these steps.)
    4. Leave the drive connected.
    5. Download "psedbtool" from here:
    http://johnrellis.com/psedbtool/#_Downloading,_Installing,_and
and follow steps 1 4. This creates the file output.log in the same folder where you extracted psedbtool post its contents here. This will list all the drives that are recorded in PSEs catalog along with all the drives currently connected to your computer.
With this information, we should be able to determine whats going on with your offline files. If youre not comfortable posting that information here (its not really useful to anyone else), click on my name above and email it to me.

  • Grey Thumbnails of some offline photos

    My configuration
    Using LR 3.2
    Windows 7 64bit
    8 gigs ram
I have a catalog of over 200,000 photos spread over one local and 4 external disks.
    Intended result
I need to be able to view all thumbnails for all offline photos
    Problem
When I am scrolling through the thumbnails on the offline disks, randomly some of the thumbnails are grey. I can spend HOURS rendering previews while the disks online but when they are off line I have randomly grey thumbnails again.
Steps taken to try and fix the problem
imported ALL photos to a new catalog - issue happens with new catalog
Render standard preview of all photos - issue still happens
Render full preview of all photos on one external drive - when drive is offline issue still remains

  • Working with offline photos

I have relocated some photos using "Relocate Originals". When they are offline, meaning when the relocated photos are saved in an external hard drive and the drive is not connected, how should I work with those offline photos? For example, is it okay to rotate photos? Is it okay to move offline photos to another folder or project? If I do these, when I reconnected the external hard drive, what would happen?

You cannot make adjustments, print, or export Images whose Originals are off-line.
You can move them within Aperture; assign ratings, keywords, and any other metadata; and export the Image's Preview.

  • Editing offline photos in LR2

    Hello everyone,
From the Adobe web site : "Volume management -New. Freely manage and organize your images across multiple drives, and continue to work with the high-resolution previews even when your originals are offline."
I thought this mean I could do all my editing in the Develop module on an off-line photo as long as the right preview was genarated. LR would keep track of all my changes in its database as long as the photo is still offline and would then try to update the pictures metadata as soon as the photo is back on-line.
I have tried it and it does not work for me: I can not edit offline pictures in the Develop module.
Well, after short research on the web I concluded that may be I was a bit too optimistic in my interpretation of the "continue to work with the high-resolution previews" statement above.
Am I now gettig it right that the only things you can do in LR2 with offline picture is change the ratings, the keywords and similar stuff as well as print in draft mode but you can not edit offline pictures in the Develop module. ...
Alternatively, if I'm supposed to be able to edit offline pictures in the Develop module, does anyone have a clue as to possible reasons why I'm not able to do it ?
    Tx,
    Xtof.

It says "manage and organize" there's no way you can edit the in Develop. Of course, it needs the original to render develop changes.

  • Offline photo-jpeg. Can I resize output of FCP (blackmagic card)

    Hi
So, I've been delivered photo-jpeg offline rushes, all fine but the output of my Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro is of course faithfully reproducing the 320x240 file size! a little annoying to say the least.
My timeline settings are fine i.e internally FCP is running full frame, But I am missing a setup here to resize my output to 720x576 (PAL) so that my eyesight can be safe from even more deterioration?
    Many Thanks
    Tim

I tried changing the "Quality" slider on the DVCPro capture preset, it didn't actully do anything to the visual quality or datarate. SO, that's a sham.
    ProRes: 17.8Mbps
    DVCPRO HD: 14Mbps
    PhotoJPEG: 9.3 Mbps
It looks like I'm staying in ProRes land for the time being, DVCPro looks to present more hassle than its worth, I hate dabbling in the land of pixel aspect ratios almost as much as I hated working in interlaced media (Thank GOD for 60p saving me from the doldrums of 60i)
Going on the web as well, I might end up just halving the framerate in compressor to 30 which will half the datarate right there. I only keep 60p around for the possibility of slow motion, I still rather like the staggered nature of 30fps

  • Find & Restore Offline Photos PSE 5

Back before hard drives were cheap, I used to move photos offline (to CD). I now would like to restore them to my hard drive, but can't find any way to do this other than opening each file and performing an edit, which will restore the file. I want to maintain my tags and captions, so I would rather not just reimport (I moved offline before the option to write tag info to files was available). Does anyone know if there is a way to find and/or restore offline files?
    Thanks,
    Mark

So it appears that you have cd or dvd copies of your photos. That is good. Next question ... how did they get there?
What did you use to put the files on the CD or DVD? I believe you said you moved them there via Windows. If that's right, then you need to move them back to where the Organizer wants them by moving (copying) them in Windows.
How can you tell where the Organizer wants them? Right click on a photo in the Organizer, select Show Properties, and see what folder appears in the window that pops up. Then you know where to move the photos. It may be slow and tedious -- or it may not be, depending on whether your CD/DVDs have folders similar to the ones when the folders were on your hard drive, in which case you should be able to move entire folders back to your hard drive. If you do it this way and you are successful, your tags, captions, notes, GPS locations and any other metadata you assigned will be kept intact. Also, if the Organizer wants your photos on the external hard drive, then you need to move them to the new external hard drive, and this new external hard drive has to have the same drive letter as the old external hard drive.
Creating a new catalog and re-importing everything is a last resort, and you will lose all your tags, captions, notes, etc.
Eventually, once everything is restored and working properly, you should probably use File->Backup Catalog to make backups of your photos and of your catalog. The nice thing about Backup Catalog is that it takes care of everything ... you don't need to know about computers or where the files go or anything. It is the only way I recommend to do things unless you consider yourself a computer expert. I wouldn't worry at all about the speed of backing things up, its better to have a good backup made slowly, and anyway I don't think it is going to be that much slower than windows backups, if it is indeed slower.
In the future, after you get all this working, never use Windows to move, delete or rename your photos. Always use PSE commands or PSE's folder location view to move, delete or rename your photos.

  • How to export preview of offline photo?

I can see an offline preview.
I can print a copy in draft mode.
I can even print to pdf and extract the jpg.
How can I just export the preview as a jpg?

There is one trick that I learned about on this forum. You can print the photo to a pdf. Make sure you disable rescale and sharpening and that you do select draft mode printing. When you select draft mode, Lightroom uses the preview image and does not need the originals. After you have created the pdf, you can suck the photo out of it using Acrobat, Photoshop, and many other tools. Might come in handy if you have "misplaced" a photograph somehow.
