CATALYST 2820, console port config for modem

Hi,
I’m a 2nd semester CCNA student, and I purchased a old CATALYST 2820 switch for training purposes. I do not know the password and the console port has been configured for a modem. I thought that it would be easy to reset the password—but cannot find any way to do it with the 2820, and the console port configured for a modem.
Does anyone know what the default factory password is? If the password has been changed (from the factory default), how can I reset the system?
Thanks!

I appreciate your help!
I did look at that link several times—my 2820 has a mfg. date of Sept 97. I held in the Mode button, but the LED above port 1x does not come on (held it in for over a minute). I never see any info. using the console port.
I did try attaching a modem to the console port—it works—I get a login prompt. I don’t know if it is the factory default password. I know that the rollover cable is working—tried a 827-4v.
Am I doing something wrong???
Thanks, David

  • Router config for console modem access

We're upgrading 2500 series routers with 2811's in several remote sites, and we have preferred modem access to be connected to the console port as opposed to AUX, in order to see boot-up and diagnostics we wouldn't otherwise see. Our only issue is that we aren't replacing the modems out there and some aren't connecting correctly. We obviously need AA turned on, and also be able to continue a session if the cable is moved to another device's console port (like the local switch.) If we were using the AUX port, I know autoconfigure discovery and other commands might fix this; but we'd like to keep the modem connected to the router console port. Are there any router commands I can use?

If I understand correctly these modems were connected on the Aux port of the 2500 & now you intent to connect then on the console port of the 2800, what vendor modems are in use?
The below doc has info on router console port configuration, we will need to configure the correct initialization string on the modem based on the modem vendor (the AT commands will change as per the description based on the modem vendor).

  • Catalyst switch hangs when connecting via console port

    Hi,
I've just started work for a company - they have no network documentation or knowledge of their current set-up whatsoever.
For the LAN in the office they have Cisco Catalyst WS-C3524-XL switches. But it doesn't seem like these are even configured with an IP address for management purposes.
So, I thought I would connect via a console cable to have a look at their configurations and also to investigate some performance problems some users were having on the LAN.
BUT - when I connected to the console cable, all the switch LEDs stopped flickering happily and went solid and everyone in the office lost their network connectivity! (I wasn't popular!)
Rebooting the switch with the console port still connected had no effect - the LEDs remained solid and there was no network connectivity. However, when I removed my console cable, everything started working again!
Does anyone have any ideas a) what can have caused this and b) how I can resolve this problem and connect to the switches without disrupting all the other users!
Note: I subsequently connected to a spare WS-C3524-XL switch using the same laptop and same console cable without any problems.

    Hi,
    thanks for the response.
no, I can't login to the switch(es) at all. There seems to be no response from hyperterminal at all. (Then I noticed that the LEDs had gone "solid" and that everyone started to complain they had lost network connection!)
Even when I powered off and powered on the switch with the console port still connected, nothing appeared on the hyperterminal screen.
However, as mentioned, I'm able to connect to one of our spare switches using the same settings, same laptop, and same console cable - so I guess that would rule these things out as being the cause?
Its definitely a strange one, especially as it seems to be affecting all 3 of the live switches!

  • Which one is the console port of a cisco catalyst 500 express ?

i cant find it anywhere ?

    jillesmiedema,
I haven't used that type of Cisco switch myself but did some research and it looks like there is no console port on this switch. It appears to be set up via a GUI application.
    See this link...
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6545/product_data_sheet0900aecd80322aeb.html
    which states this...
The Cisco Catalyst Express 500 Series switches are  designed for ease of use. The switch is initialized through the GUI  Device Manager; no console cable or terminal emulation application is  needed
As far as help setting this switch up please see the following link which should get you started in the right direction...

I have tried to replug power cable but this didn't help, please let me know if I could replug stack power for this switch without outage of other switches in the stack, since switches are connected into the ring
Please let me know what might be the possible root cause

    Hello,
There is a problem with the stacking connection between switch 4 and 2. Can you try replacing the stacking cable between these switches?

  • How to get Port Classifications for Logical Switch via scvmm console

    Hello  All,
We are creating some automation tool based on SCVMM console scripts.
In order to create vm we need to assign port classification  based on Virtual Switch and then logical switch. The problem is that I could not find any way to retrieve port classifications assigned to logical switch (Virtual Port tab in SCVMMs logical
switch properties). There is Get-SCLogicalSwitch that return just name, description and some properties. There is also Get-SCUplinkPortProfileSet which returns Uplink tab data of SCVMMs logical switch properties. But no api to retrieve port classifications
for switch. Get-SCPortClassification also doesn't return switch assignments. Any ideas how to get this data?

I think you are looking for
    Get-SCVirtualNetworkAdapterPortProfileSet.

  • Catalyst 3560 24 port-PoE switch powers on but no STAT LED and console not responding

I rebooted my Catalyst 3560 24 port PoE switch and when it turned on only the STAT LED went green the other LEDs are off.  I get no response from the console port using putty and the cable I used before this happened.  I tested the cable on another switch and it works fine with putty.  What can I do with this switch?

  • Advice about FXS Port configuration for connecting to modems

    Hello all,
We have not confirm the problem, but we are having reports that analog devices like USR V.92 Modems and Power meters are not connecting or dropping the connection.  We have an ISR 2911 with the 4-port FXS-DID WIC (VIC3-4FXS/DID), configure to an internet SIP truck provider.  The Router is running IOS 15.3(3)M2.  If we connect an analog phone to the FXS port and call, voice is clear.  So the question is what configuration settings should we have for FXS ports and/or dialpeers for connections to modems?  Attached is the current configuration of the router.
Do we have to be worried about Codec?  If so which Codec should we configure?
Any Physical FXS settings should be set?
    Are my DSP setup correctly?
Again, I'm at a loss, as voice sounds good and my searches for modem connections to FXS Ports on CUCME is coming up dry.  Any help would be great.
As far as the "Power Meters", we are talking substation power meters.
Thanks for any advice you can spare and your time,
    Nick

    Hi Amit,
No problem on the delay.  Your help is very much appreciated.
You're losing me a bit.  Because I don't know if your giving me dial-peer 1 as an example.  1 being just a random number.  Or your telling me to change my current dial-peer 1 configuration.  Which is currently a pots dial-peer:
    dial-peer voice 1 pots
    description POTS port 0/1/0
    destination-pattern 111111111
    port 0/1/0
dial-peer 1000 voip is our outbound call leg.  Sorry call legs are not exactly clear to me yet.  In fact they haven't been in years.  :)  So change my dial-peer to dial-peer voice 1 voip?
My other question still unknown to me is should we use:
    fax protocol pass-through g711ulaw
Even though we are trying to use a modem and not a fax?  Also this command is a dial-peer command and not a global command.  So what global command should i be using?
Again thank you for your time and help,
    Nick

  • XML script for port config

Is there any way to create an XML template with a scope "port" that would allow you to configure switches with access and trunk ports .  Currently I have to deploy once for the access port configs and then deploy again with one for trunk / uplink. I thought about adding my trunk ports to my base config (scope "device"), but it seems that the cli lines containing "interface" are removed or not processed unless I use the xml template with scope "port".
    Thank you.

    Nope.

Hi Roy, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Special QoS config on the witch port used for unity ?

Hi, I'm actually tunning my qos config and I want to know if you apply a special Qos Config on the sowth port used by unity.
    Thanks

The following document talks about QoS config for Unity Express. You can use the same appropriately for Unity too.

  • Console port not working.

    Hello!
I would like to know if there's some situation what a console port could be disabled, or something like that.
I'm trying to configure a Catalyst 2960 Series PoE-24 by the console port using the hyperterminal, but it's not working. I verified the cable and the COM port, and everything works with another switch (same model).
Does anyone knows what could possibly be happening?

My colleagues have focused on the usual issues that cause the console to not work - possible issues with the terminal emulator or more likely is mis match in the speed setting of the console. If you work through those possibilities and the console still does not work then I have another possibility to suggest. Perhaps someone configure the command no exec under line con 0. This would cause the console to not work. It would display messages during bootup but would not accept any commands.
Does the switch seem to boot up normally? Was it configured with an IP address that you could potentially telnet to? This would give you a way to investigate the configuration.
If my suggestion is correct and the issue is that no exec was configured then you should be able to use password recovery to bypass the existing config and this could restore normal operation for the switch.

  • CISCO 1721 :// No Echo/Response from CONSOLE Port

I have a CISCO 1721 I found in my 'stuff' when I was moving and I want to use it as a home router.  Connecting to the CONSOLE port I get nothing echo'ed back.  I confirmed connection hardware (USB=>Serial/Roll-Over cable, etc) by consoling into my CISCO 1841 lab router.
    Other things I've tried are:
    1) Wireshark'ed CONSOLE port - nothing;
    2.) Wireshark'ed the AUX port - nothing;
3.) Wireshark'ed the ETH port - looks like 'normal' data.
I wanted to see if I could access the CONFIG from the AUX port by directly connecting my Laptop w/ a Roll-Over cable but not sure how to do that w/out a modem.  Any suggestions from anyone??
    Best regards....

The aux port is not restricted to use for modem. Depending on how the router is configured you might be able to start an exec session, get into privilege mode, and access the configuration of the router. I have been successful on similar routers connecting the console cable to the aux port and accessing the router.

  • Is It possible connect two router**from console port to console port

    Hi,
I need this for doing reverse telnet.
    Thanks very much

    No
you can connect router 1's aux port to router 2's console port.
    line aux 0
    password blablabla
    login
    modem InOut
    transport input all
find the aux port's line number which depends on the router model then telnet to a live ip on router 1 on that port.
    Worc_3640#sh line
Tty Typ Tx/Rx A Modem Roty AccO AccI Uses Noise Overruns Int
    0 CTY - - - - - 0 0 0/0 -
    129 AUX 9600/9600 - inout - - - 0 0 0/0 -
    * 130 VTY - - - - - 75 0 0/0 -
so say 10.1.1.100 2129 if 10.1.1.100 is on that box.
    should get you going..
