Catalyst 2950-EMI, QoS, traffic classification and shaping

Dear All,
Can 2950-EMI perform traffic classification and shaping?
Let's say I have some workstations attached on my 2950 and I want to perform traffic classification and shaping on the uplink based on the IP address of workstations.
Thanks a lot.
mak

Shaping is not supported. But you can classify and use policing instead.

How does QoS work with WAAS WCCP? What's the interaction between Router QoS Traffic Classification and WAE Traffic Application Policy?

By default, WAAS preserves the DSCP marking on intercepted packets.  There is a configuration option to set/override the DSCP value at the global (device), application, and classifier levels.  Currently WAAS provides marking only.  There is no action taken by WAAS based on the DSCP value.

  • Configuring QoS for FIOS Router MI-424WR: Traffic Priority and Shaping

Please only read on if you are an experienced internet user familiar with setting the advanced QoS and Firewall settings for the MI-424WR and make use of wireless adaptors from a PC to provide connectivity.
This is my first post and my first week since I moved from Time Warner Cable over to FIOS for iNet (plus HDTV and phone).     While all my services work, the router as delivered and setup is not optimum for internet quality of service.  Instead it was probably out of the box optimized for HDTV and telephone to satisfy most customers and reduce support overhead.   The average FIOS consumer is multimedia sensitive, but that is not so in my genre of internet consumer.   Here in lies the core of my reason for seeking help from like minded and experienced users in this community.
One of the main driving forces in my switching to FIOS was to improve my multiplayer gaming experience where ultra low ping latency and high upload data rates dramatically affect the quality of connection and thus gameplay.    The cable internet service from TimeWarner was providing solid 2MB/1MB down/up data rates with no issues like what Im having now with FIOS.   Again the reason for the switch was both financial and in hope of gaining better data rates and quality of service.   Now with FIOS Im getting about 24/15 down/up data rate on the Extreme FIOS 25/25 plan when measured from my house to Los Angeles server (50 miles away) via Speedtest.net or DslReports.com/tests.     Latency wise, the ping has gone down from 150 to 50ms when measured to my friends who I connect to online that are on the East coast.   The data rate and latency has greatly improved in going from Cable to FIOS.   So far, so good.
Where the problem shows up now, is that now I get an internet "hiccup" every 5-10 minutes that lasts about 1/2 to 2 seconds.   For the average internet user that just streams multimedia or cruises on the net; this is probably undetectable or noticed.   I never had this problem over the same PCs connected wirelessly to my DLINK DGL-4500 Gaming Router when my ISP was TimeWarner's cable service.    Now, using the FIOS and MI-424WR router with everythings being the same; Im experiencing this degregation in quality of service.    Even putting the PC's IP into the DMZ doesnt make any difference, so it is not related to port forwarding.    The issue is squarely in the lap of FIOS and this router as delivered and configured.    This is where the "game" is a foot, and where I need expertise in an area Im new to.
I am not new to being hands on with inet trouble shooting asI have been setting up my own home network (I work from home over VPN to work) for decades;  I would like to leverage the skills of those who are experts in the area that I think can address this issue.   That being QoS and the other device class mechanisms of this router.   Its my guess that this periodic hiccup can be minimized and even eliminated using these advanced features of this all-in-one TV/iNet/Tele router.
With that context being laid down, this hiccup doesnt show up if:
    a.  I connect two PCs connected to the same ethernet hub of the MI-424WR (traffic just over the LAN and not WAN)
    b.  When I was on Cable with my own gaming router wirelessly DHCP connected to my PC and using port forwarding or using the DMZ.
    The hiccup does exist when:
    a.  Going from internet through the MI-424WR to the wireless DHCP connected PC with port forwarding
    b.  Even putting the wireless DHCP connected PC into the MI-424WR's DMZ has no effect
I did read the manual and tried some QoS pritority and shaping and managed to reduce how often the hiccup occured, but I was just making guesses at the settings.   I put in the IP for the PCs I use for my gaming applications (which are very ping and jitter sensitive) into the QoS priority (value 7) and shaping GUI.    Im hoping someone with experience can tell me exactly how to use it and what settings to input.   Im not clear on the device and connection types offered in the QoS menus.
Another thing, is I couldnt find settings for the turning on/off the ICMP echo.   But I assume this is on because it can be pinged by folks on the net to my WAN IP.
Here is the manual for the Verizon provided M424WR router (Current Version of firmware: 20.10.7)
    download link
Here are the QoS traffic priority and shaping values Ive been experimenting with:
Click to view QoS Traffic Priority
Click to view QoS Traffic Shaping
And why it matters to have a solid and stable inet connection for internet gaming?  The hiccup causes slewing or jitter which equates to positional errors in the 3D world that ruins the smooth gameplay that is needed for high end gaming.
Heres a snapshot of me flying the wing of another flight simmer who is on the East coast and me on the West coast.

That's not accurate.  VZ telephone service does not go through the Actiontec.  Also, there are no default settings for QOS in the Actiontec since QOS is rarely needed with FIOS upload speeds.
TMAS wrote:I get an internet "hiccup" every 5-10 minutes that lasts about 1/2 to 2 seconds.
You should not be experiencing periodic "hiccups".  Something is clearly amiss.

Lets see.  The issue shows up on a wireless connection, but not a wired connection.  You think this is a QOS issue and not a wireless issue why?  Have you tried changing the wireless channel?  It very possible you have neighbors on the same channel.  Is the DGL-4500 wireless still on?  Could that be interfering?TMAS wrote:

The settting to enable/disable ICMP echo is on the Firewall/Remote Administration page.

The traffic proirity settings you linked are applied only to your wireless connections.  QOS between the router and your wireless PC will only serve to prioritize traffic between the router and that PC and have no affect on your internet traffic.  Assuming you are not running browsers, VOIP and other traffic from that PC while you're gaming, then that will not accomplish anything.  i.e.  You're giving your only traffic highest priority, but that traffic is not competing with anything (except other nearby wireless connections on the same channel).
On the traffic shaping screenshot, you have broadband ethernet checked, but according to your other thread, your WAN connection is Broadband Coax, not Broadband ethernet.

  • Does Catalyst 2950 support SNA traffic ?

    hello
we are trying to integrate some legacy sna hosts
    to switching enviromnent.
we are faced to a strange symptom when legacy hosts
are connected to 2950 switch no traffic sna pass thru
we checked vlan, ports ,STP, but didnt found any hints
removing 2950 from configuration clear out the problem.
    so simple diagram
    7206 ==wan===7206=ethernet HUB=legacy sna host OK
    ----DLSW----> -------SNA------>
    7206==wab===7206==CAT2950===legacy sna host NO OK
    -----DLSW----> ---------SNA----->
are they any issue on 2950 for SNA traffic .
    thanks in advance
    JYP

    Hi,
in general, No. There are no general issues with sna and a cat2950. The switch doesnt care what type of traffic runs through.
Besides the obviouos, the client and the dlsw router
must be in the same vlan.
There are sometimes problems with a switched environment. I.e if you do trunking with dot1q between the switch and the dlsw router and you use the switch in a mode where it tries to autonegotiate the trunk. Dlsw forwards some of the negotiation packets which leaves the switch in a state where the connections dont work.
We have also seen a problem in some situations where a dot1q trunk is used when the switch is configured for PVSTP, per vlan stp. In that case a special type of bpdu's is send which are also get forwarded by dlsw and can cause the switch on the other end to go to blocking ect.
All of those problems can be fixed by either putting a sap filter onto the bridge group on the dlsw router and only allow the sna saps you need or adopt the switch configuration. I.e. turn of autonegotiation of the trunk mode ect.
The issue needs to be looked at individualy and i would advice to open a case with the tac and work on this problem. So that we can understand what the problem is and fix it.
    thanks....

    Hi all,
i need to know an information about this module.
     Gigabit EtherSwitch 10/100/1000BASE-TX autosensing EHWIC
I found on docs that it supports the SWDRR mechanism for queueing, but does it support also
    traffic shaping and marking ?
i cannot find this info and i'd be thankful if someone knows it or can point me where this info is.
    Thanks a lot

ok, at least Jack is doing better now. Don't know why, I just play around with limits.conf, /etc/pam.d/su and deleted the content of /dev/shm directory.
Now the settings are the same as before, but  I'm getting far less xruns and luckily without these disturbing plopps.

  • Cisco ISE and Catalyst 2950

    Hello!
Please, could you help me? Is it possible to install ISE on Catalyst 2950? In Component Compatibility Guide
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.0.4/compatibility/ise104_sdt.html
Catalyst 2950 only support 802.1X and VLAN.
At first I need to know about VLAN change(from resticted to corporate). Is Catalyst 2950 support it?
    Thaks for help!

this would let both user and machine authenticate. for"5434Endpoint conducted several failed authentications of the same scenario" check  Suppress Anomalous Clients option.  This issue comes in to picture when endpoint attempts a couple of failed authentications and if Suppress Anomalous Clients option with Reject Requests After Detection is enabled then  ISE Policy nodes protect themselves from overwhelming numbers of authentication requests by sending an immediate reject for suppressed clients as opposed to processing all the steps in a normal authentication. So if that user did some authentication failure, he will be locked for 1 hours (bydefault).

  • Cisco Catalyst 2950/2960/3750 Multicast Traffic Preference

    Hello all,
we, as a student company act as an ISP for university dormitories. We would like to (if it's possible) deploy QoS to prefer multicast traffic over all other types of traffic.
    Devices used in network:
Acces layer: Cisco Catalyst 2950,  12.1(22)EA14
Dristribution layer: Cisco Catalyst 2960G, 12.2(58)SE1
Core layer: Cisco Catalyst 3750G, 12.2(52)SE
Do you see any possibility to solve this with these devices? We have almost no experience with QoS, therefore any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I think it should be doable although the 2950s, if non-E variants, are especially weak in QoS features.  I.e. those might create some issues.
With the 2960G and 3750G, you often will create problems when you enable QoS because QoS, by default, allocates its buffers resources for 4 egress queues per port rather than using all for 1 egress queue per port.  However, this can be countered by QoS parameter tuning, but that takes some QoS expertize to match to your traffic and your overall QoS policy.

  • QoS:: Traffic Shaping query

    Hi,
I want to apply QoS:: Traffic shaping with CBWFQ to our enterprise network, i want to ask you that where i should apply classification and QoS policy i mean to which interface. We have a Central site router 3660 and branch sites connected either to F.R E1 or TDM E1. I tried to create class maps and policy maps at the central site router and apply the desired policy to the desired branch site at the subinterface at the main router but CBWFQ is NOT supported at the subinterfaces, Should I apply policy maps at each branch site router or where ???
    plz. HELP

Its always better that the classification be done at the access sites in your case. QOS policies can be applied on any interface. I think they can be applied to sub interface aswell . Please refer to the configuration documents on Frame-Relay to learn how to apply QOS on Frame-relay interfaces.

  • Help with Catalyst 2950 G

    Hi,
I have a doubt about the Catalyst 2950 series, i need to pass both IP and OSI traffic trought a 2950 switch. Is it supported?

The 2950 is a layer2 switch. Anything carried over ethernet will go, no matter which layer3 protocol is used.

    Hello,
what other switches do you have in your network ? If you have just the 2950 and the 3500, make sure that the 2950 is the root switch for all your VLANs, by configuring the global command:
    spanning-tree vlan x priority 0
Also, check the log on the 2950 for the following message:
    SCHAN ERROR INTR: SRC=6 DST=5 OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5
If you see those, chances are that you have a faulty unit. Here is the relevant bug info:
    CSCdv83336 Bug Details
Under certain level of traffic load, the (2950) switch will start logging the following messages on the console:
    SCHAN ERROR INTR: SRC=6 DST=5 OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5
and after a few seconds, the switch will stop passing any traffic. In some cases, the switch seemed still forwarding broadcast and multicast traffic, which will cause STP problem if the switch has redundant link and is not supposed to be the root for the VLAN, as both port will go forwarding.
The same error message has been identified in CSCdu87836.
    An assessment of the impact
    Unit stops passing any traffic.
    WORKAROUND
Several units were returned by CISCO. The units were re-screened to the latest test program, and failed the SDRAM memory test.
Customer should RMA unit back to Cisco

  • Eight-Class Model QoS for voice and video

One of the QoS recomendation in the SRND "Enterprise QoS" is to create a Eight-Class QoS Model utilizing a seperate priority queue for voice and video.
It says that even though you have only one physical priority queue, that LLQ has an implicit policer that allows for time-division multiplexing of the single priority queue. This implicit policer abstract the fact that there is essentially a single LLQ within the algorithm and, thus, allows for the "provisioning" of multiple LLQs.
My question is if anyone has tried this and if there are any limitations on the platforms that can support this "dual-LLQ design."

Design guide which is basically the QoSDesign recommendation bible.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/solution/esm/qossrnd.pdf
It has a large section for WAN recommendations...while you may not
need to follow one of these Based on my understanding what what you
have for a link (DS3) and what you are trying to accomplish, I
believe the following section would be a good place to start.
    - WAN Aggregator QoS Design
    - WAN Edge Classification and Provisioning Models
    - High Link Speed QoS Class Model
    - Eight-Class Model

  • Catalyst 2950 Switch flash_init error

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Cisco products and have a small home lab set up. I have a Catalyst 2950 switch that I would like to restore to factory defaults. Here is the issue I'm having and can't figure out.
I pull the power, telnet into the console port, hold the mode button and restore power. The boot loader (Version 12.1(11r) starts and says the usual message the system was interrupted prior to flash initialization (Paraphrasing here)
I get to the switch: command line, enter flash_init. Flash states it initialized and then all I get is a < with an underscore under it prompt. Anything I try to type comes up as bizarre characters and I can not get back to a switch: prompt unless I reboot the switch manually. Unsure of what to do here.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Traffic Classification in GSM MPLS Backbone

    Hi Experts,
can anyone share how traffic classification is done in the backbone of a 3G GSM operator? I mean, how we should map voice, Gn, Gi, etc. traffic into DSCP? Or maybe can anyone point me to a document that can be reference for this?
    Thanks,
    Prima

Typically your provider should provide you with the provisioning of the queues that they have, and what DSCP values they want to see for each of the queues.  Generally speaking, for MPLS, you use:
EF - real time traffic (voice media)
    AF31 - voice control
    AF41 - video
