Catalyst 8.6 breaks wine

I'm not sure what has happened to my arch system but I've started having these odd graphical issues..
First of all, I'm not sure when these started or what made them start.. I'm not that experienced with linux
so it might have been something I've done with the system or not. But if you can help me track down
and fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Here is some information first:
Computer:
Laptop LG P1 Express Dual
gfx: Ati Mobility X1400
KDE 3.5.9
latest catalyst driver from pacman
First of all, I played around with wine a while back and it worked fine then. Couldn't get the application to work
so I eventually removed the .wine directory. Today, I figured I might play some Dwarf Fortress on my laptop too
so I ran winecfg. Then suddenly BOOM! the screen goes all messed up (dont worry I have a pic and I will post it
a bit further down) and I had to restart X using ctrl-alt-backspace. After relogging I ran winecfg again and it had
made all the necessary files allready so it started up normally and with no probs. So, I decided to try out the
game, tried running it and BOOM, screen goes haywire again. So again, I restart X. I remove .wine again to
see if the problem goes away and if it was just some weird configuration glitch. I run winecfg and there goes
the screen again. So this time I took a screenshot, restarted X and opened the pic.. This is how the screenshot
looked like:
So I had to do remove .wine again and do it all over again and this time I took a pic with my camera. And this
is how the desktop looks on my screen after running winecfg OR the game I was trying to run with wine:
edit: its confirmed that catalyst 8.6 drivers break wine. see link to ati unofficial bugtracker

Tracking down my pacman.log I'd say that the propable cause is the upgrade from catalyst 8.5 to 8.6 since when I first installed wine I was still using 8.5 but now with 8.6 its not working anymore.
edit: looks like this is allready reported: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1173

    2. Update BIOS from Version F.17 to F.24
    3. Install latest INTEL chipset utility drivers.

    6. Restart the system --> Blue screen and Restart (still with the ATIKMPAG.sys problem)
    7. Remove all traces of recent current display driver, CCC etc  with AMD Uninstall Utility or DDU - Display Driver Uninstaller.  ( in the safe mode, since the BSOD prevent to entering windonws in the normal mode )
    8. Re-Install the display drivers
    for step 7 & 8 i repeat and roll it over and over again, and i tried several ATI Display Adapter such as :

    9. Go to the ATI.com. Auto update Graphics Drivers.
    Unfortunately The results is still the same... Blue Screen comes up and restart  ( Problems with"atikmpag.sys" )
    I also tried to delete the file "atikmpag.sys". The results is computer running with standard windows graphics driver.
    I do some Harddisk Test, Memory Test.. all perform well.
    Running with standard display graphics adapter from windows 7 all fine.. no blank screen, no white screen, no stripes.
    Any idea to solve this issues ?

  • Round trip editing with BC?

    Is there round trip editing between Muse and Business Catalyst? Or once it is published to BC and gone live you can still only edit in Muse? If you add a BC tag within Business Catalyst it will break Muse compatibility?

    Hi,
    If you make any changes to the codes generated by Muse else where then the changes are not reflected back in Muse. So, next time you publish/export the changes are not there and you have to make them again.
    Also, refer to this kb article which talks about using the custom code in Muse,

  • Identify if internalFrame is open or closed in desktopPane

    Hi guys. I was wondering if there was any code which could identify if a particular internalFrame is open or close inside a JDesktopPane? The example code are as followed.
    public class jFrame2 extends javax.swing.JFrame {
        JInternalFrame jif1 = new JInternalFrame();
        JInternalFrame jif2 = new JInternalFrame();
        JButton btnOne = new JButton("Frame 1");
        JButton btnTwo = new JButton("Frame 2");
        public jFrame2() {
            loadContents();
        public void loadContents() {
            // Load all contents of the main Frame except the two JInternalFrames
        private void btnOneActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
            // Load JInternalFrame jif1
        private void btnTwoActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
            // Load JInternalFrame jif2
    }I just need a code which could return if internalFrame is open inside the JDesktopPane.

    Some time ago I was trying to achieve the same (or sort of) and came out with this:
        public void hasJif(String title){
            JInternalFrame [] jifs = win.desktop.getAllFrames();
            for(int i = 0; i < jifs.length; i++){
                if(jifs.getTitle().equals(title)){
    jifs[i].dispose();
    break;
    }win is the JFrame, desktop is the JDesktopPane, title as it suggests is the JIF's title that you're looking for, and if it's already in the JDP it is disposed, I don't know if this approach is "neat" (and i guess is not :P) but still it might help you, Here is the  [JIF API|http://java.sun.com/javase/7/docs/api/javax/swing/JInternalFrame.html]  that is always helpful.

  • Renditions versus analytics - identifying folios

    If we're using renditions to serve hi-/low- res content to different iPads, I believe the folio names need to be the same for the different versions. I think this means that in analytics we won't be able to differentiate individual folio downloads for the different resolutions folios, is that right?
    Thanks,
    Toby

    If you have Site Catalyst you can break the folio downloads down by device name, or use a segment to only look at downloads for a specific set of devices. Then you can get numbers for the different resolution folios.

  • SimCity - Outdated Drivers Issue

    Hey guys,
    Basically, I'm running BootCamp 4.0 on my Macbook Pro 2011.
    I bought SimCity a couple of days ago, but the game warned my my graphics drivers were out of date, and that I should update them. How do I do this? I ask because when I do it through the AMD website, I get a message saying that it can't detect any installed grahpics card...
    Thanks a lot,

  • Ichat loud hissing noise

    I was chatting this evening on a latest version MacBook with another user who has the same setup. I was in Barrie and the other person in Toronto. Both of us were complaining about a terrible hissing sound during the chat. I have never had a problem with a sound like this when playing music or watching a clip from the net on the MacBook. Any suggestions why this loud screeching hissing noise exists and how to get rid of it?

    I'm experiencing the exact same problem (though I'm not hearing a hissing, more like, as my brother-in-law described it, the sound of someone breaking wine glasses continually). I tried the iChat for this first time this evening with my brother-in-law, sister and their daughter, and we were getting a pretty horrible feedback noise. While it may work as a solution, using external speakers and/or microphones would seem to be counter to the whole idea of using a laptop. It shouldn't be necessary to lug such things around with you just to get good sound quality in the iChat. Headphones (another possible solution I read about) are impractical if you're having a conversation with more than one person at the other end.
    I'll check out the "Volume" settings in System Preferences and see if that helps things, however.
    Now, the video was great!

  • Random crashes - K8T Neo

    I'm a bit of a novice, and I'm not quite sure how to diagnose this, so I'm looking for some advice.
    The computer will freeze for a few seconds, the monitor will blank out, and then I'm stuck. No beeps or any other kind of alarms. The power stays on. I have to reset the power to reboot and I generally find quite a few hard drive errors on the ensuing chkdsk (deletes incorrect indexes, corrupt files, etc). Sometimes this occurs within one or two minutes or booting up. Sometimes the computer can be powered on for a day or two with no problems. Sometimes it'll happen multiple times a day; sometimes not at all - you get the idea.  I'm using a new mb, cpu, and hard drive, so I'm sure where to start looking for the problem. Here's what I'm running with:
    Motherboard: K8T Neo-FIS2R
    CPU: Athlon 3000+
    Bios version 1.8
    Aspire AS500W Series Power Supply
    Voltage (as read from bios)

     +5.0V: 5.140
     +12V: 11.802
     -12V: -12.071
     -5.0V: -5.026
    Battery: 3.552
    +5VSB: 4.993
    Ram
     Dimm 1: 256MB Samsung PC3200
     Dimm 2: 256MB Samsung PC3200
     Dimm 3: 512MB Kingston ValueRam PC2700
    Seagate ST320082 200GB SATA Drive (Promise driver)
    ATI Radeon 9800XT Video card with Catalyst 4.1 driver
    Win XP Pro SP2
    CPU temp idles at 38C, goes up to about 43C when maxxed. Using stock AMD cooling and 6 case fans
    My first guess is that my mis-matched RAM could be the problem, but I don't know much about this myself. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks...

    Do You have any other psu unit? I'd try and see If getting an Enermax or an Antec cures Your problem.
    C'mon. The guy has 34amps on his 12v rail.
    Even Q-tec PSU's aren't that flaky, to cause that amount of crashes.
    It was just a thought and I was trying to help. Geez...
    Half of what He's asking about look like power problems to Me and It's not like It's an Antec or an Enermax or even a Thermaltake for that matter.
    This person does possibly have a few too many fans though and the Temps don't look too bad, As They are cooler Temps than My 2600+ NF2 system has, Currently 42C/46C(It's in a Desktop ATX case, Not a Tower), I do have a Tower case with temps like His/Hers is, So they don't seem too bad.
    As what isn't being said is, Does this person have enough actual amps coming from the psu for what is running in the PC?
    I've looked at some of those Aspire psu's and I don't think much of the heatsinks on them, It might work Ok on an Athlon xp-m (K7) system, But not on something newer and faster.
    And This Person should try running with just the Kingston ram, It couldn't hurt to try and make sure that the ram is fully seated too.
    And Yeah update those drivers for both the chipset and the video card.

  • GX70 Can't access Catalyst control after update to MSI Win 8.1 Graphics driver

    After upgrading to Win 8.1 (which went fine) I followed the links and installed the latest VGA 8.1 drivers from the MSI website.
    Even though the graphics seem to switching appropriately to discreet card for games and integrated for light use, if I try to access either the Catalyst Control Centre or the Configure Switchable graphics. I get a pop-up window that says:
    "AMD Catalyst control center can not be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using AMD Catalyst Control Center"
    Any ideas?

    Never mind
    Rolled back to Sept AMD Mobility drivers and all is well again.
    FYI... I hadn't noticed but the MSI WIN 8.1 graphics drivers are beta. I don't trust them.

  • FFMPEG screencast is not working for WoW under Wine (AMD Catalyst)

    Hi all. I'm trying to record game video using ffmpeg, but each time when I actually switch my focus to the game window, the picture freezes. Here is the example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4kfKpgcTAE This is World of Warcraft running under wine. I use AMD Catalyst beta-driver from the unofficial repository (mentioned here) on x64 system (lib32-catalyst-utils also installed).
    I tried this:
    ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 30 -i :0.0 -f alsa -i hw:0,0 -acodec flac -vcodec ffvhuff test.mkv (from wiki)
    and some variations I found over the Internet:
    ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 30 -i :0.0 -f alsa -i hw:0,0 -acodec flac -vcodec ffvhuff test.mkv
    None of them worked.
    I guess it's due to driver, because when I tried recordMyDesktop tool a few days ago with xf86-video-ati driver it recorded wideo. But when I switched to proprietary drider, both ffmpeg and recordMyDesktop are not working. I'm not going to change video driver because it's performance in video-games, so I'm wondering if there is any solution to my problem (except windowed-mode!).
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I had similar problems when trying to record OpenGL games with FFMpeg CLI. I use the catalyst-test drivers for my AMD HD 6870.
    You could try downloading SimpleScreenRecorder via yaourt; get both, including the lib32-simplescreenrecorder.
    There will be some conflicts, but choosing to replace some files hasn't caused any problems.
    Make sure you have both  lib32-libpulse and lib32-alsa-plugins installed (pacman).
    Once everything is in set, open SSR (SimpleScreenRecorder); set audio input to:
    - Record Microphone
    - Backend: PulseAudio
    - Source: Monitor of Built-in Audio Analog Stereo
    I chose to output as MKV ; H.264 ; MP3 @128
    Select Start Recording and fire up WoW. I was able to playback the game-play video (full screen 1920x1080) with audio.
    You may need different settings from what I have, notably the audio, but it should record in full screen mode.
    Good luck !

    Hello!
    I'm getting graphic corruption with 3D games on my Arch Linux configuration using Wine and Catalyst. Tried World of Warcraft (also with opengl rendering) and Guild Wars - graphics look stretched and teared.

    I get same problem with guildwars in fullscreen when entering character select. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 to tty then back to get rid of the garbled graphics. Then my characters vanishes except for their armor/effects. Going into windowed mode stops the garbling of the graphics but the bodyless avatars remain. There is one error stands out in wine output but can't find anything specific to this error that helps.

  • Nearly no wine game works with new catalyst 14.1

    I used catalyst in the past and i cant remember ever had this problem
    I installed catalyst-test from AUR because i needed it for better 3D Performance in VirtualBox
    That worked, 3D in VirtualBox is now much better. But nothing in Linux works anymore
    Amnesia for Example just crashes with an Segmentation fault, every wine game i try crashes with semgentation faults.
    Every fucking game on my computer using 3D Graphics just crashes with an Segmentation fault, that gives me two questions
    1. Why is everything segfaulting
    2. Why does VirtualBox work fine with 3D
    Uhm.... yeah.... i have no clue why Ö_Ö the package includes lib32-catalyst (which caused smiliar problems in the past) so normally everything should be there...
    //UPDATE
    Weird, amnesia lost its Executable flag, thats why the Launcher crashed with an segfault, so this problem seems to be limited to wine
    Wine games worked fine before with the OSS Radeon Driver.
    Last edited by Vamp898 (2014-02-03 21:42:35)

    Weird. All my wine games still run as before. Hitman, Dead Sky, Need for Speed et al.
    Running latest Catalyst-test 14.1 with xorg 1.15
    UPDATE: I reinstalled my system and alas, all my wine games stopped working. Guess we'll all have to wait for Violo to return
    Another UPDATE: Got all my steam & wine games working by installing lib32-libxinerama as suggested here

  • Satellite L850 PSKACA: Win 8 AMD Catalyst Manager & Control Center instal

    Satellite L850 PSKACA-03S011
    Hi There
    After installing Windows8 pro upgrade I have the following issue and not sure how to fix this
    Was said I had to reinstall in windows 8
    AMD CATALYST INSTALL MANAGER & ATI CATALYST CONTROL CENTRE
    I need the info how to install these drivers AND LINK TO THE CORRECT DRIVERS TO DOWNLOAD
    Please if someone can help
    Tks Gill

    Hmm it seems that just few Win 8 drivers are released for this unit.
    Ive got another idea.
    Win 8 supports and provides an own repair and fix options.
    Here an useful and interesting information:
    +Windows 8 Recovery & Repair+
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2A03ES0000R01.htm
    There are different ways to recover or repair a PC which are:
    1. Refresh
    2. Reset
    3. Recovering using a recovery media
    4. System Image Recovery
    5. System Restore
    6. Automatic Repair
    7. Command Line
    I would recommend trying the first option called *Refresh:*
    The "Refresh" option is primarily a repair method. It is a great method of returning your PC to a known good state while preserving your files and a great deal of your configuration. With the "Refresh your PC" option, user accounts, data files, and some settings are preserved on your PC without the need to create a backup, or make choices about what to keep or remove
