Catalyst Exporting/Transcoding

Greetings, I'm not very experienced in Catalyst or color correction in general but I can't seem to export/transcode a file using Catalyst and have it "show up" properly.  I would consider myself very experienced using XDCAM Transfer and Content Browser over the years and move files from XDCAM discs, SxS and XQD cards to hard drives or discs with confidence.   I did a shoot today with an FS7 and F5.  No issues moving clips from their respective cards to a hard drive via Nexto 2825.  Out of curiosity, I opened the FS7 clip from the hard drive in Catalyst and did a little messing around with the color correction tools.  I arrived at a look that I liked and proceeded to transcode it back to the client hard drive in the same CLIP folder as the original, ungraded clip.  Catalyst amends the name of the "new" clip with a "_1.MXF" suffix to the original. In reality, it's not really a transcode as the clip was output in the same codec, etc. that it was orignally recorded: XDCAM 422/50 at 1080/29.97 - but it's more of an 'output/export' in my mind.  But whatever...it shows on the drive.  But - what doesn't show are the .XML and .BIM files usually associated with .MXF files. Here's the strange part (to me, anyway...)The new, graded clip DOES show up and can be played if opened/located in XDCAM Transfer, but is not seen by Catalyst or Content Browser. I'm trying to get the new/graded clip to show up as it's own, standalone clip to give the client this option. What am I doing wrong? Thanks,Brian

I've replied to your post in the Catalyst section and will reply here for Sony F5/F55 users: I would have to say you are not using it correctly by putting the destination file to the same original folder, also Catalyst as far as I know does not generate any new XML or BIM files as you see on the card. (Just look at the file date/times and see.) Those files are created by the camera containing metadata for each clip. This also explains why when you go back to the camera clip folder with catalyst it's still showing you the older file - because all the relavant XML and BIM files are still pointing to the original file - not the new one. I think what you've got wrong here is expecting that Catalyst is going to make a new folder structure with all relavent metadata files, it will not. Just output to an entirely new path and give your client that. That's it.

  • What Frame Rate does Catalyst export .SWF at?

What Frame Rate does Catalyst export .SWF at?
When I import a SWF file from Catalyst into another flash program, won't display never mind play, the error I get is that the frame rates don't match,
therefore I need to know what  frame rate it exports at?

If you have a SWF created by Catalyst, and you're using that SWF in something you're creating with Flash Builder or Flash Pro, then I think frame rate shouldn't matter. But maybe if you can give more details I could help more... Which flash program are you importing the SWF into, what commands or code are you using to do the import? Is there an error message or alert, if so what does it say? Any info you can provide will be helpful.
    Thanks

  • Best Export/transcode settings for Sanyo Xacti HD1010 and FCP 6?

Just bought a Sanyo Xacti HD1010, which shoots in 1080p AVCHD/H.264.
    I'm using FCP 6.0.6 on a 24inch Imac 3.06 w/4gb Ram
I'm going to Export/Transcode w/ Mpeg Streamclip (Best free DL ever), and I'm looking for suggestions for export settings to get the best looking footage possible into FCP. I've never really worked with AVCHD before (I'm used to dealing w/ ProRes 422 off HVX-200/P2 cards), and I'm kinda at a loss.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
Not familar with this camera but if you have an intel mac you may be able to use log and transfer to get your footage into Pro Res, if not then Nick Holmes has a great tutorial for using Mpeg Streamclip, just do a search.

  • Flash Catalyst export to HTML5 & DRAG INTERACTION

When will Adobe provide us with these two essential features in Flash catalyst? Leaving out a drag gesture in Flash catalyst is a big let down because drag gesture is a common and often useful gesture for interaction. Adobe's attempt at supporting HTML5 through Adobe Wallaby or Adobe Edge (FLA to HTML5) feels like a wrong direction to me.
If the argument is that HTML5 is the next standard for UX/UI designers then the easiest tool that can replicate what HTML5 can/will do to use a similar animation workflow that can get basic transitions done quickly and that tool is Flash Catalyst. I stand being corrected an attempt to publish HTML5 documents/banners/slideshows with Flash professional will lead to large file size with partly supported features and bugs which can make designers frustrated. I also believe that Adobe can include some backward compatibility checks when publishing to HTML5 from Flash catalyst for browser(s) that do not presently support all the features of  HTML5.
Please can someone feel us in on what Adobe is gonna do to Flash catalyst in the next release.
    Thank you.

Yeah Chris, HTML will evolve with time. But for devices (tablet pc revolution-ipad, android based mobile phones, etc)  and browsers with partial support. Designers using Adobe tools shouldn't be left out of the party(I'm a core designer though I get my hands dirty with some AS & FLEX codes when the need arises). Even if Flash Catalyst's future is tied to Flash Builder which is a good idea in the first place. Why did Adobe omitted drag n drop interaction? It just won't do it if we don't have it in the next official release. It defeats the purpose of the tool (I mean FC). By now Adobe should start warming us up for Multi-Touch Interactions in FC. Designers are dying to see these two features in the next release, else Adobe is performing cosmetic surgery to a patient that requires a cure. Adobe - keep up the good work.

  • Can't see timecode from transcoded footage

I shot some HD footage on a Lumix GH3, with audio recorded on a Zoom H4N. I synced it all up in Pluralize, and exported / transcoded into Prores 422 in Compressor. Now when I import the ProRes clips into Final Cut Pro 7, I cannot see the GH3's timecode. On the master camera file I can see the timecode at for instance 05:39:51:10 but in the ProRes clip it shows as something else related to the clip starting at 00:00:00:00  So how can I retain the original camera timecode after syncing and exporting/transcoding via Compressor? Thanks, I hope that's enough info.

If you exported from the Timeline (where Pluraleyes syncs things up), then the exported file adopts the TIMELINE TIMECODE, which generally starts at 1:00:00;00.  The only way to retain the original timecode is to convert the file to ProRes first, then import and sync.

  • Fireworks vs Catalyst

I'm trying to understand the difference between these two apps.
I am pretty much a complete web app noob. I did use GL a bit years ago, and use Rapidweaver now and then. Pretty much 100% of my design work is print. I have been getting more requests to do web work. I am in that situation that I'm sure is familiar to many print designers - I want to do more web work but the learning curve of some of the web apps seems very daunting.
I finally got around to trying Catalyst. I have to say, so far, I've really been enjoying it. I like that I can build prototypes in Illy and PS and import, and it doesn't seem so deep technically to be intimidating.
In further research I started checking into Fireworks. I've seen it around, but never really looked at it. On the surface both Fireworks and Catalyst look similar (prototyping apps).
It looks like Fireworks can export to an HTML and AIR platform and Catalyst exports to AIR only. Is this correct? Fireworks files can also be brought into DW for further work.
A few of my clients have expressed a concern with producing Flash based sites. I don't know how much of an issue this is anymore. And I believe the search engines are getting better at indexing text within Flash sites.
I did look at SiteGrinder, but was not impressed with the interface.
    TIA

Flash Catalyst is an interactive protoyping tool, which can create features such as an interactive gallery or even a Flash-based web site, I suppose. It's primary goal was to bridge the gap between designers and developers; Designers could mock up an interactive protoype, complete with animation and transitions, with no coding experience at all. This prototype could then be handed off to a developer to "wire up" and make truly functional in Flash Builder.
Fireworks is a screen graphics design application, with basic interactive features built into it. It's used to wireframe, prototype and (in some cases) export a functional web page, but it's also a creative tool with a pretty solid collection of both bitmap and vector tools. Flash Catalyst, on the other hand, has basic drawing tools and relies on programs like Fireworks, Photoshop or Illustrator to supply rich graphics. Unlike FC, FW cannot create animated transitions. Its interactiviyt is limited to HTML/JavaScript interactivity such as rollovers and hyperlinks. For web graphics, its export engine is hard to beat, producing web images that are typically 20 - 30% smaller in file size than Photoshop.
There's not really a FW vs FC situation. The programs complement each other rather than compete, IMO. Sadly, the biggest stumbling blcok at this point is the lack of a round-trip workflow between FW and FC.

  • Export Using QT Conversion Causes Crash

    Is there a bug-report area?

I've got a 2TB Time Capsule as well.
A time capsule is useless for video. That's like telling us you store everything in a 1999 volvo station wagon.
But what's the problem with having only 10GB free?
When you export (transcode) a video file, the system requires a great deal of swap space (scratch space) for the system and the program as there in nowhere near enough ram in your machine to hold all the data in memory during the hideously complex matrix transformations. This space is used temporarily so you will never see it show up in your file browser but if it is not there, the program will crash.
To address this issue you need to clear off space on your system hard drive so that there is adequate free space for the OS AND you need a drive to hold the media and act as a temp storage (scratch) disk for the program files.

  • Exporting anamorphic (2.39:1) footage to DVD

I'm struggling with exporting my film to DVD -- I shot with anamorphic lenses to the wide screen aspect ratio of 2:39:1. I can view the files okay in FCP after checking the anamorphic box. But once I start exporting with compressor, the only wide screen option I get is 16:9 (1.78:1), which looks squished on screen. the same in DVD Studio Pro, the only option for standard definition is 16:9. How can I make the DVD look "un-squished"? Is there any option for manually setting the aspect ratio? I can't seem to find it... Help please!

You'll need to scale the footage in the widest "legal" format, manually letterbox it, and then export/ transcode as usual.

  • Best way to export a film done on Final Cut 7 that's 2 hours long

Hi there, have created a 2 hour film on my IMac but when I try to export it. It keeps crashing half way through. All solutions gratefully received. Thank you.

The codec is mpeg2. Didnt get an error message, it just froze and stopped processing about 3/4 of the way through, cant seem to cope with the number of images.
MPEG-2 is not an editing format but a delivery format. If it's SD you can choose between DV, DVCPro50, or ProRes depending on what the source footage is. Or are you exporting/transcoding to MPEG?
What do you mean number of images? Are you making a slideshow from stills?
Also: try to free up some disk space (keep at least 200 - 250 GB free). If you have a lot of renders you could delete the render files.
    HelpMePleaseX wrote:
I use the latest IMac and export through the compressor.
Are you using the "Send to Compressor" function? If so, don't do that. Compressor has the nasty habit of re-rendering the whole sequence. Export your timeline as QT movie, self-contained, and bring that into Compressor.

  • Feature request

    Hi,
After taking an afternoon to test Beta 2 on a complex UI design I have some suggestions:
    1. You need to add the ability to create masks. I understand there are some work arounds, but masks should be a non-trivial add especially considering how easy they are to use in Flex. I suggest allowing the user to identify an object as a mask (either something created with the drawing tools available in Catalyst, or using imported assets). Then the user can associate objects to be masked with a mask (perhaps via a drop down list containing available masks). You should be able to select a single object or group of objects to be masked.
    2. Text alignment. I don't understand why the ability to align text (left, center, and right) is not in this beta. Also 'point text' and 'area text' are not very intuitive.
    3. Scrollable lists (using direct manipulation, not scroll bars). This one is a bit more complex so I can see why it probably hasn't been implemented yet. I thought Scroll Panel would do this, but it doesn't. The desired behavior is to have something like Data List for example but you can use the mouse (and ideally touch if the target platform is a touch enabled device) to directly scroll the content. Maybe the user could define dragging bounds and then be able to drag/scroll an object within these bounds.
Since I'm also a developer I have a few suggestions that can make the output a bit more developer friendly. One thing that would be awesome is the ability to select a skinned component and export the code for that component. This would allow designers or developers to skin components in Catalyst and then export the code for that component and hand it off to a developer. Currenlty I would have to cut and paste everything out of the single file exported by Catalyst (which is not an ideal workflow for any developer I know). One of the drivers here is that visual designers don't really think in terms of components (well I'm sure some may), they approach a composition as layers of visual elements. Therefore I don't think many visual designers will be able to effectively use Catalyst. Someone like myself, however who is an interaction designer and also a developer could really get a lot out of Catalyst. For a wire-frame oriented exercise I'd use Catalyst to add interactive elements in order to better show intended transitions and ui behaviors and simple share the swf or AIR app with the client for feedback. However for a high-fidelity prototype I would inherit polished graphics (that are also likely going to change during the development process) from a visual designer. In this case if I could use Catalyst to skin the components, export the code for the individual components (as separate classes) and then use that code in my Flex project that would be a dream. What would be even better is once I have skinned a component in catalyst, if the visual designer changes something I can get the new file and update the component automatically due to the (linking between Illustrator or Photoshop and Catalyst), export the code and bring it back into Flex/Flash Builder, effectively changing the visual design without having to make major adjustments to the code. The current way code is exported from Catalyst doesn't help at all unless my only intent would be to add a little extra interactivity. There is a whole other use case for Catalyst that seems mostly unaddressed.
    best,
    -jeff

Hi Jeff, please take a look at my remarks here and let me know if these answers address your issues....
[You need to add the ability to create masks]
... agreed, this is one of the highest priority features for post-1.0.
[I don't understand why the ability to align text (left, center, and right) is not in this beta]
... there are so many possible features, we couldn't get everything into the first release. Our decision was to focus on features that are really unique to Catalyst and that solve problems that are not solved by other tools. Masks and comprehensive text formatting are already available inIllustrator and other tools that interwork with Catalyst, so for now you'll have to use those tools to do this kind of work.
['point text' and 'area text' are not very intuitive.]
... I'll pass on your comment to our UI design folks.
[Scrollable lists (using direct manipulation, not scroll bars).]
... cool feature idea. This would be more of a Flex feature, not really a Catalyst feature per se. But I'll definitely pass it on to the Flex team.
[the ability to select a skinned component and export the code for that component. export the code for a component and hand it off to a developer. Currenlty I would have to cut and paste everything out of the single file exported by Catalyst]
... We don't have a way to do individual skins, but there's 2 ways to do something similar:
    a) in Catalyst's Library panel, do Export Library Package... to create an FXPL file. The FXPL can be imported into Builder as a libray project, and referenced from other Builder projects.
    b) import the Catalyst project (FXP) into Builder, and then selectively move component source files into other projects as desired.
You can find more details at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashcatalyst/articles/flashbuilder_flashcatalyst_workflows.ht ml
[if I could use Catalyst to skin the components, export the code for the individual components (as separate classes) and then use that code in my Flex project that would be a dream.]
... in methods (a) and (b) above, the code for individual components is indeed avaialable as separate classes that you can use in your Flex project.
[What would be even better is once I have skinned a component in catalyst, if the visual designer changes something I can get the new file and update the component automatically due to the (linking between Illustrator or Photoshop and Catalyst), export the code and bring it back into Flex/Flash Builder, effectively changing the visual design without having to make major adjustments to the code]
... in methods (a) and (b) above, you can repeatedly re-import the updated skins into Builder, without the need to revise any of your code.

  • Premiere Elements 8 won't save when I change the presets

I'm trying to convert a recorded presentation from .wmv to .flv for a work website. If I render the video first, and then go to share I can output a .flv file.Although it does take 9 hours for a 1 hour recording.  But for some reason its set to a tiny 320x320 screen size. As soon as I try to change this setting so that it isn't resized the whole thing stops. I don't get a crash message, and windows doesn't say it's not running. It just stops and the CPU sinks from 98% back to 100%.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum.
As Steve points out, WMV is a tough format/CODEC to deal with. It requires a lot of processing to use. It's far easier on the computer and the program, to do the conversion, prior to Import. For an SD (Standard Definition) Project, the recommended DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio is as good as it gets. Editing will be much easier, and Export/Transcoding will go far more quickly. Note: DV-AVI Type II files will be about 13GB/hour of Duration.
There are many conversion programs available, and many are freeware. One that gets a lot of recs. here is Prism. I have never used it, as I have DigitalMedia Converter 2.7, but it's shareware. One feature that I like about it is the batch conversion, even from mixed source files. I load it, check my settings, and hit Convert. After a cup of coffee, all of my files are ready to be Imported and edited.
    Good luck,

  • Importing Movie Files From Handycam DCR-DVD108

I'm trying to import video files from the DVD of my Handycam. When I open the DVD icon on the desktop, I'm given the option to open VR_MOVIE.VRO files. But Quicktime won't play them. Does anyone know what application would open the VRO files?? Thank you!

  • Why is my page or connection jumping all over the place after my recent update to firefox 5.0

I came back from a week away and when I got on the internet firefox had updated to 5.0 and ever since then my pages just jump all over the place Why?

    Hi Aish,
I have found the problem, but not sure where to find the solution as I'm pretty new to Adobe products.
I built another site to see if I had the same problem, this time I made it shorter to see if the length was the problem. I put in some elements and 'assets', added parallax scroll key frames, left out pretty much most other things to see if I could pin the problem down. I found that I had the exact same problem.
In the Muse preview it scrolls with the mouse like a dream when I grab the scroll bar and drag it down. But when I preview in business catalyst, export HTML or preview in browser, it goes crazy and won't let me get to the bottom. Further to that, when you scroll back to the top, everything is out of place and gets worse every time you scroll down and back to the top.
I have a touch screen computer and tried to scroll the screen with my finger rather than dragging the scroll bar down with the mouse. The website works like a dream when I scroll with my finger, even when I scroll back to the top everything stays in place and the whole site works lovely! I then tried the other, long website to see if this was the same case and it was exactly the same case. It scrolls with a finger like a dream, but has a fit when you drag down the scroll bar with a mouse.
My next question would be could I somehow disable some kind of touch scroll option in only the desktop version of the site, but leave it active in mobile and tablet sites? If I can do this can you please advise me on how to deactivate it, I think that should solve the problem.
Can you please get back to me with an answer to this? I would be very greatful!
    Marc.
