Catalyst - stratix gbic

Hi,
I ran into a small problem the other day that I'd like to get some feedback on.
I was connecting a Catalyst 3560 switch and an Allen Bradley Stratix switch via Fiber with LC Connectors. I couldn't get the ports to light up and kept getting "High Power" errors on the stratix end. (I didn't pull the exact logs).
On the catalyst end, I was using a Cisco Branded GBIC.
On the Stratix end, I was using an Allen Bradley branded GBIC.
I wound up putting a Cisco GBIC into the stratix switch and after that everything lit up all right.
Is there a stated requirement to have the same GBIC on both ends? Is there a best practice configuration that I should review to compare to my own?
This is our first time connecting the stratix and the catalyst via fiber, so I am just trying to do it right. ;-)

Maybe the Allen Bradley optic is of a different wavelength?

  • Catalyst 3560 GBIC Connection Drops

We currently have a Catalyst 3560G connected to a Catalyst 3750G via GBICs, and the connection will go up, and then a few seconds later it will go down.  If the GBICs are reseated, the connection will go back up, but then go back down a few seconds later.  The 3750G is connected to two other Catalyst switches via GBICs, and those connections are without issue.  We have tried both GBIC ports on the 3560G, the other free ports on the 3750G, as well as swapping the GBICs between the 3750G and the 3560G, but we end up with the same result of the connection dropping after a few seconds.  I will try swapping the GBICs with know working GBICs when we can afford some downtime, but I wanted to see if there is anything that can be attempted in the meantime.

Post the complete output to the command "sh interface <SFP interface>" of both ends.

  • WS-X4306-GB - Catalyst 4500 6-port GBIC Module & FC Tape Libraries

    WS-X4306-GB - Catalyst 4500 6-port GBIC Module & FC Tape Libraries
I have several Tape Autoloader Libraries from Dell which have Fibre Channel interfaces. I have loop switches that these connect to today. I also have a Catalyst 4506 with a WS-X4306-GB - 6-port GBIC Module. I would like to use the X4306 as a loop switch. Some of the libraries can also connect via point-to-point FC.
Can this be done? If yes, how do I start in making this happen?
    Thank You.

Sorry but the Catalyst 4500 does not support Fibre Channel connections on the WS-X4306-GB (or on any card). It's strictly an Ethernet switch. Reference
To mix and match Ethernet and FC interfaces, you'd have to be on a new platform like the Nexus 5k series - specifically the UP (Unified Port) variants.

  • SFP Mini-GBIC for Catalyst 2960

We are looking at getting the SFP Mini-GBIC from HP HP-J4858C.  This transceiver module is Gigabit-SX-LC Mini-GBIC.  Will this module work on our Catalyst 2960 PoE switches and will it also work using a MultiMode fiber?

I've used non-Cisco GBICs successfully in Cisco gear. In the event of a problem related to the link, the TAC MAY refer you back to the HP or suggest using a Cisco transceiver.
Running a multimode connection that close to the length limit is not the best idea but if that's all you have installed (and you can't get a single mode link installed) then it is what it is. A single mode GBIC WILL NOT operate over multimode fiber.
The high level specs cite distance but the real indicator of usability is better characterized by loss. As long as you getting adequate light levels at the receiver, you will be OK. Problem is, it's not easy to tell light levels (on a non-SMD type transceiver such as Leo suggested) without some relatively costly measurement equipment.

  • Modules Gbic Catalyst 6500

I have a peculiar problem with two gbic modules of Catalyst 6500.
First problem, I have a gbic port in module 7, which was a trunkport to Catalyst 2950, that does not allow conection to switch Catalyst 2950, and besides it harmed the yield of Catalyst 6500. I have to disconnect the optical fiber cable so that everything returned to normality.
Second problem. A port gbic in module 8, I let work and I disconnect of the network to one of the servants, by such reason I had to connect the fiber cable in another one gbic of he himself I module.
My question is: is necessary to change I modulate 7 and 8 not to have network problems on watch? or single to change gbic affected in each one of the modules?
    Thank you,

Failure to get GBIC up during installation could be as a result of system requirements not met, incorrect cable installed, lack of power to the device, configuration errors or hardware failure. Verify that the GBIC cable is connected to another active network device and that the port is not shut down. Replace cable with a known good cable. Make sure GBICs are matched on either side of the connection. Make sure the flow control and port negotiation settings are consistent on both sides of the link. There may be incompatibilities in the implementation of these features if the switches being connected are from different vendors. If in doubt, turn these features off on both switches. Swap GBIC to a different slot. Also, try using a spare GBIC to see if it works. For more information, refer to Troubleshooting link :

  • Gbic on Catalyst 3560

hi, I'm sorry for my poor English.
I have a problem to make some gbic modules work on a catalyst 3560: installing the gbics the catalyst tells me the following error: "_SECURITY_CRYPT-4-ID_MISMATCH: Identification check failed for GBIC in port 65585.". The installed IOS is the following: 12.2(25)SEB2 and the model of gbic it is: GLC-SX-MM =.
Thanks in advance for your attention

Where did you get these SFP GBICs from? It appears you have 3rd Party GBICs. To enable 3rd
Party GBICs, you need to configure it using hidden command "service

  • Gbic loop on catalyst 2960

    Hello,
I would like to know if there is a way to validate that a SFP type 1000baseLX is working properly on catalyst 2960.
I am looking for the loop feature that is available on routers.... but not on switches.
The topology is 2 catalyst 2960 switches with both SFP type 1000baseLX connected together with a fiber. This was working find but actually, the two interfaces are down/down.
The idea is to be sure that the problem is on the fiber and not on one of the SFP....
    Thank You for your help.

UniDirectional Link Detection (UDLD) addresses your concern regarding the fiber. See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_46_se/configuration/guide/swudld.html for more information.
For the SFPs themselves, you might want to review http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4999/products_tech_note09186a00807a30d6.shtml for more information.
    Hope this helps.

  • Catalyst 5500 and WS-G5483 GBICs - Compatible?

Is a WS-X5410 Gigabit Ethernet Module compatible with the copper GBIC WS-G5483? I hope so, or the 5500 goes out in the trash.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, the copper GBIC WS-G5483 or any other copper GBIC is not supported in the CAT5k. Here's a list of switches that support copper GBICs.

  • Troubleshooting Fiber Connection on a Catalyst 2960

I am trying to test my fiber connectivity on a Catalyst 2960 before I deploy it. So what I thought I would do is connect it to another switch in my office with a open port for the fiber connection. The other switch is a Catalyst 3560G. Here are the port configurations:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,100
    switchport mode trunk
    macro description cisco-switch
    interface GigabitEthernet0/25
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,100
    switchport mode trunk
The first one is the catalyst 2960 and the 3560G is the second.
When you show the interface for each of these it shows that it recognizes the media but the line protocal and the GigbitEthernet Port is down.
    Any Ideas?

Sorry... a fiber optic cable with a connector on each end.
To aid in troubleshooting, many times we loopback the signal back to the originating device. An optical loopback is just connecting the transmit (Tx) to the receive (Rx).
The multimode SFP/GBIC transceiver you are using will allow you to directly connect the Transmit and Receive ports without damage to the unit. This should provide you with a green link LED.
If so, then you can reconnect your fibers and loopback (connect the two fibers together) at the far end of the fiber link (use an optical adapter) and see if you get a green LED.

  • Is there a GBIC to sfc patch cable?

I believe the currently installed fiber is GBIC, but the switch converter is mini-GBIC.  Is there a way to get these to work together?
    Thanks.

I'm not really sure what you mean, GBIC is a type of interface convertor  and usually has SC Fibre connectors, the mini-GBIC you are referring to may be an SFP which is a smaller type of interface convertor and usually has LC Fibre connectors.
GBICs and SFPs will work together as long as they are the same type ie Single Mode or Multi Mode and you also need to make sure the TX and RX Optical Power levels are within the specified limits at both ends of the link.
On some switches the command "show inventory" may show the type of interface convertor installed.
    SITE-A-CAT#show inventory
NAME: "SITE-A-CAT", DESCR: "Cisco Catalyst c2950 switch with 24 10/100 BaseTX ports and 2 GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter) slots"

    PID: GBIC_LX           , VID: 30 30 30 30, SN: AGS094801V1
Or try the command "show interfaces gi/x/x/x capabilities" (where gix/x/x) is the interface number.
    PE-CAT-A#show interfaces gi1/1/1 capabilities

  • 3560 Interconnect Cable - Port Disabled b/c non-compliant GBIC

I purchased a CAB-SFP-50CM Catalyst Interconnect Cable to connect two 3560s. When the cable is plugged in, I receive the following error in the Cisco Network Assistant:
Description: Gi0/1: This port has been disabled because Non Compliant Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) connector detected.
Recomendation: Replace connector with cisco compliant Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) connector. Refer switch technical documentation to determine cisco compliant connector. Enable the port again.
Any help? I assumed this would be a "plug and play" installation. Re-enabling the disabled port doesn't seem to help.
    Thanks in advance...

Thanks for the response - this is a Cisco branded cable:
    Manufacturer: CISCO
Description: CATALYST 3560 SFP INTERCONNECT CBL 50CM
    Part Number: CAB-SFP-50CM=
I thought I had done my research...according to the 3560 data sheet
    (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5528/products_data_sheet09186a00801f3d7d.html)
"These ports also support the Cisco Catalyst 3560 SFP Interconnect Cable for establishing a low-cost Gigabit Ethernet point-to-point connection."
However, it doesn't seem to work. Is it possible that I've got a defective cable, or is there something else that I need to do?
    Thanks again.
Edited to add: the cable I have is pictured in the data sheet (Figure 2) and the switches I am trying to interconnect are model WS-C3560-48PS.

  • Determine the serial number on GBIC

Im trying to determine the serial number of Gbics already installed and running on a Catalyst 2950 switch. Is there a specific command to do so? There is a command on Catalyst 4506 that gives all info regarding the Gbic ("show idprom interface gi 1/1")
Is there something equivalent for 2950?
    Thank you in advance!

You may try to snmp poll the entity mib table.
This will give you the name of the physical components:
    1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.7
This will give you the serial number for the components:
    1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.11
Here is an example that shows the component:
    .1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.7.1235 entityMIB.entityMIBObjects.entityPhysical.entPhysicalTable.entPhysicalEntry.entPhysicalName.1235 OCTET STRING Transceiver Gi1/8 "Transceiver Gi1/8"
Here is a poll that references the index number of 1235 (Transceiver Gi1/8) and therefore the GBIC in port Gi1/8:.1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.11.1235 entityMIB.entityMIBObjects.entityPhysical.entPhysicalTable.entPhysicalEntry.entPhysicalSerialNum.1235 OCTET STRING FGS16450R4R      "FGS16450R4R     "
