Catch 22 - forgotten passcode & find My iPad on

With IOS7, & life & such, my daughter has changed & forgotten her passcode.
She wants her life's work & her ipad back.
Itunes on the PC, reports that iCloud claims to not know her, so no backups. - a little annoying.
So: Itunes factor reset?
itunes says:
Find My iPad must be turned off before "Charlotte's tablet" can be restored. Go to iCloud Settings on your iPad ....
Well it is sort of locked.
I saw a post saying this might be considered a bug in IOS7.
Anyone have any insight or update?

If you are able to access/unlock your iPad currently (does not have a passcode) and you are looking to set one up, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Forgotten iPad Passcode after IOS 7 upgrade. Locked out, can't turn off Find my IPad to reset i Pad, Forgotten iPad Passcode after IOS 7 upgrade. Locked out, can't turn off Find my IPad to reset i Pad

iPad upgraded to IOS7.  Passcode was asked.  I have totally forgotten the passcode.  Connected the iPad to my computer for a reset, but window popped up saying to turn off Find my iPad in Settings.  How can I do this, when I'm locked out ?

For all of those who are still searching, here's what I did:
You need to get into "DFU mode".
In order to do this, you
    1. must have synchronised your ipad with itunes before it was blocked
    2. first connect your iPad to iTunes and there make a backup of your iPad
    3. turn off your ipad and wait at least 5 seconds
    4. connect your ipad to itunes
    5. turn it on again, this time pressing Power and Home button at the same time and holding them for EXACTLY 10 seconds
    6. let go of the Power button while still holding the Home button for EXACTLY another 10 seconds.
    7. Your screen must be black now. There must NOT be a picture of a USB cable on the screen because that would be a different mode than the DFU mode.
    8. Itunes tells you that your device is in DFU mode
    9. Go to the "summary" tab in itunes and click restore iPad
    10. itunes gives a warning that all data will be deleted and your iPad will be reset to factory settings.
    11. You accept and click through the process
    12. In the process, you may reinstall your backup. The password will not be reinstalled.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • Cannot reset iPad with forgotten passcode

I have forgotten the restrictions Passcode but am unable to reset my iPad even though I have tried the usual suggestions.  I have the latest iOS version (8.0), i have backed up all my stuff, i have turned off Find My iPad, and I have done the turn it off/plug it into USB/hold Home key/connect to iTunes/click Restore process...BUT it seems to be hung up on the software verification part.  It shows the progress bar running as it "verifies" but it never gets past that.  I always end up with an error message.
I'm beyond frustrated at this point as all i want to do is reset it so i can start over without the passcode!!!  Hopefully someone has been in this situation before and got through it!!

At the very end of the kb article that explains what to do when you forget the passcode, it states the following .......
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
....... So in either case, you will not need to use the pascode, but you will be totally erasing the device, but since you do sync with iTunes, I assume that you have a backup from which you can restore the device and after doing that you can sync with iTunes to recover all of your media.

  • I have forgotten my iPad password, can't shut off find my iPad to restore it

I have forgotten my iPad password. I've tried to restore it thru iTunes but get a message saying i have to turn off find my iPad. which i can't do because i don't know the password. Help please.
    Thx

As stated in the support article, you can do this from any computer.
    Use Find My iPhone
If you enabled Find My iPhone, you can use it to erase your device.
Go to icloud.com/#find to see if you enabled Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices at the top of your browser window.
Select your device and click "Erase [device]" to erase your device and its passcode.
Use the Setup Assistant on your device to restore the most recent backup of your device.
    Use recovery mode
Follow these steps if you never synced your device with iTunes, if you don't have Find My iPhone set up, or if you can't get to your own computer. You'll need to put your device in recovery mode, which will erase the device and its passcode. Then you'llrestore your device as new or from a backup.
Disconnect all cables from your device.
    Turn off your device.
Press and hold the Home button. While holding the Home button, connect your device to iTunes. If your device doesn't turn on automatically, turn it on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode.
Click OK, then restore the device.

You will still need to connect it to a computer's iTunes to reset it, and you may need to put the iPad into recovery mode in order to be able to do so : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
If it's not a computer that it's been synced to then do you have a backup on iCloud that you could then restore from ? Depending upon what country that you are in, and whether the items are still in the store, you may be able to re-download some/all of your purchases via the Purchased tabs in the iTunes and App Store apps, and the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app.
