Catch virus/trojan via Acrobat Reader
Is it possible to catch is virus via Acrobat Reader? I was goggling the stuff on the internet and suddenly something installed in the tray of my computer and the Windows Defender panicked. I checked the internet cache, and only interesting file I can find is a PDF file([link deleted by host]). By glancing at the file in notepad, it is possible to notice there are JavaScript entries in it.
Is JavaScript by default configured to run unsafe content? I would prefer non-script-enabled Adobe Reader since most of computer comes with it pre-installed.
It's really real. I found the article on the worm Bloodhound.Exploit.288 ( http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-121511-4614-99 and http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/37331). I think it was run via iframe or redirect, and Adobe Reader's browser integration let run the bad stuff without even asking me.
The Javascript execution in the PDF document is enabled by default -- "good job" Adobe. And guess what: Linux is affected too. :-(
So my recommendation to all: go to preferences, turn off Javascript and remove any browser integration now. :-)

Embedding or replacing XMP values in PDF via Acrobat Reader
Hi,
I've been struggling with this.
We're building a form solution via Adobe X Professional
and then reader extending it to be able to submit the form
via Web Services
The specific behaviour being
- XFDF is being used to prepopulate a form
- Based on values in the XFDF - we're creating XMP metadata
and then trying to update the XMP metadata within the PDF
This works in Acrobat Professional, but is not working at all
in Acrobat Reader (even after Reader extending)
Looking through the Javascript guide, it appears the 'metadata' properly
has restrictions placed on it when it is being used in Reader
Are there any other options to do this within Reader only ?
- Some other API call ?
- Can somehow XFDF data pre-populated be used to drive population of the XMP metadata
Would appreciate any advise around this. I've posted a sample below to demonstrate the sort of thing we want to do in Reader
Regards,
Himanshu
------------ Example of what worked in Acrobat Pro, but not in Reader ------
var meta = this.metadata;
var myXMPData = new XML(meta);
myrdf = new Namespace("http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#");
myData = new Namespace("http://ns.abc/xyz/1.0/");
var p = myXMPData.myrdf::RDF.myrdf::Description;
p.@myData::Phone = "38922221";
myNewXMPStr=myXMPData.toXMLString();
this.metadata = myNewXMPStr;
My Product Information:
Reader 8.2.6, WindowsRead the documentation:
The property metadata is not allowed in Adobe Reader but is available in Acrobat Professional and Acrobat Standard. -
How do you create a watermark in a document via Acrobat Reader 9?
Have Acrobat Reader 9 but am unable to see how to incorporate a water mark on a document using Reader 9. Earlier versions had a section to select the watermark file from but I cannot locate such a section in Reader 9?
Any help most appreciated.Dave,
Thanks
Realised that late last night when we actually use a different product to create the watermarks.

My macbook pro has a virus/trojan that is resetting the EFI via apci and it is getting root access privileges. It seems to be creating multiple aliases that bundle with rogue apps and preferences so it is very difficult to control or fix. Please help..It all stems from the "about donwloads" PDF which kicks off the restructuring of the OS..
Well given the fact that it is not just myself who is infected and also that this is my 3rd macbook in 1 year because the other 2 efi's were compromised to the point where they were unusable, and also that I must've been to the mac store no less than 100 times in a year for these issues, I beg to differ. Here is what I can show you. This has been ongoing for over a year now.
I will try and show you as much as I can.
1) Here is what I see when I run mount from terminal:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
localhost:/4zOta2Q9FMiMnRjTROIbhU on /Volumes/MobileBackups (mtmfs, nosuid, read-only, nobrowse)
Why on earth is /Volumes/MobildBackups my localhost is beyond me. I don't use iCloud and Mobile me is obsolete.
2) Here is what I show when I run ls -al /*/*/*/*.efi from root
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 May 1 00:33 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 Oct 2 2012 /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 115716 Dec 13 14:08 /usr/standalone/i386/tmbootpicker.efi
As far as I know my boot.efi should not change everytime I boot my machine.
3) Here is something very interesting. When I run cd /dev followed by ls -al look what I have;

Deploy Acrobat Reader 10.1.3 via MSI Group Policy
The purpose of this thread is to identify EASIEST way to create/obtain an MSI file of the LATEST VERSION of Acrobat Reader (currently 10.1.3 as of 7/19/2012) to be deployed via GPO. I am not concerned with customizations of Reader settings as I have accomplished this already using Group Policy.
It sounds so easy, but I have found it to be quite frustrating and extremely time consuming to figure this out.
Here's what I have so far:
To download the full installer from Adobe, you must first apply on Adobe's website to distribute Reader:
http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/rdr_distribution1.html
Once you submit the request, a short time later you'll get an e-mail with a link to download the full exe file of reader 10.1.3.
Here's a link that explains how to extract an MSI from this exe:
http://blogs.adobe.com/dmcmahon/2010/06/16/how-to-extract-an-msi-file-from-the-exe-
for-adobe-reader/
Even with following those steps, I do not end up with an MSI file which will install 10.1.3.
To try another route:
There is also an Adobe FTP site. If you navigate down into the Reader 10.1.0 folder there is an MSI file. Good - but it's the old version.
You would think that if you navigate into the 10.1.3 folder there would be an MSI there as well.
Unfortunately there is not. However, there is an MSP file found in the misc folder:
I have tried several methods that are supposed to combine the MSP file with the MSI file - they have not worked.
I have also tried several methods of modifying MSI files, and using the Adobe Cusomization wizard downloadable here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4950
I am unable to end up with a deployable MSI file for Reader 10.1.3.
It's amazing that it's so complicated to deploy the latest version of Adobe Reader to my users.
Does anyone have a comprehensive answer to this simple problem? I do not want a link to a document with 20 pages explaining the theory of MSP files. I am looking for a concise, step by step method to obtain an MSI for 10.1.3 quickly and easily.
Thanks!First there isn't a single MSI file that will install Adobe Reader 10.1.3 available. There are two ways in which you can create an installer package that will install Adobe Reader 10.1.3.
1. Bootstrapper
- Bootstrapper uses the Setup.ini file to create a chained installation process and is run from Setup.exe with a limited amount of installation switches available.
The process is documented in the Enterprise Administration Guide: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf #page=77
Here is a reference video on the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zYTUyOIcNk
2. AIP (Administrative Installation Point)
- AIP uses the Windows Installer to create a decompressed updated full MSI based installer. The process is documented in the Enterprise Administration Guide: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf #page=70
Here is a reference video on the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05XOKX0150w&feature=relmfu
* Please note, that each installation method has it's advantages and disadvantages. Those aspects of each installation type need to be seriously considered for your specific environment and what will and will not work for the IT group and user groups within your enterprise before you decide upon one of them.

Talking to Internet Explorer embedded Acrobat Reader via COM
Hi all. I'm developing an Internet Explorer BHO (browser plugin) and was wondering whether it's possibly for me to communicate with Acrobat Reader via COM. I have read through the SDK docs and it's not clear whether this is possible. I'm using unmanaged c++.
I think if this can be done I think I will need to call get_document(IDispatch *p) on the webbrowser control, then using p->QueryInterface(...) to gain access to the Acrobat document. However, to do this I will need to pass in a REFIID to QueryInterface. As such I need to find some documentation on the supported COM interfaces and various IDs I will need to use.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.
thanks,
Zoltan!Thanks for your reply. We are writing a web annotation tool as an Internet Explorer plugin. The web annotation part of it is complete, and now we are looking at being able to make annotations on pdf documents loaded within the browser.
Where can I find information about the limited APIs on the ActiveX control you mentioned? Do you think we should be looking at a different approach?
thanks,
Zoltan -
I have downloaded acrobat reader but have documents that have been sent to me via email and I cannot
I cannot access documents sent to me via email which have been sent via Acrobat reader
Keep in mind you can only open PDF files (not just any document) in Reader.
Make sure up-to-date with the current version 11.2.1 (updates in the App Store).
Then read the Help file about Opening PDFs in Reader.

Acrobat Reader installed detection via JavaScript
I am curious whether or not Adobe plans on using AcroPDF.PDF.1 as an indicator of the most current version of Adobe Reader (for activeXObjects in Internet Explorer). I know that this will work for detecting whether Reader 7 is installed but now that I think about it, when Reader 8 comes out, if a user already has Reader 7 installed, obviously AcroPDF.PDF.1 will be defined in their registry so eval("new ActiveXObject('AcroPDF.PDF.1')") will return true. Does anyone know, Adobe specifically, how the next version of Reader will be classified in the ActiveX list (or registry key). Will it be AcroPDF.PDF.2?
The reason why I am asking is because I need to detect whether or not our clients have the latest version of Acrobat Reader installed for printing documents from our site. I apologize in advance if the following code looks really messy. This is my first post and I just pasted my code directly into the textarea box. Here's what my detection code looks like and works fine for now (but when Reader 8 comes out....hmmmm):
if(window.ActiveXObject) { // Internet Explorer var tryReader7 = true; for (var iVer = 20; iVer >= 0; iVer--) { try { if(tryReader7) { /********************************************* Check to see if Reader 7 is installed first. TRUE: Break out of loop FALSE: Set flag to false so that this check isn't executed each pass through by the loop *********************************************/ tryReader7 = false; // We only want to check ONCE var Reader7Exists = eval("new ActiveXObject('AcroPDF.PDF.1'); "); if(Reader7Exists) { // User met Adobe Reader Version Requirements oReader.installed = "True"; oReader.version = max_ReaderVerReq +".0"; oReader.message = aMessageStatus[4]; //"Adobe® Reader® installed" oReader.needsUpdate = 0; break; } } var ReaderExists = eval("new ActiveXObject('PDF.PdfCtrl." +iVer+ "'); "); if(ReaderExists) { // User met Adobe Reader Existence Requirements oReader.installed = "True"; oReader.version = iVer + ".0"; oReader.message = aMessageStatus[4]; //"Adobe® Reader® installed" break; } } catch(e) { // (minimum|maximum) version not detected oReader.message = aMessageStatus[7]; //"You do not have the latest Adobe® Reader® installed or enabled. } }I am trying with Reader 9.
I am not trying to print from the server. The printing will happen on the client computers that is why I am trying to print using javascript from an html page. My clients do have different versions of Reader from 6 to latest
Is there any way to achieve it with out installing anything else on the computers?
Thanks, -
Can't print via Adobe acrobat reader!
I can not print via Adobe Acrobat reader even though all other application work well with the printer and there is no hardware or connection problem involved.
the printer is: HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fn Color Multifunction Printer
The same thing happened to my outlook but I fixed it by reinstalling the printer software,
I think reinstallation is not the way of fixing it, does anyone have the same problem or can help me?Hello
I understand you can print from all other programs except Adobe acrobat reader.
I have included a document to troubleshoot this issue for not being able to print pdfs.
Check your version and select the appropriate one to proceed.

Chrome - Adobe-Acrobat/Reader can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser.
I can't view PDF files via Chrome (it works on Internet Explorer but I prefer Chrome) - the error below has arisen recently on Chrome, though I can't see what has changed.
"Acrobat plug-in
The Adobe-Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your Web Browser and try again."
I have looked through Forum articles on similar errors and have tried the following(text copied from other Forum entries)
Repair Adobe Acrobat (from Acrobat)
Repair Adobe Acrobat (from Control Panel
Configure Acrobat as a helper application: Choose Edit > Preferences., Select Internet on the left., Deselect Display PDF In Browser Using [Acrobat application], and then click OK.Quit Acrobat or Reader
Create a registry item for Acrobat: with Regedit: If the registry item doesn't exist on the system, do the following: Go to Edit > New > Key and create the missing HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe.Go to Edit > New > String Value and name this key (Default).Select (Default), and then go to Edit > Modify. Type the Adobe Acrobat path in the "Value data" for your product.,restart your computer
Repair the HKCR\AcroExch.Document registry key: Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document., Right-click AcroExch.Document and select Delete; make sure that you have the correct key, and click Yes on any prompts, Right-click AcroExch.Document.7 and select Delete; make sure that you have the correct key, and click Yes on any prompts. Repair your Acrobat installation
None has solved the problem. However it still works ok with IE. But I want to stick with Chrome because I find IE is so slow!
I am using Vista, with Adobe Acrobat standard 9.5.2 and Google Chrome version 23.0.1271.64 m which is marked on Chrome as 'up to date'
Does anyone know why I might be getting this error on Chrome but not IE?I think I have discovered the answer to my own question!
I have disabled Adobe Reader plug-in, and can now see PDFs in Chrome.
(Steps: Chrome Menu, Settings option, Click Advanced Settings link, then Content Settings button, then select Disable Individual Plug-Ins, and a list of plug-ins is offered to enable or disable).
I then get a different result depending on whether or not Chrome PDF viewer is enabled - with it enabled I see the PDF document in Chrome, or with it disabled then the option is offered to download it, but either way I can get it it via Chrome without having to run Internet explorer in another browser window. -
I ran a virus/trojan fix and this is what it said it could not repair something in the main library core or something like that. What do I do? The problem seems to be with safari?
I ran the utility disk and this is what it said.
Warning permission differ Applications/Safari drwxr-xrx they are -rwxr-xr system/livrary Cores has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permission apllication differ on System/livrary/Pr or could be -rw-r--r-- they are rwxr-xr-x Application/iTune be droxr-xr-x they are rwxr-xr-x
Then I hit fix permissions and it said this
Warning SUID file Systm/Library/Core has been modified will not be repaired
I also downloaded Bitdefender Virus Scanner and it found nothing. -
This is where you can see the form as clicked through to from the WordPress website page:
http://pinetreeplayers.com/ptp_new/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/submit-a-play.pdf
The PDF file was created in Acrobat 11, with a submit button. The submit button is actioned to send the form via email. It works perfectly by itself if the form is opened in Acrobat Reader, but once I upload the PDF to my WordPress site the submit button is greyed out, and will not complete the action to send on-click.
How can I fix this please - can anyone offer advice?Yes. They need to download Reader and then disable Google Chrome's internal PDF viewer and enable Adobe Reader.
FireFox should also be configured to use Adobe Reader and not the internal PDF viewer.
The internal viewers are created to process PDF documents by not including the features and code to process PDF forms. -
Acrobat Reader does not recognise my printer
Hello,
When I attempt to print a pdf document from adobe reader, my printer is not listed in the dropdown list of available printers. I am therefore unable to print anything. This issue only occurs with acrobat reader, all other windows applications recognise the printer and print fine. The printer is connected via wifi.
I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and the drivers, as well as acrobat reader. I have restarted my computer. The issue still persists.
My system information is as follows:
Windows 8 64 bit pc
Epson WF-7515 with the latest drivers
Acrobat reader version 11.0.0
Any solutions are much appreciated
RegardsI have the same problem. My Brother HL-1430 over USB connected to my Airport Express works perfectly. But via Time Capsule no way. I did all the deletion, re-install etc., but no success. I think the Time Capsule has still some problems to solve. What I did now:
I have connected my Airport Express via Ethernet (bridge mode) to my Time Capsule. I have my stereo and USB printer connected to Airport Express. My TC connects to the Internet. In addition I have an additional USB HD connected to TC for TC archiving and file sharing.
My MacBook connects to TC only. Now all works fine. I can use everything together at the same time (Internet, printing, music streaming, TimeMachine) without even having dropping bits when streaming sound in parallel.
Here I must say, that I would have long expected Apple to finally include Air Tunes into its base stations and TC. It's a bit of a joke that you still need to buy an additional Airport Express just to stream your music. Here marketing and product positioning at Apple goes too far and harms the concept of an easy and integrated solution. -
I'm told there is a virus associated with Adobe Reader. How can I tell if my machine is effected and if so what is the cure. I'm running OS X10.6.8 on an iMac with safari 5.1.5
There are no viruses currently affecting the Mac but there is something called Flashback which is malware that has been doing the rounds and affected many Mac users. Apple have released some updates to Java that should remove it and improve protection. Run Software Update to see if there is anything for downloading.
A few precautions that can help prevent your Mac becoming infected:
If you use Flash only download it directly from Adobe.
In all web browsers disable Java (but do leave Javascript on as that's something else).
In all web browsers make sure downloaded files aren't set to automatically open after downloading.
Consider disabling Java completely (launch Java Preferences in the Utilities folder and disable it - you'll likely rarely, if ever need it. If you do just turn it on and off again when your done).

Hi,
I have a user who successfully opened a .pdf attachment from outlook mail and then opened it in Acrobat Reader on the iPad and then edited it and moved it to a created folder.
Everything was working fine and the user highlighted text in the .pdf document too.
What then happened is when the user subsequently opened the file, the highlights were shown but not the content (text and pictures).
I checked they had the latest version via the apps store updates and noted there had recently been an update which had been applied.
I did check also in the diagnostics to see if there were any acrobat files, but there were none, I also turned on 'send diagnostics' in case this this will help in the future.
I rebooted the iPad by pressing and holding the power and home buttons until the apple logo appeared.
Checked again to see if I could view the .pdf content (it's around 8.5 MB file with 32 pages), still nothing showing apart from the yellow highlights that the user had done.
From within Acrobat Reader on the iPad I chose to open the file in iBooks to see if I could read it there. I could successfully open the file in iBooks and the front page thumbnail was showing (I did note that in Acrobat reader the thumbnail was white).
I found the email with attachment and opened it again in Acrobat Reader and it opens correctly, suggesting somehow the previous copy had become damaged? I have now saved this good copy over the top of the existing bad copy and all is OK except that the user has lost the highlights previously made.
Can you give me some idea of how this file has become broken in Acrobat Reader on the iPad and how I can avoid it happening again.
Many Thanks.Thanks for replying.
This is the first time it has happened, the user has several folders containing files (on their iPad), (some .pdf's with additional highlights) these files are typically company agm board packs so contain pages of text and photo's too.
I put it down the fact that when I checked the app store for updates there had recently been an update and the user had not rebooted their iPad for some time, hence some of the underlying adobe reader files were perhaps between versions.
I don't know how you handle files when performing an update, do you close the app, flush files from memory and do a clean update?
I can confirm that the .pdf file had not been sent as an email attachment after having added the highlights.
Because the acrobat document contains so many pictures (32 pages and 8.5MB) when scrolling through it takes several seconds for some pages to appear, and others with text and pictures quite a while for the text to become sharp, I presume this is because the Acrobat Reader cannot open the 8.5MB file in one go and has to keep swapping it out of memory. Having reached the end if I scroll back to the beginning it takes 10's of seconds before the first page re-appears, otherwise it's just a white page. Interestingly in iBooks the pages appear almost immediately when viewing.
The iPad in question is model MD368B/A, 64GB, Software Version 7.1.1 (11D201) and has 28GB Memory available. Usage tells me Adobe Reader is taking 328MB and is version 11.3.1
I have just finally browsed back to recent documents, opened 2 or 3 other documents and then this one again (from recent) and it is now broken, just shows white pages (and on the thumbnail too) with my test highlights. so I can now apparently reproduce it.
Hope this all helps you re-produce
