Categories search in Nokia Maps for WP8

After switching from my old Nokia N8 to a Lumia 920, one thing that disappointed me is the categories search functionality in Nokia Maps in WP8. On the Symbian device the categories were handily available close to the name search etc. On the Lumia I first have to search for the "Popular" places before I can even select a category. This is not the biggest issue though.
My problem is that it does not seem to have the same fine grained categories as in the Symbian version. For example finding only gas stations seems to be impossible. In fact I dont seem to be able to show gas stations at all, since they are not included in any of the categories.
Am I doing something wrong? Can I add categories somehow? Is this something that will be improved in the future?
I am using Nokia Maps version 3.1.177.8 on a Lumia 920
Thanks,
Jakob

Thanks for your reply.
If you read my question again you will notice that I already know how to find the categories. My issue is that the division into categories is far too coarse and it's impossible to choose one specific type of POI, for example gas stations.

If it is asking for internet connection, it wants to download the map. To stop this from happening download Nokia Map Loader here: http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download/nokia-map-loader Use Nokia Map Loader to upload maps to your phone, then there is no need to go on the internet the whole time.Don't click on the link. Copy it and paste in in the address bar of a new tab or window.

  • Nokia Maps for Australia - big flaws.

I have an N96 and I have to say, the Nokia Maps leaves a lot to be desired.
First of all, it can take a good 15-20 minutes before my phone will even get a satellite lock and tell me where I am.
The user interface in Maps 2.0 is as clear as mud. Nokia needs to go back to the drawing board on this one. Why it cannot take the same, easy process like a dedicated GPS unit I don't know. For a start, to enter a street number, you cannot press the # key to go into number mode, because that key is used for zooming in and out of the map. This defies everything else on the N96 in terms of user interface. I discovered you need to cycle through the letters until you reach the number.
For some reason, some streets that I KNOW EXIST, like Phillip Street in Sydney - one of Sydney's main streets - does not appear in the search when you look it up! It shows on the map, but you cannot find in the search. Ridiculous!
Also, the navigation is not at all smart. I was trying to get to Raglan Street, Balmoral NSW as I was coming out of the city. The navigation software made me turn left at Cremorne, turn left again, and left again, trying to get me to cross Military Road in a way that would have gotten me a ticket (or killed) had I obeyed. Useless. It wasn't even the most direct route either, as I discovered once I'd got to my destination.
Worse, was that the phone rebooted twice while I was trying to voice dial using my bluetooth headset. Not very helpful. Voice System Errors abound in this phone.
Furthermore, the integration between Maps and the phone functions are very poor. Since the voice dialling on the N96 is not good anyway, sometime you hear the bleep, sometimes you don't, so you have no idea when to speak and when the phone is listening, and if you can do all that without the phonc crashing (I'm using 11.101 firmware) then you're a better person than me.
Now, Nokia wants us to pay $130 per year for this rubbish. My advice is to forget using your phone for navigation. It's way too unreliable. Put the money towards a proper GPS unit and just keep the N96 Maps 2.0 for novelty purposes only. It really isn't worth it.

    Nokia: Connecting People... with iPhones.

The Nokia GPS receiver is low powered and hence not very sensitive. This is why there is an AGPS function which when activated will dramatically time to first fix. AGPS requires data connection to work.
If you press and hold any of the numerical keys on your keypad, it will go straight to the number. There is no need to cycle.
The search is a little funny at times. My tip is to keep the search vague, i.e. search for Phillip instead of Phillip Street. It may have something to do with the fact that Phillip street may be listed as Phillip St on the database.
There are a few navigation modes such as fastest, optimised, shortest. Try them out to pick the one that best suits you.
I use Voice Commands all the time. It is a little bit troublesome at the start while the phone learns your accent. It took me about a month before I could say I was happy. Nowadays it works about 99% of the time.
I use my phone sat nav as a backup to the unit I have in my BMW. I can't say that one is much better than the other. Both have their idiosyncrasies. The BMW unit leads me up the garden path as often as the Nokia. I do use the Nokia extensively when I travel abroad. The N96 was exemplary on my recent fly drive trip to spain.
I pay £200 twice a year for map updates for my BWW unit so I don't really complain about the Nokia charges because all the map updates are free.

  • At Argentina everyone is replacing Nokia Maps for ...

    Reason?
Most cities are very incomplete at Nokia Maps
As I could read at forums and confirm using Nokia Maps at a 6790, only work fine for Buenos Aires, while the direct rival (Garmin XT) has all roads and even several waypoints.
At my case, San Juan, Argentina, Nokia Maps only has a highway (and say A01 instead A014), and some routes

Well but also Garmin allow use of 3º party maps then I no use Navteq maps, here we use maps from Proyecto Mapear
    www.proyectomapear.com.ar
Would be great than Nokia also allow collaboration from users or give tools to comunity to draw and make maps for Nokia Maps

  • Search causes nokia maps to crash

    Howdy,
An oldie but a goodie here
Maps (v3.09) on a nokia C7 worked fine until  the last couple of weeks.
Startup and positioning are OK. When I try to search for a destination though,
    the application crashes. Repeatedly.
I can't think of anything I did lately (settings changes or new installs) that might have caused this.
On the older threads regarding this issue, the best solution seemed to be updating the suite. Mine is updated.
    Ideas?
    Thanks!

Have you tried disabling all but GPS, i.e. disable internet connection of any kind? On my phone (n79 using maps v3.0.1), maps will consistently quit if I try to navigate while connected to WIFI. I realize you are having the problem with search rather than navigation. But perhaps it's worth a try.

  • According to nokia maps , half my city is on water

i'm using a 6110 navigator with the latest nokia maps for navigation around Alexandria, Egypt. according to nokia maps a great part of the city, although showing streets and names is on water. in other words the map design shows blue water underneath a great part of the city's costal line with streets and complete blocks of buildings shown to exist on water.
this disturbing visual problem exist in the newest egypt map "8.1 Mb". has anyone else noticed this???
Fear not those who argue but those who dodge

I sent my N97 (RM-507) off to the NokiaUSA care center a few weeks ago for the GPS antenna shielding fix.
This past week I updated to v20 firmware, did a hard reset and reinstalled all applications from scratch, including the Maps for the USA.
    I'm running Nokia Maps 3.01 09wk30 b02
    and Maps data version 0.1.22.103
Testing the GPS this morning....outside, no obstructions, clear blue sky....I get 5-9 green bars on the satellite fix, but my position keeps jumping around (including the altitude per Locations) and is 30-40 yards EAST of my actual position relative to the map background.
Using the Search function to locate my actual numeric address, the Maps application puts that about 30-40 yards WEST of the background indication based on the map background.
Thus the total map accuracy is 60-80 yards off EAST/WEST in terms of displayed position versus numerical address!!!
For comparison, I ran a test using Google Maps and allowed it to use the N97's GPS.  Not surprising, it located my position quickly and accurately within about 8-10 yards, though it did continuing moving a bit but never more than about 2-3 yards at a time.
I am running out of patience with Nokia.  The N97 has been out since July 2009 and their Maps software and GPS drivers are probably the worst that I've ever seen in terms of accuracy and stability.
I hear of others using Garmin software on their N97, but until I'm certain beyond a shadow-of-a-doubt that the N97's GPS hardware is stable, accurate and dependable I really don't want to spend the extra money for a 3rd party program and I definitely won't be spending any money on Nokia Map navigation license.

  • Nokia Maps is a giant step backwards

My relevant background - I live in Los Angeles, owned an HTC HD7S for more than a year and just recently got a Lumia 920. I like everything about my new 920 except vibration noise, and this horrid Nokia Maps app which is forced on us...
    Problems with Nokia Maps:
Lack of integration with the rest of the operating system.
Nokia maps is an island to itself. I click an address from a people hub contact, it opens Windows Phone Maps, not Nokia Maps. I click an address from a Bing search which has a dedicated hardware button, and it opens Windows Phone Maps, not Nokia Maps. I click an address in an email, you guessed it, it opens Windows Phone maps.
Searching in Nokia Maps has terrible results
I tried 3 searches today during the course of my day using Nokia Maps. Si Laa is a Thai restaurant I wanted to try a few miles from my house with an obviously unique name. The results I get are for Joyce Cafe, something in Germany and Slovenia. Next I try UPS in hopes it will find the company owned UPS Customer Center a quarter mile from my house. It doesn't find it at all, but does find alot of ups stores that are further away. Nokia Maps choked on another restaurant in Beverly Hills I tried to find. My wife's iPhone 4s had no problems with any of these.
Local surface street traffic info is missing
On the Lumia 920, I don't get any surface street traffic info. I do see traffic info for highways and freeways. I used to get local surface street traffic on my old HD7S Windows Map. Windows Phone Maps shows some sporadic street traffic data but is not quite right either. I called Nokia about it, the level 1 techie tells me I'm supposed to have local street traffic but has no further explanation and has escalated to level 2...
Nokia removed the Windows Phone Maps.
As shown in the first point above, Windows maps is still clearly on the phone, but Nokia removed the tile for it from the app list. There doesn't seem to be a way to directly open Windows maps. This would be fine except that Nokia maps, which is supposed to be the replacement, is worse than Windows Phone maps in so many ways.
There isn't a single reason to use Nokia Maps over Windows Phone Maps.
The only reason I use it is because Nokia has seen fit to make Windows Phone Maps hard to start by removing it from the apps list.
Nokia should leave both map apps available and in the apps list.
If Nokia Maps is the superior product, people will use it. Right now I'd say Windows Phone maps is superior in every way and that's a shame for Nokia who is supposed to be a mapping leader...

Hi - Do you have latest versions? As mine works fine see below.

  • Nokia Maps - is it now almost useless ?

Over the recent years I've owned various Nokias. A N95, a N95 8gb, a N96 and now a 5800. Throughout all these Nokias I've used Nokia Maps. I felt a compulsion to try and see how competent their navigation software was. I also at the same time tried Navigon and TomTom, often because the Nokia Maps application could not be trusted.
I first noticed with the 5800 that postcode searches were now reduced to 4 characters ie PR3 4GH now returns PR3 4 - this inacuracy could be about 1/2 a mile from where you need to be. On all my other Nokias using Nokia Maps the postcode search searched on the full postcode.
I wrote to Nokia and was first informed that the postcode search had always been truncated (it had not) and my second email received the reply that Nokia now only returned the first four characters of the postcode search.
From my experience and by way of a comparison TomTom and Navigon both return full postcodes when searched.
Like a lot of others I have paid for drive and walk for the UK and also traffic subscription. Now as I have to enter the full details of where I want to go I feel that navigation is now rather pointless - you need to know exactly where you are going before entering the details into Nokia Maps - to be shown where to go.
If Nokia now only do offer truncated postcode searches and have no plans to do differently I would strongly advise owners of Nokias with Nokia Maps to not purchase the drive and walk option.
I am very dissapointed that Nokia have taken this approach to Nokia Maps, their maps are provided by Teleatlas and only recently they aquired GMBH (?) to strengthen their navigation arm. Also they are developing Nokia Maps 3 - why bother Nokia - it's an inacurate, unreliable piece of software.
I'm posting this also on the All About Symbian thread - I feel strongly about this - I want Nokia to take note and reverse their decision.
Come on Nokia - offer full postcode searches on Nokia Maps - you know it makes sense !
    Any thoughts anyone ?

    Hi chazzle
You raise some interesting issues here although from a global perspective the UK is fairly unique in having such a detailed postcode (zipcode) database because it is so densely populated in areas. I might add that I also use Tomtom Navigator 6 with it's UK postcode zip file, although as you are well aware mapping is now unfortunately rather out of date. Since Nokia Maps v2.0 mapping has been provided by Navteq acquisition although TeleAtlas provided for Smart2go > Nokia Maps v1.0. You would be very disappointed by present UK coverage in Nokia Maps v3.0Beta in rural areas if you gave it a go.
As Ford of Europe has chosen Navtek for provision of Bluetooth Mobile Navigation it will be interesting to see how this develops in this regard:
    http://www.gpsbusinessnews.com/Ford-innovates-with-hybrid-phone-in-dash-navigation-system_a1247.html
Whilst I can accept that you feel aggrieved by this deficiency the direction now seems to be more of developing location based social network applications and as far as Nokia's growth in say China and India is concerned ownership of a car will for many remain out of reach or purpose.

  • Nokia maps s40 (c3-01//c2-03//asha 300)

Hi there, Where can I download nokia maps for these devices? (euro maps) C2-03 has nokia maps, so it should be available in some ways, right?
DO NOT link me this http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/maps-support/compatibility-and-download because these phones are not listed.
    Thank you

    Hi Enneotto8,
As far as I can tell, Nokia C3-01 does not support Nokia Maps. If Maps download is not made available to you through Nokia Suite, then I'm sure that your device does not support Nokia Maps. The C3-01 also does not have a GPS receiver as part of the phone hardware, and reviews of the phone I have read on the Internet, do not make mention of any Maps functionalities. Yes, it would be convenient even to have an offline version of Maps, but sadly I doubt this is available.
    Hope this helps.
