Category Search, Week View, To Do's

For my needs, the iPhone software must have: 1) a week-view in the calender (month view doesn't give enough information, day view doesn't let me scan ahead).
2) A contact search function that will look for addresses and comments as well as just names (say I need to find a favorite restaurant in LA having forgotten the name).
3) To do's.
These three are available in all decent organizer software (eg. Palm). Are they coming to the iPhone, either from Apple or 3rd parties????

Tommm, I agree. I have switched from Palm Treo 680 to iPhone half a year ago and since then I am asking the exact same questions.
Even Phil Schiller said very clearly in his WWDC 2008 appearance that *week view* was his favorite view!
As for the missing task app, I have listed a few alternatives here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1560480&tstart=0
All of them require Software 2.0 and the AppStore (except for MobileToDoList ).
Meanwhile, it's certainly a good idea to send a feedback to Apple.

• Category search

Hi!
With our webapplication Tool for ContentServices the user should be able to search for documents with categories and category values.
Everything works fine, except one case:
I assigned one category several times to one document and changed the values for every category-item. Now they look like that:
HasenCategory (1)
maxSprungweite = 6,76
Möhrenvorrat = 255
HasenCategory (2)
maxSprungweite = 4
Möhrenvorrat = 130
HasenCategory (3)
maxSprungweite = 1
Möhrenvorrat = (empty)
Then I tried to search for this document with the SearchManager form the ContentServices API by creating a search expression that looks like that:
SearchExpression:
leftOperand
leftOperand = "Name"
operator = "Equal"
rightOperand
leftOperand
leftOperand = [...] (HasenCategory - Möhrenvorrat)
operator = "Equal"
rightOperand = "255"
operator = "AND"
rightOperand
leftOperand = [...] (HasenCategory - Möhrenvorrat)
operator = "Equal"
rightOperand = "130"
So I expected to get back this document because it has got a HasenCategory where the attribute value for the attribute Möhrenvorrat is 255 and the document also has got a HasenCategory where the attribute value for Möhrenvorrat is 130, but that doesn't succeed. I got back an empty searchresult.
Does anybody know how to construct a search expression that brings back the result I expected? Is it even possible to construct such a search expression for the SearchManager or doesn't it support such a search?
Thanks for every reply

• Calendar stuck in weekly view

The calendar on my iPhone 4 is stuck in weekly view. I can not get it to bring up the menu to switch to monthly.

At the top of the calendar there is supposed to be a set of tabs for view: day, list, month, year. On my phone, it is stuck in a year view with no tabs at the top.
In IOS7 the interface has changed, the year view do not have any tabs on top except Search (lupe icon) and a plus sign ( + ) on the right. If you hold the iPhone in Landscape mode (horizontally) you get a week's view.

• Any calendar app with landscape week view?

Before I waste more hours searching, I thought I'd ask here:
Is there ANY basically reliable stand-alone calendar app for the Touch that will do a landscape-oriented week-view?
Or any clue that in the next six months someone at Apple will sit down for a couple of hours, figure out how to make the native calendar program do this, and issue an update?
I don't necessarily need it to sync to anything, since I'm used to using a paper planner. I'm not going to buy a program for my desktop just to get the Touch calendar.
I teach college and do a lot of random meetings and appointments with people on the fly, in the "can we meet in the next few days" genre. On paper, I'm scanning my Week View all the time, and I'm just flabbergasted that that's the one thing I can't get the iPod software to do for me.
The list-based portrait weekly view in something like PI-Lite will just barely suffice.
Any suggestions?

• Week view calendar = fail

I was very happy when I heard IOS5 was going to include a week view. Now I've seen how its been done I wonder why Apple bothered.
I expected to be able to see the whole week's calendar in both vertical or horizontal orientation as you can on an iPad, Blackberry, Nokia, Palm or pretty much any other smart phone. Just scale the iPad view down and I'll be happy. I don't need to be able to read all the text, I'm more interested in being able to see when I'm busy and when I'm free for the whole week. The tap for details concept used in month view would be fine.
Instead we get a 1/2 week view that works only when the phone is held sideways and needs scrolling to see more days. This is not week view at all, and is pretty hopeless IMHO.
Proper week view is the most convenient way of negotiating an appointment time with a client. e.g. I'm available Mon am, Wed pm, all day Friday and Sunday from 2pm. You should not have to scroll. Mon - Sun should be visible on 1 screen.
Please do it properly Apple!

After searching elsewhere I found an app called "week calendar" which is pretty good... maybe Apple should licence it...

• Start day for global agenda week view

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the first day of the week for the global agenda week view? For example, instead of having the week start on Monday, it starts on Sunday.

Hi Christopher,
The WEEKDAY function allows specifying either Sunday or Monday as the first day of the week:
WEEKDAY
The WEEKDAY function returns a number that is the day of the week for a given date. WEEKDAY(date, first-day)
date: The date the function should use. date is a date/time value. The time portion is ignored by this function.
first-day: An optional value that specifies how days are numbered.
Sunday is 1 (1 or omitted): Sunday is the first day (day 1) of the week and Saturday is day 7.
Monday is 1 (2): Monday is the first day (day 1) of the week and Sunday is day 7. Monday is 0 (3): Monday is the first day (day 0) of the week and Sunday is day 6.
But I think you are referring to the first day of the 'workweek', for which I do not see a means of defining a custom value.
Since you want to 'insert categories', though, you could easily define your own, using WEEKDAY(date) or WEEKDAY(date,1), plus an IF statement to return the category label appropriate to the day. Here's one for a Sunday to Thursday work week. Dates are in column A, the formula is in whichever column you want as the Category column. For the example, I've placed it in column B.
B2, and filled down: =IF(WEEKDAY(A)<6,"Work","Off")
The top table shows the weekday numbers returned for each day of the week for each of the three permitted values for the optional second argument. The bottom table shows the results from the formula above, used to define a category label for each date:
A10 was left blank intentionally, to determine if the lack of data resulted in an error. The Warning message, flagged by the blue 'warning' triangle, is "The formula uses a number in place of a date." The 'date' assigned to this numerical value of zero was a Friday, but I'm not certain when. Probably best to avoid extra rows with no date shown.
Regards,
Barry

• Clicking on Year view to get Week view in iCal

In the Lion version, is there any way I can double click a date and get to the 'week view' rather than the 'day view'?

CaptainStarwars,
Try using (⌘+C) and then (⌘+V). That action retains the event in the original, while also placing a duplicate in the new location.
If you want to remove the event from the original time, use (⌘+X), then (⌘+V) in the new time frame.
;~)

• Weekly view in iCal.

In iCal you can se what month and what date it is but not what week. You can look in weekly view but it dosen't say the number of the week.
Example: Im a student and goes out on field study week 49. I want to be able to post in iCal all that week that im going on field study. When I look in monthly view I could se "ahh, week 48 normal study and week 49 field study".
To put it simply just ad the week numbers to each week in iCal.
This problem also regards to iPhone.

Good find Kristian!
Perhaps this is a more region specific usage?
I was born and raised in the U.S. and neither at University nor in business have I ever had someone use a week number / day number within the calendar year as a point of reference. This could also be the fields in which I've worked (HealthCare (US Calendar), Accounting (Fiscal Calendar), IT (Corporate Fiscal Calendar)). Perhaps in other countries or professions this is more common? Or maybe it's just me
If this is a feature that you would like to see added to iCal consider submitting feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ical.html
Cheers.

• Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?

Hi, Im not a frequent forum poster, as most of my questions can be found already answered on them!
This is a question Ive had for a long time and it amazes me that no-one else seems to ask it. I check at each OS upgrade but its never there...
Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?
I was able to do this years ago in MS Outlook, and utilized it all the time when I needed to push things back, now I have to open the event and select an new date in the drop-down calendar for each & every event I want to move to a new month at the end of the month.
If its definitely not possible, how to you ask apple to consider including it - it doesnt seem like a particularly difficult task.
Thankyou
Andrew.

Andrew,
Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?
No, but you can use cut/paste. Cut (⌘X) the event, then click on the week where you want to move the event, and Paste (⌘V).
If you have a suggestion for Apple to change that method use: Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback.

• Bug in iCal weekly view

The weekly view in the default Calendar app on my ipad shows events ONE DAY BEHIND the correct date of the event. For example if I create an "all day" event for Friday 23rd July it will appear correctly on the 23rd in ALL VIEWS EXCEPT THE WEEKLY VIEW where it displays on the 22nd? This is happening with all entries. I have tried deleting & recreating the event and have tried re-boots etc., but the problem remains. Can someone help?

You can disable the context highlighting if you find that distracting. In this case it should make noticing that something is wrong more easily though. A link starts with a quote and ends with a quote and everything between the two is considered the link. If the second quote is omitted then it is the choice of the developer on how to deal with it. Either not to interpret the text in between (you may even have forgotten to HTML escape some characters "e; <) or try to catch up in case you forgot a closing quote. Both can have their disadvantages in case of an error from you.

• View iCal's day and week view in reverse chronological order

Greetings iCalers,
When I think about day/week calendars, with the Y-axis being times of the day as in iCal's day/week views (e.g. "3:00 AM", and "5:00 PM" are in the leftmost column), I think about times building up to midnight from the bottom—i.e. the day starts at 12:00 AM on the bottom, with 1:00 AM above that, and the day ends with 11:59 PM on the top. I've learned that this intuition is atypical, and all calendaring systems I've come across work in the reverse direction, in line with the majority of people's intuitions.
I'm wondering if there's a way to get iCal to display in the reverse-chronological order. I suspect there isn't, and I've never seen a terminal command or apple script for it, but I'm hoping there is. If anyone know and could post it here, that would be great!
Thanks!

It's cool, I figured out a solution: get over it and stop worrying about trivial issues to the point of excessive fussiness.

• Multiple All Day Events Missing in Week View

Hello,
I just got my first BB a Curve 8900 and am very impressed.
The only thing I don't like is that if I have more than one all day event on a particular day, in Week View I can't see them.
(I've used a variety of other phones/PDAs over the years and this is not normally an issue)
I've googled this and haven't found much relating to it, other than people not seeing all day events on the home screen or something.
Is this a BB 'feature'? Is there a work around?
I'd like to be able to see my week ahead at a glance and don't seem to be able to.
Thanks in advance.

Hello RobertBL,
I have the same problem. In week view i only see 1 event on days with multiple day events. I use firmware version 4.6.1.152 (platform 4.2.0.91). My Curve 8900 is T-Mobile branded (Netherlands). Until now i haven't found a work around. In other calendars (pocket informant and Agendus) i don't have this problem in weekview, so it must be a BB firmware bug.
Greatings

• Calendar Week View

I've got a calendar, and I can view it as a week. But what I want to do, is have Calendar Web part that displays the week, as a list by day, instead of a Calendar view that displays times and days for the week.
What I want it to look like is something like this:
Activity 1       4/17/2015
Activity 2        4/20/2015
activity 3       4/20/2015
activity 4        4/21/2015
Basically everything that is viewable in the Week view but in a list. Kind of a Week at a glance.
Thanx for your Help.
RHM

Hi,
The following steps for your reference:
1. Create a calculated field called WeekEnd output as a date/time in Calendar.
=[Start Time]+(7-WEEKDAY([Start Time])) - that gave me a Sunday date.
2. Create a new view named WeekView and set filter as below:
[WeekEnd] is greater than or equal to [Today]+1 AND
[WeekEnd] is less than or equal to [Today]+7
Then we can see the Calendar web part display as below:
If the method not meet your requirement, we can also customize a visual web part to achieve it.
Best Regards

• Anyone know how I can print a two page weekly view from ical

Hi there.
I'm trying to print (from my ical) a weekly view into a Franklin planner page. i would like to print a week into two (side by side) 5x8 pages. Anyone have any idea? Can the iplanner app do this?
Thanks!

After playing with the settings, it doesn't look like that's possible.
My thought is that you could try the 8x10 size and cut it in half. But since you probably don't have 8x10 paper lying around, you could try doing it as a PDF.
Try this: (Mac OSX Leopard only)
Set up your print options in iCal, choose the 8x10 paper size, and press "Continue." Then, instead of choosing "Print," click "PDF" and "Open PDF in Preview."
From here, you could print it on regular letter size, and trim it down for your book. Or photocopy it onto your 5x8 paper.
I know that's not ideal, but you know, it's an option.
