Cats and macs dont mix

I made the mistake of getting up from my computer to go make a cup of tea, and I came back to find my cat sprawled across the keyboard. Normally, he doesn't do any damage, but today I found something wrong with my computer screen. Basically, it seems as if a sepia filter has put on my screen. Im not exactly sure if its called sepia, but its like if you screw around with a picture in photoshop, and you can put a setting on it that makes it look eerie and ghost-like. The colors are distorted, i.e. anything that was blue is now orange, anything that was orange is now blue, green is purple and whatnot, and everything else has an eerie white sheen. I have been on system preferences for over an hour trying to figure out what he could have done, but I have not come up with any solutions, and am now desperate. Any advice would be much appreciated.

It's called inverse colors, I actually had my computer set like that for a year when I was a kid because I thought it was cool. In System Preferences it is located under Universal Access on the Seeing tab at the bottom under Display. There you can select Black on White or White on Black, Grayscale, and adjust contrast, also displays the hot key. ⌃⌥⌘8 is the default hot key, I think I have mine set to ⌃⌥⌘, which you can change and turn off under Keyboard in System Preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts tab and select Universal Access in the list.

  • HPG60 and WoW dont mix :S

Hi, i have a hpG60 notebook that runs WoW but after around an hour decides to shut down because it overheats. Last time I checked on speedfan with both WoW and a chrome browser running the temperature was around 108 degrees celsius at a max (both GPU and CPU).
As of late the fan wont start on boot up and as a result now, after around ten minutes the laptop will overheat and shut down. I know this can easily be fixed and it's currently being repaired. But is there anything I can do to avoid these annoying random shutdowns whilst i'm using the laptop.. I do though recognise when it's about to shut down since the frame rate drops loads on WoW. Is this because of the fan being clogged up or just because HP is notorious for having high temperatures.
I've already had the hard drive replaced under warranty (Just about.. bought it last christmas and had it repaired this january) so should I just bite the bullet and buy another laptop, or face up to the possibility PC World will persuade me into buying a new fan (that comes under the hefty £229.99 bill) and face even more problems.

108 degrees celsius is far too hot, and will damage the motherboard/graphics/cpu very quickly, when gaming 80 degrees celsius max should be the temp anything hotter and you are damaging your laptop, harddrive temp should be maxium 50 degrees celsius anything more and you will damage it, hp's don't have the best cooling as hp cuts corners with the cooling they use alumium instead of copper etc, you can do a couple of things to make the laptop run cooler, keep the fan clean and buy a laptop cooling pad.

  • My iPad and Mac aren't synching.  It used to automatically with iCloud.

My iPad and Mac dont seem to be synching with iCloud.  Also, when I connected the iPad via the USB it stayed on Step 2 of the synching process and never got past there.

I found the answer... to disable "Find my iPad" first before trying to delete the iCloud account, and the password was accepted. When I tried deleting the iCloud account before disabling "Find my iPad", the password wasn´t accepted.

The software that comes with your refurbished Mini should be identical to that which comes with a new Mini. Disk Utility should be in Applications > Utilities. Alternatively, choosing Utilities from the Go menu at the top of the finder windownwill take you directly to the Utilities folder.

  • How to sync 2 different Mac users using the same Apple ID and with out mixing each other info?

How to sync 2 different Mac users using the same Apple ID and with out mixing each other info?
We are two people using three difrent Macs, 1 Iphone and 1 Ipad with separate USERS  on each Mac but sharing the same Apple ID: xxxxxx
I set up the first user to iCloud and it was OK but when I set up the second user to use iCoud the first users's info gets mixed with the second user's info?
Do we have to set up a diffrent Apple ID for each other?
Sometime ago I added my friends E mail (yyyyy) to the main Apple ID (xxxx) as for using his E mail account (to separate our e mail accounts, and it's working ok) but now when I try to create a new apple ID whith the same friend's e mail (yyyyyy)  it says that his mail (yyyyy) is already an apple ID when the Apple ID is really my E mail (xxxxx)... any clue?
    Thanks

I believe because you migrated from a Nokia to an iPhone you need to register the Bn phone number with your Apple ID so it can be used for iMessage. The Pn number seems to be the only one registered
    Go here > https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
Manage your Apple ID and see if that does the trick
    Hope that helps

how do i set up my kindle to receive audio books? Is there a MAC filter? it must be disabled and I dont know how to do this

By default, any type of MAC filtering is disabled on the AirPort base stations ... unless, of course, you or someone else enabled it.
If it is enabled, to disable it, you would use the AirPort Utility.
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > AirPort > Access Control tab > MAC Address Access Control: Not Enabled

  • Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

Yes, but you might want to think carefully about it.
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

  • I am due to upgrade my iPhone 3 to iPhone 5. I have icloud which co-ordinates my phone and mac what happens when I get a new phone - I dont want to lose all my contacts, notes, addresses etc. Do I have to disconnect icloud and how? What happens?

I am due to upgrade my iphone 3 to iphone 5.  I have icloud which is co-ordinating my iphone 3 and Mac Pro updating each other.  What happens when I get a new phone - I dont want to lose all my addresses, notes etc.  What is the procedure and step by step action?  The new phone arrives - then what?

When I upgraded from the iPhone 3GS to iPhone 5, I simply did a Backup of my phone using iTunes, plugged in the new iPhone 5 into my Mac, and did a Restore of that backup to put everything back. This procedure is documented around the web. Also, the new phone will ask you for your Apple ID and when you enter it, all your iCloud info will be downloaded to the phone. It worked pretty well for me.

you still have the option (before your warranty expires) of purchasing an AppleCare Protection Plan, which will provide an additional two years of coverage. Once your warranty expires, you will no longer have the option of purchasing AppleCare.

  • HT201260 Hi, I from Venezuela and i dont know how to download java to my MAC OS X and I want to see movies. PLEASE HELP

Hello! I need some help to download JAVA

Java is generally not a standard for seeing movies.
Also 10.5.8 Java is obsolete, and won't be updated.   You need a minimum of Mac OS X 10.7.3 to really get full Java support.  You can only update to 10.7.3 if you have an Intel Core2Duo with 2 GB of RAM or more.
Intel CoreSolo and Intel CoreDuo are NOT compatible.
Edit: If you do have a compatible machine with 10.7.3, here are other considerations before upgrading:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
What website requires Java to see movies?  Netflix uses Silverlight and Mac OS X 10.5.7 or higher.
Others just use plain Quicktime or Realplayer.  You can also install some 32 bit versions of Windows 7 on your Mac if all you have is a CoreSolo or CoreDuo using some of the virtualization tools here, which might also support the video formats you are talking about:
