Caught in failing lion server installation loop
Hi,
I tried upgrading my Mac mini server (2010) from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server. Midway through the installation the process is aborted with the error message "a recovery system can't be created, press restart to return to your previous system installation". The problem is, upon restart it does not boot into the previous system, but instead the Lion installation process starts again and fails with the same "a recovery system can't be created" message. I am caught in a loop.
How can I restore my previous working Snow Leopard System?
Regards,
Sascha
Well, it is possible that the Snow Leopard system is still in place. But for the reason for the error. I am guessing your original server is running on a mirrored RAID. If so, then the recovery volume can not be created. This is a limitation of the corestorage tech and how full disk encryption and dynamic repartitioning work.
Try this. When the unit reboots, hold down the option key on a connected keyboard. When you do so, this will bring you into the boot select window. See if you SL volume is still present.
If not, you did remember to snap a backup of the server before you started, right?

Lion Server installer says I am not connected to the internet
I cannot install Lion Server because it keep saying I am not connected to the internet despite the fact that I am. How can I solve this?
+1 same issue for me too.
I have a wireless connection though, wondering if it is a wired connection that is being asked for here? -
Lion server installer does not finish
I installed Lion Server from the App store, and it says that it installed successfully, but when I click the Finish button, nothing happens. About This Mac shows Lion 10.7.2, not Lion Server 10.7.2.
Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Thomas HartAt this point the problem seems to be that the DNS records are bollixed up. I have my domain name server through Zoneedit, and their servers are showing my IP address as 24.xxx.xx.xxx, which is correct. When I do lookup for tehart.net I get an address of 73.xx.xxx.xxx, which is wrong. The lookup for www.tehart.net shows this:
www.tehart.net.

SOA
www.tehart.net. admin.www.tehart.net. 2011122701 86400 3600 604800 10800

www.tehart.net.
www.tehart.net.

The forwarded address should be 10.0.1.4. I've got no idea how to fix this, and the Apple instructions insist on modifying DNS records, without supplying decent examples of how they should look.
I don't know if this is causing the problem, but if you've got any idea, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

I have lost all my user account after Lion Server Installation. This is on a Mac Mini Server
I did all software update before migrate to Lion and Lion Server. But surprise! No more users account? I thought that a migration should take care off user accounts? Is there anything I should do to get my user accounts, an all related thong like email accounts?
not sure if it works the same for server - but this has helped a lot of folks (me included)

Lion Server Installation dosen't work
Important server components can not be installed because it is currently on the software update server is not available.
Can help someone ?I had a similar probem when I changed my computer name. Apple gave me the command to reset Apache web server to original settings and that took care of the problem for me. Here is the URL to the admin page with the command:
https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/10.7/#apd163efc3a-1465-4a44-ad2d- c76094144512
However, you should be sure to use the home SSL certificate when you move the office computer if you haven't already done so. I changed my IP range when I installed a new router and my wiki quit working after the reset. I reset apache and then found my ssl certificate wasn't set for web functions (I don't know why that happened). I reset that and Wkik worked fine, but I don't know which action, or both, was the solution this time. -

It seems to me like you have
1. Previous failed instance of SQL Server installation which subsequently caused further SQL Server installations to fail
2. The windows account with which you logged into machine to install SQL Server is corrupt
You can, If possible create a new windows account give it admin privileges and then log into machine using this account
After you login follow below method to remove failed SQL Server installation
Uninstall
Uninstall SQL Server completely from add remove program. Make sure no previous failed installation fragments are present on your system. Please use this
link for uninstalling existing instance of SQL Server
. If you have SQL Server 2005
use this link .
If you are unable to uninstall SQL Server completely because you deleted SQL Server files and un-installation is giving error please follow below method. This method is tested and suggested on
this thread and
Forum .
Below Solution (about removing reg keys) will work correctly for SQL Server having Just one instance.
If you have multiple instances and you have messed up SQL Server installation please contact Microsoft Support personal to get better guidance on removal of SQL Server. Please DONT use this method if you are new to SQL Server take help of experienced
DBA to locate proper registry keys and remove them if you are not confident at all it would be better calling Microsoft Support.
Note: Removing necessary registry entries might cause SQL Server instance to crash so backup registry before doing changes.
1. Uninstall the existing SQL Server and all the components from the add remove program.
2.
Backup the registry .
3. Delete the following keys using regedit:
--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.
6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer.
7. Reboot the machine.

Create a bootable Mountain Lion OS X Server installer ?
With Lion and Lion Server it was possible to create a Lion Server installer just bij adding a ServerVersion.plist file in the folder CoreServices.
Adding that enabled the normally greyed-out 'Customize'-button that installed the Server.app and ServerEssentails.pkg (nevertheless an internet connection was still required).
I don't go in details here too much but is a similar procedure possible for Mountain Lion ? To install OS X Server in one row ?Not that I am aware of. If you find a way please disclose.
I fear that this is no longer possible and the reason I say this is that we have already gotten a few BTO mini Servers arriving with Mountain Lion + Server.app installed. However, if you erase the drive and perform and Internet restore you no longer get Mountain Lion + Server.app installed. You get Mountain Lion and then need to go to the App Store, associate the device with an Apple ID which grants you access to Server.app for download. -
Lion Server install failed - yet still labelled as installed in MAS
On my lion test machine, I decided to test Lion Server, so I of course got the redemption code, popped it all in. When the actual "download" started - it instantly said it was complete - I never saw the download icon in the dock for it. Under MAS Purchases tab, I see Lion Server as "installed" - but of course, there is no way it could be, especially not without a reboot.
I rebooted. Still only Lion Client.
I've tried pkgutil --forgetpkg com.apple.Server, but its still listed as "installed" in MAS. I don't see anything /Applications, or / that could be a "Lion Server Installer".
Any ideas how to flip the "install" switch, so I can try re-installing in MAS?Please use your Developer account login at the confidential Mac Dev forums when discussing unreleased versions of OS X, thanks.

Mountain lion server won't take my password for install
I have never run a server version of apple software. I am wanting web sharing to host a small website. This option was removed from sharing preferences in mountain lion.
I purchased server to avoid the need to use the command line interface. It was requiring a password and I don't use a password on my system and it wouldn't take a null. I am finding a similar problem with attempting to install server on mountain lion.
When I run the mountain lion server installer it prompts for an administrator password. I hit return as I set up the system without an administrator password. This fails, but works with all other admin password requests for software installation.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
David FinellI just decided to setup passwords. I just wanted to avoid the pain. It worked. Now to figure out how to share folders over the web in server.

Lion Server fetchmailconfig Error
Hello
I have a Problem with the Lion Server. There is the same Problem on each Lion Server installation.
When I start fetchmailconfig on Lion Server I become an error messages.
Error:
/usr/bin/python: can't open file '/fetchmailconf.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
On Mac OS X Snow Leo Server fetchmailconfig works fine.
Is there a way to repair that error?
Regards
FlorianI had the same issue, and now after some digigng I have the answer.
As you have found the the issue is that fecthmailconf.py is not in the right place (or even on the disk for 10.7.2), and if you look at the script fecthmailconf it pretty much tells you as much since the reference is to fetchmail.py being located at root i.e. exec /usr/bin/python /fetchmailconf.py "$@" = WRONG!.
I copied a version from the web and placed in the directory and it didn't work and showed the same error that you exposed. I suspect the .py file and the 6.3.18 are not matched version of the files required.
What I did was download fetchmail source (6.3.21) & installed the latest version of xcode.
I then cd to the directory I had downloaded and uncompressed the source to and typed the following at the command prompt. (these instructions in long form are in the INSTALL text file with the source)
>$ ./configure --with-ssl
>$ make
This built a new version of fecthmail
>$ sudo make install
This installed the files, however. This caused a issue in that the new version of fetchmail and fecthmailconf where not copied to /usr/bin so i did the following
>$ sudo cp fetchmail /usr/bin/fetchmail
>$ sudo cp fetchmail /usr/bin/fetchmailconf
Then everything worked fine with fetchmailconf.
[That said, I did find that creating my .fetchmailrc and then before calling fecthmail you actually type fetchmail -V at the prompt. fetchmail will tell you how it will interpret the file and gives an indication if you have gone wrong or made a syntax error]
[NOTE: if you want all the features in fetchmail that Apple ship you need to add --with-gssapi --with-kerberos to configure command (if you are not using it though it does not matter) ] -
Can you install Lion server but still use the mac as normal?
I have a Macbook Pro and I would like to install Lion server. I was wondering if when I buy it off the mac app store if it works like any application so I can like close out of the server and use the mac as normal like to get on the Internet, or if Lion server installs like a new operation system and I can't use my mac as normal?
Thanks
WirelessChargeWelcome to the Apple Support Communities
Of course. On Mountain Lion and Lion, Server is just an app, so you can close it and turn off its services whenever you want to use your Mac as usual, although you don't have to close Server app to use the computer as normal -
[link] What I Wish I'd Known Before My Lion Server Install
All-
A couple people suggested that I post a link to this article from another forum... a few things that I needed to do to get a good Lion Server installation up and running solidly.
What I wish I'd Known Before My Lion Server Install
Cheers! There are 2 distinct apps in Lion Server.... Podcast (in Server app) and Podcast Producer (Server admin which is deemed legacy from SNS). Podcast uses Podcast Publisher instead of Podcast Capture to produce, edit and submit to Podcast app. Podcast doesn't requre Xgrid where PCP did. The two don't mix.
It's as clear as mud in all the documentation about this.
We're finding that Podcast Publisher has much more flexibility that Podcast Capture (edit, episodes & more), can use existing workflow from PCP, doesn't require xgrid, and podcasts can easily be managed by non-IT people via the Podcast wiki as opposed to the CLI pcast commands to edit & modify PCP feeds.
Hope this helps. -
OS X Lion Server upgrade *failed*, now what?
The installation process got as far as registering a message like, "Upgrading Services, failed". The only option was to click the Lion icon for reboot. That, I did, then I couldn't find the 10.7 Server Admin Tools, which I had to download separately. The "Open Directory" part of the Server Admin UI does not have the *expected* start/stop button and the service is stopped.
It would be nice to have a post-upgrade program to checklist what went well, what needs fixing with pointers to resources. It's possible none of my services programs got upgraded.
I got an email receipt with a link to "Report a Problem" which turns out to be mostly a hole for getting lost, but at least it got me here to present feedback.goeres wrote:
But do we need all the blows and wristles?
Yes. Lion Server out of the box does not allow for complex custom configurations short of manually editing text configuration files, which is an ironic step backwards from SL Server considering Apple's commitment to ease-of-use GUIs.
Instead of improving the admin tools that were available with SL Server, they simply removed too many of them. That would suggest that they've given up on the market for business servers to focus on the market for toy servers for home use, which is a bit disconserting considering that Lion Server's security is also woefully lacking out of the box. It's hard to figure how any IT professional could take it seriously.
The Internet is a dangerous place to play with a server. Apple's quest to simplify OS X Server with Lion has resulted in a server package that is dangerously simplistic. If Lion Server becomes popular for home use, I expect to see a rapid expansion of botnets. -
I have discovered that Lion Server is very particular about the order in which you configure things.
This is my fourth attempt at a clean installation, and I cannot get past the creation of the OD Master.
The creation log shows that the CA certificate creation is failing because "***Error creating domain CA. Error - The specified item already exists in the keychain."
One of the nasty side effects of having the Lion installer pull apps and such from a TimeMachine backup is that it drags all the /etc/certificates contents over.
I removed all the old domain certificate files, and I deleted them from my Keychain. I cannot find where this 'already exists' issue is cropping up.
Which keychain is this refering to? I am a total OD newb.
Thanks!Hmmmm.... sorry to hear.
You might try going through Keychain Access app, and search for old keys for your hostname and remove them.
It is puzzling why ~/Library/Application Support/Certificate Authority is not there - and it's not on my system any more either. Perhaps it was a vestage of a previous OS version? Very curious.
Best of luck to you!
