Cause of Itunes 7.6.0.29 freezes on Windows - .mpeg updates

Short version - itunes is nuts, and is digging through your videos while you're trying to listen to music. Take all video (including video podcasts) out of your iTunes library, and return to normal. Save it somewhere and put it back in whenever they issue a patch.
Long version:
I have a large collection of music and video on iTunes (14k items, 60GB), and ever since upgrading to the latest Itunes I've noticed I can start playing a song, but then the UI will freeze for 10-15 seconds once it's about 8-9 second into playing the song - the sound continues, but the interface becomes unresponsive. Looking at the other threads here, sounds like I'm not the only one with the problem.
Using Process Explorer from Systeminternals, I noticed this freeze corresponds to a huge spike in IO from itunes.exe at that time. Purely guessing, but it seems like the UI/event loop thread is blocking doing some sort of disk access, while the thread playing the music continues.
Using Process Monitor (again from sysinternals), I monitored what exactly Itunes.exe was doing at this time. It is going through every MPEG file in the iTunes library, opening it, querying data about it, and apparently in some cases, reading it in completely. This is while playing an unrelated sound file. This clearly seems to be due to a bug - there doesn't seem to be any immediate need to do this.
Removing all the videos from my iTunes library brought things back to normal. Hardly ideal, but way, way better than the way it was.

Hi Bemis,
Yep, I spotted this a couple of days back - I'm running Mac OS, but it's the same deal with the MPEG files (the Apple-supplied Activity Monitor does a good job with respect to examining individual programmes, threads or even processes).
However, I would like to refine your observation a little: I think it has to do with some format(s) of MUXED MPGs, since with non-muxed MPGs or movies of other formats, the files are updated (somehow, with some information, whatever it is), and then not checked again. Specifically, only the movies in my library from a SONY camera (muxed MPEG1 files) are causing the problem - countless other files with various formats/containers are checked and updated just once, in the background, and don't cause a problem.
I am guessing it has something to do with the new Apple movie service, maybe looking for 'out of date' rental files, so as to delete them, and marking (or, in the case of the MPGs which are repeatedly checked, trying to mark) them as non-rental films.
Apple (or an Apple employee, to be precise) actually FINALLY reacted with the following post (see the end of the locked thread):
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6426729
Pretty lame, really - I mean, there are better ways of finding MPG files than clicking 'info' on individual files, particularly if you have 100's or even 1000's of video files. And even if this is a temporary solution, it's pathetic that there is not even a word about an update to solve it permanently and properly, so that iTunes can carry on being used as a central media library without exceptions.
But here's hoping The one (vaguely) bright light is that Apple at least FINALLY reacted on a semi-official basis, instead of blaming the individual computers, which shows that they do really keep at least a bit of an eye on these discussions.

  • ITune does a lot of freezing since the last update

    Hi:
I have been having a lot of problems downloading the Rush podcast ever since the last upgrade.
What use to take less than a minute now takes about ten minutes, including a bunch of "iTunes not responding".
    What might be my problems?
    Thanks
    Dan Page

hello, in order to further diagnose the issue please [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|run firefox in safemode once]] & see if the problem is occuring there too. if not it may be related to one of your addons or hardware acceleration. in this case try disabling all extensions in tools > addons > extension, restart firefox and reenable the extensions one-by-one (restarts of the browser might be necessary after each time) until you find the one that's causing it. you can disable hardware acceleration in tools > options > advanced > general.
if the two suggestions from above don't help, please also have a look at your security-software & make sure it's not blocking/sandboxing the updated version of firefox or the plugin-container...

  • ITunes Freezing after 11/2012 update.

The new iTunes upgrade keeps causing my iTunes to freeze whenever I attempt to click on the search bar.  I have to continuously force quit and restart the program.
Any idea on what could be causing this?  I have restarted my M.B.P numerous times hoping it would solve the problem, but nothing at all happens.

    Hi,
I'm having similar issues. When open iTunes, I now wait a couple minute before trying to sync iPad or iPod, or add or delete files.
iTunes appears to doing something in the background and usually lasts 2 or 3 minutes. This background active occurs  when I have updated iTunes match, the deleting files I want to replace with the matched version.
This very annoying as it stops downloads until background work finished. There are also memory issues.
Has only happened since last update.

  • My iPod / iTunes wont transfer songs and freezes

Right quick lowdown... Got iPod classic 160gb last Summer. Transferred all music onto it eventually and it worked perfectly until a few months ago. It randomly crashed when sync'ing one time and then was unable to function properly without crashing thereafter. I sent it back, there was a fault and i got a replacement just the other day.
So tried sync'ing my new iPod. Sync'd like hundred songs or so then stopped with (-69) error coming up. Tried Sync'ing again and it added some more songs then got same error message. Kept trying and then eventually it wiped all songs off iPod that it had sync'ed before. Everytime i try to sync it comes up with a random error message (-53) (-48) (-49) (-120) etc. Lost track of all the errors it's given me.
I have since tried manually transferring songs and some go on without a problem, whereas others cos iTunes and my iPod to freeze. I then get a message saying iTunes is not responding and when i safely remove my iPod it sometimes scrubs everything that was on it, sometimes it doesn't
I read somewhere else i could have corrupt files preventing me from being able to transfer and Sync. The fact is i didn't have trouble before (i used first ipod for months with no problems) and recently been using an old ipod mini while i sorted out my broken classic and it has worked fine with no problems. I've been updating iTunes every time the updates come available.
Can anybody provide any help??? Why has my iPod all of a sudden refused to transfer some songs? Is it likely that corrupt songs are somehow now preventing me from transferring tracks or is there something wrong with this iPod too? Or could there be another fault?
    Thanks in advance

  • ITunes 11.0.2.26 Freezes when playing songs

    Using Win 7 64 bit SP1.
What I have noticed is, that if left on its own, iTunes 11.0.2.26 seems fine, but once other programs are opened and used... in my case memory/processor intense things like Powerpoint and doing Internet Searches ESPECIALLY for graphics (using Chrome OR IE 10), songs first start to "stutter" and finally iTunes freezes/crashes.
Entering Task Manager I can successfully stop the application/processes/services, but the program obviously does not clear memory, in that it will not restart without rebooting.
I did not have this problem with earlier iterations of iTunes although I did notice some "stuttering" beginning with ver 10.
Any help/suggestions for a solution will be appreciated....I am a technical writer working in Powerpoint for online courses/presentations and music playing is a necessary part of my creative process. I'm about ready to chuck everything "Apple" and try to figure out how to play MY music (bought and paid for) in another fashion.

    First I would try this
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Next remove the Apple software using the instruction above and install a previous version. You can Google to find the previous versions

  • ITunes 10.6.1 (7) freezes when syncing brand new iPod Classic

In my attempts to sync a brand new iPod Classic (160 GB) with iTunes I only get a freeze up of iTunes, where only a force quit helps to terminate the hang. I have of course done all the usual, i.e. restored the entire iPod Classic, restarted my Mac, made sure all software is the latest software. All to no avail.

Syncing a 160GB iPod Classic, may take a long time, so better to stop all other process or apps, when you do it.
Especially, disconnect all other USB devices and connect the iPod directly to the body of the Mac and not to the Keyboard USB port or any USB hub.
I think you have done all other suggestions, that I can think of.
Except doing a Disk Diagnostic on this new iPod, and send it back to Apple if the DD report is bad, refer to this earlier post by tt2

Itunes will no longer work on my Windows 8 PC. When I attempt to start the program a message says: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.  I have tried to uninstall iTunes but the Windows uninstaller will not delete the program I get a message that says: A network error occurred while attempting to read file: C:\Windows|Installer|iTunes.msi.  How do I get iTunes to work again?

Whentrying to uninstall iTunes (the first program that must be uninstalled per the instructions) I get a message:  A network error occurred while attempting to read file: C:\Windows|Installer|iTunes.msi. I can't even uninstall iTunes?
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Why does iTunes and my whole computer freeze when syncing songs to phone?

Im trying to sync my iPhone 3gs with iTunes but my laptop keeps freezing after 14 songs why is this? I have recently upgraded to ios5 so im guessing its because of this..how do i solve my problem?

Do you have all the latest software updates? This seemed to be a problem with earlier versions but everything seems to be running okay with iTunes 7.7.1 and iPhone 2.0.2 (which came out yesterday)

  • Just upgraded to 10.7 - cannot play movies or TV programs - iTunes freezes and Windows states iTunes has stopped working and kicks me out - play audio OK, store and synching to devices OK.

Running Windows Vista Home Premium - Service Pack2
iTunes has always worked beautifully - opened it yesterday and said upgrade was available so I did and upgrade seemed to be successful - no errors and program launches and all my music, TV programs, Movies, etc, were there. Audio works well.  Tonight I tried to play a movie and got the Windows iTunes has stopped working and searching for solution (which there is none) and closing the warning box closes iTunes.  iTunes used to launch a "separate" black window for my movies/TV - I seemed to get  a black background before everything freezes.  Not happy.  Thanks for any help - I tried to upgrade quicktime just to make sure it wasn't lagging behind the iTunes upgrade but that didn't help.

  • Itunes Videos freezing with windows 7!

I just got a brand new dell studio last week; i installed itunes 9 with the 64bit and for the first few days it worked just fine and now I will be watching a movie on itunes and my computer will freeze and go black, requiring me to do a manual shut down because i can no longer move my cursor or click anything. I've heard other problems with windows 7 and itunes. When i insert a regular DVD into windows media it works just fine. So far my computer only freezes with my itunes videos but who knows next week it could be my music too!
    HELP!

I had the same issue for windows 7. Right click on the iTunes setup file and run as administrator, it works.

  • Every time I try and install iTunes 9.2 my laptop freezes up

Every time I try and install iTunes 9.2 my Acer Aspire 5920 freezes up when the install gets to registering iTunes Automation Service. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have the iPhone 3GS 32 GB, with the new iOS 4 OS. Since I have the OS upgrade I can't get update my iPhone without 9.2. In the past I have had problems getting iTunes to update but have always been able to go back to an earlier version but now with iOS 4 that is no longer an option.

For "Key not valid for use in specified state" errors try moving the folder RSA from C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA to say C:\<User>\RSA (just in case there should be a need to restore it) then try installing again. This folder appears to act as a cache and should be rebuilt automatically as required.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Updating podcasts causes my iTunes to fail and close

When I update my podcasts, whether manually by using the refresh button or allowing the program to go update, it causes my iTunes to fail and close. I have tried multiple times, closing and restarting, killing it in Task Manager and restarting, rebooting the PC, and even uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. I do get a generic "ITunes has encountered and issue and will close now. Windows will notify you if there is a solution" message, but that's it.

  • What causes my iTunes songs to be redownloaded?

What causes my iTunes songs to be redownloaded?

First consolidate the itunes library so all music files listed in itunes are COPIED to the "iTUnes Music" folder.
Now you can copy the "iTUnes" folder (Located in my music) to the memory stick and have both the music AND the itunes library with its playlist and all so when you get a new PC you can set everything back up like nothing happened.
