Caution: Before you install Mountain Lion ...

To avoid problems, you should drag-out the Diagnostic Disc that came with your machine (if there is one), (mine boots with the "D"-keyboard-key held-down whilst booting), and verify that all locations in RAM are working properly by doing a full diagnostic (this may take a few hours -- be patient).
If the RAM locations don't work properly, it can cause all sorts of problems with your machine -- take it to the Apple Store at the Mall !
Then you should boot-up normally, and go into the "Utilities":"Disk Utility" application, select the indented internal drive, and hit the "Verify Disk" button.
If the internal drive doesn't "Verify" properly, you need to reboot into the Lion "Recovery partition, activate "Disk Utiltity" from there, and "Repair Disk".
If it repairs the disk properly, then using the same program, re-"Verify" the internal disk.
Then you should use "Disk Utility", and "Repair Permissions" before, (and probably after), installing Mountain Lion.

  • How do you install mountain lion on all your macs in the household using one 20 dollar license?

how do you install mountain lion on all your macs in the houshold with the same license (you only pay 20 bucks for all your macs) is that right?

As long as they're all logged into the Mac App store with the same Apple ID, you can re-download the installer to all the Macs.
Or you can save a copy of the installer file before you run it and use that to update the other Macs. The ML installer file will appear in your Applications folder when it's done downloading. Copy it to another location (don't move it).
If you don't copy it before you upgrade, it will disappear when ML is finished installing.

  • My account data has been removed since installing Mountain Lion

After I installed Mountain Lion, I noticed that my wallpaper had changed. Then I noticed that my dock had changed. Then I found out that all the data I had on my account before I installed Mountain Lion had been locked away under a folder called "Users 1". My question is: How do I retrieve this data, and use that data on my account as I did before?
    Thank you!
    Jacob Brandt

Ok I finally find how to resolve it.
    1/ enable "root" account
2/ log in as "root" and great a new admin count. Whatever about the name.
3/ disable all the other count as admin. and delete it. Of course in the folder "users 1" every thing was untouch.
4/ normally at this point in users folder there is only the "shared" account and the new admin.
Then, in finder, simply put your originals count folders (from "users 1") to the normal "users" folder.
5/ create new user account with same name and password. And normally you obtain at the end the wonder message (who repairs the permissions users) "there is a folder with this account information..." clic yes. And it's done.
    As the original.
    6/ disable "root" user.
I suggest after this little journey to re-install ML from a original and un-corrupted copy, with only one admin user (all other account must be "standard" account.

Only way is if you made a backup of your system before you installed Mt Lion.
Or if your system came with Lion Pre-Installed you boot to the online recovery system, Hold down Command+option+r at startup until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen.

  • Time machine question when installing Mountain Lion

    I have a 2010 iMac running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
I am preparing to install Mountain Lion, and can't find any instruction about what to do
with my Time Machine which is on an external hard drive.
Do I eject it before I install Mountain Lion and then just plug it back in afterwards?
Will I still be able to see the older backups?
    Thanks

    No, and yes.

  • My dvd quit working after installing mountain lion

It was working fine before I installed Mountain Lion. It took the disk in and then ejected it. Now it acts like it is completely dead - like something just turned it off. I've never used the drive that much. It's a mid to late 2010 aluminum iMac.

Tried alot of things, but it finally started working after resetting the SMC controller - go figure...

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • My Macbook pro is running slow. Should I do a clean install before installing Mountain Lion?

My Macbook Pro has been taking forever to start up, and open windows, plus I get a lot of the spinning wheel of slow death when I'm working in my design programs. I HATE messing with my systems, because something always seems to go wrong.
Also, I have an iMac too. Can I install it on both machines if it is downloaded instead of a disk? Is that allowed?

Fix your Machines BEFORE Upgrading the OS... Otherwise you will only compound your issues...
Basically... Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 25 GB +
This is what Apple has to say.

I have installed Mountain Lion 10.8.1 but still cannot get email from my work exchange account. I'd appreciate any help.  Thank you.

I would delete the account and try to re-enter it. Also, you have to let your firm's IT department know that you want to sync work email on your personal devices before they actually work.

  • I installed Mountain Lion tonight, but the Java that was on my iMac before has now disappeared.  How can I reinstall it?

How do install Java on my iMac now that I am running Mountain Lion?  It was on my iMac before, but has now disappeared.

You ought to get a dialog asking to install the first time you run an app that needs it
    Details here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1167855/installing_mountain_lion_what_you_need_t o_know.html
    The relevant bit is this:
Note that the first time you try to load a webpage or run an app that requires Java, Mountain Lion will prompt you to download and install the Java runtime, even if you upgraded from Snow Leopard or Lion and you’d previously installed Java. This is normal—you shouldn’t worry that installing Mountain Lion somehow “lost” any of your data or apps.
Or you can go to the Apple Downloads page and search for Java

I JUST INSTALLED MOUNTAIN LION, NOW THE SCROLL BALL ON MY MAGIC MOUSE SCROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAN IT DID BEFORE. I NOW HAVE TO ROLL THE BALL UP TO SCROLL DOWN.

If you go into System Preferences> Mouse. There is a box at the top of the screen that states Scroll direction: natural.
Be sure to uncheck the box after installing MOUNTAIN LION, then the mouse ball will scroll in uthe normal fashion.
       Thanks for all the help...

I have installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 but still cannot get email from my work exchange account. I'd appreciate any help.  Thank you.

You can go to the Apple online store and purcahse a copy of Mountain Lion.  This will give you a redemption code, which you can use to download Mountain Lion from the App Store.  Unfortuantely, I'm not aware of any other way to legally purchase it.  I have never seen Apple release Muontain Lion on DVD.
In terms of Apple Service, they just need the serial number of the machine to check the purcahse date.  It is usually correct, to within a few weeks.  A quick Google search should give you the correct number to dial.
    I hope this helps.
