Caution: MBP 17" Hi-Res Labeled as Wrong Screen

Purchased a Macbook Pro at Apple store Wednesday, the 17" hi-res model with 1920x1200 matte LED screen (also 7200 rpm drive and 2 GB of RAM options). After getting home, transferring files, and logging into desktop, discovered it was actually a 1680x1050 screen.
Double checked the box, labeled 1920x1200. Double checked the serial number on box and internal to the Mac, and the box matched the system bios. All other custom specs were correct, just the *wrong screen resolution*.
Took it back to Apple store. They said they'd never seen this before. They gave me another one, and after getting home, transferring files, and logging in, I was happy to see it was the correct resolution.
(First guess was maybe the box spec label was the only thing wrong, but the SKU from box serial number label also rang as the hi-res screen, and that serial showed as hi-res screen at Genius Bar, and that serial matched the internal system serial. So somehow the Macbook had had the wrong screen assembled onto it.)
In any case, if you bought the hi-res version last week or so, doesn't hurt to check and make sure you got what you paid for.

I ordered a 17" hi-res glossy LCD (LED back lit) screen around mid May and got a matte screen instead. The label on the box and on the computer all matched the order as hi-res glossy. The display sure looks like a matte version to me. Since I was on the fence on which one to get anyway, I just kept it.
I've had no issues with the MBP or display so far, no stripes or anything like that.

I think you are sailing in uncharted waters with those kind of modifications.
I am only guessing, but if you have not already done so,  do a PRAM reset and then trash your FCP preferences.

I've also notice when I start the computer up, it stays on the grey screen longer than it did when I had the original card (512 mb).
My understanding is the Mac is doing a ram/hardware test during the grey screen, if the card you added had additional memory, then it is very likely the test will take longer - but I am no hardware expert.

Well done to the Air team for the good work done so far, not easy keeping up with Apple on IOS8  at the moment...

I am having simliar issue where I can get the iphone 6 launch image to work but not the iphone 6+ when using [email protected], 2208x1242.  Also the stage.fullScreenWidth/Height give 1472x828, which is 2/3 the expected dimensions or 736x414 at scale factor 2, not 3.  I hope adobe fixes this soon or we won't be able to launch new games with Apple as it is a requirement to have your apps Iphone 6/6+ optimized.  If this isn't fixed soon were pretty much forced to abandon adobe and move onto another software solution that will allow us to build for Apple.

  • Command-tab during Keynote shows on wrong screen

    Hi,
Since I upgraded Keynote I now see the icons of the programs I have open during a command-tab keystroke on the wrong screen. My audience sees everything I have open and I am lost on my screen.
It does not always occur. When I hook up my MacBook to a large screen beamer yes. Not when I connect to just another monitor on my desk. There is some little option somewhere I guess... But what has changed where?

Alternatively, hit the letter 'x' when in slideshow mode to eXchange the two different views between the two screens...
    The switch should be instantaneous.
    Jai
ps hit the '/' to get other keyboard commands on screen.

  • I have a new MBP with high-res display, and the color seems washed out compared to my old MBP.  Is this normal?

Putting the two laptops side by side, blacks on my old machine look dark grey on the new one.  I also have 24" and 27" cinema displays, and the new high res laptop display looks washed out in comparison.
I have tried to recalibrate the screen color settings, but this doesn't seem to make much difference.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    David.

Yes, the gamma settings are the same on all 4 displays (my two laptops and the two displays).
After a little experimentation, I think that it's down to the brightness of the high resolution display.  It would seem that it is slightly dimmer than the low-res one on my other 15" MBP, so I think that Apple have set the default colour profile to be slightly washed out to compensate.  If I use the same profile on the high-res MBP screen as on the low-res MBP screen, then the colour is much better.
The cinema displays are a lot better than the laptop displays, but I was expecting the new high-res display to be as good as the old low-res one - especially as I paid a lot more money for it!
Ah well!  I think I might take it into the store and just check that it is the norm for this...
    Thanks for your help.

  • MBP 15 Hi-Res, any reviews?

I'm interested in the 15" MBP hi-res but can't seem to find any in the store with the glossy screen. The only one they carry in store (Walnut Creek, CA) is the 15" hi-res matte screen.
Does anyone who has messed around with the 15" hi-res (glossy) have any feedback?
    thanks

Just received my 15" MacBook Pro with hi-res anti-glare screen today. Love the screen (came from a Core2Duo MacBook, black casing) on the MacBook Pro, crazy bright. Love the anti-glare, can't stand glossy screens.
I was a little surprised to see that my MacBook Pro has no black bezel, it is all aluminum with a black rubber seal along the outer edge. It reminds me of my PowerBook G4 casing actually. I have no problem with its looks. Haven't really ever been around recent MacBook Pros with the glossy screens to compare if the regular black bezel looks better or not.
Screen is absolutely great though, go for high-res, and go for anti-glare. I am a professional photographer and now I finally have a laptop screen I would trust with editing shots for clients on (my glossy MacBook I had connected to an external Dell 2407 WFP-HC monitor all its life basically).

  • MBA (fully upgraded) vs. MBP 15" (+ hi-res, 128 GB SSD)

    Hi All,
I'm trying to decide on my first computer (that I own, anyway.) I'm a junior electrical engineering student, and managed to get by on campus computers and my mom's work laptop (2009 MBP 13".) But it's nice having my own computer for obvious reasons. Here's what I would be doing on whichever MacBook I get:
-Schoolwork, obviously (papers, spreadsheets, some circuit designing/programming, surfing, etc.)
    -Music listening/movie watching
-Some gaming. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I will dual boot and play. On Steam I own The Orange Box, BioShock 1+2, GTA IV, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
-Some Pixelmator, GarageBand, Logic Express, iMovie, etc.
The obvious choice is a MacBook Pro, I know, but I have a few caveats. I love the size/portability of the MacBook Air, and the optimizations that give it great performance for its size. Also, the 256GB blade flash memory is very hard to match for its price. If I get the Air, I'll upgrade the processor, RAM, and storage to the fullest. Still, the C2D seems a bit old and less future proof.
But if I go with a Pro, I'm going to get the base 15" with a hi-res glossy screen and a 128GB SSD. I want an SSD for its durability and speed (although I read somewhere that the blade flash mem is faster than a standard 2.5" SSD.) The 256GB SSD would be ideal, but it's so expensive (from 3rd parties, as well.) Of course I'd get a Quad-core and Thunderbolt, AMD GPU, etc. Again, I'm only a casual gamer, but it's nice playing with a good discrete GPU, etc.
I like the new MBP update, but I just wish the SuperDrive were removed (I don't need it), flash storage became standard (and expanded), and the chassis was made Air-like thin. I see no point in getting the MBP 13", because I may as well get the MBA 13".
Compared to the Air, is the MBP 15" really that much less portable, and really that much more disproportionate in speed for its size, even with an SSD? And how does the Air perform with the games and apps I've mentioned? I just don't want a big heavy relatively slow (but still fast) slab, or an under-equipped under-powered less future-proof luxury item.
Either way, I'm going to wait until summer so I can get Lion pre-installed (as a college student, I'm rich enough to get a Mac, but poor enough to want to save.) I kind of already decided on the MBP 15", but the Air is just soo tempting.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Michael

I like the MBA 13 inch base model, and I think it is a great computer. However, if you have the money, I totally recommend the MBP 15 inch. It is blazing fast. I think you should get a 64 or 32 GB Flash and an optibay. If you don't use your optical drive a lot, it is a great replacement so you can have the OS on the SSD, and all your main files on the big drive. It works well for a lot of people that I know of. The Air is light, and its screen is great. If your 2009 MBP worked fine for whatever you do, then the Air will be perfect. If you have trouble accomplishing some tasks on that computer, get the 2011 Pro. Good luck, and keep in mind you can return it within two weeks

  • Random (mysterious) start-ups from shutdown on MBP 17" (Hi-Res)

    Hi,
lately, my MBP has started to turn itself on at night. I always shut it down completely after a days' work (NOT making it sleep or standby, also NOT closing the lid before the shutdown is done). Actually, I tried waiting 5-10 minutes before closing the lid after the shutdown just to make sure I wasn't interrupting anything.
Now, in the morning, my MBP sits there sleeping (the light on the front is in "breathing" mode), and after opening the lid it is completely booted up.
Syslog shows me it randomly started at some time in the night (between 1h and 5h hours after the shutdown.
Of course I made sure that I have not set a startup time in the power setting's scheduler.
What could be the reason for this?

My MBP 15in also mysteriously self-starts. I have determined that this occurs every evening at 7:00 pm sharp when the AC power is attached. This is despite the fact that I have no scheduled start-up time configured. I have yet to have it happen on battery. It has been happening regularly when nothing else is plugged in, not USB, FW, nothing. Sharing and remote management may be turned on or off as otherwise needed and have no noticed influence.

  • Graphics problems with 15in MBP with HI res screen

Ever since I got a new MBP for Christmas I have had seemingly random problems.  It would freeze up and one or more of the cores would saturate at 100%.  I have one of those programs that shows core activity, not unlike Activity Monitor, but in more detail.  This has happened on CAD, email and  other programs.  I wondered if the 8GB of memory was bad (after market), or the software just wasn't yet optimized for Lion.
Now, I am focusing on the graphics/display.  It is the constant factor in all the problems.  In CAD, the screeen sometimes does not refresh correctly.  I will execute a zoom command and half the screen will zoom and the rest will not. Screen refreshes don't happen, etc.
In my email program (SeaMonkey = Thunderbird), I would read an email, then click Reply.  The page would change to the reply page, but no entries would appear.  After a minute or two, they would appear.  I thought the latest upgrade would help, but the same thing happened.
Sometimes when the machine is idle, a core will hit 100% duty cycle and sit there for 10-15 seconds before dropping back down to normal.
I guess it is time to take the machine in to the Genius bar.

Well, I do know and have mentioned in other benchmarking or performance threads, that having too many objects on the desktop has a clear impact on startup performance, but would never have guessed it got this bad year round. At startup, had observed the Finder busy refreshing and redrawing all the icons (which in this graphics-happy world implied opening each file to create a mini screenshot of the content), and this would bog the process down more and more as you left more items there. But would never have guessed that the Finder's obsession with up-to-date icons would go that far.
Maybe one or some of the files placed on the desktop would require the help of an overly resource hungry app to redraw its icon, maybe even requiring an Internet excursion to gather further info. All this, of course, behind your back while you impatiently wait for the process to conclude. And your observation that the graphics infrastructure seemed to be involved would be congruent, since this is all the OS' efforts to provide better eye candy.
BTW, you may be interested in downloading and running the gfxCardStatus utility. It places a discreet letter in the right of the menu bar, that indicates whether the Intel (integrated) or the Radeon (discrete) GPU is in use, which has an impact on graphics performance and battery life. Also lets you force the use of one or the other, should auto switching prove insatisfactory at a given instant.

  • 2010 MBP i7 High Res - Video garbling, screen not refreshing

I'm having a problem with my 4 month old 15" MPB Core i7 High Res display. Sometimes when I am surfing in Safari, I'll navigate to a new page, but the center 1/3 of the last page I was on will remain on the new page, covering up the new page content with the old page.
Also, sometimes some images appear as blocks of garbled mess, especially when I quit safari and go back to the desktop such as the screen shot below. Graphics card issue? Often, I'll close Safari, and a chunk of the web page is still on my desktop, and it's all garbled up...it's like the graphics card isn't refreshing that area of the screen.
    See example screen shot:
    http://i53.tinypic.com/2dux4i.jpg

I am having the same problem with my i7 anti glare...it seems when I use safari and it has flash in the web page this problem occasionally occurs. If I turn automatic graphic switching off and then on it seems to work okay. I posted here:
