Can iPhoto '06 destroy entire libraries backed up on external hard drives!!??
I'm posting this before I've confirmed what really happened, but I just lost several entire iPhoto libraries that were backed up on external drives. By all indications this happened because I installed '06 and was too quick to "OK" a couple of questions '06 asked during the "library update" process.
- I sometimes back up my entire iPhoto library onto an external drive in order to make quick and dirty or alternate edits to a batch of images. I access the backup library from an alternate user account to make the alternate edits.(Sounds complicated, but it's a cheap workaround to iPhoto's inability to merge libraries or copy albums.)
- I end up with multiple copies of the same images (in the alt libraries) but some of the images have been worked (ie retouched, colour corrected, etc) differently. The alts are therefore valuable, and I go back later to export the ones I want from the alt libraries and reimport them into my main library.
- During the first run of iPhoto '06 on this particular system iPhoto asked a couple questions. Unfortunately, I don't recall them precisely but I think one was about "found images outside the Library, do you want to import them" and the second was "do you want to import duplicate images?"
- I answered "Yes" and "No, apply to all duplicates" respectively. The library update process continued. I thought that it was spending an awful long time on duplicates considering there should not have been many. But update finished and '06 works fine on that machine. I can't spot any "images found outside the library", so I don't know what that was about.
- But then I noticed that three entire 10,000 image libraries were simply MISSING from the external Firewire drive! Every single image in those libraries was a "duplicate" of an image in my main library. (But of course in my case they were not exact duplicates, just duplicates in name and metadata.)
- All that remains in the alternate libraries are iPhoto database and XML files, no more photos!
I can't be sure that iPhoto '06 did this. But it looks suspiciously like the "library update" process went looking for image files, found the images in the libraries on the external drive, "imported" them, and erased every single one of them as "duplicates"!
I have in this case a somewhat unusual setup, but if this is in fact what happened it has implications for anyone who simply backs up their library to an external drive: iPhoto '06 might zap your backups because they're "duplicates"!
This may be a false alarm, because there are too many uncontrolled variables and I haven't tried to duplicate the scenario yet. I'm posting this because it's a potentially serious issue for some users and to see if anyone else has any insight or similar experience.

I too am facing the unfathomable reality that all of my photos somehow have been haphazardly reshuffled by iPhoto 6.
I have "rolls" that once had a date relevance now given a random number. I now have a 3GB "Modified" folder full of images which are exact duplicates that exist in an "Originals" folder (12GB) but have been copied because they were shot in Portrait Orientation.
I don't even know where to start to sort this out. A cold, sinking feeling of despair is taking over me at the thought...
I wish I had some helpful advice for you. But I'm looking for answers myself.

ITunes 9.1.0.79 update completely destroyed my iPod Touch

I am one unhappy Apple customer and highly doubt if I would buy another apple product again. The update before the one mentioned in topic had issues with the genius playlist I had a prior post about with of course no responses from Apple. The new update mentioned in topic seemed to fix the problem for a day. Since then I have not used my iPod touch 2nd generation. I tried to use it today since I had appointments to go to, the screen stays black, won't power on even after holding down the button at top and the button at the bottom of the screen. My touch will not even be recognized by iTunes when it is started up on the pc and the touch is plugged in. I sm so upset with this and all these updates that destroy our equipment, Apple should be held responsible and give us all with problems a refund or give us all new items. My touch is not used that often. In the 1 1/2 years I have had it I probably have 30 hours run time on it if that. There is not a scratch on it and looks as if it came right out of the case so I know I do not abuse my property. It's all these updates that destroy our merchandise our hard earned money bought. Does Apple think we'll just step right out and buy another one?? Well that's debatable and if I do, it won't be another Apple product.

I installed the last iTunes update and sync'ed my iPod touch to it. While it was connected and after the sync, it worked fine, I could get to all the menus and the genius feature was not trying to search for a playlist like it did with the prior update. With the prior update last month, I had the genius feature turned off but the iPod still wanted to do a search, send a message to the screen of the iPod that the feature was turned off, I would have to navigate back to my songs list and hit shuffle again, it would play about 6 songs then start repeating them. Now that the last update came out last week and that problem stopped, I unplugged my Touch and did not use it until today. I tried to power it on and it just stays a black screen. I held down the power button for several minutes and it won't power up. I pressed the on button on the front and it does nothing. I plugged the usb connector into my pc and iTunes won't even recognize the iPod. The battery had a full charge when it was disconnected after the update and sync. Yes I am ranting because I rarely use the iPod and am upset that Apple will do nothing to fix what their updates messed up. Yes I want my Touch fixed. I didn't pay all that money for a 32gb to get alittle over a year's use out of it. I was incorrect to say a year and a half, I bought it for my birthday last year Feb. so a year and 2 months I had this mp3 player, who can afford to throw out money like that?

I am sorry, but I fail to see how this will help the OP with USB 2.0 externals.
Now, for "the next time," it will work, but when one has a USB external, they have a single HDD USB 2.0 external. This is of no use with that equipment. That was my point.
I recommend one with an eSATA connection.
Or use internals.
Again, a "next time" solution, albeit a good one. I do not argue that different thing could, and should, be done. I just fail to see how your suggestions would help the OP with the "here and now."
Let's use the tried and true "automobile analoghy," that we are all quick to interject. The OP asks, "I had an accident with my MB S-500, and the grille was caved in. How do I fix it?" The answer, "next time, do not have the accident," does not address the issue. It is, of course, good advice, but does not help with the current problem. The "accident" has already happened. Yes, avoiding the next one is good advice, but is irrevelent in the "here and now."

After update cant create new libraries

i have a couple different libraries for 3 ipods in itunes (1 big one 2 smaller ones) and i lost the small ones after I updated which isn't such a big deal except now itunes wont let me open or create a new library. I push shift when i open itunes but still it wont work.

Press the shift key down then start iTunes, keep holding down the shift key until you get the choose library dialogue. Usually the problem is not holding down the shift key long enough.
If that doesn't work are you starting from a desktop short cut? I have sometimes had a problem with the desktop icon when the shift key start worked from All Programs.
You haven't given your operating system so I will assume it is Windows.
One last thing you might try is to go to Program Files\iTunes and try doing the shift key start from there on iTunes.exe.
If that works, right click on iTunes.exe and select Send to>>desktop(create short cut). Maybe the new short cut will work.

Downloading into shared file to update mutlple user account libraries

Following the directions in Article 93195, I successfully created a shared file between multiple user accounts on my IMAC. The problem is updating the Libraries on each account when I download new music into one account. I understand I can update each account manually using the "Add to Library" command, is there an automatic way to download ITunes into the shared library so that the Libraries on each user account are automatically updated with the new music?

Sorry, but iTunes has no "folder watching" feature. It might be possible to write an AppleScript as a folder action that would do this, but otherwise, you have to use the Add to Library funtion to get the new tracks into iTunes, or drag them manually into the iTunes window.

Photoshop CC fully updated will not show libraries in window drop down

I am using PScc with the latest update and trying to access my libraries for the files saved by my i phone apps. The issue is when I go to the window drop down in PS there is no option for "Libraries"

My advice is to install all the updates in order, not simply the latest one.
Also please pay careful attention to the download instructions.

Problem with my 3GS' update, might be carrier related.

So, I recently updated my 3GS to the latest update and all went well, seemingly.
Some, perhaps, important things before I describe what happened(see it as possible sources of discord with my goodwill if you want to):
-Before all this my iPhone worked well with a not-so-old version(think the last update was sometime last year before summer), I had music etc. on the phone and the phone was connected to an iTunes library, no problems.
-My phone was locked to a specific carrier and to use other it seems there was need of some kind of unlocking service
-I had it done, not properly at a store as I might should've, nonetheless it was done and they made some kind of mistake resulting in the deletion of my data, music and all what I had before.
-After the unlock(or whatever it's called) I was able to gain the services of the new carrier despite the mistake(the phone was still functional, it had just gotten an older version than before + all the data deleted. I hadn't connected it to iTunes between summer last year and now, so there was no contact between the phone and iTunes during this period, until just now(two/three days ago).
So,
I connected the phone to iTunes to update the version I was using, a very old one.
First iTunes notified me about the unit not being recognized as the iPhone for this library(something), so,
I'm asked to choose between 'restore old phone'(using back-up I had done before, before summer remember? ) and 'delete and use as new iPhone'.
Now, I'm not sure whether the options was really worded like so, but I tried to reconstruct them as best possible I could from memory(because I'm bad with print screen ), therefore please understand there might be some mistakes here and there..
Either way, I choose the later option and all as well. Then we come to the real issue: I then decided to update and install the newest version of software available for the phone, did so and then the phone was restarted...
Here is the nitty-gritty of it all, the problem~
-I still had the phone connected to iTunes-
and now it was high time for me, to my surprise, to configure the phone from start. I haven't needed to do this when updating before, but for all I know it might just be so with this update. Anyway, first is selection of language, then after that I'm to select region. Then 'Location Services'; two options 'Enable Location Services' or 'disable'. I choose disable, then there's Wi-Fi networks, though you can choose 'next' and connect via iTunes instead, I've tried both and here's what happens:
When using Wi-Fi, which I used first(I disconnected the phone and started the config.), I then click 'next' which takes me to the 'Activating your iPhone', where there's a loading screen, telling me it may take up to three minutes to activate. I wait and get(as seen on screen): Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your iPhone to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes.
Yeah, my face displays a fairly neutral emotion reacting to this message.. I continue with iTunes: I connect the phone, takes some time for it to either connect or be recognized as a unit, don't know which. Now there's an error message telling me 'There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate' and the suggestion 'Please disconnect and insert a SIM card'.. Now I'm, because there is a SIM card in the blasted phone!
So this is my problem and the question/-s would probably be "Is there something wrong with the SIM card?", "Is it Apple pulling my leg and keeping the server from reaching my computer?", "Am I just missing something because I'm ignorant??" or "Is it related to my carrier?"

New Update has destroyed my system's sound/audio. Help!

I just installed all of the new updates to Tiger and iTunes and it has absolutely destroyed my system's audio. Everything now sounds unlistenably scratchy, like a remote FM station that is not coming in very well. This applies to system sounds, itunes files -- everything sounds TERRIBLE.
What the heck has happened, and how do I fix it?

Newest itunes update deleted my entire library and playlists.

Im extremely unsatisfied, so could you think of a solution apple? All i did was download YOU'RE update, and it reopens with 0 playlists or songs in any libraries. minus some of the purchased songs i dont even want. These updates are getting more and more terrible, so do you think you could actually fix you're mistakes? thank you!

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

Every time I try to open my 2 year old copy of CS6, it takes me to the trial window. Updating either failed entirely or didn't help.

Apparently, there was a patch to fix this very same problem one year ago — i’ve tried it and it hasn’t helped. The first attempt failed to install. The second attempt supposedly succeeded but failed to help. I then tried going to the latest update -- 13.0.6 i believe -- but the exact same thing happened. It either failed to update successfully, or didn't help.
I’ve looking through my adobe account, and I can’t find CS6 registered with my products. Theres a copy of Elements 10 registered to the date when I believe my CS6 purchase occured, but whether this is new or not, I don’t know. I never peruse my adobe account enough to compare. Regardless, the serial number failed to help.
If there is anyone that can assist me, it would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of work I need to be able to get back to.

How to install ipa update without destroying user data

Hi - hopefully this is an easy one...
I'm getting near the end of my iPad app development... at this point I can store files locally on the iPad from my AIR app.
But everytime I make a change to the app and republish the ipa, the only way I know how to get it on my iPad is to delete the app on the iPad, then install the new version through iTunes. This works, but it blows away any locally saved 'user' files.
So how can i put a new ipa update on the device without losing stored data, similar to downloading an update from the app store?

That's what I'd like to do, but I'm just fumbling through iTunes - I drop the new ipa into my 'Apps' (under library), then go to my device to Sync, but it never installs the new version. It seems to think I'm already 'synced', even though the ipa is new. I must be missing something basic. Also, the ipa is in 'Quick publishing for device testing mode'... Perhaps it needs to be published for Ad-hoc distribution?

Mozilla update download destroyed my internet connection, no response when click on safe mode Mozilla Firefox

Security Update has destroyed my wireless Internet access

I am reposting this as a separate question as no one has answered my post from 2 days ago and I am getting desperate.
Ever since I downloaded the latest Apple security update two days ago for my OS Tiger, my wireless connection won't work, I am using a separate wireless stick (Sitecom) as Airport won't get me onto channel 13 here in Europe. I know I am connected to the Linksys router here, as the software of my wireless stick tells me this, but my Mail and Safari now tell me I am not connected to the Internet.
I have checked everything, the wireless stick is at the top of the list of my network connections and the box beside it is checked, and the numbers in the Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the wireless stick are still 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220. So now I am using a network cable as a temporary measure but I can't live like this as the router with the cable is 100 feet away from where I am staying.
It must be something to do with the latest Security Update as I literally was using the wireless perfectly to download the Security Update, then I switched off my computer and switched it on again, and now my wireless connection won't work. What should I do? I tried duplicating the wireless stick connection and then deleting the original but that didn't work. I am afraid to remove the files in my Library as suggested on another thread because I have lots of wireless connections as I travel a lot and I can never replace them all. Help!

well, I got it to work by following BDAqua's advice and adapting it for my external wireless stick - i.e. I went to System Preferences - Network - Show Network Port Configurations, and I highlighted my Sitecom wireless stick i.e. Ethernet Adaptor, and I then clicked Delete but I didn't pull the stick out. The listing for the Ethernet Adaptor then went to the bottom of the list but was still visible in pale grey with no checkmark in the box beside it. Then I went to the Keychain access but there was no password listed there for the stick so I didn't do anything there. Then I rebooted. Then I went back to Sys Pref - Network - Show Network Port Configs and then I rechecked the box beside Ethernet Adaptor and dragged it back to the top of the list. Then my Location was at Automatic, I am not sure if I made it go there or if it had automatically gone there - prior to this it was at a separate location I had made for my wireless stick, with the DNS Servers that BDAqua had given me in a prior thread. So now I am functioning on the Automatic Location, so what is happening is that it is taking a long time to find the Internet after rebooting and then it is not using the DNS Servers from the previous wireless stick location, but that DNS Server box is now blank. I have rebooted a couple of times and this system seems to be working for me so I will stick with it and just not turn off my computer very often. Whether or not the location I had made specifically for my wireless stick will ever work again I don't know and don't want to spend hours more agony trying to find out. So I am satisfied with this solution.

New update erased my entire ipod and it changed my itunes. how do i get all pps and things back?

I got a new update last night foe my ipod touch and when it was completed I clicked on the backup for information. It erased all of my apps, my music, my photos, everything is gone. Can I use my itunes to fix this issue at all??

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Really no way to insert a page without destroying entire document's layout?

This is a problem I've had since the last version of Pages, and I'm shocked it's not yet fixed. Please someone tell me I'm wrong.
I have a 20-page document, with a lot of floated images. Now I want to insert a page between pages 1 and 2. If I do this, the text all moves, but all the images stay in place, completely destroying 20 pages worth of layout, requiring me to fix it all one by one. This seems insane.
Is there really no way to do this properly? It's a pretty huge weakness that you can't use floating images if you ever want to modify the document in the future.

There are essentially 3 different ways that a graphic can be placed on a page: 1) inline, which is basically treating a picture as a very large letter. The graphic moves as the text is edited but tends to leave massive line breaks. 2) floating, which lets the picture sit underneath or on top of the text. This has the drawback, as you note, of not moving with the text. 3) anchored, which combines the advantages of the first two. The graphic floats on top of the page (or underneath the text) but the anchor lets it move with the text.
Pages has the first two modes but not the third. The only solution, if you want to call it that, is to edit the text thoroughly and add graphics only once you are satisfied your copy isn't going to be changed. (I know, for some of us, the text can change frequently while the basic layout stays the same - I have a couple brochures like that.) My second suggestion would be to find logical breaks so that you don't have 20 pages to redo when your edit totally blows your layout to smithereens. Meanwhile, use feedback to request this feature.
