Caveman Method for the Zen Micro:

What is the best way to go about banging my Zen Micro with the least of external damage, but maximum work-a-bility?
I've tried my marble countertop and a ladder. I bang my Zen Micro on the side...

hold it in your hand firmly, and hit your hand against something
it reduces shock and physical damage, but still has a good enough effect to free up the hard dri've

• What was the last firmware version for the Zen Micro before M

I would like to know what was the last firmware version for the Zen Micro before the MTP firmware?
Please make sure you are 00% on this.
Thankyou.

I think it does, but I'm not sure; since I wanted MTP, I only used .x firmware long enough to save the original Creative test files (with MediaSource, not ZMME) before upgrading to 2.x. And yes, I had to li've with 2..02's shorter battery life until 2.20.05 came out.
May I ask why you want to go back to .x firmware? The only thing that will get you is the ability to use it with Win98SE/2000/Me--but only if you can install Creative drivers on every PC you use it with. MTP requires WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0, but doesn't need any Creative software at all to work. (Microsoft has made an MTP driver for Win98SE/2000/Me, but it requires customization and may not be supported by other software. I'm tinkering a bit with the customization part right now.)
There are other pitfalls in changing Micro firmware families, in either direction--you'll lose all the files on your Micro, you'll have to install a different ZMME (and I've heard non-MTP ZMME isn't quite as full-featured as MTP ZMME), and you'll need a new plug-in for MediaSource to work.

• Will there be any new player software upgrades for the Zen Micro-all those in the know please re

The only thing that I like about the ipod and itunes is the fade out of the current song and the fade in of the new song, which works well in all playing modes.
Thanks
Matt

I'm not 'in the know', but my suspicion is that we are all done for the Zen Micro now. There aren't any bugs left in the firmware, and generally the Micro does all it was supposed to do. The market is moving away from the 5gig(ish) hard dri've players (being replaced by high capacity flash), which means the micro is running to the end of its life.
Thats not really a bad thing, the Micro is stable, and we have some new features (Audible) that we didn't have when purchased. I think that is about all we can hope for....

• Other uses for the zen micro H

I read about people removing the hard dri've from the zen micro -and using it in their digital slr cameras that can take CF micro dri'ves...
is this possible? could you remove the hard dri've - and put it into a CF slot on a notebook and have it show up as a 5gb dri've?

Here's the answer i guess
From:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/microdri've.html
A Note From Seagate
"The Seagate hard dri've inside these players was manufactured and qualified for use specifically in these music player applications. It is not designed to be removed from the music player, and removing the dri've voids the warranty on the music player and on the hard dri've.
Also important to note: because these dri'ves weren't designed or tested for uses external to the music players, they may not operate correctly (either short-term or long-term) in other applications.
To date, Seagate has not completed the design and testing of, and has not made available, a -inch hard dri've for use by consumers in CompactFlash slots.
Seagate is working on a consumer version of its -inch CompactFlash Type II hard dri've, the "Seagate CompactFlash Photo Hard Dri've," that will be priced very attracti'vely for the mainstream photography market. Seagate announced this dri've in June 2004. We'll have more news regarding a launch date later in the holiday season.
Best to you and to everyone at Steve's,"

• I have to press hard for the zen micro to resp

Me and my brother both have a zen micro and on mine i have to press realy hard for it to do anything and my brothers is nothing like this even though we have the same sensitivity setting. Thanks in advanceMike

It's almost definatly a faulty player. Try a firmware update. Go into rescue mode by removing the battery and while replacing the battery holding the power switch in the on position. From there select Reload Firmware via USB. Be sure to download the firmware from the Creative site and I'd suggest using v.0.03.
If this doesn't resolve the issues than contact Creative Support or go back to the store for a return/replacement. The touchpad doesn't rely on pressure per se for movement detection so pressing really hard on the pad isn't something that is normal.

• Is PLAYFORSURE for the ZEN MICRO a better choice than Creative Mediascour

Should i use the firmware, just to update bugs, or the 2 firmware, with playforsure. i am very nai've when it comes tto playforsure. I donno, what should i do?

my best advice is to research playforsure, do you want its features, and do you have a compatable system, if not then its probably not worth it.
not saying you are, but if you are under the impression that play for sure is the more up-to date firmware then you are mistaken as the two have such different features that they were updated simultaniously. and correct me if im wrong but it was the v firmware that was stable/ better for bugs than the v2 firmware. but its a personal choice. there is pleantly of info out there so have a read, see if its for you and that you are cumfortable changing the firmware.

• Arm strap for the Zen Mic

I'd like to take my Micro to the gym, but I need an arm strap because I'm afraid of bumping the unit with a weight if I were to clip it to my waist.
Could anyone recommend a good arm band/strap that will fit the player snugly? Anything specifically made for the zen micro (5gb) would be a plus.
Thanks!
p.s. I won't be able to check this board too often. If you have a suggestion and would be so kind, please e-mail me at [email protected]][email protected]. Thanks again.

I got one of these
http://www.tunebelt.com/ab4
which is pretty good and very affordable. Good service from them as well!
As it says it was intended for ipodmini but also fits the Zen Micro.

• External Charger For the Zen Mic

will there be an external charger for the Zen Micro? So you can always have a juiced up battery ready and willing to go? =)

I think it's a huge inefficiency to require that the player be out of commission during the battery charging.
An optional external charger would remedy this problem and would make having a second battery the seamless way to have constant connectivity.
As it stands, you can't use the player for 3+ hours while it's charging.
These proprietary batteries that are only chargeable via Creative products are confining and non-user-friendly.
An optional external charger would make this player much more usable.
PS - otherwise - I LOVE IT!!!

• Firmware Maddness for the Zen Mic

Is it just me or is this firmware business out of control for the Zen Micro?
Having a .0 series and a 2.0 series at the same time is creating way too much confusion!
Aren't MP3 players supposed to be replacing portable CD Players and Cassette Players? Well the coolness factor is there, but the user experience has some serious room for improvment.
The common person would have no clue what the heck to do with all these firmware downloads. Even the descriptions of the firmware would be very confusing for most people getting into MP3 players for the first time. I am very happy with my Zen Micro and am using Windows Media Player as my Music Manager without any problems. I guess I am supposed to wait for the new 2..02 beta to get "un-betad" instead of downloading the new .02.05 but that's just a guess at this point. There are a ton of MP3 players out there with more features and a lower price than iPods, but they still don't come close to outselling it. That's because its the ease of use, not necessarily the features that separates iPods from the rest of the pack. Hey Creative, dummy these things down and watch your sales go up! You will reach a whole new set of customers if you do!

I agree, I'd like to see creatives mp3 players and napsters service to be a profitiable and long-lasting business because I think this way of finding and listening to music is wonderful.. but the firmware updates/formatting the dri've/and all this other technical stuff is a little bit much for the average person to deal with. Also the newest non-MTP version has a bunch of new fixes which the newest MTP version apparently doesn't even have but they both came out the same day or so? I dont understand that.

• How long is the warranty for the Zen Mic

Can anyone tell me how long the warranty is for the Zen Micro? Thanks!

SSR,
The year/90 days warranty is our standard for PDE devices to my knowledge. It does happen to be the warranty in the US; however some countries have laws requiring different warranty lengths. We don't do any warranties on current PDE products that are less than this to my knowledge.

• The Zen Micro Headphone Jack Problem Thr

First of all please don't post comments only and only post if you have a problem. Treat this thread like the "Experience with your Creative Player." I want to see how far this thread can go and to see if this is a big problem. Please be respectful and honest about this issue. This is only for the Zen Micro right now since it's the one player that most of users here have issues with. Who knows that someday Creative might look into this or to really see if there really is a problem or not.
If you have friends or anyone else you know who owns a Zen Micro and has this problem, tell them to join the forums and post here, try not to post for them unless they are part of your family. Like if you were trying to do this for your son or daughter.
If you own more than one Zen Micro and that they have the same problem, try to list them seperately. If you just got your player fixed or RMA'ed, made a post here in the past, then all of sudden it breaks again. Please post again with the same format. I want to make sure that each post is for one Zen Micro. Though the moderators are the only exceptions to this.
If any of you think that this thread needs to be edited in any way, please send me a Private Message so I can make the changes.

3) How long you owned the player?
4) Explain exactly what happened when the problem occured?
5) Did you fix or solve the problem? If not, say so. If yes did you RMA by warranty? Fix it yourself?
6) If you did get a replacement from Creative, is this your second player? Third? Fourth? Fifth?
7) Your own comments/opinions to the whole issue and anything else you want to add. Like RMA service was bad or it was great.
This is my example and only an example.
) 5GB
2) Bought New at Buy.com
3) Since March '05 or about 0 months
4) I was just listening to some music then all of a sudden, the right side of my headphones just had no sound coming out. I tried other headphones and it had the same issue. This happened at around November of '05.5) Yes. Got an RMA from Creative. Took about two weeks and I ended up getting a replacement. Cost me $25 not including shipping
6) Happened on my first player. The replacement will be my second one.7) I think Creative did an awesome job in taking in my player even though I couldn't prove that my warranty was valid. Customer service was excellent. Thanks Creative!

) 5 gig
2) New from www.ecost.com
3) I got it for Christmas
4) Eventually the sound started to get kinda messed up, and only come out of one ear. i was able to fix it by moving the plug, but that only worked for a week or so.
5) I RMAed the player, although I still have not gotten a replacement, Creative recieved my player 7 days ago.
6) No replacement recieved as of now
7) I think Creative needs to address this problem not just by having people RMA their players, but rather by changing the way the micro is designed. I am also disappointed by the whole RMA process. The status page is rarely updated, my RMA has taken 2 days longer than it should have, and there is a lack of information as to whom I need to contact about this. I'm a big fan of Creative's mp3 players, but this may be my last purchase from them. their costumer service is really lacking it seems. If my replacement Micro (if I ever get it) breaks, I most likely will try another brand.

• Just 5 questions about the Zen Micro Ph

HiJust 5 Q's about that player which i hope i get clear answers 4 'emcan i buy the charger designed for the original Zen Micro 2 be used with this player? if not, is there an additional charger i can buy ?2) How much time it takes the player 2 charge from the USB port and how much does it take in case of using a charger?3) Can i simply plug the player in my PC's USB and boot up windows XP 2 see the player simply as an additional dri've without the need of any special drivers or programs so that i transfer files between my PC and the player with simple drag and dropping4) Can i transfer non-media files (books - programs...etc) using the same method in question 3 without having 2 set up first a dedicated space on the player 4 receiving such files (<--- This is the way which has 2 be done with the old Zen Micros)5) Any dedicated volume control on it yet or it still misses it like old Zen Micros ?THANKS A LOT

Hi Catherina - thx 4 the reply but yr answer implies that the old Zen Micro can be seen in windows explorer directly as an additonal dri've and this contradicts all the reviews i have read about that in order to transfer non-media files to the player, i have 2 either use the bundled program "Zen Media Explorer" or the firmware itself (in case i am not allowed 2 install software on some computer i wanna transfer files from or to) but i was speaking about plugging the player simply in the USB to be detected by XP, assigned to it a dri've letter and then i can start copying files from/to it right away without any additional extra software installed or anything i must configure on the player itself. IMHO, this is how the MP3 players should behave 4 extra simplicity and ease of use
SUGGESTION: can u plz make video clips showing how 2 use the player in all aspects. I have seen that with the iri'ver players where some people (i am not sure if those people are the guys @ iri'ver themselves or just some fans) have posted numerous video clips showing the iri'ver player in all aspects so the end user like me feel like he is using the player in his hands even if he/she hasn't purchased it yet - something that will be very effecti've on people's decision purchase. Wish to see video clips showing all aspects of the Zen Micro player and may be other players
