CC 2014 smart object selection crash

Windows 7 64
24 Mb Ram on Xeon hex core
GFX : Geforce 680 - latest driver
Wacom Intuos 3 - latest driver
Image: 16 bit PSD 19x13 inches @240 dpi (456 MB)
When selecting an area in a smart object and copying it to a new layer, Photoshop CC 2014 displays the dialogue that it has stopped working.
The faulting module is Photoshop.exe version 15.0.0.58  Exception code: 0xc0000005.
Photoshop CC does not crash when carying out the same procedure.
UPDATE:  in fact, it's crashing on pretty much every function in 16 Bit mode.  I've tried several images to ensure that the original occurrence wasn't with a corrupted image.
All suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

This issue has not resolved itself.  Photoshop CC 2014.1.0 is now so unstable that I cannot use it.
The "Photoshop has stopped working" dialogue seems to be invoked when selecting areas .  I think my original post observation that it was a smart object error was wrong.  It seems to be more general.
The vertical red lines appear when reversing the history state.  I have updated the nVidia GTX 680 driver to 340.52 and changed the graphics processor settings from "advanced" to "normal"
Files are 16 bit RGB, 300 MB.
Here is the Windows crash data

  • Smart Object Selection

Why does making a selection inside of a smart object (say with the rectangular marquis tool) disable Free Transform?

There seems to be an inconsistency in the interface because when other targets which can only be entirely transformed are accompanied by a selection, there is no prevention of Free Transform. Even a pair of SO can be transformed when there is a selection.

  • Smart Object Selection Highlight

Anyone know how to disable border highlighting when selecting a smart object in the layers panel?  Designing pixel-to-pixel is cumbersome when the highlight appears and temporarily extends the size of the shape by 1 px.  It's just a bit of a nuissance.

Are you talking about the path showing for a shape layer?
You can't disable it by default.  That's what we southern boys sometimes like to call a "design shortcoming".
Edit:  Oops, it seems I neglected to read Brett's comment, just above.  I may have been wrong about this.
Nah, on second thought it comes back on and sticks.  It's definitely a design shortcoming.
You can hide it after you've selected the layer to work on the shape by clicking the path icon in the Properties panel.

  • Rasterizing smart objects, 3 methods?

Hi folks. There are 3 ways to rasterize a smart object.
With the smart object selected in the layers palette:
    1) Layer > Rasterize > Layer
    2) Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object
    3) Layer > Smart Objects > Rasterize
There is of course a 4th possibility directly from the layers palette, which - being another location - is justified, but 3 menu items ?
Question: Are the 3 menu items identical (CONCERNING smart objects! ... I know someone will try to point out that rasterize > layer is a more general case)? If no, what exactly is the difference? If yes, shouldn't the menu be more streamlined then (in CS3 in my case) ?

I personally see no problem in the multiple locations:
For the Rasterize-menu-item to display which kind of layer one is dealing with seems no bad idea.
And the Smart Object-menu-item not offering the option would seem strange.
But the result would indeed appear to be the same.
Anyway You could always turn them off under Edit – Menus.

  • Trying to crop layer, getting "Can't complete because smart object not editable" message

Using PSE v9 on a Mac
I have a layer with an image that I want to crop around an element on the image. I've selected the area and inversed, then hit delete (why isn't there just a 'Crop' command?) and am getting a message that says:
"Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable."
I'm not clear what a smart object is and whey they're not editable, and how I can make this editable, and how does that change the image.
    Thanks
    doug

You don't won't to crop the whole photo, just delete the area from the layer
    that you've selected?
    Two ways:
    1. Go to Layer>Simplify Layer before using delete.
    2. If you want to keep the smart object, select the area you want to keep, not
delete, then hit the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the layers panel.
A smart object is usefull for resizing an image layer over and over without losing
quality (the image doesn't pixelate like it does on a non smart object)
If your not planning on doing lots of resizing or transforming on the layer, then removing
the smart object by Layer>Simplify Layer won't make much difference.

  • Is it possible to export Vector Smart Objects as vector SVG files from Photoshop CC 2014?

I have Vector Smart Objects copied from Illustrator and pasted into Photoshop. I would like to export them as vector SVG files (using Generator or Extract Assets). I can add the .svg extension to the layer and actually export an SVG just fine. The problem is any SVG I have exported have all been raster images. It defeats the purpose of having that as an option as far as I'm concerned.
I remember watching and listening to keynotes and other speakers at Adobe MAX 2014 who said it was so powerful and amazing to create SVG files from Photoshop. If we're still exporting raster SVG files from Photoshop...that's not very impressive or exciting--especially since this era of modern web development benefits greatly from using vector SVG files.
I understand that Shape Layers can be exported as vector SVG files but that seems very limiting. I also realize that users can create some impressive vectors in Photoshop, but that is not optimal. Illustrator is a better tool for creating vectors and I normally use Photoshop and Illustrator side-by-side. I know that vector SVG files can be exported from Illustrator but that isn't as user friendly and convenient as utilizing Photoshop > Generator > Reflow.
My idea was to create my assets in Illustrator, paste them into Photoshop as Vector Smart Objects, set up my layout, and then use the Generator/Reflow method or Extract Assets to get a new web design started.
Maybe I misunderstood what the speakers at Adobe MAX had said. Perhaps it's just user error and I'm just missing something simple (it happens).
Photoshop CC 2014 notes the following under Help > System Info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 2014.2.2 20141204.r.310 2014/12/04:23:59:59 CL 994532  x64
    Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time.

Not quite the same, but have a look at the new Libraries feature that came with 2014.2.2  I just tried it, and dragging a vector object into a library I created in Photoshop, was there in Illustrator.  This happens without having to close and reopen Illustrator.  Just use the drop down at the top of the Libraries panel (in Illustrator) to find your custom, or job specific library.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 - Stack Mode Disabled - Load Image Into Stack Has No "Convert To Smart Object" Option

    Hi,
I have just installed Photoshop CC 2014.1 and I have "Stack Mode" command disabled.
Also, I have no option to convert layers into smart object  when I run "Load Image Into Stack" command.
Can you please tell me how to enable these features?
    Thank you very much.

The 512 MB are a minimum requirement, not some optional thing. Without it, 3D will never work.

  • PS CS5.1 crashes when using file open but not with bridge or "open as smart object"

I'm using a Mac with Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS5.1 Extended
When i try to open a file largen than ~50MB with double click in finder or with file>open in PS, the program loads the psd and shows it, then 2-3 seconds later PS crashes. If the psd is under ~50MB everything is fine.
If i open it with file>open as smart object or via the mini bridge, everything is fine, and i can work with it.
    How can this be fixed?

  • Illustrator CC crashing during Vector Smart Object save

I have a user who is running Adobe CC under Yosemite  on a new 5K iMac.
After a few weeks of no issues she is suddenly unable to open Vector Smart Objects from Photoshop into Illustrator and save them after editing.
Illustrator crashes as soon as she tries to save.

Do you mean that you are double clicking on placed smart object and you get the error. Is the smart object originally from Illustrator and does Illustrator open open?
Would help to know more detail about EXACTLY when your error happens and far you get. This way we can determine if you have a file association problem, memory problem, corrupt font/image problem.

  • Smart Object - Cropping on a Layer via Select- Inverse- Backspace

OK, I have learned that you can't "Crop" on a layer, but instead should use the Select->Inverse->Backspace procedure to essentially "crop" a photo.  But this procedure does not work on a Smart Object photo.
I have also found out that if you Simplify the Smart Object, the above cropping procedure works.
So now I need some help on understanding what I lose when I go from a Smart Object to a Simplified Object.  It appears that I can still resize, rotate, etc. the photo, so what am I missing.

Michel- I guess everything is not as good as I thought.  I guess I mis-read the "Copy to Layer" (cropped) image as still being a Smart Object (when my wife did it), but this morning when I repeated the procedure, I ended up with a Simplified cropped image.
So the effect is the same -- i.e. either way you end up with a Simplified cropped image (whether you do a Layer->Simplify Layer and then do a Select->Inverse->Backspace  OR  you merely outline the area you want cropped with the rectangle and then do a "Copy from Layer).
And even I can see if I want to do any significant resizing (enlarging that is), I need to be working with a Smart Object because the Simplified start pixilating very quickly when enlarged.
I also think I finally figured what the little boxes in the lower right corner of the Layer palette icon is -- it indicates Smart Object, right.  I didn't see that explained anywhere.  Also, more education is needed in the Help Documentation about Smart Objects.  Thanks for your initial response -- and these forums are life savers.

  • Smart objects open in Illustrator CC instead of CC 2014

I have designed a couple of items in Illustrator CC 2014 and pasted them as a smart object in Photoshop CC 2014. Yesterday, I did some editing to these smart objects files and all was working well, the Smart Object opened in Illustrator CC 2014. Today a different story, I opened the smart objects and they opened in illustrator CC not CC 2014, the version where they were created. Does anybody have any idea of what is going on? I will appreciate any help with this issue. I found a similar question but the solution was not helpful because my smart objects are associated with the latest version not in a previous version as the posting suggested was the problem.

    Hi Chris,
I didn't even thank you for answering my question. Thank you. Do you know how I could change/fix the issue I have with the SOs not opening in the right Illustrator version. I have designed the images in Illustrator CC2014 but when I open them from Photoshop, they open in Illustrator CC. Thanks.

  • CC 2014: are creation and editing of smart objects multiple cores cpu operations?

Creating and updating smart objects are mostly just saving and loading files - which is a pretty serial operation.
If you have a transform or filter applied to the smart object, then those steps will be accelerated as the transform or filter normally would be.
Chris that is interesting.  We were talking about Smart Objects reducing image size in RAM, and from what you are saying, creating a Smart Object saves it's details to hard drive.  Judging by the resulting image size as stated in the Status Bar, the Smart Object uses similar memory to an equivalent raster layer.   How does it work if the containing document has not yet been saved as a PSD?  I imagine that saving the PSD file must contain the Smart Object information?

  • Manually set height of selected objects / smart objects

This might be a dumb question, considering how many years I've been using Photoshop, but ....
I was lining up and resizing these smart objects, each on its own layer. Typically I simply layout a guide and drag it but I was wondering if there is a way to set an exact height? When you first drag an object you see the height adjusting as a percentage, but once done you see it at 100% if you click again. Just wondering if I could set an exact height numerically somewhere.

Thanks. You'd think after all these years I'd have known. Maybe I did at one time (getting old). When there are many ways to do a thing you sometimes 'work around' a gap in knowledge to 'just get it done' and forget to ask the question "is there an easier way".
