CC 3-Way: How to Limt Effect to a Limited Area?
What's the best way to have a filter (in this case the 3-way Color Corrector with the Limit Effect controls on) affect only a portion of the overall image -- let's say part of the lower right quadrant, where the boundary of that region can be also be "feathered", a la a selection in Photoshop?
Am having to apply the CC 3-way to a number of clips, in each case using the Limit Effect controls to isolate (and then change) a particular color. In some clips though, the matte I create works great for most of the image, but isn't quite right for one specific area. Adjusting the various Limit Effect controls to correct for that one area screws up the matte everywhere else.
If I add a second CC 3-way filter to take care of that one isolated region, I obviously want it to affect only that one isolated region. But am getting frustrated in my attempts to create a soft-edged matte to accomplish that without affecting all the other filters above and below in the stack.
I'm sure there's a way to do this, but can't seem to clear my brain enough to see what it would be.

Layer the footage and use the garbage matte to
isolate the area you want.
Just to clarify, is that the route I was actually starting to consider earlier (but then abandoned thinking there had to be a way to do it within the one track):
i.e.: Copy the clip's video up one track, do the matte + customized filter thing on the upper track, after which that isolated part of the image blocks out the identical but improperly filtered area below it.
I guess the only downside will be that when I adjust one of the other filters in the stack (changing the contrast or diffusion levels, for example), I'll have to remember to make the exact same change in the duplicated stack of filters one track up.
And should I also take from your suggestion of the two-track workflow that there is indeed no FCP equivalent to the Photoshop technique of making a selection, and then creating an adjustment layer which applies only to that selected area?

I've been wondering this for a while, but keep forgetting to post - Sometimes when creating a project, I'll add an "effect," such as a drop shadow, to a layer, but later decide to change it.
How do I undo that effect without undoing all the other actions that i have applied between when I initially applied the drop shadow, and when I decide to change it?
Is there a way to choose "no effect" in the Effects? If not, it would be helpful to have that option in this case.
Thanks for any help!Well, a layer style is not an effect. If you really mean layer styles (like the drop shadow you mentioned), just go to Layer>Layer Style>Clear Layer Style. That works any time, even after you've saved and closed the file.
Actual effects are actions, and you can only back out of those with the undo commands/undo history. Once you pass the number of history states you're saving, or once you close the image, that's it. No going back. -

How 3D glasses effect is implemented (discuss in terms of programming)

I want to know how 3D glasses effect is implemented interms of programatically. like , when we apply this effect to some composition....
1. Is there two cameras created for each view (left and right) in the composition
2. Is there two files needed for testing 3D glasses
3. How can we get the two image's pixel data or pixel information from AE SDK
4. What happen when we set different 3D view (stereo pair, red Green LR, red Blue LR ..etc)
5. What happen when we change convergence offset
6. Is there any relation between convergence offset and camera(s)
and so on. Lets say, if we have to develop this effect, then how can we do it or how can we implement it. Please discuss.ehem...
the 3D glasses effect merely merges two pre-exsiting images into one image, in one of the various methods of presenting a 3D image to the viewer.
by pre-existing i mean that it's ENTIRELY up to the user to create the two separate images.
it doesn't create any cameras, nor does it create a 3D depth to a single image.
the different setting on the 3D glasses effect are merely a choice of a technical way of displaying 3D.
be it anaglyph, side by side or interlacing.
the convergence offset changes the distance between the "eyes", and is used to adjust ill-created image pairs.
there is a relation between camera and the convergence offset.
if you didn't do the job correctly with the cameras, then you compensate with the offset.
if you wish to create a "real" 3D-izer effect, you would need to render the comp from two different cameras.

even doing that doesn't solve the entire problem, as some elements in the comp come from external sources, and are ready made for one camera and not the other. (such as rendered elements from 3D)
in such a case you'll need two separate comps, each containing the correct source footage, and not just one comp with two different cameras.
to read the image data from any layer in the comp you should use a layer param along with PF_CHECKOUT_PARAM.
that will give you the two pre-existing images.
so now you could just the use existing 3D glasses effect... -
How do I effectively join the Macs to the AD?
Hi. First, I must qualify that I am NOT a network individual. Some of the research I've done, I've managed to follow, but I don't have the technical know-how to fully understand it all. I desparately need help, please.
I work in a medium-sized environment, about 50 PCs and we employ Windows Server 2003. I've been charged with making 10 or so Macs work in Active Directory. Our Mac users constantly run into expiring netword passwords every 30 days (extending this is not an option because of the nature of the work).
How do I effectively join the Macs to the AD and allow changes to network passwords from the Mac? So far, for every Mac users, I've used SMB to connect to server files/folders. But when the users' password expires, they are 1) not notified that their passwords are expiring and 2) are not able to change their passwords from their Macs when their passwords expires. I've tried binding my Mac to the AD and used a free software called ADMon to monitor my own expiring network password. And that's proving useless because it's monitoring the local password for the Mac instead of the network password.
Mac users are mostly on OS Lion, one Mac user on Snow Leopard.
I would really appreciate any help/advice you can provide.

The digitization of data has introduced a complexity to our interactions with it that we continue to struggle with. "Picture" and "Photo" now mean different things in different contexts. In this case (and in general) defining our terms clearly is the first step towards understanding what we are trying to do. Understanding is the path that allows us to do it.
All pedantic, but please stick with me here .
You record a set of instantaneous data with a camera.
That data is processed by your camera and saved to a file.
The file format is usually either RAW or JPG.
You transfer those files to your computer, and you import them into the program Aperture (often in one operation).
From each camera-file imported, Aperture creates a record in its database (called, imho unhelpfully, a Library) and an Image that you see in the Aperture Browser and Viewer.
Aperture links the Image and the imported file.
The imported file is called, within Aperture, an Original.
Every Image has an Original.
The Image is not the Original. The Image is what you see in Aperture.
The Original is a file that is stored on your computer.
You can make changes to an Image.
Aperture calls these changes Adjustments.
Adjustments are saved to another file attached to the record in the database. Let's call this file the Changes File.
Aperture uses these two files attached to the record in the database to create the Image.
Image = Original + Changes File.
The Image is not a file.
Because the Image is not a file, it cannot be shared with other programs. It exists only inside of Aperture.
In order to share an Image with another program, you must first create a file of the Image.
You do this by exporting Images ("File ▹ Export ▹ Version" is the command in Aperture; should be, imho, "File ▹ Export ▹ Image").
You may ask, "Why all the complexity? Why doesn't Aperture save Images as files?" The answer is simple: Images can require less — and in many cases very very much less — storage space than files of Images. Rather than save a full-size file for every Image, Aperture saves only instructions on how to make that full-size file. The gain in storage efficiency is huge. The trade-off is that although your Images are always available to be made into share-able files, you must create those files when needed (which you do by exporting selected Images).

No, there is not. Images exist only in Aperture, and are not accessible for use in other programs. You must create, for each Image in your Aperture Library, a new file outside of your Aperture Library in order to use it with another program.
Aperture does allow you to create and save within your Library share-able files of your Images. These files are called Previews. You specify the file parameters in Aperture Preferences on the Previews tab. These files are available to other programs via the OS X Media Browser. These files are what you get when you drag selected Images out of the Aperture program and drop them on another program or on your desktop (which is part of the Finder).

No, you cannot find out where the computer has been. Find My Mac only shows you were the computer is right now if it is online.
I strongly recommend you change all your internet passwords immediately, notify the police (do not try to recover your MBA yourself), and your insurance company so you can get reimbursed and buy a new Mac. Once you have done all this go back to Find My Mac and click the "Erase" button.
