CC: Aren't Filter Gallery, Brush Strokes & Artistic suppose to be 16-bit now?

Dear Forum:
I have used Photoshop since Version 2. I at long last downloaded a trial of CC (I currently use CS6) in the hopes that Filter Gallery, Artistic and Brush Strokes now support 16-bit processing. I even downloaded the instruction manual for CC, and it said it was supported. But alas, it is not working. Is this because I am on a trial vesion or did these features not get flushed out as promised? All versions of the above work in 8-bit mode.
Pete

Hi Curt!
Thanks for your reply. I have been waiting since Version 7 for Brush Strokes--Angled Strokes to be 16 bit---really need it. Any hope that it will happen SOON? My pimary reason for upgrading to CC.
I also noticed that Smart Blur is not up and running yet.
I like having Camera RAW as a filter--helpful.

  • Should the "filter gallery" filters be displayed in CS5 64 bit filter menu?

I would swear I had the "filter gallery" filters available (artistic, brush strokes, sketch...) from CS5 64 bit. But tonight I realised I can only see them in CS5 32 bit, not in the 64 bit version. Is this normal?
Please note I'm *not* talking about them being grayed out due to the image being in 16 bit. It's just that they do not appear on the menu as they do in the 32 bit version. I've tried copying the filter gallery.8bf file from 32 version folder to 64 one, but it doesn't work.
This is how my filter menu looks on each CS5 version (32 bit/64 bit):
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks, I was pretty sure they should be there, but since I don't use them often, I was in doubt.
I can't think of anything I did to remove the filter gallery - I'm really intrigued about how could it disappear (?). I supposed the 32 and 64 bit version of the 8bf file would be different, but wanted to give it a try just in case...
After wasting some time trying to find the 64 bit "filter gallery.8bf" online, I've decided to just reinstall CS5 and yes, just as you say, now the filters are there. It's a good thing that reinstalling CS5 somehow keeps intact your preferences, workspace and 3rd party plugins! I just had to run the Adobe updater and everything's back to normal.
Thanks for confirming this was an issue! Have a great day.

  • Using "Filters" how can I activate Artistic, Brush Strokes, Texture, etc.

Please help.  I am a novice at using PS.
I want to change some photos to give it a true impressionistic, watercolor, neon-like look.  When I scroll down the Filter menu, how do I activate "Artistic, Brush Strokes, Texture, etc."?  They are grey and inactive.
Am I going about this in a wrong way?  Is there another tool I can use?  Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

Are you saying there is no way to do it with a 16-bit image?  I would also like to use these effects on a certain image, particular the gun shown in this product.  I want to make it look a lot more attractive, but I too have not been able to utilize these important Photoshop effects.  There has to be a way to do this, there's always a way in the world of computers.

  • Scripting brush strokes on smart filter mask

Hi guys, I am a complete newbie to all this so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
I am having problems when trying to record brush strokes on a smart filter mask using script listener. Is this possible? Is there some trick to it?
    Cheers,
    Philip

I can be wrong, but I remember somewhere on ps-script Xbytor writing about it.
ScriptingListener can't record brush strokes - afaik, according to Chris Cox, this would clog the log - but there's an "Allow tool recording" option in the Actions palette that should do the trick.
A workaround could be to record the brush into an Action, then parse the action with XTools and grab the raw data stream from the generated JS. Never attempted to try, but in principle should work.

  • How do i add filter to just brush strokes and paint fill not pencil.

Sorry it is kind of hard to explain in the description.
What i want to know is if i can pretty much just select the brush strokes and paint fill on a layer and have the pencil lines left alone.
I want to filter, then blur the brush strokes and paint fill on the layer but keep the pencil lines sharp, i have been doing paint fill and brush stroked on a different layer than the pencil lines but this takes ages because i have to draw the picture out twice everytime using the brush strokes to go along the pencil lines so i can fill them in with color, if i could blur them on same layer without effecting pencil lines then i could just fill the pencil lines with paint bucket instead of redarwing the lines with brush tool if this makes sence.
Here is a picture to show what im trying to achieve
The pencil lines are on a different layer to brush strokes

if you convert to a movieclip (right click>convert to symbol>movieclip) whatever you want to filter, you can filter it independent of other objects.

  • Why is the filter gallery greyed out in cs6 student teacher edition

I have the teacher student edition of cs6 and can not access filter gallery and thus can not find artistic filter  I used to have the full edition cs4 and did have artistic brushes and filter gallery was not an issue .

Working in 16bit is especially advantageous when one does extreme color/brightness corrections that might result in banding in 8bit.
But the increased file size may make some files unwieldy in 16bit.
Edit: And as you have noticed not all features work in 16bit.

  • WHY DON'T YOU AT LEAST IMPROVE THOSE BRUSH STROKES?!

I'm a professional digital artist-illustrator for about 7 years now. using photoshop since early years of my career. CS2, CS4, CS5.. on more than several mashines, top line HP workstations and EliteBook.
and one thing that bothers me and most of my colleagues is the quality of the brush strokes that PS provides.
why don't you improve em for christsake?!?
I must admit, this is a software issue, not mashine. neither the resolution, some options or tablet series has anything to do with this.. and it's especially visible on thicker strokes.
we work on intuos3, intuos4, intuos5, apple, win and whatnot. ant it's most obvious that the brush lines are as ugly as hell in this program entirely through all series.
when it comes to non-vector lineart, thats' basically why most of the artists/designers go for other progams, such as paint tool sai, sketchbook pro, manga studio and etc, and do the effects/coloring only in PS.
here's an ex. how the brush lines end. + if you work slower/move your pen more precise they go even worse!
I won't go further, like talking about the LAG with mixer brtushes and etc. most of the CG forums and communities are allready full of those discussions. you cannot even compete on this issue with other products.
that might be also a solution to rise your sales around the globe. cos now - why to buy a <1200$ worth PS program in europe when you'll probably end up mainly using paint tool sai or sketchbook pro for around 90$ and go for GIMP (free software) for effects.

I can understand a certain level of frustration, PAUZAK, but really?  Are you a part of the same universe I'm in?
Your answer seems defensive; I'm just trying to help.
    Points answered:
    >then why other products managed to make it work?
I was only commenting on the points made in the thread YOU linked to.  Apparently at least some people see the shoelace thing in the Wacom control panel.  Given that evidence, which I doubt was manufactured, your pretense seems to need questioning.  I suppose it's possible (actually, a certainty) that some products send different commands to the drivers than others, and that the drivers are doing things wrong only under some conditions.  That's why I asked whether the Smoothing setting affected your setup.
    >just like this forum.. can't make a reply like in other normal forums, or edit anything
I'm having no problems replying, or editing using any of the major browsers, including Firefox.  I can't edit posts on an iPhone or iPad (not allowed to even try), but if you're using an actual computer and you can't even make the forum work, you have problems on your system.
    >adobe is. cannot make the most simple things to work right and not LAG
Some operations in Photoshop are complex and when done with big brushes and all kinds of stuff (fuzzy edges, mixing, etc.) turned on they slow down, but with reasonable sized brushes I've been able to paint stuff, and I certainly don't have the world's fastest computer by today's standards.  And even so, I'm not sure that's a situation where it's not working right per se...  Maybe just one where a better computer is needed to paint with really big brushes and all the fancy stuff turned on.  That *could* be a better computer than any invented yet, but that's okay - see next year's lineup...
    >looks like the staff is obviously looking somewhere else
Wow, and you posted that *right* after one of the senior Photoshop scientist/engineers at Adobe responded specifically to you.  When's the last time an engineer from any other big software company responded to you?
    >Photoshop is still a huge and expencive disappointment so far. ask any pro
Yeah, all the pros just avoid Photoshop.  That's why Adobe is doing so poorly as a business.  They can hardly sell any copies at all!
PAUZAK, I'll go out on a limb and say making things up and trolling for shock value and blaming the world for your own problems probably aren't going to help you reach a solution.

  • Brush strokes become jagged after a few seconds

I've tried just about everything to narrow down and eliminate this problem, with no luck.
When I first start PS and paint a line with a simple hard round brush, it's nice and smooth. After about 15 seconds (or 4-5 lines), the lines become jagged. They're not pixely - it's more like what happens if you have smoothing turned off. The effect is more pronounced when I paint zoomed out, as if the input data is constrained to the zoomed out pixel size.
This is not a tablet problem - it happens with the mouse as well.
It does not happen with the lasso selection tool, so it seems limited to the brush tool.
Here's an image showing a series of brushstrokes, going from left to right.  You can see how the stroke quality degrades from the first stroke (on the left) which is nice and smooth, to the strokes on the right which are jagged.  You need to view the image at 100% to see what's happening clearly.
The fact that this problem doesn't appear when I first start the program, then creeps in, is really perplexing!  Once it starts it never goes away.

What does your system look like.  To tell you the truth I don't seem to be having any of the problems you are having with the mouse or Wacom pen.    I don't like installing Plug-in I have no intention of using.  Particulart Photoshop Plug-in for I keep plug-ins outside any Adobe folder and plug-installers a tend to install the plug-in in every version of Photoshop they find installed.  I just download a trial of LN and after it installed I removed all the plug-in it installed into different version of Photoshop one my system.  I copies the 32bit and 64Bit plug-ins into my Photoshop plug-ins trees.  My windows workstation is good but not top of the line good.  I do not see the jitter you seem to be getting with or without the plug-in enabled,  I'm no artiest all I can do is scribble fast and slow,  I do not see bad jitter. Here is what my system looks like and what I see when I scribble fast and slow.

  • CS5 Filter Gallery is Disabled

I work on a 64 bit Windows 7 environment. CS5 Filter Gallery along with some other contents (such as artistic) are greyed out. How do I enable them?

    Misunderstandings?
It sounds like you're thinking uninformed users are just picking deep data formats by accident (or by the "if 8 is good then 16 is better" school of thought), then can't understand why their filters don't work, so the solution is just to advise them to work at 8 bits/channel and all will be great.  That just seems wrong, because 16 IS better!  In this day and age of powerful computers and output devices with ever more capability, advising people to use 8 bits can lead to to posterized colors and other problems in their artwork where none need exist!  Who, if not a creative person, will tweak and retweak their pixels until they're just right.  Imagine all that accumulated round-off error...
Isn't your focus with Photoshop full version supposed to be on high-end image editing?  Best possible results?
Perhaps you believe there are two (non-overlapping) types of people...  Type A likes quality and Type B is creative and paints sloppy pictures, and never the twain shall meet?
Hate to burst your bubble, but I BOTH care about quality and get creative.
Some time ago I tried to use the Glowing Edges filter in a general purpose action - and learned that it only works on 8 bit data - so I had to do backflips and ultimately switch to the Find Edges filter, which for some reason you DID choose to update to handle deeper data. It would have been easier if I could just have kept using Glowing Edges, and I won't forget that your choice to save a little money cost me more in development.
Not long ago I chose to paint over a photo with the Mixer Brush in 16 bits/channel mode, and Photoshop was fast enough on my machine to support that choice.  But when I chose to add a few effects to some parts of the image I had to make a copy of the document, switch to 8 bits, and do the job.  Doable, but a bit of a concentration breaker, and the results were, of course, somewhat limited in quality.
I think a lot of people just accept that things (don't) work as they are and learn to avoid trying them.  Does that mean that the product is right?
Do you have telemetry telling you what parts of Photoshop people actually DO use?  If not, perhaps you might consider implementing some.  But alas, that opens the possibility of abusing the results (as Microsoft does).  Solid leadership is what's needed.  Hey, SOMEONE thought all those 8 bit filters were useful and put them in Photoshop in the first place!
I guess by now you can see that I'll never buy the "users haven't beaten down our doors for it so we're not bothering to update the old filters" school of thought.  But I'll concede that I must be alone in this, because few others ever chime in on these discussions.

  • Add texture brush strokes without altering color??

I want to paint texture into an image without adding or changing color.
The best way to explain my goal is to visit this website with very fine work by Mark Wainer.
    http://markwainer.com/Artist.asp?ArtistID=32140&Akey=88KMSY3K
    My own website is www.mdiimaging.com
He has used Buzz, as have I, to change photos into watercolor like images, now defunct and taken over by Topaz software, who now market Simplify in place of BUZZ.
After running the filter, he has added brush strokes to add texture without altering any color—just adding a texture looking like impasto or thick brush strokes.
I have searched everywhere and view lots of video but cannot find a technique to get the result I want.
I am sure there is way to do this, probably with brushes in CS6 and am frustrated with my being unable to find or create a way to achieve this effect.
    Can you help??
Maybe you have a tutorial or video that can teach me, or you could direct me to a different source that can help
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

    Experiment with Mixer Brush Tool.

  • Brush strokes show in history but not reflected on mask

I have CS4 Extended, Dell Precision M0, WinXP 64bit and 20GB of Ram (overkill I know). This issue happens most often in the 32bit version of PS which I need to use for certain filters. It also happens in the 64bit version but takes longer to manifest itself.
When I apply a filter to a duplicate layer and then add a layer mask OR of I add an adjustment layer and try to fine tune the effect by painting on the mask, the brush strokes show up in history but they have no affect on the mask. It typically happens mostly on very large files such as those from my 5DMKII but also happens if I've added several layers and masks to smaller files.
As a workaround, I can make selections and fill the area on the mask with black and it works. This is time consuming as you can imagine.
The brush problem is only related to masks. I can create a new layer, for instance, and paint on it with black or any color.
I've also had this issue when trying to use the spot removal tool or when cloning. Again...very large files.
I've entered every imaginable query and haven't had any luck! I'm hoping someone here has a clue.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I sure wish it were that simple but no....that is not the problem. I'm an advanced PS user and know the workings of a computer well. I've been through every imagineable possibility and now am wondering if my video card isn't up to the task of redrawing the brush strokes on huge files. I'm grasping at straws.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Problem with filter gallery

My filter gallery is not running anymore. Re-installed Photoshop but didn't work. What can I do?

    1. The Artistic Gallery will not show as an option in filters until you change it in the preferences dialogue box. Photoshop>File>Preferences>Plugins - show all Gallery Names
    2. Artistic filters will only work on 8 bit images - not 16 or 32, so save your original as a jpeg or some other 8 bit format. If your option is ghosted it is because the filter cannot be used  on your images bit size.

  • Why is the filter gallery greyed out in Photoshop CC?

I just installed PS CC and want to try some artistic filters but the Filter Gallery option is greyed out. How do I access the filter gallery?

Is the image mode set to 8 bits/channel?

  • Filter Gallery in CS5 diasabled

Filter Gallery as well as some other contents (such as Artistic) are greyed out in CS5. How do I enable it?

What color mode is your document?
Those filters work best if your color mode is RGB color and 8 bits/channel: Image>Mode.

  • Filter gallery question

Is there a way to reset the filter gallery to the original settings (detail, stroke, brightness, etc.)? Not the 'last used' setting, but the ones original to the program, without having to reset ALL the settings in photoshop?
    thanks!

    Couldnt You under
Users  »Your User«  Library  Preferences  Adobe  Plugins  Adobe Filter Gallery CS3  Photoshop
delete »Adobe Filter Gallery CS3 Prefs« and those prefs that You want reset and then quit and start Photoshop anew? (To be on the safe side dont empty the trash right away though.)
