CC LR5 Question

I have the latest versions of LR5 on two Windows computers with saved and cataloged images . If I buy Creative Cloud, do I have to download the CC version of LR5 to my desktop and then how do I then access those images or are they automatically imported?

there is no technical difference in the LR versions whatsoever. This is merely a licensing thing.

  • 2 LR5 questions...

I'm new to LR, playing around right now to get familiar and establish a good workflow.  Have been watching some video tutorials that have been really helpful but have a couple of newbie questions that I'm not readily finding?
    1.  I've created a collection with several photos that I've edited in LR but don't like the final look and wand to start over...is there a way to quickly reset everything that I've done to the entire collection so that I can start over?
    2.  I have used the copy/paste function to apply edits that I've made to one image that I'd also like to apply to other similar ones but don't see a good way to apply the paste part to more than one at a time?  I've selected multiple images from the filmstrip and hit paste, but it only seems to apply the edits that I'm pasting to the first image that was selected.
Thanks you help is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    John

    1.  You can highlight all the images in the collection, turn on auto-sync, and click on the reset button.  That will reset all those images to the default settings.
    2.  Turn off auto-sync.  Highlight all the images, including the one that has the adjustments that you want copied to the other images.  With all the images highlighted, click in the picture area of the one that has the correct settings to make sure it is the one that has focus.  Then click on the sync button, and choose which settings you want to have copied to the other images.  Then click synchronize.

  • How do I get rid of the question marks in front of my images in LR5 so that I can edit those images?

My images were automatically transferred from Photoshop Elements 10 to my new Lightroom 5, but many images had a
question mark in front of them in LR5.  I cannot open those images to edit them.  How do I remove the question marks.
    Thanks.

  • LR5 1:1 Previews workflow question

I don't work with 1000's of images at a time, so I build 1:1 previews on import to speed up the editing process.  After editing, I do want to discard the 1:1 previews to save disk space, and I usually do it manually on the keepers and have the prefs to delete after 30 days as well.  My question is:  If I delete an image from the disk before I discard the 1:1 preview, does the preview data automatically get deleted from the catalog file as well?  Or should I delete the 1:1 preview first before deleting the image from the disk?  Does it even matter?  I'm just not sure how the catalog preview data gets synced with a photo when it gets deleted.  Thank you.

No, I'm afraid you're not reading my explanation right....so let me try again.
When you work in the Library module, you are seeing what are effectively jpeg previews of your raw files (assuming you are using raw of course, though the same principles apply for other file types). These can be built at several points, e.g. import or post-import, and can be built in several sizes, e.g. minimal, standard, 1:1. When you open an image in Library LR will fetch and load the appropriate preview for the size of the image display area and the zoom factor being used. If one doesn't exist for the viewing mode (e.g. zooming to 1:1 when no 1:1 previews have been pre-built), there will be a delay whilst it is built.
When working in Develop, however, those previews aren't used (except momentarily when you first select an image). Instead the raw file is converted, and the converted image "preview" is cached only, and this is what you see on your screen, and which is then updated in real-time as you move sliders. Note that this reading and conversion of the raw data happens every time you load an image into Develop (apart from maybe the last one or two images which might still be in the cache if you go back to them). In order to help speed-up this conversion, a variety of methods are used....for DNG files there is the option to build "Fast Load Data" which is written into the DNG header during initial conversion and then read when you open the file into Develop. For proprietary raw files there is the ACR cache entries, which are small files (similar to the DNG Fast Load Data) containing partly-processed raw data. This is a very simplified explanation of the process, which with LR5 is further complicated by the introduction of Smart Previews.
OK, the issue here is: when are those ACR cache entries for proprietary raw files created? As I tried to explain earlier, an off-shoot of the rendering of Standard or 1:1 Library previews is the creation of the ACR cache entry (if one doesn't already exist). However, when you open a file in Develop and Lightroom finds that there isn't already an ACR cache entry it will be created then at the same time as the full raw conversion is done. In other words, every time the actual raw data is read, be it Library preview rendering or Develop image loading, Lightroom checks for the existence of the ACR cache entry and creates it if it's not already there. Which is what I said earlier.
It logically follows, therefore, that opening a file into Develop when the ACR Cache entry isn't present would be slower than if it does already exist (though you might struggle to see the difference).
Now does that make more sense? And it doesn't contradict elie-d.

  • Some thoughts / questions on createVirtualCopies() LR5

I've been playing a little with the createVirtualCopies funciton in LR5.
First adding the createVirtualCopies() function is great!
Thought / wise: could there be a similar function in the LrPhoto class, so that based on a photo a Virtual copy is created?
Then I'm not dependant upon any active selection.
    Some questions:
Why is it a catalog namespace?
Now as a plug-in developer I have to deal with selected photos and I would love to create a Virtual copy on a particular photo object as I like.
And what happens if the user selects a different photo when the plug-in is running?
    What is the return value?
At least it is not a properly LrPhoto object.
    I did a little test:
    local LrDialogs = import 'LrDialogs'
    local LrTasks = import 'LrTasks'
    local LrFunctionContext = import 'LrFunctionContext'
    local LrApplication = import 'LrApplication'
    Name          inspect
Purpose          module for listing a table
    Source          https://github.com/kikito/inspect.lua
    local inspect = require 'inspect'
    LrFunctionContext.postAsyncTaskWithContext( "CreateVirtualCopyTest", function( context )
        LrDialogs.attachErrorDialogToFunctionContext( context )
        local catalog = LrApplication.activeCatalog()
    local activePhoto = catalog:getTargetPhoto()
    LrDialogs.message( inspect (activePhoto:getDevelopSettings()) )
    if activePhoto ~= nil then
    local virtualCopy = catalog:createVirtualCopies( "CreateVirtualCopyTest" )
    LrDialogs.message( inspect (virtualCopy:getDevelopSettings()) )
    else
LrDialogs.message( "No photo selected! Please select a photo" )
    return
    end
    end )
    Any thoughts?
(Example based on code of Rob Cole.)

    Poor design (sorry Adobe).
There are a number of new functions which bypass the catalog write methods (which is convenient) but are tied to the Lr user interface, e.g. library view mode, or develop module, which is bad - especially bad since there is no way to:
    A. Tell which module / mode Lr is in.
    B. Force which module / mode to be in.
    C. Assure photos are targeted, even if being filtered, or are underlings in a stack..
I hope somebody who knows what they're doing with the SDK sorts this mess out before releasing Lr5 SDK.

  • LR3 to LR5 upgrade, import questions

I upgraded from LR3 to LR5 and ona separate computer, copied all my images onto a separate new external and now want to upload to 5, but not all my images. Can I organize on my Lacie and them import them with complications?

Do you want complications? If you take the time to organize your images before you import them into Lightroom it will make life much simpler. I suggest using one master folder with a logical (for you) subfolder structure.

  • Lr5 Multiple questions- Please help

    I recently upgraded from Lr4 to Lr5.
In my APPLICATIONS, I have Lr4 and Lr5 both taking up 1GB of space.  Is it neccessary to have both of these applications.
In my PICTURES, I have a lightroom folder that contains-
    Lr4 views.lrdata
    Lr4 Catalog.lrcat
    Lr4 Catalog.lrcat.lock
    Lr5 views.lrdata
    Lr5 Catalog.lrcat
Another Lightroom folder in pictures which contains-
    2013-2Previews.lrdata
    2013-2.lrcat
    2013.lrcat
    Backups folder which contains-> folder 2013-01-18 contains -> 2013.lrcat and a folder 201309-05 which contains -> 2013.lrcat
    -Are these ALL necessary?
-I keep my Lightroom on an external HD should my catalog, Previews and lrdata also be on my Ext HD?
-If I use muliple Ext HD will I be able to have the catalog, Previews and lrdata on each to open files?
I just tried to open my LR and it asked me to upgrade from 4 to 5 haven't I already done this?
What can I delete and what should I keep?
Thank you in advance for your time and patience.

You have to identify which catalog is which. I imagine you would do this by opening them (double-click on them) and seeing what is in them. Then, the ones you don't want can be deleted or archived. So probably, they're not all necessary, but since I don't know what's in your catalogs, don't go by my word.
I keep my Lightroom on an external HD should my catalog, Previews and lrdata also be on my Ext HD?
Not sure what you are referring to with "keep my Lightroom...", there's the program itself, the photos, and the catalog file and previews. The program itself is almost always stored on the system drive (which for Windows is the C:\ drive), although I suppose you could put it elsewhere. The photos and catalog file can be on any disk you want them to be, as long as the catalog file isn't on a networked drive.
If I use muliple Ext HD will I be able to have the catalog, Previews and lrdata on each to open files?
One catalog works, regardless of the number of disks that the photos are on
I just tried to open my LR and it asked me to upgrade from 4 to 5 haven't I already done this?
Well, maybe you did and maybe you didn't. As I can't see what is in your catalogs taht are being opened, I don't know. You have to look and see if this is a catalog that was previously converted, or a catalog that was NOT previously converted. I think you'd want a single LR5 catalog — maybe you have that already and just haven't communicated it clearly.

  • LR5 Offline Updates Question

I have a stand alone version of Lightroom 5... it is on a PC that has been offline and it hasn't been updated.
    My question is:
If I download update 5.7.1 and install it will it take care of all the updates... or do i need to install the updates one at a time (ie 5.3, 5.4, etc)
    Thanks

All you need to do is install version 5.7.1

  • LR5 Smart Preview Portability Question : Can files be edited remotely?

I understand how Smart Previews work. What I'm unsure of is...will we be able to edit these files remotely, separate from the host computer? For example, I'm an image editor and I live 500 miles away from the photographer that I work for. Can they (the photographer) download the images after shooting, create Smart Previews then send me the 'Smart Preview' folder of images, I edited them on my own computer then return the Smart Previews back to them fully edited?

You don't actually edit smart preview files. Meaning: you edit the photos in the catalog, it's just if they have a smart preview they don't need to be online. In other words, the smart previews are tied to the catalog, and exist in it's bowels - edits are never stored in them, and you can't detach them from the catalog and do things with them, like send them to somebody. If you edit an offline photo by way of it's smart preview, the edits are stored in the catalog and/or the xmp of the photo, just like if you'd edited the actual photo.
So what your photographer would have to do is send you a catalog which includes smart previews, and you would return an edited catalog to them (without the smart previews), to import .
    eh?

  • Question:  LR5, suddenly the first part of the menu of development module is missing. (Basics)

I have contacted Adobe support, they proposed to delete the preferences, but did not work, then to have a new user and try it from there. With the new user I got the complete menu, but have no access to my catalog and photo database.
Has anyone an idea how to solve the problem. ??????

Go back to your version of LR without the "Basic" menu.
Right click (or Cmd Click) on one of the other headings in the Develop Side bar (eg: "Tone Curve").  Then re-select the "Basic" box from the pop-up menu that appears.

  • Can not remove ? from external hard drive folder in LR5 & can't link smart preview & original pic

I have LR5 and a MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5 I have an external hard drive that when I imported photos from my cameras memory card I selected the hard drive as the source to move the pictures to. I forgot if I clicked ADD, MOVE, or COPY.
In the library mode in LR5 the external hard drive shows up under folders, but has a question mark on every folder on the external hard drive. I control clicked on the question mark for the first folder (the parent folder?) and choose “Find missing folder”. I then navigated to the external hard drive and clicked on that same folder, then clicked choose. Nothing happened. I tried this same method with individual folders and the same, I control click on the folder with a question mark, navigate to the same folder on the hard drive, click on it (I tried both just clicking on the folder so it was highlighted and actually opening the folder), and select choose, the question marks remain.
    1. How do I link the two to remove the question mark?
Second question, possibly related. I have a collection in the library mode that has only previews, the originals were added to the same external hard drive as above. When I navigate to the hard drive via my finder (not in LR5), the originals are there. When I am in the library mode in LR5, in this collection, and click on the preview square in the top right corner of an individual picture in that collection, it says “image can be edited using its smart preview but the original file can not be found. Would you like to locate it".
The original location of it shows below this statement and is correct; it shows the path to the external hard drive and the folder where the original is contained that I mentioned previously. I navigate to that picture on the external hard drive and select it. I get another notice box pop up that says “the file is associated with another photo in the catalog. Each file can only be associated with one photo.” I select show in library and it brings me right back to the image that is a smart preview only. I am stuck in this loop and cant figure out how to associate the original on the external hard drive with the smart preview in LR5.
    1.   I have the originals still on my camera memory card, do I import again? I am afraid I will loose all my edits.
I hope I gave you the right info. Every link I find to answer this question is related but not quite the same, any link you know of is apreciated. Thanks!
    Ashley

Have you ever re-named files using duplicate file names e.g. names that have been used previously?

  • Trouble with transfer from older LR and machine to LR5 on a newer computer

I have used LR1 for several years on an ancient Mac G4 so not a beginner but didn't find anyplace else to post a question.  If anyone cares to redirect me to the right place, I welcome that.
The library module has always been a mystery, I've always been groping in the dark.  In spite of that, I've processed a few thousand raw files and have always been comfortable with adding metadata, and working in the develop module, which is all that I need.
I have just acquired a fairly new MacPro, and downloaded a trial version of LR5.  But making the transition to the new machine is proving to be a barrier.  I think the issue has to do with LR5 not finding the correct path to the actual images, and I don't know enough to help it do that as efficiently as it could probably be accomplished.
Here's what I've done without trouble:
    1.  On the G4, made a copy of my LR catalog, and gave it a distinct name.
    2.  Formatted a new large HDD on the MacPro dedicated for image files (not the boot disk).
    3.  Copied my image files from the G4 to the new HDD in the MacPro.
    4.  Downloaded the LR5 trial version.
    5.  Moved the renamed LR catalog from the G4 to the Mac Pro.
    6.  Opened the catalog with LR5 on the MacPro and selected Library module.
LR5 had problems finding the right path to the images, as indicated by the icon shown in the grid on the upper right corner of the thumbnails - and by the absence of actual images which were instead just empty squares.  LR did properly show the HDDs on the MacPro, both the boot disk and the second disk dedicated to images, but the image folders were not listed within the one dedicated to these new images, even though that's where they were saved.  Farther down on the left panel LR5 showed my original jumble of folders, but listed them as being still located in the old HDD, as indicated by the name of that volume.  And of course there were the question marks, which I have grown to know and....uh, tolerate.
So the LR needed to know how to find the correct path. I didn't know how to direct it, and a LR savvy friend also was stumped also.  So I experimented.  Unsuccessfully.
I should explain what I mean by the "jumble" of folders:  On my G4 Mac, the actual heirarchy of folders from my hard drive never appeared in LR, it was just a list arranged alphabetically.  That was inconvenient, but I didn't know why that was happening and didn't know how to fix it.
I found that I was able to help LR5 locate the images by clicking the exclamation point icon, and that brought in the images with all the metadata and develop settings.  But I was only able to do that with one folder at a time, and given the number of folders, that was going to be a long and very tedious project.  I was sure there had to be a better way.
I made some progress using the contextual menu to "update folder location" but again that was just as tedious to do, it was working only one folder at a time.
I then selected one folder and clicked "synchronize folder" which located a much larger group of images and added them where they needed to be in the left panel within the correct new volume.  The bonus was that the proper folder heirarchy was included.  However that process did not bring along the metadata, ie, keywords and previous develop module settings, and that was a deal breaker, I don't want to lose that metadata in the transfer, and I'm sure I don't have to, I know LR is smarter than that.
My original image files, and the original catalog, are all still backed up on my old computer, so nothing is lost, it's just not being transferred properly.
What is the best choice now?  I have no problem with starting over with LR5 - deleting the renamed catalog and making another copy  on the old machine, moving it to the MacPro, and working with that.   If I do, how do I help LR5 find the right path to my existing images with metadata and develop settings, without the laborious process of doing it for every folder?
I'll be very grateful for any and all advice, thanks,
    Gary

    Jon,
What Julianne said at first about re-linking made perfect sense and I followed it easily, had actually already been there.  But in my situation now, it didn't have any effect.  The directory of folders which had already been added were still just as they were, and the outstanding balance are not in the desired position.  And the folders which had been brought in earlier today when I clicked "synchronize folder", were still missing all the metadata.
Maybe this means I need to start over, and I'm fine about doing that that, but I don't know what it takes to accomplish that.  I'm concerned now that any changes I make out of guesswork could only make the problem harder to resolve.  It just feels to me like something I did at the beginning just wasn't right, and now it's a tangle.
    Can you advise?
    Thanks,
    Gary

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can't install 9.2.1 or earlier on any Mac that is only Mac OS X bootable. In fact you need to use the restore disks which came with those Macs to install 9.2.2 on those Macs. 8.6 is only possible to install on Macs which came with 8.6 or earlier. The 9.1 disk may be useful for your 1999 PowerMac G4, but won't be of any use for a 2006 Powerbook G4.

  • Why don't additional downloaded lens profiles show up in LR5?

Hi everyone! My name is Kai and this is my first post here. Normaly I find an answer to all my questions by reading already existing discussions. But this time I wasn't lucky...
Hopefully this is not a stupid question.
I downloaded lens profiles for the Rokinon 7.5 fisheye and created a folder named "Rokinon" in "Rsources", "LensProfiles", "1.0" (MAC OS) to put them in, but they don't show up in LR5 and I can't use them. What's wrong?
    Thanks, Kai.
    <moved by mod from downloading,installing,setting up - kglad>

The correct location to place downloaded Lens profiles on a Mac is:
    Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / LensProfiles /
