CC's on 16x9 NTSC SD project

Hello.
I have built a 16x9 project that needs to include Closed Captions.
The footage was encoded SD 4x3 anamorphic.
I am using a valid .scc file that for some reason will not show up when I burn a disc.
I've tried this same .scc file with a 4x3 project, and the Line 21 data shows up perfectly.
Can 16x9 DVD's correctly display Closed Cpations (Line 21 data)?
Is this is a situation where I have to use subtitles instead of captions?
thank you!

  • Capturing HDCAM in 4x3 NTSC DV project

i have a HDCAM tape with some great footage that I'm trying to capture and play in my 4x3 NTSC DV project. I would love the HDCAM stuff to play
at its native 16 x 9. What settings should I use to make this happen?
    HDCAM specs are:
    1080 active line
    16x9 aspect ratio
    59.94 Hz field frequency
    My project is
    NTSC - DV
    29.97 frames per second
    compressor is  DV/DVC-PRO NTSC
    and I'm on FCP 7

DV NTSC Anamorphic.  Because there is no SD 16x9 full raster format.

Not sure whether you're looking for advice on capture settings or editing. If you've successfully captured the HDCAM footage and want to edit clips into a DV sequence and have the display properly, then adjusting scale in the motion tab to reduce the image size should produce a letterboxed 16:9 image within an SD fame.
According to your signature, you're running FCP7 on a PPC machine? Didn't think that was possible.

  • Why is 16x9 NTSC 601 853x486 not 864x486 ?

OK, like the subject states, I'm looking into 16x9 NTSC expressed with square pixels.
DV is 720x480, which when expressed square is 853x480, as it says in the manual, p373
CCIR 601 is 720x486, which should mathematically be 864x486, however the manual says it's 853x486.
Just below the chart the manual has this to say:
"Important: Final Cut Pro uses slightly different square-pixel image dimensions than
    other video and still-image applications."
Can anyone tell me WHY fcp uses different dimensions to other apps?

Found the Solution on idvd help:
Use QuickTime Pro (included with Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Studio) to adjust the aspect ratio of the movie so that iDVD will handle it as intended. This won't re-encode your movie, so there will be no generation loss between Final Cut Pro and iDVD. Only the displayed aspect ratio will be changed.
After you have exported the movie from Final Cut Pro, open it in QuickTime Player.
If the movie is displayed at 16:9 widescreen in QuickTime Player, there's no need to continue these steps. iDVD will treat the movie as widescreen.
If the movie is displayed in QuickTime Player at 4:3 or 3:2 (not widescreen), continue with the steps below.
Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
In the Properties window, click Video Track in the Name column.
    Click the Visual Settings button.
Deselect the checkbox for Preserve Aspect Ratio.
    Change the Scaled Size:
    For NTSC, enter 853 x 480.
    For PAL, enter 1024 x 576.
Now the movie should be displayed at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Choose File > Save to save the movie.
Now you're ready to create a widescreen iDVD project that will handle the movie as intended.

  • Is this true?? NTSC dvd projects will play in PAL players

The good news is: You can just send an NTSC disc. Any PAL set top DVD player capable of playing DVD-R discs can also play NTSC discs. All that is needed is a fairly new TV, built in the last 8-10 years or so.
So is this true? I can send my project made in idvd to a country that uses PAL and my NTSC project will play?

  • NTSC DVDSP Project.  Asset size problems?

    Hi,
I am making my first NTSC DVD from transcoded (previously PAL) assets. My friend (with a PC) transcoded them for me. Now the problem is that despite QT seeing them as 720x404 resolution, when I import them into DVDSP3 they appear in the Viewer and Simulation as squashed, like an anamorphic picture.
Is it anything to do with the fact that, as QT reports, the file is:
    'Normal Size: 720 x 404
    Display Size: 953 x 537' ?
If so, how do I change the file's Display Size?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Are you setting your track Display Mode to 16:9 Letterbox?

  • Producing NTSC dvd's from PAL projects

    Hi
I'm in Australia (PAL) but would like to produce dvd's that can be viewed in the USA.
If I produce a NTSC version of my PAL filmed project in idvd, will it work in NTSC dvd players in the USA?

when you set iDVD to NTSC/29.97 and import a PAL iMovie, iDVD will convert your material and creates a NTSC videoDVD ...
... my experience, going vice versa, NTSC >>PAL, told me, that the underlying QTengine doesn't show a good result.. so, the long way for a probably better result is:
export your iM as 'QT/Full Quality' ..
download and use for free JES Deinterlacer
open your iMexport, choose 'Project, conversion' and let JESDI do the conversion..
drop THAT new file into a NTSC iDVD project..

  • NTSC project timeline length is shorter on actual burned DVD

    Hi everyone
I am working on authoring a series of DVDs of music concerts using Encore CS3. These have all been edited in Premiere (CS3). The footage was all acquired and edited in PAL, as I normally do, as we are UK-based. This project was then authored in Encore in PAL format - everything fine.
However, we have also made versions of these particular concerts in NTSC as there is worldwide market.  have converted the video to NTSC using GV Procoder 3, and inserted my rendered audio, slightly adjusted for sync - all fine, into a new NTSC Premiere project. This is re-rendered to M2V & AC3 files for the DVD. Again all fine. This is a long concert - the length of my timeline is 3;16;36;09. However when I check the finished DVD back in a DVD player or Windows Media player, the length has reduced to 3hr16min24sec. So approx 12 seconds shorter over the length of 3 1/4 hours. There appears to be no audio sync problem, or anything missed out, and the chapters are where they should be just everything is just that slight bit compressed. (i.e. halfway through is 6 seconds different between timeline and DVD)
I normally only make PAL DVDs, and have never encountered this before, so apologies if it's obvious to NTSC folk but would like reassurance that it's not something which I'm doing wrong!
Interestingly I have checked two other discs in the same series, which have been released, which have the same effect. 2hours 18min 47sec in Encore reduces to 2hours 18 mins 39 sec on DVD
Any reason for this? My PAL versions is exactly 3.16.40.00 on both!!
    Many thanks
    Daniel

    Hi Stan,
Thanks for the message. It appears that the conversion does shorten the total, though I'm not sure exactly why it does this, I'm sure it's to do with the frame rates. This is not my concern however, it's why the timeline in an Encore NTSC project appears 12 seconds shorter on the burned disc, a bit like a stretched elastic band being slighty less tensed!
Transcoded out of Premiere CS3 using Matrox Media encoder to M2V and AC3 and imported to Encore as compliant.
    Thanks

  • Project from fcp NTSC to PAL dvd

Can someone give me the steps needed to take a NTSC fcp6 project and burn it to a PAL DVD? I have DVDSP 4 and iDVD 7. Thank you Maria

You will need to convert the NTSC footage to PAL footage (and ultimately a PAL m2v)
There are a few ways to go with this. One way I use that is often fairly good is export the NTSC timeline in a Uncompressed Codec (not DV or HDV) then run that through Compressor for the conversion using one of the PAL presets (i.e, Format Conversions PAL DV, PAL HDV etc.) but by tweaking the default by making a copy of the Apple preset and adjusting Frame controls to "Better" across the board. The encode that to a PAL m2v.
There are other techniques using Compressor, and also third party plugins such as Nastress (which is very good). Depedending on budget you can also take it to a place that does hardware conversion

  • Help creating NTSC DVD

Hi all, I'm trying to make a NTSC DVD and I need some advice.
My media was shot as 1920 x 1080 (16 x 9) PAL and I have converted the footage to NTSC using Compressor which has created a default 720 x 480 clip at 29.97 fps.
Is this the standard NTSC format for DVD?
I have created a NTSC iDVD project and have dropped the NTSC media into it and clicked preview.
The footage looks as though it is 4x3 instead of 16x9 - what have I done wrong?
Do I need to change the dimensions of my NTSC media so it will play as 16x9?
    Thanks

Thanks, no I've tried dropping the PAL footage directly into a NTSC iDVD project and I don't think there is a conversion happening - maybe someone can confirm this?

  • Can't open project saved in iDVD4 on new Mac with iDVD 7.02

I used iDVD 4 (in OS 10.4) a great deal but recently upgraded my Mac to Leopard on a Mac Pro. I have now iLife08 installed with iDVD 7.02.
When I try to open an old iDVD project file I get the following error message:
"Changing the TV standard will require iDVD to encode all previously encoded assets again."
I checked and made sure that iDVD is set to PAL (by opening it on a blank project) and I know for a fact that the old projects were also PAL so there is NO change of TV standard. When I click OK on the dialogue box, iDVD quits.
Am I doing something wrong here? I cannot go back to the old version as iDVD4 and 5 report that they will not run on OS 10.5.6. (iMovie 4 will run). This seems an almost Microsoft like lack of file compatibility.
    Any suggestions are very welcome.
    Dave

After further investigation, I think it is a bug with iDVD7.
It will open an NTSC iDVD4 project with no problems. It is a PAL version that it chokes on. I suspect this is an example of the "NTSC default" mentality in the software where things are not tested enough for other standards. My default if iDVD7 is set to PAL but something is not working.
I went back to my old iDVD4 projects and then saved them as an archive, ie with all files and themes included. These files, even if PAL, would open in iDVD7.
    Very strange.

  • How to make an NTSC DVD from Pal & NTSC videos using CS3

    Hi!
I am on CS3, on Windows.
I need to create an NTSC widescreen DVD from footage that is both NTSC and PAL. Also some of the footage is 4:3 and some 16:9.
What would be the best way to accomplish this.
I created an NTSC widescreen project in Premiere CS3. Imported all footage and arranged on timeline.
While exporting to Encore or to Media Encoder for MPEG 2 DVD - I am constantly getting the error "Failed to return video frame". Or "An unexpected error occured." I am unable to burn even and AVI. I have confirmed, that all audio and video clips are exact duration and that there is no gap between frames on timeline.
I am able to successfully burn most of the clips individually (except one from about 20 + clips) - but fails when I export them togetether.
I am racing against time, I have very tight timeline, I need to get it done today :-(
I would appreciate help from experts on:
    1) What could be causing this error - how can I fix it?
    2) Is the workflow I am using (combining all clips as they are), the way to go - or do I need to do something before I combine/export them for NTSC Widescreen DVD.
    Thanks.
    Rene

I think you are starting on the wrong track with this, if your source video is a DVD disk then you should not be converting it to anything. You just need the raw mpeg video from the dvd itself. a dvd consists of VOB files but they are really just mpg files with different header information. In most cases you can even rename a .vob file to .mpg and play it with any media player program.
Anyways you should go download this free program: http://www.svcd2dvd.com/VOB2MPG/default.aspx
It's a great little simple utility, you point to your video_ts folder and it will export the vob files for each title into a solid .MPG file which you can import into premiere and edit any way you would like. without wasting time or quality encoding to a different medium codec.
I will say that CS4 is much better at handling mpg files then CS3 if i remember correctly, but see how it works for you.
    Good luck!

  • HD NTSC to PAL Debacle

    Dear Compression sages,
I'm attempting to convert my NTSC DVCpro HD 720 Quicktime to PAL to make a PAL DVD in DVDSP. So I need a PAL mpeg2. My trouble starts here.
In compression I followed all the settings to convert to PAL. The resulting mpeg was a little rough in terms of quality, but it was the best I could get it. It seemed to play alright.
But to my horror when I dropped the clip into the DVDSP timeline I discovered that all the subtitles I had made in my NTSC DVDSP project gradually went out of sync. The DVDSP project had been fully converted to PAL, every menu. But this gradual de-syncing of the subtitles confused me. And this is not the kind of project that I can easily move the subtitles over. 26 min, heavy on the lines, 5 subtitle tracks.
I checked the audio sync and it seemed to be in sync, but I couldn't be clinically certain frames weren't being dropped towards the end. I did some research and discovered that many people had been having trouble with conversions from NTSC to PAL. Out of sync audio issues, frames being dropped, etc.
In desperation I consulted a friend, who recommended I use a FCP plug-in to do the conversion called Nattress Standards Conversion. He said he had had frame dropping issues with other transfers, but that the NSD plug-in had worked great.
I downloaded the plug-in, and attempted to follow the instructions (bellow) only to find that on step 9, it did not recognize the proper aspect ratio of my HD footage, giving me 4:3 instead of 6:9. I tried switching a few settings, but to no avail. Everytime I dragged and dropped the origional source clip into the filter interface the clip in the viewer altered to 4:3 ratio. Blast, I thought. Probably some little setting I will never discover.
So here I am, back on the compression forums. Has anyone successfully used compressor to convert NTSC HD to PAL without getting drop frames or subtitles gradually going out of sync? How on earth do I do this conversion without horrific results?
NTSC to PAL conversion for Nattress:
    1. edit the NTSC clip to an PAL timeline
    2. nest the NTSC clip to allow the plugin to scale the converted clip. Because the pixel
dimensions of NTSC video are smaller than PAL, the clip will appear shrunk down in
the timeline canvas viewer. This is normal. The nesting of the clip will allow the
plugin to correctly scale it to PAL pixel dimensions. (select clip and go to the Se-
quence Menu and select Nest Items - make sure the pixels dimensions of the nest
    are PAL sized)
    3. apply the G Converter plugin to the nested sequence in the PAL timeline. Make sure
the plugin goes onto the nest itself, not the clip that it contains.
    4. open the nest in the viewer (control click on the nest and select "Open in viewer" or
    select nest then press return)
    5. select the filter tab in the viewer
    6. set the correct settings for the desired conversion. In this case, we select Source
Pixel size to be 720 x 480 (NTSC), lower field order for source (in this case a NTSC
DV clip) and destination (PAL DV timeline).
    7. if you desire the PAL output to be de-interlaced, this can be performed in one step by
    selecting progressive output
    8. if you would like to experiment with the conversion algorithm using "Smart De-
Interlacing" then this can be selected in the De-Interlace options. The Tolerance
control affects the smart de-interlace and it's effects can be seen by selecting "View
Smart Mask" in the De-Interlace Options.
    9. the original NTSC clip that was edited to the PAL timeline must now be dropped from
the project browser onto the Source Clip image well in the filter. The plugin will use
this video clip for all the image data for the conversion. This is the important step
that makes this plugin different from any other, and is vital to it's successful operation.

Email Graeme Nattress with your problem. He does a good job supporting his plugins.
