CCNA/CCNP Lab Requirements

Hi
First post, this is totally in the incorrect place for some reason all of the categories are greyed out and this is the only place I can post this question. Hopefully the mod will inbox me and move this tread.
Anyway!!
Just starting out in the Cisco world, I’m changing career from a Project Manager within the construction industry so don’t have a clue about any of this stuff.
I’ve been studying for about one month from Tod Lams book, so far I’m learning the OSI etc etc.
Cisco is very interesting and I’ve got the bug and just want to play about now with hardware.
I’ve bought,
2 x Catalyst 2950 10Base-T 100Base-TX 24 Ports
3 x 1760 Routers all with a 60 pin serial card output and WIC-1AM Card
There are two empty slots on each router and its says they are for voice, I’ve not bought any voice cards for them yet because firstly I don’t know if the routers are going to get me through the CCNP.
Here’s the question!
I know the above equipment will get me through my CCNA but will it get me through my CCNP too. I’m planning to keep on learning until I reach CCIE so I want a lab that’s going to last at least until I have my CCNP.
Thank-you
Regards
James

Hi all
Right so now I'm looking at layer 3 switches....£££pricey£££!!!
Anyway it's all good :)
The guy I bought the AS2511-R2 from will combine the postage on another item so it makes sense to get this layer switch from him... eBay job :)
He's not got any 3560 or 3750s however he does have a WS-3550-48-SMI is that any good or should I get a the 3560?
So I've booted up the 1760 router and I have the following information below.

  • CCENT/CCNA/CCNP LAB - router/switches

Hello - I recently inherited the following equipment (below). I wanted to know if I could still train with this and if so, for how long before I need to add/replace equipment. I was told this could assist me upto CCNP. Thank you for all replys.
I'm currently interested in the Cisco Security path.
    3 x 2610
    2 x 2611
    2 x 2503
    1 x 2504
    1 x 2511
    1 x 2523
    1 x Catalyst 1900
    1 x Catalyst 2950
    1 x VoIP Cisco Phone
    1 x Frame Relay Switch

    Hi kwarren7677
Your equipment seems strong enough for the CCNP R&S , but if you want to focus on the security path you have to add an ASA maybe an ASA5505 and make sure the IOS running on the devices are K9 images to have the full security features enable.
Also would be great to have an IPS, but I think they are too expensive to make up a lab , it's better is you use the integrated IPS solution or buy a IPS module for the ASA.

  • Build a Cisco CCNA/CCNP/CCIE Virtual Lab with ArchLinux and CSR-1000V

    Hi All,
I'm working on the CCIE certification, thought I would share with you my scripts for building a virtual LAB. I'm using ArchLinux and the latest CSR-1000V (ISO) as of June 20th. Cisco should allow you to download this ISO for free. You'll be limited to 100kb/sec out of the box, but you can also get a free 60-day eval license that will unlock 50MB/sec.
These scripts assume you have QEMU installed of course, bridge-tools, etc.
Probably want to enable KSM first
    echo 1 >/sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
This script makes one virtual disk per virtual router. I suppose you could boot one router, let it go through the install, then power it off. Then use that disk as the parent for many others (qemu backing_file). However, the CSR-1000V seems to generate various UUID's for itself during this process and I wasn't sure how this might affect the trial license.
    Boot'em up:
    # How many vrouters you want
    ROUTERS="1 2 3"
    # Location of your ISO
    ISO="/mnt/nfs/downloads/csr1000v-universalk9.03.15.00.S.155-2.S-std.iso"
    # Path virtual hard drive storage
    VDISKS="/srv/qemu"
    # Build Virtual Disks (might only want to do this once)
    for x in $ROUTERS; do
    sudo qemu-img create -f raw $VDISKS/r$x.raw 8G
    done
    for x in $ROUTERS; do
    sudo nice qemu-system-x86_64 -name r$x -daemonize -enable-kvm \
    -nodefconfig -nodefaults -no-shutdown -rtc base=utc \
    -S -cpu host -m 4096 -smp 1,sockets=4,cores=1,threads=1 -balloon virtio \
    -drive if=virtio,media=disk,cache=none,format=raw,file=$VDISKS/r$x.raw \
    -drive if=ide,index=1,media=cdrom,file=$ISO \
    -net nic,vlan=1,macaddr=68:09:68:09:68:5$x,model=virtio \
    -net tap,vlan=1,script=no \
    -net nic,vlan=2,macaddr=68:09:68:09:69:5$x,model=virtio \
    -net tap,vlan=2,script=no \
    -serial telnet:127.0.0.1:720$x,server,nowait \
    -monitor telnet:127.0.0.1:710$x,server,nowait,nodelay \
    -nographic
    echo Booting Router $x
    done
Note that VM's boot in CPU suspended state. That's because the CSR-1000V ISO installer doesn't correctly auto-detect serial-console mode, so you have to manually select it (but only on first boot, subsequent boots seem to get it right).
So, get xterm's going and in each one, telnet to the virtual serial port: 7201, 7202, 7203, and so on for each router.
Boot them each with this command
    echo "cont" | nc 127.0.0.1 7101
    echo "cont" | nc 127.0.0.1 7102
    and so on
Now just tie together the interfaces however you want. For the connectivity in the picture, use the following:
    # Build lab ethernet segments
    for x in 1 2 3; do
    brctl addbr lab$x
ip link set up dev lab$x
    done
    # Bring up tap devices - allocated by QEMU but not up'd
    for x in 0 1 2 3 4 5; do
ip link set up dev tap$x
    done
    # Virtually plug in our ethernet cables to correct switch ports
    brctl addif lab1 tap0
    brctl addif lab1 tap2
    brctl addif lab2 tap3
    brctl addif lab2 tap5
    brctl addif lab3 tap1
    brctl addif lab3 tap4
    Sample configurations for each router:
    Router 1:

  • CCNP Lab setup

    Hi Guys,
I've to propose a cisco equipment list to setup a complete lab  for "CCNP R&S" course, this lab setup should be able to simulate the entire course contents/theories of the three modules including route, swithc and Tshoot).
So what is the recommended lab setup to met the above requirment? Further we are looking forward to purchase new equipment, rather than considering the re-purbished equipments. Please advise.
    Regards,
    Suthakar

Depends on your budget, of course.
To cover the switch portion, you would want two 3560 models (3560, 3560G, 3560E, 3560X, depending on how much money you have to burn) and two 2960 models (again, G, PoE, etc) depending on what you're after.
For routers, I haven't finished building my lab yet, but I'd want 1841's or 19xx's. Something that can run 15.x code. I think to really run anything, you'd want at least 4 routers, plus serial WIC-1T cards, serial crossover (DB-60) cables, and at least a 4 port serial module for one router. I'd probably want at least one big router, like a 3845 or 39xx.
I'd probably want 4 18xx/19xx remote site routers, and 1 38xx/39xx hq site router. You can use GNS3 to simulate the routers though really, so most of my focus has been on switches.
    Good luck!

  • Cisco Meeting Place - lab requirements

    Hi All,
Appreciate if anyone can just give me a quick pointer.
Apparently; I have limited/no knowledge of implementing the Cisco Meeting Place.
I would like to setup a demo lab/environment for practise.
I managed to obtain the Cisco Meeting Place 7.0 thru the Cisco Unified Workspace for Partners Software & licensing kit.
    It came with 4 CDs
    1. Cisco Unified Meeting Place Web Conferencing
    2. CIsco Unified Meeting Place Application Server
    3. CIsco IP Telephony Server Meeting Place (MCS7825,hp servers)
    4. Cisco IP Telephony Server Meeting Place (IBM Servers)
I would like to install it in a VM environment.
What else is needed from my side to run Meeting place as a demo lab??
I went thru its hardware requirements
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Cisco_Unified_MeetingPlace%2C_Release_7.0_--_Hardware_Requirements
    Application Server
    Media Server
    Web Server
Would i be able to run all the above 3 on VMware?

This works on your voice network.  There is a centralized server usually located in the same location as your CUCM with a SIP connection between the two.  Bandwidth requirements are the same as a phone call. If you are using G.711, then 60K+ per call. Each participant calls into the system on either an internal number or on a PSTN line with a dedicated phone number(s). The enter the meeting ID and are in the meeting. Beside scheduled meetings reservationless is also supported.   The MP Application Server handles managing the voices in a meeting and is the only server required.
MP runs on specific MCS server listed below and won’t install/be supported on other MCS servers.
    MCS 7845-I3-RC2 Dual Intel E5540 2.53 GHz, 4x300 HDD, 8GB RAM
HP equivalent: DL380-G6 Server, part number AX693A
    MCS 7845-I2-RC2 (end-of-sale 12/09) Dual Intel 5140 2.33 GHz, 4x146GB HDD, 4GB RAM
    MCS 7845-H2-RC2 (end-of-sale 7/09) Dual Intel 5140 2.33 GHz, 4X146 GB HDD, 4GB RAM
HP equivalent: DL380-G5 Server, part number 470064-887
    MCS 7835-I3-RC1 Single Intel 5504 Quad-core 2.00 GHz, 2x146 HDD, 4GB RAM
HP equivalent: DL380-G6 Server, part number AX690A
Note: The MCS 7835-I3-RC1 does not support multinode deployments.
The following URL (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/ps5664/ps5669/tsd_products_support_series_home.html) is the location of a lot of the MP documentation.
    Hope this helps.

  • What To Take After CCNA?

    Hi Experts,
Hi! I would like to ask you guys on what certification could I take after CCNA?
My choices are to take CCNP but I believe it is a long and hard road because of 3 hardcore exams.
Also in my option is to take CCNA voice because I'm curious on how Cisco voice works specially to work on it on home labs.
Guys need your advice on a Cisco carreer path to take.
    Thank you for your support.
    Ron

    Hi ronchristian.timbang,
I would agree with Leo on this.
Once you complete the CCNA, Go for CCNP Routing and Switching and make sure you read the book throughly and understand the concepts how the technollogy works rather than going for certification first. If you understand the technlogy and concept getting the certification would be really easy.
I see that CCNP exam is covering almost most of the concept hence if you read book not leaving a single page then you would be very good at it.
Do some practice on the physical labs if possible else go with GNS/Packet tracer and try to do all the labs.
I would also appriciate if you can think some logical way of how the routing/switch works and try to implement creating scenario of your own that makes you master by thinking out of the box.
    Say for example:
1- STP how to migrate MSTP to PVST/PVST+
2- What changes are there between STP/RPVST
3- Explain indepth the reason to choose BGP and how you can influence the routes/
4- OSPF is itself a indepth ocean hence check how you can get all the areas to talk to each other and how you can filter it.
5- How can you interact between different protocols.
6- Wirelss concept would be included in your CCNP i believe
7- Think of which track you want to know after completing the CCNP r&S. If you just want to know what is voice technology then study CCNA voice and move back to your actual track if it is R&S then plan for CCIE certification.
8- If you dont have any plan to gain CCIE certification and you are enough with CCNP R&S then you can also think of CCNA,CCNP Data center which is very well required now a days to understand what all components involve there and how it works.

  • Certification query CCNA RS

    Dear Team,
I want to give CCNA exam in routing -swithing but as per cisco site its not very clear that which exam need to be pass to get the certification for go ahead to CCNP
Please help as exams code i have mentioned below.
    200-120= CCNAX-cost=$295
    or
    100-101=ICND1-cost=$150
    200-101=ICND2-cost=$150
    hari

    CCNA voice only requires CCENT:
    Prerequisites
Any valid Cisco CCENT, CCNA Routing and Switching or any Cisco CCIEcertification can act as a prerequisite.
There is no prereq for the CCIE voice but that exam will be retired on February 13, 2014.
    Announcement
CCIE Voice will be retiring on February 13, 2014 and the new CCIE Collaboration will become the standard for telecom, unified communications, and video professionals.
The replacement is called CCIE collaboration. There is no prereq for that either. The written is valid for 3 years but you need to take the lab within 18 months.
Step One: CCIE Collaboration Written Exam
You must pass the two-hour, written qualification exam covering those technologies and applications that comprise a Cisco Enterprise Collaboration solution before you are eligible to schedule the lab exam.
Step Two: CCIE Collaboration Lab Exam
The eight-hour lab exam tests your ability to get the collaboration solution operating in a timed test situation. You must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18-months of passing the CCIE written exam. If you do not pass the lab exam within three years of passing the written exam, you must retake the written exam before being allowed to attempt the lab exam again.
So written is valid for 3 years but the first attempt must be within 18 months. When you are CCIE certified you need to recertify every 2 years by taking any expert level exam.

  • What career path to take after CCNA??

    Hi All
I completed my ccna 2 years ago.I am working as 2nd line IT support but have no experience to any of the cisco products.Because all of the switches are allready configured and company dont let you touch the stuff unless you have experience.Because i need to renew the certification at the end of the year i am thinking shall i go for ccna security or not?
I have tried applying for all the cisco jobs but no luck so far??Please help........

You are in a proverbial spin-cycle:  Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
Companies won't hire you because you are not CCNA, for example.  Now that you are CCNA they won't hire you because you don't have any experience.  You can't have any experience because no one will hire you.
Unfortunately, in our line of work, we always require someone who has "certification" because we won't spend endless time explaining the concept of IP subnetting, for example.  However, this does not stop anyone who claims to be CCNA/CCNP and designs a rack-full of HP servers and a 3750E as top-of-rack switch and hoping the PoE can power up the servers.  Or someone who claims to be CCNA but doesn't know how to erase a config of a router.
Short story is this:  Unless you can gain a foothold to the IT industry, studying for more certification is a waste of your time.  I mean, CCNA Security is nice-to-have but unless you have three years of experience under your belt, it doesn't really mean much.

  • File Location External Processing Lab

I know these have to be the dumbest questions, but I am a professional photographer who recently came from the dark side (PC) to an IMac. I thought Aperture would be the best route to go so I now have it too.
I need to send my jpeg files to my lab, but I cannot seem to access my aperature files as I am able to access other photo files such as IPhoto. It just doesn't categorize itself. When I clicked on the Aperture file, it dumped every image which exists into my lab ordering system. I have searched for this answer but have spent too much time on this so I need to ask this silly question here. How do I locate this file?
Also, when I edit my images in Photoshop, I am not able to use the filters such as diffuse glow. It does not allow me to do this. I am not accustomed to being crippled in my workflow this way. I am selecting the external editor and the image goes into Photoshop, but I cannot save as a jpeg which my lab requires and I cannot fully edit it.
I realize I am not changing the master file, which is great, but when I am finally able to locate the images to send to the lab, and I select one which is edited, will the full version with the high quality be sent, or will it come back pixilated and poor quality?
    Sorry for being so naive!
    Robin

Now I am researching the ability to utilize my filter
gallery in Photoshop Adobe. I just can't access it
    with my images. Any ideas?
As noted the images come over from aperture in 16-bit mode by default, you need to convert to 8-bit mode to use some filters...
When you save that image it will be stored as an 8-bit image which also saves some space. If you try to do further Aperture edits on that image it will copy that file and make a new master from it - so try and finish all Aperture editing before you move to editing externally. That way you'll also preserve any layers you create as you can always edit that external version and get back the same file.

  • How to best partition the HDD for dual boot: Windows 8 & Linux

    Hi,
I'm a newbie in Windows 8, linux, Partition....
I would like to use my new laptop with windows 8 pre-installed to the following:
Create a Dual Boot Windows 8 / Ubuntu
Create on my C drive (unique drive on my laptop):
    *a partition for the system
    *one for Windows 8
    *one for Data and
    *last one for Ubuntu OS
    My aim is :
-to install VmWare on Windows 8 and run Checkpoint Splat with virtual machines to perform CCSA labs.
to install GNS3 on Ubuntu for CCNP labs but with GNS3 accessing files in the Data partition
I have a Toshiba Satellite with 750Gb and 8 Go RAM.
According to you what's the best size for my partitions?
Is there a better way to partition my C drive regarding my aim?
    Best Regards
***I don't know if it's the right section, sorry for that. Feel free to move this thread in the appropriate section***

    Hi,
    Thank you all,
Isn't it too much 200G for Windows as i will on ly install VMWARE Workstation 9 for lab purposes and possibly a few softwares.
VMWARE installed on Windows will require 2 GB + 1 GB per host (i will use approximatively 15 hosts).
Checkpoint products will be installed on VMWARE that is installed in Windows :
    - disk space needed for 3 Checkpoint gateways: 3*37 GB
    - disk space needed for 2 Checkpoint gateways management servers: 2*10 GB
On Linux I'll install GNS3 with 10 GB disk space required and a few softwares.
I've got a Toshiba stellite computer with Windows 8 pre-installed.
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @2.5 Ghz
    RAM: 8 Go
    64 bits OS, processor x64
    See below the screenshot
I've taken screenshot of my partition (below).
    * Don't take into account the disk 1 (E) partition
Can u confirm that in Disk o, partitions with 450 Mo, 260 Mo and 9.48 Go are for recovery system?
I am planning to let the recovery partition as it is and divide the TI30985500A (C) partition (688 Gb) into:
    - 200 Gb windows partition
    -100 Gb Linux partition
    -388 Gb data partition
What do you think about this partionning regarding the informations i've provided above?

  • Telepresence infrastructure

    Dears ,
Have few questions about the Video conference infrastructure , we used to do systems with VCS,TMS,MCU but now all i see that CUCM is involved soo :
1- is the CUCM considered to be a replacement for VCS , does it support h323, does is support name dialing ?
2- what is the perfect video conference infrastructure ?
3- is there any learning materials for the whole video conferencing system ?

CUCM is not a complete replacement for VCS yet but Cisco is incentivising customers to move to CUCM. CUCM doesnt support H323 or name dialing yet, keep in mind even if you have CUCM you will need a Expressway C/E (same code base as VCS C/E but different licenses) for firewall traversal. The expressway C/E does SIP-H323 interworking, so in theory calls to H323 endpoints would work. CUCM doesnt support IP address dialing but there are workarounds in place but these are not user intuitive.
Its difficult to say what the perfect video conference infrastructure since it all depends on what the customer needs to do. If the customer has 3rd party endpoints, VCS would be a better fit.
There is not a single book, you could start at learning the CCNA/CCNP collaboration track and then read through configuration guides and get your hands on some lab equipment.

  • Print module - print to file options

When creating JPEGs using the Export function of the Library module, Lightroom 4 offers you very detailed control over the export options, including automated rules for the folder/filename structure.
When creating JPEGs using "print to file" in the Print module, the controls seem to be much more limited. Notably, the folder/filename has to be specified manually for each print job.
Is there a way to keep (or append to) the original filename when exporting from the Print module, short of typing it in by hand for every single image?
(For context: My print lab requires that submitted files exactly match the print, pixel-for-pixel, for everything to work correctly. If the file doesn't match, their print driver will scale and crop until it does. So, if I use the Library module's Export function and the aspect ratio of the file is different from that of the closest available paper, two edges may get cropped. Or, in other words, I have to pad the image with white bars to fill the paper's aspect ratio if I want it to print the way I want it to. The Print module creates files that are perfect for my purposes. But, since I can't figure out how to get it to keep the filename, the back print data on the paper copies- which I will need 8 years later to find the original when a re-print is ordered- is useless.)

Thanks Effeegee. At your suggestion, I tried LR/Mogrify + ImageMagick and, with a bit of tweaking, it does exactly what I need (and far more efficiently than LR4 Print).
For other users' reference, the LR/Mogrify configuration to do this is:
In Lightroom Library -> Export, LR/Mogrify adds "Post-Process Actions". Turn on "Background Canvas" and "Compress to file size".
Under the regular "Image Sizing" control, turn on "Resize to Fit: Dimensions" and set the paper size (long side first) and printer resolution. This resizes the image to fit within the specified paper size.
Under "Mogrify Canvas", set the paper size again (in pixels, long side first), and turn on "Adjust for landscape/portrait". This pads the image with blank borders to exactly fill the specified paper size.
Note that if the short side is specified first, LR/Mogrify sometimes pads on all sides....
To minimize additional JPEG artefacts, I suspect that under Lightroom export's "File Settings" the JPEG quality should be 100 (i.e. negligible loss) and the final compression should be done only after all post-process actions, i.e. use LR/Mogrify's "Compress to given file size". (But don't quote me on that as I haven't traced the actual code path.)

    OOPS !!
I will repost the whole messaqge with the correct external URL's:
In  general, the Trustsec design and deployment guides address the specific  support for the various features of the 'whole' Cisco TS (and other  security) solution frameworks.  And then a drill-down (usually the  proper links are embedded) to the specifc feature, and then that feature  on a given device.  TS 2.1 defines the use of ISE or ACS5 as the policy  server, and confiugration examples for the platforms will include and  refer to them.
