CCNP Voice Lab - What to buy?

Hi folks,
I've been searching the web for some examples of a voice lab, however to me it's unclear on exactly what I need. Do you mind taking 5 minutes to help me out?
I've already got a lab using ESXi, CSR1000v a couple of PIX 515's and a POE switch along with 6 x 3750's. I've got several 2621XM on a shelf that could be restored with 64MB of Flash and 256MB of RAM. I've also got a 2851 but with no RAM or Flash. Plus 2 IP Phones.
What I'd like to do is build a voice lab that allows me to setup CME and to simulate calls going across PSTN (to simulate WAN failover). I imagine I'll only need two physical routers, the rest can be done within ESXi using CUCM with CIPC's, unless of course the IP Phones are required when the site is running CME.
I want to simulate a company that grows from single site, to multiple site centralised CUCM, then build a de-centralised cluster then move to a cluster to cluster over the WAN. Working this way with a goal helps me learn rather than reading books/watching videos.
What cards/routers/cables do I need?
many thanks
Dave

Thanks afmmanicke,
Which of these cards however do I need and why?
I've seen that the following versions of CME are available, for studying what do you folks recommend?
8.6 - Cisco 28XX
4.1 - Cisco 2621XM
I'm leaning towards 8.6 but for CCNP Voice not sure if it's overkill or 4.1 is not enough.  Version 8.8 and above requires 29XX which is out of my budget.
thanks
Dave

I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD. Also, I can not afford an expensive camera and need some advice on which of the available cameras would be best and also work well with a Mac. One last issue, I currently use a Panasonic #CCD camera that takes a tape. When I load video to Final Cut the audio and video are out of sinc. Go figure. Can anyone help with these questions. Karen

    Hello Karen,
If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders.  Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs.  Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE.

  • Minimum hardware for 'voice' lab ? - Please answer.

    Hi,
    I've got (3) C2610's running IP Plus IOS 12.3. I also have (2) Cat 2912XL.
If I want to play with VoIP configurations, how much am I going to miss if I don't have a Layer 3 switch ? I mean, the Cat 3550 is kind of a little expensive for me and therefore I would like to play with VoIP without a layer 3 switch for now, if possible.
    Please advise.

Thanks. It is a C2610. I put 64D and 16F and I am running in reality the Enterprise Basic image from the XM platform. The problem is that it is 12.3 and I see that XM's 12.4 don't run on C2610's.
    How about the switch ?
Can I practice voice labs (at CVOICE level) and dispense the need for layer 3 switches ?

  • Can I use QoS exam in ccnp voice?

    Hi all,
I have a doubt. I made a ccip exam and will expire in 2015, even retired. When I  made the QoS exam,  i be enroled in ccnp voice.
Now I have cvoice, cipt1 and cipt2. If I take the tshoot voice exam, I will become ccnp voice certified? Or I have the  CAPPs on my may yet?
    Regards.

If I remember right the QoS-Exam was Part of the CCVP. But that retired on February 2011. Sometimes there is a "migration"-phase for old exams, but typically only for a short time-period. So it seems that you have to go for the TVOICE and CAPPS to certify as a CCNP Voice.
    You find the requirements here:

It appears to depend upon the version you will be using:
    http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Compatibility/en352429
Based on what I can tell, you may have to go to the second hand market in order to get a MBP that will run a compatible OSX.
    Ciao.

what to buy? I want to a small amount of product photo editing, build websites, and do some product label graphics.  74 years old and do not want to do the Cloud thing online.

Well, the web site building we can get out of the way rather easily:  You cannot build websites with any Photoshop related applications.  Adobe has other applications for that.
You can still buy the full version of Photoshop CS6 with a perpetual license—no monthly payments and you own it. $700 for the standard version, $1,000 for the extended version.
The Photographer's deal gives you a subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 per month, but you never get to own the software.  The moment you stop paying, the software ceases to work.
The Cloud thing is not really on-line.  It resides on your computer.  It only has to call the mother ship once a month or so.
Then there's the bargain-basement priced, emasculated Photoshop Elements, with some hand-holding features.
I'm a septuagenarian too, but then I've been using computers for decades, Photoshop seriously for over twelve years.  Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Depending on exactly how much editing you need to do to those products shots, you may be satisfied with Ps Elements mentioned above.
There are trial versions for all of the above.

  • What to buy to record on garageband?

What to buy to record on garageband?
Do I need something by M-Audio to record vocals or guitar on garageband?
Maybe not NEED but would be good to have?
I haven't received my first Mac yet, but it'll be here in a few days. It's a G5 off ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT Bottom of page.
I want to be ready to use GB.
What would you recommend that I have externally?
    Thanks...seriously...thanks.
    JG

That's kind of a big question. It depends on what you're recording and what kind of results you want and what your budget is.
While M-Audio is a respected brand you certainly don't need any one particular brand. In some cases you can plug directly into the Mac's line-in. Of course you get better results and more flexibility with an interface, particularly if you use a microphone.
Check zzSounds, Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend, for Audio Interfaces. You want to consider USB vs. Firewire, how many inputs, do you need phantom power for a condenser mic, etc.
Check out the PreSonus Firebox and the Inspire, or the M-Audio Firewire Solo, or their USB FastTrack. (Firewire is generally more reliable overall but a bit pricier.)

  • What To Buy?  Canon HV20 or Cannon HG10

After a year of watching HD video on my LCD TV, I'm ready to make the move to a new HiDef camcorder. After reading many reviews I am considering the Cannon HV20. But am also interested in the HG10. I use iMoveHD6.... not interest in iMovie8. Any thoughts about what to buy from you HD video makers out there?

    Karsten,
I have also been looking at the same two cameras. Has anything changed on the use of the HG10 since your last posting on Nov. 20th?
I currently have the HV10 (mini dv tape) and have been looking at the HV20 but the HG10 is appealing.
It has firewire out so I assumed it would write to the Mac hard drive the same as the tape unit. Seems the output would be the same ... but what do I know??

  • What to buy?  I want to close it up & use VGA TV screen

Can you tell me what to buy? I have a Mac OSX 10.5.8 Intel MacBook. I want to close the case and use a separate keyboard and my HDTV as a monitor. The TV has a VGA connector like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector
There is a lot of contradictory advice on what to buy and I live in Japan so it's harder to get good advice. I'd be happy to hear from you.
By the way, if I close the case to the Macbook and connect to my TV I assume I can use the computer as normal if I have a keyboard. Am I right?

    Hi Deepest Forest,
In order to engage "clamshell mode" you'll also have to have a mouse connected, in addition to that keyboard. You can use either USB or Bluetooth, you just need to make sure that they're both connecting the same way (can't do a USB keyboard and Bluetooth mouse).
Does your TV not have a DVI or HDMI connection? VGA is usually an analog signal, whereas the machine is outputting a digital signal. There's the prospects of clarity loss.

  • WHAT TO BUY TO MAX OUT THIS PISMO BRONZE KEYBOARD POWERBOOK

Hi, pls advise what to buy to max out this powerbook and where best to buy upgrades from.
    POWERBOOK (FIREWIRE) 3,1
    CPU TYPE PowerPC 750 (83.2)
    CPU SPEED 400MHz
37GB HARD DRIVE AT THE MOMENT
I want to install an airport card, or would you advise me to get ausb key to access wifi?
also, is it worth trying to upgrade the graphics card current one being an ATY, RAGE M3
CAN I UPGRADE THE CD ROM DRIVE THAT CAN BE REMOVED BY PULLING A LEVER AT THE FRONT?
what about a back up power cord which one would you all recommend?
My plan was to try to put in a 100gb hard drive 7200rpm
an airport card and max the ram to 1gb.
I am a novice in opening up this powerbook, when you remove the cover you see 1 memory module, where is the second located?
Any other tips to increase the speed/power of this powerbook.
I just want to keep it as a spare working machine for business.
    Many thanks All
    Amin

The USB airport dongles aren't that great, require specialized drivers, which may or may not work, and that model supports the original airport card which looks like:
and can not be purchased at the Apple Store. Several places that sell used and refurbished Macs in England may be able to get you that card. I'd do a search on Google for such places. It supports 802.11b, but not 802.11g or 802.11n speeds, though most WiFi Access points offers 802.11b support.
You can upgrade GPU support via Villagetronic's:
    http://www.villagetronic.com/eprvtbook.html
This only offers a better GPU for external displays. The internal will still be the original. You can't upgrade the original GPU directly.
    http://www.macsales.com/
    http://www.mcetech.com/
    and
    http://www.macresq.com/
all offer CD-RW and DVD-RW drives for that model. Note though, iDVD, if it does run will run extremely slowly if at all. The oldest Mac that supports iDVD with any reasonable speed is the G4/733 processor PowerMac desktop. And that at 1 hour of video encoded in 2 hours.
The internal hard drive can only be upgrade to 120 GB per partition, and only Parallel ATA, and not SATA. Therefore any internal drive you might be looking for would have to conform to those specs, and I'd only purchase internal drives by Seagate and Western Digital. Note that for higher capacities, 5400 RPM drives are as fast as the 7200 RPM drives that are lower capacities because of the denser track density.
The official RAM limit on the article here:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBook_FireWire.html
Should be observed. I would not exceed 512 MB, even though some RAM vendors may say it is possible to do so. Mac OS X is particularly sensitive to the specs of the computer being observed. If you exceed such specs, kernel panics, and heat issues may crop up.
P.S. Please note, avoid using all uppercase. It makes it look like you are shouting, and based on internet net etiquette may be considered rude by some. I'm sure that's not your intention, just thought I'd give you the heads up!

  • I can't decide what to buy ipad or iphone 3GS

I can't decide what to buy ipad or iphone 3GS Can you request me some ideas or solutions...

I have both an iPad and a highly capable smartphone (HTC Incredible), which while not an iPhone, fills the same needs in my life. If I had to choose one device, phone or iPad, it would have to be phone as text messaging is my primary mode of communciation, everyone has my phone number and text messaging on the iPad would not be as convenient and an iPad won't fit in my pocket.
The iPad sits somewhere between my Macbook and my phone. It has pretty much replaced the Windows XP netbook I used to take out and about. With it's stellar battery life, huge screen and instant on, it's much pleasanter to use while sitting in a coffee shop or while eating lunch alone.
However, without knowing your needs, it would be pretty hard to make a recommendation.
    Best of luck.

Do you have a case on the phone? If so, can you try a call without the case on. If not, take a look at this support document to see if anything there helps. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1631
