CD Burn Error"4280" -- My Story and Happy Ending

First--a little background: Today I realized that it was two weeks since I backed up my iTunes folder. I'm planning to install a new (larger) secondary hard disk because I need more storage space. Since I need to get all files off my current backup drive, I didn't want to copy my iTunes folder to this drive. I decided to burn a backup DVD. My iTunes folder is too large to fit on one DVD so I knew I had to break things up. Trying to use the backup feature in iTunes proved frustrating so I resorted to my Roxio Easy Media Creator (ver. 9.0) program. Well this attempt wasn't going well either, but at least I was seeing some progress. I was annoyed that I had to copy each folder individually. This was very time consuming! But, I dutifully kept copying files/folders and placing them on the burn list for Roxio. All of a sudden I got a strange message box telling me to hold while my files WERE BEING MOVED! I admit--I panicked. I didn't want my files moved--I wanted them copied. So I quickly hit the cancel button and then my computer froze. After several control/alt/deletes I was able to restart my computer.
I timidly tried to open iTunes and to my horror I discovered a blank canvas! I immediately went to my iTunes folder to see what was still there. Fortunately my Music folder was still present and from a quick glance it seemed to be intact. Now I just needed to re-establish my library. The library file in my iTunes folder was blank. I needed my old one back. I did an iTunes knowledge base search and found out how to import a backup library file and within seconds I had my old iTunes up and running! WOW! This part worked great and I am very thankful; believe me, that it was so easy to reestablish my library.
Okay--I learned my lesson. If you buy new music or make major iTunes library changes BACK UP immediately. (I found room on an auxiliary hard drive and backed everything up again--forget the DVD option!)
Then I decided to burn CDs of all my recent iTunes store purchases so I would have a hard copy if something REALLY bad happened. That's when the trouble began....
I would try to burn a recently purchased album to CD and everything would appear to be working correctly, then a few seconds into the burning of the first song I would get a stop error and the infamous "4280" code.
I did a search of this error and tried a few of the remedies, but nothing worked. Finally, I decided to try to burn a CD in Roxio to see if another program could burn successfully. Well the Roxio attempt failed too, but the Roxio error message was much more helpful. It told me that the song list I was trying to burn could not be loaded into the buffer fast enough for a successful burn. This seemed very odd. I have a very fast machine and lots of memory. Something had to be jamming the works. So, I'm guessing that the aborted backup DVD I was trying to create was still somehow in the burn pipeline and I needed to flush this obstacle out.
Since two burning operations didn't work and I had no idea how to flush the buffer on my burner drive, I decided to just uninstall my DVD burner and reinstall it hoping that the problem would get fixed.
Once I successfully reinstalled my DVD burner, I again tried to burn a CD in iTunes. This time the project went a bit further and then I got a "4700" stop error. GRRRRR. (I still haven’t figured out what this error means—it’s very difficult to search the Apple “article” base.)
Well, I still thought Roxio was to blame for my problems, so I went back to Roxio and tried to burn a CD. After the DVD burner reinstallation, something got reset and I was successful! Now, I knew something was working right again.
Then, I went back to iTunes, tried a new playlist, crossed my fingers, and pushed the burn button again. This time everything worked just as it always has!!!! I have burnt several CDs--my goal is to get all my purchased music on a CD--and I haven't experienced any other errors.
My CONCLUSIONS:
1. Roxio somehow jammed up the CD burning protocol on my machine. By uninstalling/reinstalling the burner drive and then successfully burning a CD in Roxio the jam was eliminated.
2. The playlist I tried to use to burn my unsuccessful CD in iTunes somehow had “fatal errors” attached to it from this "jam" problem. By deleting this problem list and creating a new (identical) one I was able to start fresh.
Anyway this is a very long missive, I apologize. Maybe others who are experiencing similar burning problems can find some similarities in our stories and finally resolve the problem!

well done, samdogmom!
at this stage the only issue i'm aware of (in the Apple KB) associated with Easy Media Creator 9.0 is discussed here:
iTunes: Backup DVDs from my Mac don't work on my Windows PC
... not exactly your symptoms, but if you continue to have trouble with Roxio, it might be worth checking on the Drag-to-Disc components.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300448-Heres a start.
This happens on certain PC's. I dont know if you care to know the ins and outs of why this sometimes happens, but here is why and how to fix it. an application (such as Roxio, Nero, iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
the thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal.
Let me know how it goes.
    Good Luck,
    Rachyl

  • Yet another CD burn error (4280)

It seems that the 4280 problem is fairly common. In my case, ever since Itunes was updated, I've had problems with trying to burn CDs. It would always stop and then say "unknown error-4280". I tried solutions that others have used, but it doesn't seem to work. I can rip CDs just fine, I just can't seem to burn any anymore and before Itunes was upgraded, I was able to burn CDs just fine.

  • Burning error 4280 and 4450

    Hello!
So I've read all the helpful answers about this, and have tried every fix, but nothing works. Every discussion thread is super old and I wonder if there is anything more up-to-date?
This registry fix... in this thread...last post.... MIGHT be my problem, (and I suspect that it is) but the directions are confusing and don't match my computer's registery or driver details.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/2904875#2904875
If someone can interpret these a little clearer or to match my particular computer it might be helpful. I can provide more info on this if needed.
    Some information:
I have a Toshiba laptop with a MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ 850S driver.
(I DO NOT have a Sony driver)
I have the 4280 error. I ALSO have the 4450 error.
It happens every time I burn no matter what brand of disc Im using or speed Im burning at.
Either it will burn a few songs and then cancel, or it will cancel before it starts to burn.
I can burn DVDs with my DVD copying software.
I CANNOT burn CDs with Windows Media Player or Real Player or anything else.
There are no needed updates to my driver. The computer tells me that everything is up-to-date.
I have had this problem for over a year and a half and have not found a fix yet.
Here is the diagnostic and thank you very much for taking the time to help me!

    help..please?

Last time my error was 4450 and your last piece of advice was this:
    "LVanHall,
I'll assume you've tried the other tricks of lowering your burn speed and trying other brands / speeds / types of media.
So, let's try the lower filter trick to see if that has any effect.
On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.
Find the heading HKEYLOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
    Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
    Find the heading Control. Click
    Find the heading Class. Click
Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click
Go up to the Registry menu and select "Export Registry File... command. Make sure the "Selected Branch" radio button is checked and save that off somewhere that you can find it.
    Delete the key named LowerFilter.
Then reboot, and see what iTunes does.
To get the system back to its previous state. Run Regedit again and use the Registry menu -> Import Registry File... command and select the file that you saved off in the first section."
And I just checked what you asked and they are already set to "DMA, if available", but I do not have a seconadry IDE channel, unless it goes by another name because I have a primary and one that says Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F
thanks again for all this help.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

I notice your post has the same bus address as what I talk about here.
My desktop computer burns from iTunes perfect in version 4.7.0.42 and 5.0.1.4. When I go to 6.x I can't do anything. Go to oldapps.com if you want an older version.
I CAN BURN on my laptop with new version. It is a toshiba sat M45-S331 with a matshita dvd-ram drive.
    My PC is a dell with a teac dvd+rw dv-w58e, rev D.0n
Did find something sad and while I don't know much about computer programming here is my take. I think it has nothing to do with the drive, my drive works perfect and as evidence being able to burn in older generation iTunes.
I think in the new version, at least as far as I can tell, my bus address in my laptop for my cd drive is [0,0] but on my desktop the bus address is [1,0] for my burn drive.
I think some programmer at Apple took out ability to recognize two seperate bus addresses or to recognize address [1,0]
Opinions? I'm going to research how to change bus address on my drives and if can figure out will get back here. Or if someone else can, please replay to me by e-mail. You can send it to the following removing upper case letters:

  • CD Burn Error 4280 MATSHITA UJ-840D

Clearly this is an issue that Apple is aware of. CD's don't burn and have been through a couple of fixes and nothing I've seen posted is working.
    Is there a fix anywhere?
Is replacing the Burner the fix?
Why is Apple not acknowledging the problem other than the Sony burner?
Any and all help greatly appreciated.

    well done, samdogmom!
at this stage the only issue i'm aware of (in the Apple KB) associated with Easy Media Creator 9.0 is discussed here:
iTunes: Backup DVDs from my Mac don't work on my Windows PC
... not exactly your symptoms, but if you continue to have trouble with Roxio, it might be worth checking on the Drag-to-Disc components.

    Hi icsailor,
This sounds like a known issue reported here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=713014
There was a workaround posted, but I've not tested it myself. Here are the steps.
    # Go into Yahoo Messenger Options - Change the Window in the dropdown to Tab and press OK.
    # Then go back and switch it to small window and press OK.
Once the bug is officially resolved, you could try running a Nightly or Aurora build to use the fix early.
    Hopefully this helps!

If you're burning it as an expanded image then it's probably as Malcolm suggested. The alternative is just to burn it as a data file. Then if it's a 535MB .dmg file it will fit easily onto a 700MB CD. The decompressing will only take place as and when you need it to.

    Hi,
I have had this problem for over a year and I down to my last nerve.  I called Apple, basically got me no where, until I read this problem on another site and I did what it said, and I will be darned if it didn't work!!  I am serious, clean your laser lens!!!  Apparently it is a reading error because there is probably a smudge or build up on it.  I used a eye glass, lint free cloth, but I think they sell ones for computers also.
I really do hope this helps, because I literally just did a happy dance!!!

  • Error 4280 for Matshita UJ-831Da - Burn no longer works w/  iTunes.

    23 Dec 07
    MY SYSTEM:
    Sony laptop
    CD/DVD drv = Matshita UJ-831Da
    iTunes ver. 7.5.0.20
    PROBLEM:
    1. Burn quit working when iTunes upgraded to 7.2.
    2. I now get Error 4280.
    3. The only change was an upgrade to iTunes.
    4. No other software, or OS, changed on the system.
    5. Burn always worked with old ver. of iTunes.
    6. Burn still works with Win Media Player.
    7. Burn still works with all other software.
    8. iTunes will not upgrade itself now, nor allow "down"grade.
    9. Slowing burn speed does not eliminate error 4280.
    10. "Run Diagnostics" causes whole system to freeze and crash.
    11. Creating new account on system does not eliminate error 4280
    12. Creating new account on system does not eliminate freeze / crash.
    13. I have credit with iTunes store that cannot be used until fixed.
    QUESTION:
This is an Apple iTunes ONLY software problem. What is the fix?
    Thanks,

For my Matshita UJ-831Da CD/DVD drive, the driver version showing in device manager is 5.1.2535.0. I just now clicked on "update driver" and the reply was that a newer version could not be found.
But why would doing a "Run Diagnostics" in iTunes now freeze / crash my whole system when it never did before? It only began doing that after it also began failing to burn CDs. Again, the iTunes software is the only software that has ceased to burn CDs.
Several months ago, I finally reached by phone a girl at Apple tech support who first denied there were any known problems. But when I told her that the web was full of thousands of people screaming about this very issue she recanted and admitted that iTunes was having these problems, that they had posted the fix for some of the other CD/DVD drives but not mine. She then said, "but if you pay $35 I'll tell you how to fix it." Absolutely unethical. That's like buying a car then being told that there's now an extra fee for being told how to start it. She may have lied about knowing what the fix is, but either way it's absolutely unethical.
The problem is iTunes. iTunes changed and now won't drive the same current drive it worked with when iTunes accepted my money, in advance, to purchase and burn music at future dates. iTunes should fix the problem.
I'm willing to go through the leg-work, to try all of Apple's instructions here, but Apple also needs to follow through with this.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Error 4280 - I can't burn purchased songs to disc.

I'm not a technical person and I've wasted an entire day trying to resolve this issue - I've followed suggestions on other threads which suggest burning tracks as data cd rather than audio etc but stll no luck. Basically I try to burn a disc, select the tracks, hit the button (as I've always done until I updated itunes recently)and after a few seconds I get the error message "Unknown error 4280". Seems this is a well documented problem and having googled the error message there are a number of sites offering a fix - can / should itunes assist? I'm paying for tracks I can only play on my ipod and I'm a bit miffed!

    Hi all,
Ditto re Error 4280 when attempting to burn an audio CD. My steps were:
    1) Upgrade to latest iTunes software (version 7.6.0.29) on Feb 1st
    2) Purchase an album from iTunes store (Cat Stevens).
    3) Attempt to burn playlist....
    3a) Checking media - OK.
    3b) Checking playlist - OK.
    3c) Burndisc - initialising
3d) Writing "Moonshadow" - CD/DVD drive spins up ok. A few secons later....
3e) Message on screen "Cancelling disc burn. This may take a minute or two"
3f) Message on screen "The attempt to burn the disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4280)"
    4) Attempted exactly the same steps on my sons computer (bless his heart), iTunes version 7.5.0.20. It worked first time (after I had double checked "store/authorize computer" was set okay).
I am not at all keen to start playing with Gear drivers or similar until Apple themselves advise. I should not have to fix something I did not break.....
    Cheers,
    Aussie Tony.

  • I can't burn a disc from Itunes without getting error 4280 repeatedly.

I can't burn a disc from Itunes without getting error 4280 repeatedly. I was just able to burn a CD and now can't burn another. Any thoughts? I know my CD burner works as I just made a disc. I have tried changing file type from Audio to MP3 with no luck. Thanks for trying to help me.

    Hello Sonni,
It sounds like you are unable to burn a disc with iTunes due to this error code. I would first use the following article to check issues with the type of disc drive:
Burning disc in iTunes for Windows using a Sony CD-RW/DVD CRX830E model drive fails with 4280 error
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ta38101
If this is not the case, use the following article to help troubleshoot the issue:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I'm having exactly the same problem with 4450 & 4850 errors, using compatible hardware and several different brands of blank media. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and made sure my drive's drivers are current. It seems that a number of users are experiencing the same problem, and I'm anxious to see an explanation and solution posted.
