CD Burn Failure - Tiger

Recently installed Tiger, then iMac wouldn't recognize blank CD.
Got Help at 1800aplcare.
This fix worked;
Open hard drive/open users/dblclk on "house"/library/preferences
Drag the following files to the trash and empty:
com.apple.finder.plists
com.apple.cdhub.plists
com.apple.digihub.plists
com.apple.sidebarlists.plists
Log off then log back in as same user.
This worked for me, thankfully!
Best of luck...

I have saved your fix in Word. Thank you very much.
Before I proceed, I would like to verify I am having the same problem you are having.
I put the CD or DVD in and it writes...initializes...then, before the burn it spits the media out. Here are the messages that pop up:
Burning a DVD from Finder using the drag and drop:
Communication to disk failed error code 0x80020022
Burning a DVD from iTunes:
Device failed.
Burning a CD in iTunes:
Device failed to calibrate the laser power for this media
I think I may have the wrong DVD speed for my superdrive (8x). The CD-RW i was using is 4x-12x.
The CD burner had recorded 2 CDs and quit burning so I re did my entire system...wiped the whole system clean and started over (with Tiger 10.4.2). I did this because I was told that I had a software problem. Now I am beginning to think the Apple Person I waited an hour and a half to see was wrong. I think my problem may need some hardware replacements.
Oh...I can watch movies but occasionally I get a slight glitch...just a hesitation every now and then...and only once or twice during a movie.
Should I try your fix?

  • Burn failures in iDVD

    I'm getting a very high rate of burn failures with iDVD. When I create a DVD the program rattles thru its various tasks but when it comes to 'burning' the drive keeps revving up but fails to 'get going' - after about half a dozen attempts the disc ejects and the comment is that 'errors were found...' (or words to that effect).
    I'll re-do the project and maybe it'll work and maybe it wont - its frighteningly random. Tried different discs - that doesn't appear to be the deciding factor. But once a disc has failed there are no signs of 'burn' on it and yet it will be useless... With a success rate of less than 50% its getting to be quite expensive!

    Thanks for the response to my iDVD problem.
    I did as you suggested and created a disk image of the project - tried to open it with DVD player but it couldn't see it. I quickly made disk images of DVD projects that had been successful but they weren't seen by the player either - perhaps I misunderstood that particular part of the scenario.
    Anyway, I re-created the project with a newly-made file and it worked fine - but as I said - its all fairly random and success rates are low.
    My projects are always created in FCP5. I use DVD-R's - the last batch being 16x.
    I don't use MP3's because they still don't work properly in FCP so I don't think the problem lies there.
    Any other suggestions gratefully received.

  • Idvd burn failure error

    last night I attempted to burn again via your advice on link--"http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1610170?" When idvd was finished with burn it said "burn failure". Would you no if it's because I'm burning my saved idvd project from the external harddrive? Anotherwords is it making it to comfusing to the system. I made one dvd from idvd project that was made on internal H.D the burn was sucessfully and played in my home dvd player yet when I put it back in the mac it didn't show up in finder or desktop,just spun for 20 second and ejected. Took dvd to work to try on mac recognized it right away. Is there some sort of diagnostic I can do by myself or do I have to bring it in. If you can help please give detail as I'm still getting to no my way around. Any advice would be helpful.Thanks mark

    I too have had "burn failures". I discovered that if I make a disc image of the project and then burn it using disc utility there is no problem.
    To do this:
    1) while in iDVD go to "file" and select save as a disc image. This will take as long as your original burn, but when done you will have a .img file on your desktop.
    2) open your hard drive and select utilities. In utilities select disc utility, open this. You should see your .img file show up. If not, close utility, click in the .img file on the desktop and reopen the disc utility.
    3) select the .img file in disc utility and choose "burn" icon. It may be helpful to burn it at a slower speed. I only burn at 4x now and there are no problems. When you choose burn, it will give you the option to select the burn speed.
    Hope this helps!

  • Local net ssh failure Tiger (PHP MYSQL Apache Dreamweaver)

    I can't be sure, but I think this problem started with the latest security update. I'm 80% done with my first web application using PHP and Mysql in dreamweaver when I began getting an unknown error from dreamweaver when attempting to connect to my DB on my testing server. After 2 days of debugging and re-installing apps I finally wiped the testing server (G4 400 Cube memory topped out 120GB HD, down to the metal) reinstalled Tiger, fully patched, edited the httpd.conf file to enable php 4.4.1. Installed Mysql 4.1 (which was the last general distribution with a packaged install) and the server works fine, so I created myself as a user in mysql @localhost & @localmachinename to replicate root user. Navicat was up and running in no time, so I re-populated my server from my backup. Then I jumped over to my design workstation (G5 2Ghz Dual, 2GB Ram, 250GB HD) only to find navicat can't login to the mysql server because ssh wont connect to the G4. After much testing I discovered ALL of my macs will attach only to external addresses. My linux box, external linux boxes, even windows boxes emulating ssh will attach internally or extenally, the macs won't talk to anything in the local network 10.0.x What the ****! My project is now past due and I'm stuck because I can no longer ssh from any macs to internal machines mac or otherwise. PLEASE HELP!!! is there an SSH pakage so I can re-install? I couldn't find a mac ssh package on apple or ssh.org, Will that even make a difference? Can I uninstall the security update? Can anyone suggest a workaround?

    G5 Dual 2G   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Mac comes with a fully functioning Apache web server with all the scripting languages (except VB). You need to enable them in the configuration file.
    You need some light weight UNIX administration skills to do this. Use the system restore disk to set the password for the root account.
    Open a terminal screen from the Utilities folder in Applications. Type "su", press return, then enter the root password you set using the system restore disk.
    Make a backup copy of the Apache configuration file with the following command (type this in with no mistakes and press the return key).
    cp /etc/httpd/httpd.conf /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.copy
    Enter the following to open the Apache configuration (type this in with no mistakes and hit the return key).
    /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/httpd/httpd.conf &
    Locate and remove the # comment symbol from the following lines and save the file in /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.
    #LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
    #AddModule mod_php4.c
    Exit the TextEdit application and quit out of the terminal application.
    Put the following web page into a file named greetings.php inside the folder Library/WebServer/Documents.
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>Experiment</title>
    </head>
    <?php
    echo "Greetings";
    ?>
    </body>
    </html>
    Once you have made these changes, you can reboot to activate the changes.
    Put the following into your browser to test the configuration.
    http://localhost/greetings.php

  • IDVD 4.0.1 quits when burning using Tiger

    I have been using iDVD for years and it has worked perfectly for all of that time. I recently upgraded to the new Tiger OS and since then I have been having problems.
    I have a flat panel iMac with a 800 MHz G4 processor & 758 MB of RAM.
    Every time I try to burn a disc it quits. Since it takes so long to encode I usually start burning before I go to bed and (expectedly) every morning when I check on it there is a message saying that "iDVD has unexpectedly quit". The dvds work when I play them, but for some reason I am unable to make copies. This is very inconvenient because I make wedding videos and usually need to make several copies and I can't afford to take 8-12 hours for every copy I need.
    There seems to be a problem of compatibility between iDVD 4.0.1 and OS X 10.4.2
    I see that other people have been having this same problem. Is Apple doing anything to fix it?

    Just thought I should post back and let you know that I seem to be up and running again! Many thanks for all your help. I read through everything, and tried several of the suggested fixes.
    First of all, I rebuilt the movie part of the project by importing the movie from the finder, rather than through iMovie. I tried a burn, but still nothing doing.
    I then cleaned up a bit, as I did not have the apparently neccessary 20Gb of space- I had 17, so I deleted older files until I had 20.5Gb.
    I then trashed the iDVD prefs, ran MacJanitor, Repaired Permissions, and restarted the computer.
    Then, first try, my disc burned in a little over 15 minutes! Expecting the worst, I watched the whole thing on my DVD player (a 5 minute movie, and 4 slidehows with music and transitions), and it worked perfectly. I immmediately tried a second burn, and again it worked no problem.
    Am I just lucky?
    Again, thanks for all the advice posted here!

  • DVD burned in tiger won't play on panther

    Hi,
    I have an iMac G5 with Tiger (10.4.2) in it. I just burned a DVD there and it plays fine on that computer and on my home DVD player.
    However the DVD won't mount on my Flat Panel iMac G4 w/SuperDrive running Panther (10.3.9).
    I have the latest software updates on both computers.
    Has anyone come across this problem? Any solutions?
    What other compatibility problems do I expect with this DVD?
    I used to use the G4 for making DVDs that played on the G4 iMac, the G3 iBook, and other PCs. Will this DVD now work on all those other computers or is it only compatible with Macs running Tiger or worse yet, only G5 computers?

    uh, chase, I think you're in the wrong forum.

  • Install failure: Tiger & Panther & Jaguar

    I have 400 MHz Power Book with 384 MB of memory & a 10GB drive. (CPU Type: PowerPC 750(42.2)) It was running under OSX 10.3.9 successfully when it started to slow up terribly. So I decided to clean it out and try to upgrade to Tiger. Backed-up the hard drive and did an erase-&-install of Tiger. I'd get an "Installation was unsuccessful. Please re-install message." And again. And again. So I tried to erase-&-install Panther. Same message. Tried one or twice again, this time not erasing, but accepting the default "Upgrade" option. Finally it worked, it seemed. Tried to update to 10.3.9. Disk image failed to open, so I opened it on my desktop machine and network-transferred the update install file to the laptop to install. That seemed to work, but some apps refused to open; iTunes, Mail, . . . Tried to install Jaguar; same failure message. Kept trying till it seemed to succeed. Update to 10.2.8 failed. . . . Tried various other things, including DiskWarrior, TechTool, AppleJack, PowerBook hardware test disk. No problems found.
    I've currently got it running under 10.3. (There are a bunch of files and folders with (Mac OS 9) as part of their names. These, plus an AppleJack dmg and a ComboUpdate 10.3.9 --all under the root directory-- seem to be left over from an earlier install, even through at least one erase-&-install.)
    Oh, yes. The battery has been dead for a long time. If that matters.
    Any good ideas, anyone?

    If you do an Erase and Install then there cannot be anything "leftover" from a previous installation.
    Is this a Pismo or later model or a Lombard? Lombard's cannot run Tiger. Tiger requires a computer with built-in Firewire and USB ports.
    I suggest you may want to do an extended hard drive format:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
    A dead battery should not be a problem as long as you have the AC adapter connected for power. However, none of the settings normally preserved in PRAM will be saved whenever AC power is removed or the computer is shut down. This could lead to odd behavior because the date and time, display information, selected boot volume, etc. are stored in PRAM.

  • Burn Failure due to "laser level" being off: external drive

    I have just recently purchased an Optorite USB 2.0 Slim DVD burner with capabilities of RW. I am using an iMac G4 with OS X (10.4.2). I usually use a D-Link USB Hub to connect several other things to my iMac because of the lack of USB ports located in the back of my dome. I was told by a rep. at Apple Support that there is probably a failure of either power or loss of power because it is going through my Hub. He suggested that I hardwire it to my iMac. I did so and the same message appeared. Something along the lines of calibration error due to laser level. He also said that if the external burner was not compatible with the iMac that I am using than it wouldn't recognize it as a drive or even pick it up on the system but I did some more research on my particular model and found out, according to Newegg.com that it is not supported by the Mac platform. I am confused as to what I need to do. If buying a new burner, one that is generally used for Macs then I will do so but I would like to ensure that it will not work whatsoever. I have been troubled by this compatibility issue for too long now and am willing to do whatever it takes to resolve the issue. I would so greatly appreciate any feedback there is on my problem. Thanks in advance for everyones consideration and time spent helping me out.

    I have the superdrive that came with my imac and I get the exact same error message when trying to burn a CD. It reads and burns dvds, and reads cds, but that's it. Will not burn any CD's due to the "calibration of the laser". Any ideas anyone?

  • Burning failure - hardware error - help and ideas welcomed

    I have been happily burning DVDs. Then in the last 24 hours, iDVD is reporting burning error:
    The Recording Device reported the hardware error: Internal Target Failure (0x44, 0x00). Any thoughts welcomed
    Thanks

    Suggest trying an alternate media other than what you are currently using. Also if this fails to help then use a quality lens cleaner kit from Maxell or 3M. Good luck on this.

  • CD Burn Failure

    Using my Intel MacBook Pro running 10.5.5, I got this message when I tried to burn a Sony RW CD. "This disc could not be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new, blank disc. (Error code 0x80020063)"
    Tried erasing the CD with Disk utility and burning again. Also tried other blank CDs. I got the same message each time. I tried to burn a CD on my PowerBook G4 using 10.4.11 and got the same error message. Then I put the same CD (now erased) into my (non-Intel) Mac mini using 10.5.5 and had no trouble burning the CD. Can anyone explain what is happening and perhaps suggest a solution? Thanks.

    It's entirely possible that Apple optical read/writers don't "like" the Sony R/W. Not every CD or DVD is compatible with every optical read/writer.
    First thing is to check System Profiler to see what your capabilities are.
    Resetting PRAM sometimes fixes these kinds of things.
    You might also try a different brand of CD.
    My experience is that Toast will often burn a CD or DVD that the internal burner rejects. I no longer use the built-in burner for that reason. I use Toast 9.

  • Disc burn failure

    Why can't I burn a DVD-RW disc ? System Profiler displays DVD-Write -R, -RW, R,RW, +R DL
    If I use make a Burn Folder via File the burn fails with an error code 0x80020022 and and error message "communication to disc failed"
    If I use Burn Utility, inserting either Imation or Memorex DVD+RW discs shows MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857D. Selecting this and clicking INFO shows
    Locked: YES
    Writable: NO
    Optical Media Type: DVD+RW
    This suggests that the drive can be locked/unlocked but I have no idea how that is done. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Ok so ever since I bought the computer I was able to burn discs using toast and idvd. I always used maxell DVD+r discs. Burned several hundred of them last year in both my internal and external drive(and I still have the same ones I had last year, about 20 left). Since I am back I cannot burn dvd+r discs and my internal drive won't even recognize that there is a disc in the drive. I was having trouble getting my computer to recognize discs with movies on them for awhile too. I would think that the drive is going bad if it was just the internal, but I have the same problem with the firewire external drive. I have reloaded idvd and toast and am pretty sure that they are working properly. I can burn dvd rw disks, and that is what is perplexing. I have looked at the service manual for the macbook pro and it says if your computer is having problems change the drive or the cable connecting the drive.
    When I try to burn (with toast) it goes through the whole encoding process usually a couple of hours, then when it is about to burn the disc it give me this error
    sense key-medium error
    sense code=o x 11
    unrecovered read error
    Any Help appreciated

  • OS 10.6.3 & DVD burning failure

    Not too long ago I downloaded and installed an update to Snow Leopard. Since that time I have , once again, been unable to successfully burn DVDs. CDs will burn just fine but the internal optical drive and my external LaCie optical drive will not burn any kind of DVD.
    Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
    Many Thanks!

    Hi Winther,
    Some mentions in other discussion groups pointed me towards an app called DVD2onX2. I Googled and found the latest version. This app has presented no problems at all. Roxio Toast is still useful for CDs but seems useless for DVDs.
    Look for DVD2onX2 and give it a try.

  • 2008 Mac Pro burner failure - report "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03"

    Problem just arose - burners working days ago - NO major changes in Mac Pro --- Attempting to burn some DVDs (data only), using the latest version of Toast v12.0 & Dragon Burn, as soon as I tell either my internal or external unit to burn, it runs a few minutes then pops up dialog box - "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03". Blanks are new Memorex. I've restarted Mac Pro multiple times, still no burning possible. In dire need to restore capability. Most gracious thanks for ANY immediate assistance.

    There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
    I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.
    EDIT: There is an interesting helpful feature buried in System Profiler ... (read the last two lines of the report):
