CD Burner freeze on G5 Dualie...

I'm trying to burn an Audible audio book from iTunes 9.0.1 on my PowerMac G5 dual processor (PowerMac7,3). I have been able to burn music CDs fine, but on a book where the burn spans several CDs I find that the burn will stop without an error code during the finishing step of one of the CDs. The computer just sits there saying that it's finishing the CD, and if I try to quit it will warn me that the CD will be damaged if I quit the program before the burn is done.
I have a newer MacBook that can burn the same audio books without this problem, so I am wondering if this is a problem with the CD/DVD drive on the PowerMac. The PowerMac has a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D, while the MacBook has a Matshita DVD-R UJ-868.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? How were you able to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Problem resolved!
Thanks

  • IPhoto 6 - STILL freezing on a Dual G5 with 370 images

    What is it with iPhoto?! I've paid for another upgrade after promises of finally sorting out the sluggishness. Yet, with a library of only 370 images, each not bigger than 2MB, I can STILL only scroll through half of the thumbnails before the beachball comes in. I wait. I wait some more. Then I force quit.
    Could there be a problem with my images which is causing this? Most of the images were imported from elsewhere on my machine, rather than a camera (can't imagine how this would have any impact on performance).
    How is iPhoto supposed to cope with 250,000 images?! I have a Dual 2G with 2.5GB of RAM.

    Do you have DiskWarrior? If so I'd boot into it's CD and rebuild the directory files. Then boot into the Single User Mode and run the file system check - fsck as follows:
    FSCK - File System Check
    To start up in single-user mode
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.
    When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
    How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line
    Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
    1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the “-”)
    The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."
    If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
    **** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
    IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -fy" command until this message no longer appears. It is not unusual for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors. Run it until you get two consecutive times with an "OK" result.
    3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
    4. Press Return.
    Also run OnyX to clear all of the user caches and run the Maintenance scripts.
    See if that will help.
    Since you're using iPhoto for clients may I suggest the following:
    Create a new library for each client. That should keep it fairly small and allow you to burn the iPhoto Library folder via the Finder to a single disk, CD or DVD. Then is a client comes back at a later date and wants another book, all you got to do is copy that folder from the disk to your HD, open it with iPhoto and order another book. OR, just create a separate library for each book and save those libraries to CDs, again via the Finder.
    Also, before completing the order for a book find and copy the pdf file that iPhoto creates for uploading and printing. You can use this for proofing before completing the order and as a record of the book for future reference. (There's a way you might be able to use that file to order a duplicate book at a later date even with totally different library but that's another thread).
    Hope this has been of some help.

  • IDVD Burning Freezes When Adding Long Music To Menus?

    Hi, I am having problems burning a DVD - iDVD freezes a few hours into the encoding process and then I have to Force Quit and start again.
    I have previously burned a DVD of my movie successfully, but I then made some changes to the DVD menus etc and tried to reburn without success.
    The only thing I can think of which might have caused an error is changing the Music associated with the menus.
    I now have 2 or 3 minute pieces of music associated with my menus, and the loop times available seem to have been increased to match the length of the music. iDVD seems to accept this on the preview etc.
    Does anyone knnow if there are any issues with this, or any thoughts on what could be causing my problem?
    As I say, I don't get any error messages or anything, the app just seems to freeze (spinning disc stops spinning) and then I have to quit out!
    It's SO frustrating to have to wait around 4 hours each time to get the same issue!
    Thanks
    David

    Hi again guys,
    Still no good news unfortunately, although I ruled out a couple of things.
    It WAS to the disk space on the DVD and not the hard drive the error msg was referring to.
    After messing around with the menu soundtrack with no luck, I finally deleted one of my photo slideshows, and afte that the Burn command ran again.
    It would seem that iDVD in this case has not represented the free DVD space correctly, as although it said 2.6/4.2 GB was taken, it still would throw up the error. Reducing the project size ion my case to about 1.6GB then worked.
    However, the DVD STILL did not burn successfully. I got the dreaded 'freeze' again when encoding the soundtrack. SO it would appear that converting the files to .aiff did not work this time.
    Could it be to do with the length of the music I wanted to include? Does anyone know if there is a limit to how long you should have your menu music playing. Why do commercial DVDs all have short loop music? Is it just because they want to maximise the space for the movie, or is it some kind of physical contrainst that you shouldn't have long loop times for menus?
    And finally, is there any easy way to split my .aiff music files to say just take the first 30 seconds of the track for my DVD? I really don't have any other music suitable for my menus and what comes with iDVD is well, just, awful! Apart from my iTunes collection I have the 5 demo Garageband songs or the default music which comes with the Travel theme (that awful clarinette stuff, I;m sure you know what I mean!).
    Thanks for all the help so far, I am determined to burn my DVD with music other than the awful default stuff!!

  • Freezing sinc with Dual G5

    I've been reading these post to see if I can find an answer to my problem, but I didn't see any, or missed it.
    If I connect my touch iPod 2.3 to the dual g5 it freezes when it starts to sync a song or two, but usually the first song, and if it does make it through that first song it may take hours. This has been happening for awhile, and upon every iTunes update or iPod update never helped that.
    It's obviously a problem with the G5 because I can sync with my powerbook g4 no problems, but my main computer is the G5, so I'd like to get it to work.
    I've restored the iPod software and used the new iTunes 5 still doesn't work, so I had to connect it to my G4 and it works like a charm.
    This has been ongoing, and every time I get a new song or add something to iTunes on the G5, I'd have to put it on my G4 then connect my iPod to the G4 syncs like a charm.
    It just doesn’t not sync on the G5 and it freezes or locks up with the rainbow ball on a continuous spin, and I'd have to force quit iTunes.
    Does anyone have a solution to this problem or know of another thread regarding it?

    I am having similar problems.
    I recently bought a G5 and everytime i try to sync my iPod with my itunes playlist it does not even get through the first song. I have to force quit iTunes and disconnect the iPod and try again.
    It seems to work on the second attempt but i am beginning to find it rather irritating.
    Have you had any luck with possibile solutions?
    I have been looking through the post in search of the answer!

  • OpenGL freezes computer with dual monitors and fglrx

    I am trying to use the fglrx driver, and with a single monitor I seem to have gotten everything working.
    However I am running into issues with two monitors. Basically, when I have two monitors any opengl program doesn't run properly.
    There are two cases. If I use the xorg.conf generated by "aticonfig --initial", it still seems to detect the other monitor (although there is a black region on my gnome desktop). If an opengl program is run, the screen goes crazy where random pixels are changing different colors. I can end the program, and everything goes back to normal.
    Using the program "amdcccle" I generated xorg.conf for dual monitors (I pasted it below). When I use this configuration, any opengl program completely freezes the computer instantly.
    I have been looking for a while, but have not found any information that might lead to a solution. Does anyone here have any advice?

    Hello.
    I put my second monitor of a dual monitor set-up to the left of the main monitor - the one with the FC application, keyboard and mouse, etc. Trouble is the mouse kept hitting the left hand wall of my main monitor when I tried to send it to the second monitor. After a while I realized the mouse/computer thinks the second monitor is to its right, so I have to exit the right hand side of the main monitor to get to the one on the left.
    Is there any way to instruct FC and the mouse that the second monitor is on the left? Can the mouse be instructed to "pass" through the left hand wall of the main monitor rather than the right? Or must the second monitor always go the right of the main monitor?
    Thanks.

  • Help with burning large project on dual layer DVD

    Hi need help please.
    I am busy with a SD 16x9 project 215 minutes long so I am trying to use dual layer DVD's. The project has a serious menu setup (well I think so), it starts with a intro and go's into the main menu with sub menu's and so on. my problems is the following:
    if I burn a image all works well if I burn a disc from the image or using encore the menu once using a DVD player is very slow (the last half of the links on the time line) and some links get mixed up (if I press play dvd on the 3rd sub menu it somtimes starts in the correct place and somtimes it starts one link later).
    is this caused by the break in the layer and what can I do to correct it or to get it better.
    thanks
    Darren

    Are you using any motion menus? Have you exceeded the 1 gig limit for menus etc?
    I assumed 16:9 and forgot to look before I started posting: it does not look like it, but be sure you don't have more than 18 buttons per menu (if it is 16:9).
    With lots of short clips, break position should not be an issue. You can export to a folder and use imgburn which gives more control over layer breaks.
    Even though complex, it all looks straight forward, and, even though I can't see the image detail, it looks okay. The most likely issue in such a project is that Encore got lost as you made changes/corrections. Sometimes they can be fixed. Other times, the solution is a do over. Newer versions for Encore appear more robust (fewer problems and more likely to fix problems), but no versions appear to be free of such issues.

  • Sony CD-RW CRX140E external CD burner freezes

    Hallo,
    Since the latest update of OSX 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 I can't use my external Sony CD-RW CRX140E burner. Also in iTunes as in Finder when I try to burn files, the CD-RW CRX140E is not recognized. iTunes and Finder say that the empty CD is full. Sometimes my iMac freezes. Can you help me?

    I downloaded and installed again the MacOS X 10.4.8 patch. Afterwards it worked properly

  • DVD burner freezing at 5% complete

    I have PSE9, and have used it many times to store video on discs. However this project won't save (share). I have completed the project and it's all set to burn to a disc. It goes through the normal rendering process (usually takes about 90 mins) and then switches to the DVD burn screen, where it freezes at 5%. Have tried multiple times, and it always stops at 5%. Have left overnight, and still shows 5% in the morning, so system seems to be freezing. It's a 90 minute clip (in total), going onto a 4.7gb dvd. All info I have is the disc should take up to 120 mins of SD video (which this is). There are no error messages showing, and I have no idea where to start looking to see what the issue might be. Any ideas? I have also tried saving to a flash drive. This took almost 2 hours to render but did save, although when played on the TV 'fast movement' is jerky.

    "The problem therefore seems to be with 8.0.1. What is the best way to do a fresh install of Itunes 8.0.1 and do you think that this would rectify the problem."
    Before going through all that try the following:
    Open up a new account & try to burn through iTunes.
    Check your iTunes burning preferences and/or settings.
    Cross-Post over on one of the iTunes for Mac Forums where the iTune users hang out for some fresh ideas.

  • My iDVD burning freezes

    When it comes to burning my iDVD project it works fine until it reaches "coding sound". Then the application freezes and the only way out is to force ending the project. I´ve managed to burn the whole process earlier. Why not now? Can anybody give me a hint? Where do I start searching?

  • DVD  Burning Freezes @ writing the lead out !

    Has anyone experienced this? I burn disc all the time with no problem i have used all types of media, Apple disc are the best. but now it freeze at the lead out in DVDSP, Can any one help?

    I can't help, but want to add my thoughts: mine used to work fine, now, when I get to the end, I get error messages; I've tried both native burning to the G5 and Toast. Since this is your thread, I'm going to post a separate one, so as not to detract from those who may know your specific difficulty, but boy they sound alike and I wanted to just say -- it's seems to be not exactly an uncommon problem. These are my error messages, I'm curious if they are the same as yours:
    Toast:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x72, 0x03
    SESSION FIXATION ERROR - INCOMPLETE TRACK IN SESSION
    G5:
    This disc did not verify correctly and is unreliable. Because this disc is unreliable, discard it and try again using a new, blank disc. (Error code 0x80020063)

  • Disc burner freezes every time it trys to initialyze the c-d

    Hi
    I have a powermac g3 running on mac os 9.2.2
    I just installed a internal cd burner (LG CD-RW CED-8042b) that is supposed to be supported by disc burner. But everytime it tries to initialize a cd it freezes. What can I do?
    Thanks

    Accelerate your Mac has a searchable database here. There is a hack of the Apple iTunes burner extension that will allow most drives to burn CDs. If that doesn't work, you may have to get Toast 5, or upgrade to OSX and use Toast 6, or 7.
    Check out the Accelerate site before you do anything drastic.

  • Occasional Freezes on QS Dual 1ghz

    Hi,
    I recently acquired a dual 1ghz quicksilver that has had its RAM upgraded to 1.5 gig from the original 512. It has also had an extra USB/Firewire card installed in it. Every now and then it freezes up. A restart fixes it, but it is kinda annoying. I'm thinking that this might be a RAM issue but thought that i'd come here and ask what everybody else thought.
    -Thanks
    Andy Phipps

    Well i put the dual 1ghz in the 733 qs. and it blown the psu  i guess the cpu is bad i just put out anouther $50+ for a new psu but when i put the 733mhz qs cpu back in i forgot to put the fan and the heat sink back on the cpu still works i puled the plug very quick. but the thermal paste is now gone on it i will get new thermal paste for it. do i just put the thermal paste ontop of the cpu top or on the heat sink? but the video card works very good from the dual 1ghz in the 733mhz qs

    Yes.
    You just need the dual processor heatsink.
    Will the 64mb video-card from the QS Dual 1ghz work in the 733QS with a 32mb video-card now? and can i just put it in and will it work with no new drivers or jumpers?
    Yes.
    Plug and Play.
    will all of that overload the QS 733mhz psu?
    No.
    No worries at all.

  • Can't burn session on G5 dual 2.7

    I know you can't do a multi session with just the OSx finder but you should be able to with toast. I'm using a DVD+RW which the Pioneer driver says is ok. When I try to set the session burn in Advanced recording in Toast Titanium it's grayed out. Help.

    Me too. I have a new (3 week old) G5 and found that the 'sessions' box is greyed out when I used the Disk Utility or Toast to try and burn multi sessions.
    However, when I put in a CD-RW, I CAN burn multi sessions.!!!!!????? I am trying to determine if the problem is the SuperDrive or the media.
    What Brand of DVD-RW are you using? I was using Office Depot DVD-RW.

  • Blu Ray drive/burner can't write dual layer DVD - W500 Vista 64

    I recently did a clean Vista 64 Business install on a new hard drive. I pretty much have everything up and going, except the Blu Ray drive doesn't recognize that it can write dual layer DVDs. I ran Nero InfoTool and it, too, tells me that the drive cannot write dual layer DVDs. (Pretty much everything in InfoTool is checked, read and write, except all the HD-DVDs and the dual layer DVD write functions.) Does anyone have any ideas? My understanding is that the drive can write dual layer DVDs.

    I'll answer this with the same information that I posted at TPF:
    From: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70234
    Reads or writes data with speedy maximum data transfer rates of:
    * 16x maximum (writing to CD-R media)
    * 10x maximum (writing to CD-RW media)
    * 5x maximum (writing to DVD-RAM media)
    * 8x maximum (writing to DVD+/-R media)
    * 4x maximum (writing to DVD+/-RW media)
    * 2x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE SL media)
    * 1x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE DL media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-ROM, CD-R media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-RW media)
    * 8x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R SL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R DL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-RW/+RW media)
    * 5x maximum (reading DVD-RAM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-ROM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-R/RE SL/DL media)
    It appears that DL (dual layer) writing in DVD-R and DVD+R formats is not supported.

  • IMac DVD Burning Freeze - How to exit when stuck in ¨finishing burning...

    I just bought this brand new iMac (dec. 18) and EVERYTIME I try to burn data on a DVD (small file of less than 30Mb!) with Finder, the writting action takes less than 30 sec, but then the process is permanently stuck in the last ¨finishing burning...¨ step. Everytime, I need to manually reset (holding the power key for 6 sec!) to end this endless process loop. The funny thing is that when the iMac reboot, the DVD is prefectly OK and all data has been burn OK.
    I have the same kind of problem in iDVD. I tried to burn a very small (6 pictures only) DVD. The burning process went as planned, but the last step just never ended. After 30 min. I need to abort the process. As with ¨burning with finder¨, the DVD was however 100% correctly burnt.
    So, it means that I can burn DVD, but I need to force a reset of the iMAC or succeed to abort the last step of burning for every DVD I burn. Strange and annoying!
    Any body saw this problem? Could it be a Media type problem (cheap DVD brand)?

    Try restarting while holding the mouse down
