CD burning - (mp3 files) should you convert to AIFF (for quality)

Hello
With regard to eg iTunes mp3 songs for copying to CD.
For the best sound quality, do you keep them as mp3, or select conversion to AIFF, (ie at the burning stage).
Obviously AIFF is better quality, but I do not know if an mp3 converted to AIFF is better than an mp3 which is unchanged.
Thanks

Converting an MP3 to AIFF will just give you a larger file in a different format, it won't restore any quality to the track. Information is lost during the conversion to MP3 in the first place and that information cannot be added back. If you burn your MP3 playlist to an Audio CD the files will automatically be converted to AIFF and you'll be able to play that CD in a regular player, that's the only advantage there is, the tracks won't sound any better (and probably no worse).

    Hi kensb!
I would recommend that you attempt to reinstall all of the programs and components of iTunes on your machine and reinstall everything again. It can be tricky to get everything uninstalled, so we have an article that can help you make sure you uninstall everything:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
Specifically, when it comes to uninstalling, you will want to uninstall applications in this order:
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order. Then, restart your computer.
    iTunes
    QuickTime
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended effects.
You will then want to follow the links in those articles to download the latest package of iTunes software for your computer and install again from there. Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

  • How do I burn MP3 files to CD at a lower bitrate?

I'm a newbie to Mac and to iTunes, so pardon me if this is a frequently asked question. As a former user of Windows Media Player, I am used to being able to burn my MP3 files to CD at a lower bitrate (128) than what the MP3 files saved on my computer are (320). In WMP you tell it what bitrate you want the files encoded at, it then re-encodes them, burns them to CD and then deletes the re-encoded files from the hard drive.
Am I missing something in iTunes or is this not possible? It looks like I might be able to do each step of these steps manually, but I'm not quite sure how to save the converted files to a different folder than the originals. If this is not possible in iTunes, can someone recommend a program that will do this. Thanks!

You can easily burn them into artist folders onto the CD (which is not what you previously asked).
    Create the playlist.
Sort on Album or Artist and then burn it.
The songs will be put into Albums or Artists.

  • Copying/Burning mp3 files to CD (80 minutes)

I've been trying to copy an .mp3 file that is exactly 79 mins and 58 secs long to CD (2 secs shy of 80 mins). Every time I try I receive an error stating the destination disc will not fit onto the 80 minute CD-R. Is there a reason for this and if so is there a way around it?

Ok... First I tried to use the .mp3 file to burn it within iTunes. Then it said it couldn't burn the play list which got me thinking iTunes was interpreting the entire play list. So I moved the individual .mp3 file to a new playlist and tried. Still iTunes wouldn't allow the .mp3 to be burned onto the audio CD and asked me if I wanted to span the discs. So I created another play list which contained the smaller version of the converted .mp3 -> .wav file. It worked flawlessly and in 2 mins the entire CD was complete.
So there must be something to do with the size of the file(s) as well as the amount of time of the files for Audio CDs.
You maybe right about it shortening the file during the conversion but I tried twice and came out with the same exact amount of time for the .wav files. This leads me to believe both the size of the file and the amount of time (at least within iTunes) must be the issue.
I also (previously) attempted to burn it using Roxio's Toast but had no success burning the large .mp3 file to an audio CD that way either.
iTunes did give me the option to split the file between multiple discs but this is not the result I was looking for...
Either way.. The .wav file is now on an audio CD and I played the entire disc and it worked fine. I didn't even notice a difference in the sound quality between the lower 32 khz sample rate and the discarded 44Khz sample rate. Both the .mp3 and .wav sounded near the same - I did leave it at 16 bit stereo though.
So, problem solved for now I guess. Now, I need to burn the 2nd disc which shouldn't be a problem as the files do not span the total amount of time or file size of a standard 80min/700mb CD.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. In an .mp3 file the data is compressed; with the .wav file the data is not compressed and is purely raw data. So turning .mp3 files into an audio CD does not necessarily mean it will fit on a standard CD even if the time allotment states it will fit via .mp3 files.
I never ran into this issue before but it's kind of interesting how it all worked out.

  • Can you save an mp3 file that you receive as an attachment to an email?

Can you save an mp3 file you receive as an attachment to an email?

    Irwinwilliam-
With other attachments, you can press and hold on the attachment icon.  One of the options that may appear is "Open In".  Choosing that, any App that is capable of reading the attachment should show up as a choice.  When opening the document that way, a copy is transferred to the App.  I have not tried with an MP3 file.
For MP3, I think the Music App should be a choice.  If so, the file should then appear with your other music.
If an inappropriate App appears in "Open In", you may be able to use it as a conduit to transfer the attachment to your computer.  Run iTunes on your computer with the iPad connected.  Select the iPad under DEVICES, and click on Apps at the top of the window.  Scroll down to File Sharing and select that App.  If successful, your document will appear to the right in the Documents window, where you can select it and Save As.

  • When I burn mp3 files they appear as folders

when I attempt to burn the songs from mp3 files from 4 separate albums from an iTunes playlist they show up on the disc as 4 separate folders.  when the album plays on my player only the first folder (the first album) plays and the CD stops.  the songs from the other 3 albums won't play.  The iTunes playlist doesn't show that they are separated by album.  Very confused.

    Rik Marsh,
When burning an MP3 CD with iTunes, you can have your choice of Artist folders, Album folders, or no folders (which is the one you want).
It all depends how the playlist is sorted before burning.  See this guide:
iTunes: How to set the play order of songs on an MP3 CD

  • Burning mp3 files with SuperDrive - first 10 sec of each song missing

    Hello music fans,
When I burn mp3 songs to a CD  using SuperDrive on a MacBook Air (mid 2012), the first 10 seconds of every song are not playing.
This had never happened to me before using other drives. I tried all sorts of tricks, disks and programs and everything points to the SuperDrive. When I play the disc on the computer  all is fine. The issue shows when playing the disc on a Sony mp3 disc player which usually never had such issues before when I used Tiger and another burner.
FYI burning regular CDs works OK.
Does anybody have this problem as well?
    Thanks,
    Marin

As Chris already answered, Copy To Play Order basically locks down the play order of the playlist so it shows up that way in the iPod. If you simply sort the playlist with a certain header in iTunes, once the playlist goes to the iPod, the iPod doesn't know or respect that sort order. But if you Copy To Play Order, then you lock down the order of the playlist.
I am sticking with iTunes 6 simply because it isn't broken, so I have no reason to upgrade and risk issues. Plus, upgrading iTunes requires me to also upgrade QuickTime to version 7 which presents a number of potential issues with my system. Mac OS 10.3.x does not always play nicely with QT7 and I don't want to risk not being able to properly use other QT dependent Apps like iTunes, iMovie, and iDVD. Right now my system is perfectly stable and operating very nicely. Since I am not interested in dropping $130, or whatever it is, to upgrade the Mac OS, I am not interested in upgrading QT or iTunes and potentially FUBARing my setup.
Same with my iPod. My fifth generation iPod still uses Firmware version 1.0 (the original version). I think they are up to something like v1.2.x now. Again, the iPod works perfectly so why update? Especially since many of the updates only add features to support other Apple products I don't want and in some cases even remove features I do want (being able to toggle the LCD backlight using the menu button for example).

  • [Help]Playing MP3 files with Juk have to wait for 1 hr to hear voice

I am not sure how long should wait, but difinately longer than 10min. If you are playing a playlist, you have to wait a long time for next song...
    Observations:
    1. You can hear voice after all, that means the hardware and codec is working properly.
    2. You can play the mp3 file with smplayer without difficulty. that means the filesystem/storage hardware should'nt be problematic.
    3. When waiting for playing songs, the CPU usage of Juk is remaining on about 3%. I believe it is a reasonable value and does not indicating any problem of the program.
Have anybody here got this problem before? Help!

in case your phonon backend is gstreamer, change it to xine. that's what is recommended by amarok devs.

  • Sun Filer - can you automate ACL permissions for all shares?

Does the Sun Filer have an automation tool that will allow me to change all share permissions?
As I'm a windows admin, does the filer have a powershell snapin?
I havent been able to find much on the internets in regards to this topic.
    Thanks

So... chmod -R on its own doesn't do anything, obviously. chmod +a returns "Failed to set ACL on file 'Tests': Operation not supported." Sure enough, the volume has "ignore ownership" enabled. I'm pretty sure I don't have ACLs running on that volume.
    1. Does "ignore ownership" mean ACLs get turned off?
    2. Other than that little switch in Finder, how do I control the ACLs volume-wide? I have neither fsaclctl nor fsctl on that server. Do I need to copy fsaclctl from a Leopard client?
    3. The deeper question is, do I want to enable ACLs? All the employees store all their files on that volume (it's a small company); will ACLs wreak havoc? Aside from official documentation, you sometimes get the feeling that ACLs are broken altogether.
As for a 3rd party content management system, I need file-level access for users. A tool that manages the file storage, controls and audits access for end users, and avoids filename collisions and related issues sounds to my like AFP and Mac OSX Server.... Is there any 3rd party tool that can do that and supports things like resource forks?

Could you make a explain for this condition? Do I need to add ( mirror) another 2 control file into ASM?
The Oracle recommands that at least 2 contril files( best 3 files) in different place. This is true for signle instance.
How about RAC that database locates in ASM?
    Please help me!!
    Jim

You are fine using the standard three controlfiles in ASM, four is fine too, but it does not need to be tied to the number of instances as all the instances in a RAC database use the same controlfile (and its copies). ASM knows the controlfile type and will stripe each one in 128k pieces across as many volumes as it can. I much prefer to have my controlfiles in ASM, it prevents accidental deletion and generally makes DBA life easier.
