CD burning with disk utility - format and size for 800 MB - 90 minutes CD

Hi Support,
I'm trying to burn a CD with 800 MB (90 minutes) using disk utility. When I create a new empty image I can select the size. Unfortunately there is no option for a 90 minutes CD. When I create the image with 800 MB and I try to burn it, disk utility tells me that the image is too big. So my first question is what is the maximum size for such a CD?
Next question, which format should I use? When creating a new empty image, I have the options "Beschreibbares Image" and "Mitwachsendes Image" (I have a Germann OS). But I dont't have the option to create a "CD/DVD Master", which is availabe, when I create an image from a folder. What I have to do, is to convert the image afterwards to a "CD/DVD Master". This is very circumstantial.
So my questions are:
1. Is there an easier way o create an empty disk image for a CD/DVD?
2. Is the format "CD/DVD Master" required to burn a CD. It is also possible to burn images with other formats. What is the advantage/disadvantage of this format?
3. Which format is required to use the CD in a Windows computer or a standalone CD/DVD player? The volume format must probably "MS-DOS Filesystem" in this case?
4. Is it possible to burn multi session CD's in this case?
5. Is there a comprehensive documentation somewhere available for this burning issue on Mac? The help of disk utility is really not enough.
Thanks for answers and hints Thomas

Hi thmayr!
Although the original instructions were for a 700 MB disc, perhaps the article linked to below, could be helpful.
From "Macworld" Feb 2005 issue p.90 Link To Article. Scroll to the second tip on the page: "Unix Tip of the Month: Utilize Extra Space on CD-Rs".
Content:
Create a new folder in the Finder.
Drag everything you want to burn, up to 700 MB, into the folder.
Open Terminal and type cd ~/Desktop
Press the Enter key. This changes Terminal's active directory to your user's Desktop folder.
Type hdiutil makehybrid -o myburn.iso (There's a space after the o in iso, and myburn can be any name you choose) DON'T press Enter
Switch to the "Finder"
Drag & drop the folder you created onto the Terminal window. Terminal should fill in the full path to the folder.
Press Enter. Enter key will then execute the command.
What you have done is used the hdiutil Unix command to create a hybrid disk image named myburn.iso (you can choose whatever name you like, in place of myburn, but use iso for the extension.
You should see the message "Creating hybrid image" in your Terminal window, as well as an indication of the task's progress.
When finished, you should see a disk image called myburn.iso on your Desktop.
You can use Disk Utility to burn this image, or you can type
hdiutil burn ~/Desktop/myburn.iso in Terminal
Insert a blank CD-R when prompted, and then just wait until it's done.

  • Best format to burn with disk utility?

Can anyone suggest the best video format(s) to use if I want to burn a video file to DVD using disk utility, (if there's even a difference) and secondly, if I need to make a DVD (best quality possible) that auto plays when inserted, will Roxio Toast or some other program give me better results than IDVD, or should I not waste the money?
    Thanks for any help.
    IMAC - OSX 10.4.11

Unless Toast has improved significantly, iDVD does a better job encoding.
On the other hand, Toast does a bunch of other useful things (like allow you to use R/W disks) that it is a worth while investment.

  • Can't play cd burned with disk utility

i have followed the the directions on duplicating a cd on this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1945.html
but the cd that i burned is not recognized by itunes or a regular cd player. can anybody offer any insight into what i may be doing wrong? i have burned cds using itunes and have had no problems with them in my player or computer, but i wanted to use disk utility for cds that i don't want on my hard drive.
    cheers,
    greg

    gregod,
I ran across this sequence of instructions that may help when you are using Disk Utility to copy a disc:
    4. From the menubar select File->New->Disk image from disk...
    5. In the Convert window that appears select where you want to save the image - the Desktop is as good a place as any.
    6. Again, in the Convert window select DVD/CD Master from the Image Format drop down menu
    7. Click Save
I think the choice of DVD/CD Master needs to be made.
Hope this works. Let me know.

  • Known problem with Disk Utility formatting Windows NT drive ?

I have had a strange problem while formatting a newly purchased Iomega USB (Seagate) with version 11.1 (252.4) of Disk Utility (OS 10.5.8). The drive was NTSF and I wanted Mac OS extended. The first attempt failed, unfortunately I didn't note the exact message. I tried again and this time D.U. was stuck on on a wait progress bar with message "not a multiple of 4". Disk Warrior reported disk too severly damaged. Only Drive Genius could properly format the drive. Anyone knows what happened?

I'm not sure what caused the problem you observed, but did you first change the partition scheme to a Mac-friendly one before you tried to do the reformat?
    Thanks.
Well, no I didn't and I simply applied "erase to Mac OS extended". Maybe there is a change from earlier versions of D.U. So far and as far as I am aware, D.U. would erase a DOS disk and by default choose the Apple partition scheme. But this default setting could have been changed to GUID with the Intel Macs, or even to DOS if the drive is DOS. This option is hidden in further options in the partition settings along with the DOS partition scheme and unless you decide to partition the drive and not just erase it, it is not visible. As a matter of facts, Drive Genius offers the choice between Mac OS and GUID as you erase the disk.
So this could be the culprit, if for instance D.U. erased to Mac OS extended but kept the DOS partition scheme. It seems unlikely though that the developers didn't take that error possibility into account to include a warning of some sort... but that's what I wanted to make sure.

  • Unique title for MY_GREAT_DVD burned with Disk Utility

composed movie in Final Cut Express 4.0.1->sent to IMovie 09 for chapters->to IDVD 09->to Disk Utility for. img file before burning DVD. [BTW, had some "multiplex errors" until I took periods (decimal points) out of chapter marker titles].
Problem is that even though the file is named *.img in the finder the volume created is ALWAYS called "MYGREATDVD" and that's the title of the DVD icon after the actually DVD is inserted into drive.
Anyway to get the DVD to be named what I call it???

"MYGREATDVD" is the name of the DVD as assigned (by default) in iDVD.
However whenever I burn a disc image to Dvd-R, nine times out of ten I'll also use Roxio Toast. And here's where one is allowed to change the name. At least that's where I normally address this type of change/s. If you don't already own Toast, then one can also substitute apple's disc utility for this purpose as well.
Another option might be to go to the menu in iDvd, select Project, then Project Info, then in the top block, next to Disc Name:, type in your desired disk name. I hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Problems with disk utility, diskimagemounter, and CD drive...?

I have three problems that seem, at least tangentially, related:
My CD drive won't open from the us - I drag a disk to the trash, or click the eject icon, and nothing happens physically - the disk disappears from the desktop and the filesystem but the drive remains disturbingly nonchalant.
Disk Utility won't open - it opens, then sits there spinning supposedly looking up the disks; but force quit simple closes the window and makes the related two tasks disappear from the AM - the icon remains in the dock.
DiskImageMounter does not work - it will scan and verify a disk image, but it freezes on the 'Attaching' stage.
I've refreshed my computer multiple times, but these problems have remaind - even through a complete 7-way write... so I am puzzled as to what I can do about it. It is quite annoying to open up Toast just to mount a DMG.

  • Disk Utility: Reporting wrong size for disk after a restore

First up, hardware is G4(PPC) running OS 10.4.11
I've just purchased and installed a new 500G drive for this old workhorse as an upgrade for the previous secondary drive. Set it up with a single partition, JHFS+. No problems so far. Went to copy the files from the old drive to this new one and thought, "Why don't I try that handly looking Restore button?". +Yeah, apparently a bad idea+. The old drive is 120GB. I set its (only) volume to be the source and my newly created partition to be the target; set it going and left it alone. All appeared to be well when I came back, until I checked the available space on the new drive.
Disk Utility now reports that this new, 500G drive has a Total Capacity of 128G (137,438,952,960 bytes).
    *Remedies tried so far:*
    - I've tried reformatting/partitioning, but wasn't able to convince it otherwise. Also tried it booting from an install DVD just in case that made a difference.
    - I downloaded a utility from the drive manufacturer which I managed to get on to an ancient, dusty w2k box. Reformatted the drive with 2 NTFS partitions. This seemed to do the trick as they both mounted when I rebooted the Mac. However, when I went to reformat the volumes to JHFS I noticed that the total disk size was still being reported as 128G. Still, they reformatted fine and I transfered my data to them. On a reboot, though, the Mac decided that it didn't want to see the second partition and only shows me disk1s10, ignoring the second partition I set up.
    - I have an identical, empty drive to the 500G. I thought I might be able to use the Restore "feature" to trick it back. Set up the second 500G in a firewire box, ran the restore from the empty volume to the screwed up one. No dice.
I thought that OS X ignored any sort of BIOS info on a drive and merely looked at the physical media. Is this correct? Does it store this gathered info in a file somewhere that I can delete?
*This is a call for help.*
I have no problems playing with the command line as root, if that's the sort of suggestions you've got. I just thought I'd ask here before I fdisk/dd etc from new500 to old500. Geometry of the new500 is 60801/255/63.

Thanks! That sounds like a good short term solution for a backup.

  • Dual Layer DVD's not burning with Disk Utility

I successfully created two dual layer DVD's with a disk image that I created in iDVD. Checked both of those disks in a DVD player and both work fine. Now trying to burn more copies with the same procedure, same disk image file, same media manufacturer and all are failing. Any ideas? I can still successfully burn short videos on regular DVD's from iDVD so my burner has not completely failed. I had created a disk image out of the material that I need on the dual layer DVD because it's about 2 hours of video and iDVD was ejecting the disk too early without burning.

Sounds like the burner may have failed. It can fail in a way that only larger items cannot burn. Take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them check it out

  • What is the best format and size for a logo in a flash project?

I have this flash project in which i animate a logo from big to small, the logo in the big state looks pretty good but when the flash movie reduces the image the logo tends to pixelate(i dont know if this term is correct).
    Thanks,

That is what happens when you change the size of an image.
The best format for a logo is vector.  Then you can change its size, rotation, etc without any distortion or pixelation.
If you are unable to go with a vector graphic, try to use several images of varying sizes and switch between them as needed to recreate the tween, or, try a PNG and hope the pixelation isn't too bad.

  • Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.
    HW Specs:
    Drive: G-Drive Mobile USB/FW 750GB

    Exchanged drive. Works now.

  • Why don't I see the log when I repair permissions with Disk Utility

I'm having issues with Safari hanging or bogging down to a snail's pace lately. I have tried several times to repair permissions with Disk Utility. It runs for several minutes, but shows nothing in the log even though the box is checked to show details. I've never seen this before. I don't know if Disk Utility is doing it's job or not....
    Any thoughts?

If the progress bar goes to the end, then you don't have any permissions needing repair. The fact that Safari is slowing down has nothing really to do with permissions.

  • Formatted SD card with disk utility, broke the card.

I just bought a 4GB SD card for my camera. At first it couldn't recognize it at all but when I connected the camera (with the card) to my mac and formatted it using Disk Utility app as 1GB plus free space the camera could work with the card. When I decided to format it as 2GB plus free space the Disk Utility hung and I force quit it. After that neither Disk Utility nor camera can see the card. All menus in Disk Util are grayed out. I tried 'sudo diskutil' from terminal (the card is still mounted in /dev folder) but still get a message 'permission denied'. Does it mean that I completely damaged my newly bought 4GB card and waisted $30+? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The camera wouldn't recognize the card at first, I guess just because it was too big for it. After I formatted it as 1GB it was fine, as I already mentioned. I was wondering is there any other than diskutil low-level formatting software I can use on the card.

  • When burning iso with disk utility, the audio is off!

I have an ISO file that works fine when I mount it or watch it on VLC.   If I burn it using windows (in parallels) it is fine...
But when I burn it with disk utility, the audio is off by a second or so.  I can't figure this out since it is a disk image.  there shouldn't be a way to dissociate the audio.  I did have a previous version of the iso file that was off..  Is it possible that I am trying to burn an iso file and it is burning a mounted version from before (even though I am choosing this from the finder?)
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
I though macs just work.  Seems a bit more complicated.

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

  • Formatting with Disk utility

I want to format an external FW HD so it can be read on a Mac AND PC, how do I do this with Disk Utility.
    Thanks in advance.

In the Disk Utility, choose the MS-DOS option when formatting the drive; this will create a FAT32 drive, which can be read and written in both Mac OS X and Windows.

  • Burning .iso with Disk Utility (Mac)?

Anyone doing this? I read it can be done but I just tried and it didn't work.
It's been a long 72 hours or so trying different ways to get my 82-minute 3D feature to various bluray permutaions (i.e. side by side, red-cyan, and of course, 2D) (saving the MVC multiplexing for another day).
Anyway, I was hoping I could just make an .iso image in Encore and then burn multiple copies with Disk Utility. Some sources say it can be done, but it didn't work on my 10.8 iMac. Thanks, all!
