CD drive doesn't work

When I insert a CD into the drive, it just grinds around for about 1/2 minute and then pops the CD back out. Do I need to get a new drive or what?

Here is a copy of the disc burning area.
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104:

Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes

I tried a DVD and it does play. The problem is that what I really need is the CD part.
I decided to try a CD again since the DVD did work, but it popped it out again. I'm afraid this probably means there is a hardware problem, don't you think?
Incidentally, thank you for taking the time to help me w/ this issue. I really appreciate it.

  • What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?

QuestionWhat can I do when if my laptop CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?
AnswerNote: For help with this issue in Windows 7, please see this article.
To get your CD or DVD drive working correctly, try these suggestions in the order listed.
    Reinstall the Driver
Hold the Windows key and press the 'x' key to open a menu in the lower-left. In this menu, select "Device Manager." Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Right-click the entry for the CD/DVD drive nested under "DVD/CD-ROM drives," then select "Uninstall." Finally, restart the computer. The computer will reinstall the drivers for the drive.
    Power Cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with some hardware problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Unplug all wires and peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery). If the model does not have a removable battery, check your user's guide to determine if you have a pinhole reset on the bottom. If you do, press this.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
    Reattach the battery if removed.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.
Connect the other end of the AC adaptor to your computer.
Start the computer and test the drive

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

1.optical drive doesn't work, hd is earesed and i need to install os x on my macbook pro.
how to do it on internet?
2.already tried connected via lan cable, but folder with question mark appeared. What could be problem(DHCP was enabled)
3.Is it possible to do it in target disk mode through my even older powerbook G4
    4. Is it possible to do it with flash memory , and how to download the stuff on?
    thanks in advance
    Allterro

If your Macbook Pro (MBP) came preinstalled with OS X Lion (10.7), you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall it.
You will need an Internet connection.
Restart your Mac using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server and load their Recovery HD.
From the OS X Utilities menu, select Reinstall OS X. You should see a Lion logo to the left of this option.
If your MBP came preinstalled with OS X Snow Leopard you will need the DVD and an external CD/DVD drive to use to install it.
You may also be able to put your MBP into Target Mode with another Mac running a version of OS X that is compatible with your MBP. From that other Mac download OS X from the App Store and point to your MBP (Target Mode) to install to. I've never tried this but it sounds like it might work.

  • Brand new Mac Pro.. CD DRIVE DOESN'T WORK!

I just set up my new Mac Pro yesterday, and the cd/dvd drive doesn't work. It worked once, when I was installing a printer, but it made a really bad noise, and now whenever I put any cd or dvd in, it doesn't even recognize it or react.
I don't know what to do.
I know I have a warranty so somebody from apple should be able to help me, but I can't even reach anybody on the customer support phone number.
Does anybody know a way to fix this?

Try depressing the SMC RESET button for 10 seconds, small round button under drive #4 in the rear (with unit unplugged).

  • Kernal freaks out and cd drive doesn't work.

I had trouble booting up my imac and it says something about the kernal not working during the boot up stage. I took out one of the sticks of ram and it will boot up fine. Does that mean that my ram is bad.
Also my cd drive doesn't work. I just put in a cd and it spits it out. I tried all sorts of cd's and it has the same results.
Please let me know what I can do.

If it works with different ram, then that means the ram that's in there when it won't boot is likely faulty. The kernal panics are likely due to the bad ram. Return and/or exchange it and double check to make sure you got the right type of ram. You want PC2-5300 (667MHz) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721
Secondly the drive issue sound like a failure of it to work al together. If you're under warranty I'd call Apple to arrange a repair, or take it into an Apple Store or Authorised Service Provider.

  • My cd driver doesn't work to install new hp printer

I bought a new HP Printer ENVY 4500 I can't  use it from my Mac 0S as the CD/DVD driver doesn't work
    .How do I  conect it?

    Hi,
Regardless the CD issue, I affraid that the printer is incompatible with Leopard (OS X 10.5) but require OS X 10.6 or a later version.
You may find its System Requirement listed below:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-4500-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/5304875/model/5304876/d...
I would suggest upgrading your operating system or contacting the retail and replace it with another model which is compatible with your operating system.

  • CD Drive Doesn't Work, Please Help

Recently my Macbook was running really slowly so I restored my Macbook to factory settings. Now my CD Drive doesn't work. I can't burn CD's from iTunes or use cd's for anything. Please help!

    HI Yash,
After re-installing the OS; did you check for software updates? If they're are any you may want to install them and see if it fixes your issue. I know some times things stop working after an OS install if the software updates are not installed.
Can you still boot to the install disk? (by using option boot)
If you can't option boot to the install disk, you might want to try a SMC reset. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
if you still can't you may want to try a NVRAM reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    If that doesn't help you could try the apple troubleshooting super drive article;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2801
if you can option boot to the install disk; but can't see disks when your booted to the built in hard drive, you might want to try a safeboot. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

  • MBP late 2011 disc driver doesn't work

Before I updated the OS to 10.9.1, my disc driver worked well and I usedbootcamp to set up WIN 7 for several times. But afterwards, when I tried to reset the bootcamp win7, I did like I always did, delete the former os harddrive part, then I started to reset the win7, I found that the disc driver doesn't work.
When I insert a disc, it would be push out whatever disc I insert, os disc, cd, dvd. It just doesn't work.
I don't know if it is broken or just beacuse of the new 10.9.1
    I need some help.
Thanks for you all who are willing to see this.

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

OK, so start with creating a mount point, like
    sudo mkdir -p /media/dvd
-- and then feed your drive with a disk, and see what happens. (I suppose it will mount it automatically, but lets see...)
Edit: Just in case your system needs a cdrom directory, you can create a symlink to your /media/dvd,  like this:
    sudo ln -s /media/dvd /media/cdrom

  • External Combo Drive doesn't work after installing Snow Leopard

This Mini was bought used with a defective combo drive. I purchased a "No-Brand" external Combo Drive (USB connected and powered) off eBay. Everything worked fine under Leopard. I used the external drive to install Snow leopard but could not eject the DVD at the completion of the installation process. I manually ejected the DVD and discovered the external drive now doesn't work with either DVD's or CD"s.
Any ideas what the problem is?
    Ken

Mark this up to "cockpit' trouble on my part. The external combo drive now works.

  • External hard drive doesn't work on any other machine but my Mac since I connected it to the Mac

My external hard drive used to work on any machine. I watched movies on my tv, putted the movies on the hard drive using my pc. Since I connected it to my new MacBook Air, it doesn't connect to anything else anymore! I hope it's something in settings witch I accedentely clicked on (something with privacy so it can only connect to my Mac or something like that). Does anyone know how this happend/how to fix it?
PS. Maybe its important, I use it for Time Machine as well. Before I used that, it deleted my whole hard drive whitch really ****** me off. Now I got new stuff on it. Maybe my Mac is just claiming it to keep the hard disk for itself?

    One can't read the other.
Just to be clear Mac's can read/write FAT32 but windows cannot use OS X Extended. So to use a drive on both systems it needs to be formatted FAT32
FAT32 does have limitations and possibly the best solution is to use NTFS, a more modern, robust filesystem. The drawback here is that OS X does not natively read NTFS so a third party kernel extension is needed.

  • Portege Z930 - Display Driver doesn't work correctly

    Hello,
we have a Portege Z930 with Windows 7 64 bit in use where the Intel Display Driver seem to work incorrectly.
First problem is the slow presentation on display - if we open a picture (simple JPG) and move the window, the window frame will break during the move and be shown very bizarre.
Next we installed a dynadock U3.0 docking station for using two external displays additionally. This works even worse. For the docking station we used the driver from the CD included on delivery, and we connect it over an USB 3.0 slot.
On booting switching onto the 2 displays instead of the internal notebook display doesn't work - so we use the workaround of using an extended desktop over all 3 displays (2 externals and the internal notebook display as third).
In Internet Explorer we had to switch off GPU Rendering and use Software Rendering instead because otherwise we observed critical misfunctions on the external displays (having 2 windows open the display froze or couldn't show moving windows). Nevertheless the display is not satisfactioning.
We already tried 3 different versions of the recommendet Intel Driver which is also offered by Toshiba for download; we loaded it there and also 2 more versions (one newer, one older) from Intel directly.
So how can we get that working correctly?
    Thanks in advance and regards,
    N. Cochems

Most importantly. make sure you have Win7 Service Pack 1 installed. New notebooks have problems running in win7 RTM (no service packs).
Sounds like Windows is using the standard VGA driver instead of the Intel driver. Uninstall all the display drivers from Control Panel->Programs and Features then go to the Toshiba website and install the Intel Chipset Utility then the Intel Display Driver, then go to DisplayLink.com and install the latest DisplayLink driver for the dynadock. The new DisplayLink v7.xx driver fixes many problems found in the v6.xx drivers.
Double check that the Intel drivers are installed correctly in Device Manager.
