CD Drive/DVD Burner spontaneously quit working

Just the other day, my DVD reader/burner started acting up -- it's about 18 months old, and afaik out of warranty -- though I can't work out what's wrong or whether it's actually at fault.
Installed Flight Simulator 2004 the other week in WinXP, rebooted, attempted to play FS2004, but the dvd drive would no longer read that disc, or any. Since then, I'm sure i've watched a dvd movie on it fine, so the problem seems erratic.
Not a software problem, the drive exhibits the same behaviour under win/lin -- keeps spinning up, but never actually manages to read anything back, don't even get the disc name.
Here's the odd bit -- I tried another cable, but it still doesnt work, so it's not the cable. Tried another drive that is known to work, it failed with the same symptoms... repeatedly spinning up, but never actually reading anything.
Any suggestions as to the cause or possible solutions? I'm itching to get Arch64 installed
I'm about to try on another IDE channel...

Just a shot in the dark, but when I first set up my system I had a lot of problems, mostly with video cards, but not limited to just that. cd and dvd writer would sometimes not work. Everything was just speratic, working only sometimes. Finally I discovered I was having device/irq conflicts due to my bios. experimenting with kernel paremeters finally solved it. The magic one for me was pci=conf1

  • DVD burning no longer working.

    Hi there,
I am not quite sure if it is since the 10.4.9 update or the re-install I did a month ago, but DVD burning with Toast 7 or the Finder no longer work.
I can burn CD's with my internal NEC DVD RW ND-3520A drive and I can play DVD's just fine too, but when I try to burn a disc I get this error:
"Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022"
I am using Phillips DVD-R media that I have used before, the firmware on the DVD drive is at 1.04 there is a new Firmware updater but you need a Win2K machine.
But the Firmware update has been out for a while and I have been burning happily until now.
Anyone on the forum have an idea as to what the issue is?
    All the best,
    Anil.

    Hi Dak,
Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately I have been using Patchburn for a few years now. I had to reinstall my system because of some dodgy software from Vodafone. I upgraded to 10.4.9 from 10.4.8, just like every good OS X user.
It burns fines with CD's it just seems to be a problem with DVD's, maybe it is a media issue, might try a few other brands and see if that helps. again thanks for your advice.
    Anil.

  • Extra Hard Drive / DVD Burner Setup

I need an Opion, Would this idea Work,: (I would get rid of all of my dumb pcs ) Sorry in advance for the big post.
I want to buy 2 External Enclosures and a USB 2.0 Hub for my HDs and connect them to the mac mini:
*A SYBA SY-U2F-3SL Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 Combo External Enclosure With an 30GB 7200 RPM MaXtor ATA133 EIDE HD formated in MAC OS Journaled for Extra Space. (I Already have the HD) (I Would use it in FireWire 400 For Best Preformance)
*A MASSCOOL UE210 External Enclosure With An IBM TravleStar DARA 212000 4200 RPM 12GB 2.5" Laptop HD formarted in FAT32 for Windows Transfers. (I Already have the HD)
*A 40GB USB 2.0 LaCie HD formated in MAC OS Journaled for Extra Space. (I Already have this)
*A BYTECC USB 2.0 External Enclosure With an ATA133 EIDE NEC DVD+/-RW Drive for Burning DVDs (I Already Both of these)
    *An i-rocks IR-4300-S USB 2.0 4-port hub
I will Buy this all for under $80 from Newegg.com.
    The Links Are Here:
    The MASSCOOL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145751
    The Syba: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817186104
    The iRocks: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817186104
My questions is, is it worth spending the money to have an extra 82GB of HD space, get rid of my PC for ever, and be able to burn DVDs?

Well, I bought the MASSCOOL and the USB Hub just about 5 min ago. So next week, when I get the money, I'll buy the Syba. Also, Peggy, the Syba is FireWire 400, but there wasn't a 2.5" enclosures that used FireWire for under $15 Shipped, so USB 2.0 will do. Also, the rest of the USB devices I had already owned, so it wouldn't have made a differance. I will report back when I order the Syba, and when everything is installed. Also, I am out of USB ports, so I am going to order a seccond hub with the Syba, I will get the same one BTW.

  • DVD burner no longer working on Touchsmart 600

I hope this is the correct forum. I have a Touchsmart 600 series and my DVD burner no longer reads DVDs or CDs, either digital, music or video. When I attempt to burn a DVD through Windows Media Player, WMP goes through all the motions of burning it but the CD is still blank. It had been working intermittently up through September and stopped working in November. The DVD burner didn't always work since I got the machine 2 years ago. Sometimes it would stop reading the disk but would work after a reboot. Now it won't even do that.
I have updated the drivers for it and it didn't seem to have an effect.
    OS: Windows 7

  • My LG40 DVD burner does not work with iMac. Pls advice

It is a portable DVD writer. According to LG system requirements are Windows 7 or Mac X v10.54 or higher. Can´t open files burnt on my old Mac and not possible to burn files from iMac.

Both Rudegar and Babowa are correct!
You need to supply your own burning software for your iMac to burn discs from your new external optical drive.
Since Apple doesn't integrate optical drives into many of their Mac models any longer, Apple doesn't supply any type of disc burning software any longer.
Older versions of the iLife suite of apps (iLife '09 or '11) have a compatible version of iDVD.
You would need to purchase either of these.
Another purchased CD/DVD burning software is Roxio Toast.
OR there is the free, open source optical disc burning software, Burn.

  • External dvd burner no longer works

    hello
recently upgraded from leopard to snow leopard. i have two macs in an audio studio where the computers, their hard drives, and some other gear is one room away from me in a machine room. this cuts down on noise for me in the control room of the studio.
i've used external dvd burners for the two studio macs. both have been working great. these burners have worked fine under both tiger and leopard. suddenly, after the snow leopard install, neither works. i have never installed any special drivers for these, the os has always properly handled them.
i have found that if i insert a disc, i can power the burner off and then back on and then the disc will mount. it will not mount just by inserting it per normal. also, cd burning software doesn't see this drive. it's not a choosable option in the menu.
this is a major pita. i don't think that there is anything else that i can do here. i'm hoping it's clear to apple that this is an area of concern. firewire devices ought to be able to plug in and work, and the os which has handled this so well in the past is not doing it right now.
i've tried some basic troubleshooting, like swapping firewire cables, but have realized via these forums than many others are having similar issues. i'd love to have this working asap.

well, i have two external dvd drives, and both are firewire only. and neither one works anymore. it's quite a bummer. i'd love to see them working again. i kind of need them. i sure didn't expect this to be something that stopped working in snow leopard.

  • Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD burner doesn't work

This burner works fine on all my colleagues lenovo thinkpads but won't work on my Yoga. Very frustrating! Any suggestions

    Hello,
Is the external DVD drive plugged into two USB ports on the computer?  One USB port may not provide enough current to power the drive.

  • DVDs burned in iDvd work in other devices, but not on my Mac!

Strange. I switched to iDvd 6. Now I am having troubles I never had before (and it isn't due to bad disks -- I use the same ones burned successfully with iDvd 5).
Burning to disk produces a "NDIF disk image" -- not what I would have expected. The burned disks work in my DVD player for the TV, and even work in a PC! But they aren't able to be read by my Mac! I get a "this disk is in a format your Mac doesn't recognize" type of error. Or if the disk goes in, it doesn't show up on the desktop.
I have tried just about everything. Burning directly to disk produces the same effect.
As a note, the Disk Utility recognizes there is a disk there!
Any suggestions? I'd really like burn DVDs that are readable on my Mac again (as well as everything else).

Does anyone have an answer to this individual's problem?
I have been successfully using iDVD burning disk images and direct to DVD disc with not a single issue.
To conserve my main hard drive space I kept my iDVD templates on one of my other hard drives. Recently I was spring cleaning and inadvertently relocated the iDVD template library. Upon recently launching I realised this and reinstalled the templates.
So when I go to work I have every detail set up as usual and instruct iDVD to burn a disk image of the file so it's ready to burn to disk upon my return home from work. I have no idea why iDVD is now burning NDIF images. I have used Disk Utility to burn the image to a DVD and all seems to work fine, despite the seemingly slow verification process. After which "Your Disk has been burned Successfully."
    Question:
Why is it that my Intel Mini is capable of recognizing and playing my newly burned DVD from this strange and suddenly appearing NDIF image, while my PowerMac G4 Dual 867 which I have used to burn and play burned disks for a few years now, not recognize or play a burned DVD disk?

  • Samsung SH-S182M (Lightscribe DVD Burner) - Will it work in a G5 DP 2.0GHz?

I found this drive on sale at Frys this weekend for 49 bucks. All the sales reps just read the box and saw no mention of Mac OS X and said, it won't work even though I told them I regularly use Pioneer ones that say nothing about macs but work fine.
Does anyone know if this drive will work in a G5? Do you need special software to do the "lightscribe" part? CAn you even do that on a mac? Is it even worth getting a lightscribe disc? I like the idea of burning the image on the disk...love the way it looks....

Here is some info that you may find useful:
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
    Select "DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW"
    Select "Samsung"
    and "Search"
There are others using the Samsung Lightscribe drives.

  • Satellite P100-403: DVD burning won't work

    Hi
I have tried working out the DVD problem from the help menu, no luck, tried the Toshiba online help, but not much use as it turns out to be a user forum, where people help one another.
Couldn't even find a box to ask a question. Pass work is metalicg
"P2" - Right click - properties for "format" only works if you enable C.D burning and DLA is ticked.
If you do this it says "by enabling C.D. recording function, you cannot right to DVD RAM
I have tried DVD R & DVD RAME TYPE II Rewriteable, neither will format.
I have some software that states what this machine should be able to do and it and the using DVD discs help menu says I should be able to format and record on them.
Can anyone please advise why I can only write to C.D or how to write to DVD?
    Thanks
    Melvyn

    Hi
If you want to burn a DVD then you should use an 3rd party burning allocation like Nero.
Nero contains the option to format the rewritable medias like CD RW.
    >If you do this it says "by enabling C.D. recording function, you cannot right to DVD RAM
This is right and not a problem or an bug. If the own windows burning function is enabled in the CD/DVD drive properties you will be not able to burn the RAM medias!!!
As I said. Use an 3rd party software to burn files on DVD.

  • Dvd burning no longer works

    Hi
I have been burning dvd's on my shiny new powerbook (a happily converted former pc user) for months, but have now been getting this message:
    Sense Key = Hardware error
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x03
I have found a lot of similiar posts with variations to the sense codes, but most of them seem to relate to a switch to new media or first time burning. I have had no problems using the same software and the same exact media (same spindle!) for the last 40 dvds I burned. It just stopped working. I can still play dvds...
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks,
    Monika
