CD Drive From G4

I retrieved my old G3 from the attic and set it up. I had replaced the combo drive from my G4 with a super drive and thought I would install the combo drive in my G3. I did and everything fits, but the push button on the G3 won't open the tray.
Any ideas how I can get this to work?

If that combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive came from a Quicksilver or MDD G4, the actuator button on the faceplate may be (intentionally) missing. You'd notice it because there's a rectangular hole in the faceplate where the actuator would normally be found. Remove the optical drive bezel from the G3 to verify that the drive has or doesn't have the actuator button. If it doesn't have one and you're running a pre-OS X version on the beige, you can look for "Hot Tray" at VersionTracker. It's a small utility that when run, opens the optical tray. Link the utility to a Function key and you can open the drive's tray with the push of a button.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system.  OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.  There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition.  I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

  • Unable To See Network Drive from outside Home Network..even when using DynDNS

    Hi
I have just got a Freecom Media storage Network Center which I have attached to my WRT150N router.
I am attemting to permit access to authorised users to files on the drive via the internet (presumably via ftp).
Here is what I have done:
Swiitched on DynDNS on the web admin page in the router (used DynDNS.com free service.
Obtained a user addess which is middle-earth.dyndns-home.com from DynDNS, which is linked to my Virgin Media IP
Switched on Port Range forwarding with
    Ports 20-21 as ftp
    Port 80 as http
    Port 57 as DNS
    Selected "both protocols"
Set the IP address to route to 192.168.1.42 - (this is the IP address which the web based software for the Network Drive reports as.
However the configuration of the TCP/IP protocol in PC attached by LAN cable to the router is "Obtain an IP address automatically" (i.e. dynamic?).  If I change these settings and specify static IP addresses   will I not muck up internet connection to Virgin Media.
what I was hoping to acheive was typing     ftp:// middle-earth.dyndns-home.com
in the address bar would let me see the network drive from anywhere!
I have tried using DNS pinging on Ports 20, and 21 but that tells my ports are closed.  i have also tried switching off my software firewall (Kaspersky) and the router firewall, but this does nothing.
What have I done wrong or no done!!
    Thanks

I think the problem is solved.
The Freecom device needs to use a different part of its interface to be assigned a static IP address, which I have now done.  At my last try it was visible from two independent views outside of my network.
On another front, I am appalled at Linksys or Cisco, who are not prepared to advice on getting more from their produicts if they are 'out of warranty'.  The online chat tech said I could ring an 0871 premium line number in the UK.  When I rang that, I was told as tthat as my unit is not faulty and was out of warranty I would have to use their pay per incident  service.
That is not a way to deal with customers.  When it comes to upgrading or replacing network equipment, I will look to a provider who is interested in their customers.

  • How do I access my AE attached lacie drive from the web

I just hooked up a 1TB drive to my new AE and think I have it configured properly in the disk pane of airport utility. I'm very much hoping that I have it configured correctly! I chose to configure "with a disk password", and not " accounts", and just for the heck of it clicked on the "?" [airport utility help] at the bottom of the Disks/File Sharing page. At the bottom of the page in help under "sharing a usb hard disk on your network", under " to set up disk sharing:" #4 "select the " share disks over ethernet WAN port" checkbox if you want to provide remote access to the disk over the wan port", It turns out that I don't have that message on my airport utility pane for Disk/ file sharing. I do have a checkbox that says " share disks over the internet using Bonjour, but I definitely don't have a checkbox that says " ethernet wan port" as a choice.
Why would my pane be missing that choice? I recall setting up the AE choosing to be able to use computers with the pre 802.11n compatability. Should I have chosen the 5ghz which is 802.11n only as I recall.
I hope this all isn't sounding to complicated. I just want to be able to access my hard drive [connected to the AE] remotely from the web and hopefully be able to access a huge music library that i have on that drive. HELP, PLEASE, KIND APPLE PEOPLE!

It is attached to another router.
In order to access a drive from the Internet, you need to know the Public IP address of the router and the router would need to be configured to port map the file service requests from the Internet to the drive. Apple provides Leopard and Snow Leopard users a means to access drives attached to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), from the Internet, by using a feature known as "Back to My Mac." You may want to explore this option further.
Without Back to My Mac, the router would need to be manually configured to make this work. In a much simpler case where the 802.11 AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is directly connected to the Internet modem, you would use the AirPort Utility to determine its Public IP address and to configure it for port mapping. The only difficult issue is the type of Public IP address that your ISP provides you. Most consumer-grade Internet service comes with a dynamic IP address. That means this address will change periodically and you will need to keep track of the changes in order to be successful in accessing it from the Internet. One way to do this is to use a DDNS service, like DynDNS.
In your case, there is an added level of complexity since the AEBSn is downstream of another router. You would have to configure both this router and the AEBSn to get this to work.
Should I try to set up with accounts, would that be different in regards to this problem?
The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) can share out a hard drive with three types of access: 1) Base Station Password, 2) Disk Password, or 3) With Accounts. Which type you choose will not affect the drive from being accessed from the Internet.

  • Cannot access drives from desktop

I recently noticed that neither my internal drive or my external LaCie FireWire drive are accessible from my desktop. Double-clicking on either drive icon will not open a window. Folders on the desktop will open. I can access both drives from within an application "open." I have run maintenance and optimization in Techtool Pro but nothing has changed.
PowerMac G4 Mirror Doors   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   LaCie FireWire Drive

When you click once on the drives and select Get Info from the File menu, are you given the info on the drive contents? It is a long shot, but if those are just aliases to the drives and they aren't mounted, that might explain why they won't open.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

  • Auto Installation of a Print Driver from the Server?

    Hi all,
I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I am fairly new at setting up Mac Servers and was looking for some advice. I am trying to set up a Mac 10.6 Server as a print server. I am familiar with setting up printing services on W2k3 servers, but have some questions about this on a Mac server. On a Windows server, once I have installed the printer with the correct driver and shared it out, users just need to connect to the server's print queue and the correct driver is automatically downloaded from the server and installed on the workstation. On the Mac server, it seems that even after I have set up the print queue and installed the needed driver, when I connect a Mac workstation to the queue, it automatically tries to use the Generic Postscript Driver. I then have to manually download and install the needed driver for the printer. Is there any way to get the Mac workstations to automatically download and install the driver from the server, or do I have to pre-load the needed driver on each Mac that will be using the shared printer?

A Mac Server can distribute Windows print drivers (along with settings) to Windows clients. It does it exactly the same way as Linux Samba servers and (older) Windows servers. This is done by creating a special hidden share point (using SMB), it is special in that it uses the name print$ the drivers and settings are then loaded (from a Windows PC) in to this share, and subsequent PCs can then automatically download them.
See http://www.techrepublic.com/article/techrepublic-tutorial-automate-desktop-print er-setup-with-samba/1053286 for some more information on how to do this.
Note: My past experience has seen the associated .tdb databases for this function stored on this share often get corrupted meaning one had to re-upload (from a Windows PC) the drivers again. Also despite the automatic distribution of drivers and settings being something Windows has done for decades, Apple are still very poor at this in terms of the equivalent Mac (server) to Mac (client). Finally, I have not seen (yet) whether this approach is possible with Windows 7 clients.

  • HT6114 Hello, I just updated from os 10.7.2 to os 10.9.2 and now I can't print to my HP 8600 plus printer.  I've downloaded the new driver from the hp site and still no printing.

    help!

Did you run the installer for the driver from the downloads folder?
Is the printer wifi or wired?
Are you certain the printer has joined the wifi network if its wireless?
If you go to sys prefs and the print and scan page is the printer red or green lit?

  • Can i copy my entire hard drive from one computer to another?

I am buying a used ibook 900gh 640ram 40gb hd using 300mh clamshell now - i would like to copy my entire hard drive from the clamshell to the new ibook OS and all so when i use it everything will look and work exactly like it does on the clamshell - can i do this easily? disc copy when booted from a CD?

Hi, not on Tiger at the moment, so I can't be certain, but...
I may be wrong, but I thought the Networked Mac only came about in Leopard's Migration assistant.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554
Setup Assistant, included with computers that have Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later preinstalled, can transfer data (including account settings and home folders) from a previous Mac (that's using Mac OS X 10.1 or later) to your newer computer. You'll need a FireWire cable to connect the two computers together. The Assistant offers to transfer (or "migrate") data from your older computer when you turn on your new computer for the first time. Make sure the older computer's firmware is up-to-date first.
The only way I see this is going to happen is with a USB/FW external drive, and painfully Clone the Clamshell via USB 1.1 to the external drive, move the drive to the iBook and connect via FW.

  • Can I move hard drives from one Mac Pro to another?

I have two mid-2010 Mac Pros that I work with daily - one 8-core on 10.7.3 and one 12-core on 12.7.4.  I would like to take all of the drives out of one Mac Pro and put them in the other and vice versa, essentially trading their content.  It probably sounds pointless, but I would like to build the more powerful one out from scratch, and right now the less powerful one is nearly empty.
Can I simply shut off both machines and swap all of the drives in one for all of the drives in the other?  I would keep them in the same bays in the machine I'm trading them with, but I'm unsure if I will screw something else up.

I've moved drives from a Mac Pro 1,1 to a 5,1 and they were able to boot the newer Mac, but to ensure that the OS was configured for the newer machine, I ran the appropriate combo updater once the drive was installed. If you're planning to stick with the drive rotation, doing that shouldn't hurt and might help even though the machines are of the same vintage. Note, however, that some commercial software keys in on machine specifics and/or the serial number to prevent piracy, so swapping drives can cause other problems.

  • How can I install audio driver from BootCamp into Windows 7?

After an uneventful installation of Window 7 (64) onto iMac  cor 2duo OS X 10.6.7.
    NO SOUND.
I have tried to replace the Audio Driver HD through Device Manager: it is not working
      a) if I disable the Windows Driver and try to install the Cirrus driver from the BootCamp disc, I am informed that "device already has the optimal driver"
      b) if I unistall the WIndows driver, Sound Video Game Controller disappears from Device Manager-so there is no place through which I can install a new driver.
    c) If I start from the BootCamp/Driver folder and select Cirrus and Install, I am again getting the answer that the "device already has the optimal driver"
I am frustrated! Please, can you advise how to proceed?

You do NOT want to disable unless you are not going to use a device.
You want to rollback or uninstall and get Cirrus driver.
Try Boot Camp (Setup) repair-reinstall - to enable the device.

There are take-apart guides online.  For example
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html
However, you can also consider securely erasing the hard drive instead.  You can do this using a Mac OS X installation disc with a version that your iMac G4 can boot from the optical drive.  If this is a viable option, please post back (include Mac OS X version on installation disc).

*Please let me know if you need additional information from me.

Restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you see the drive, click on it and then select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
If you don’t, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, press C if needed, and either repair the drive or install an OS onto it.
