Cd drive grinding sound

my macbook pro cd drive never had a problem unitl today when i put didk in it started making a grinding spining sound. any ideas?

Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Windows 7
Check if the drive will now read CDs.
If it still doesn't, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now able to read  CDs.

  • Dv7-3079wm BD/DVD/CD drive grinding sound won't read CD-R data discs help!

Hello, I have a dv7-3079wm, Windows 7 64bit notebook.  The optical drive inside is a hp BDDVDRW CT10L ATA Device YC09. Driver details: Provider Microsoft. Driver version 6.1.7600.16385. Driver Date 6/21/2006.  I have run searches for any new firmware and/or drivers and nothing comes up no matter where I attempt to see if new ones are available.  Here is problem I am experiencing:   When I insert a CD-R data disc or CD-RW data disc into optical drive it doesn't just make that happy spinning sound and open up the disc.  It makes a grinding noise, seems like it is trying to figure out what to do.  After much awful noise, it eventually just pops open and dialog box reads Please insert a disc.  This happens with CD-R/RW that are data (files, photos, pdf, docs, etc) that were burned on other computers (one person uses Nero for his burn software if that helps).  I have tried changing the AutoPlay settings to each of the choices available, including do nothing option.
This DOES NOT HAPPEN when I insert a DVD (I have autoplay to use Windows Media Player to view DVDs) and they open, play and no problems.  What can I do to make this work again?  It worked initially when I purchased the notebook, but suddenly started doing this.  The noise is scary, but doesn't seem to make the thing not work at all...just can't seem to identify the CD-R/RW disc at all and eventually just ejects the tray.  Please help me find out what I can do to fix this.  I thought maybe it is just autoplay settings but that doesn't seem to help.  Please help me.  I am not trying to BURN discs.  I am trying to put CD-R/RW data discs into the bloody thing so I can open and view them.  Please help.  Thank everyone who answers in advance for helping.

  • HT1338 HOW CAN I SPEED UP MY MAC IT HAS A GRINDING SOUND AND THE COLOUR WHEEL SPIN AND FREEZES

MY IMAC HAS A GRINDING SOUND AND ITS SLOW, THE WHEEL START SPIINING AND IT FREEZES I HAVE TO TURN IT OFF AND ON AGAIN , WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I SPEED IT UP AND GET IT TO RUN FASTER?

Does the sound appear to be from the hard drive, such as when you do any work (which means the hard drive is being written to)?
Have you received an email from Apple about their Seagate hard drive recall (for certain iMac models)? Check to see if yours is affected here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
In any case, a grinding noise is what I had, followed by other very strange behavior and the diagnosis was hard drive failure. So, whether you are covered or not, I would strongly suggest that you backup all your data as quickly as you can and - if you're not covered by warranty or the recall - book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a diagnosis.
Also, please do not use all caps - difficult to read and it's considering shouting on the internet.

  • What is grinding sound on my iMAC

I had my hard drive replaced and upgraded my desktop to snow leopard.  Since then the computer has a grinding sound coming from it.  The spinning ball of death appears frequently dispite taking actions to clear cache, etc.  Am I doomed to need to replace more of the 4 yr. old computer?

Sounds like your new hard drive is dying. This does happen. Call the vendor from where you got it and ask for a replacement.

  • What is that loud, grinding sound?

Had my computer, MacBook, on all day.  Connected to power all day too.  Later, about early evening, the house was a little warmer and I tried to put MacBook to sleep when a very loud, almost grinding sound was coming from the laptop.  It almost seemed like the sound was coming from the battery compartment but not sure.  It was not a drive sound, nor fan sound, or CD drive sound, nothing like that- much louder and nasty sounding.  So has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know what this could be?  All help appreciated and welcomed.  Thanks

This could be the internal Hard Drive being a bit loud when it starts up or it could indicate a potential hard drive error.
If you check the S.M.A.R.T status of your drive in Disk Utility it should give some indication (but not always).
If the system works fine it's probably nothing to worry about, but you should probably speak to Apple Tech Support or make an appointment with an Apple Genius at your local Apple Retail Store just to be on the safe side.
If you have an external drive available to you, make a back up of your system (so you don't loose anything) in case the drive does need replaced.

  • 27 Inch iMac 2.8GHz i5 (Mid-2010) Grinding Sound.

Hi, I got my iMac as a replacement last year and it's just started making an intermittent grinding sound. It's never when doing anything specific. I tried to make it make the sound by rendering a video, doing a disk speedtest and nothing happened which has just confused me. I'm usually pretty good with computers, building PCs and repairing them but I have no idea what is going on with my iMac.
Stupidly and because of money problems I couldn't get Applecare so it's 8 months out of warranty.
Has anybody had any issues like this with their iMac, if so what was it that was wrong? I've not had the best of luck with Macs and it's getting annoying that they always break on me. Thanks in advanced!
    Benjamin

Thanks, I have regular Time Machines backups so I'm not too concerned about that. It doesn't get louder under load and I've used SMCFanControl to put the 3 fans up 1 at a time and the noise didn't increase or start which leads me to believe it possibly is the Hard Drive. I can't get into AHT for some reason, It worked before updating to Mountain Lion and now I can't even get on to it using the Snow Leopard disk.
I think I could try taking out the Hard Drive and run the drive in an enclosure just to see if the sound will start in one. If it does, I guess that's the easiest thing to replace and might be a good idea to go to an SSD at the same time.
I'll try to explain the sound in more detail. At random times a noise would start and within 2 or 3 seconds it gets to about the volume of the fans at max, when at the peak volume the sound is like an angle grinder grinding metal then it just fades to nothing and the iMac sounds just like normal except for a slight whine from one of my fans that is inaudible unless I put my ear to the machine.
I hope that was enough detail, it's somewhat hard to describe.
    Thanks again!

    Hello,
I am trying to use my Sound Blaster LX with the new Adobe Audition 2.0 with no luck.
With the new version 2.0, Audition came with this ASIO solution that should make things easier.
Somehow for me it does not work.
Please advise, what should I do that Audition will work with my sound card?
    Thanks,
    Shlomo
Perhaps Asio4All or USB-ASIO (LX not said to be supported) driver is needed to be installed to get a sort of ASIO support for that USB device.

  • Nokia lumia 1520 loud speaker grinding sound and w...

    hi,
my nokia lumia 1520 has been making sound grinding sounds which can only be heard if you put your ear close to the loud speaker. i emailed the company that i bought the phone from and this is what they said:
"for this type of issue, you can do a Master Reset on your phone (please take note that by doing this all of your data will be erased). If the problem persists, kindly go to your nearest Nokia service center to have it checked. If it's still under warranty, any repairs will be free of charge. If it's NOT under warranty, please get the code from the service center and forward it to us through [email protected] so we can review the charges (subject for approval) and give you a refund for it."
i did as they said but when i went to the nokia care centre, since i live in uk and the phone is from dubai they said that its out of warranty so i asked them for a code as the company said to me but nokia care team had no idea what i was talking about. i showed them the email and nothing
so i was wondering if anyone can help me out
    id really appreciate it
    thanks

    Hi thedeepsleeper,
Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!
Are you still having an issue with your Lumia 1520? If yes, did something happen to your phone prior to the issue? What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far? Does it happen only when you put it on a loudspeaker? How about when connecting your earphone to your phone?
If you would like to send it for repair and since there's no international warranty, we suggest sending it to a Nokia Care Point in Dubai instead. To know more about the difference between the warranty in the UK and in Dubai, see these links:

  • Metallic Grinding Sound on Burned CD Playback

When I burn a playlist to a CD, and then playback the CD...some of the songs contain a short loud metallic grinding sound right in the middle of the song. Anyone know a reason why this might be happening?
    Thanks

Many possible causes, but the first thing to try is go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Burning, and set the "Preferred Speed" to a much lower value, and then burn again.

  • DV8T Fan grinding sound when opening lid or returning from sleep mode

I don't know if this is a normal thing, but not always, Id say 50% of the time when the computer wakes or I open the lid there is a breif grinding sound coming from the top left area of the body of the notebook. I am pretty sure it is the fan and im wondering if this is going to eventually lead to a ballance issure with the fan causing it to fail and ultimatly kill the CPU.

I'm having a similar problem that I may have cracked. My screen is on but the backlight is off (so the image is practically 100% on resume from hibernate. Have you reset the pram and cleared the smc?

  • Hard drive clicking sound when MBP in motion

    Hi all,
I just bought the new 15" 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro with the SD card slot, and I noticed that every time I move the machine vertically (i.e. upwards or downwards), I hear a hard drive clicking sound. Sounds like a single chirp... if anybody knows what I'm talking about. What's wrong with this, or is this natural?
    Thanks.

I think I have found our problem. We are not alone on this one. It actually concerns me after reading about this. Here is the link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1935
I found this under a different thread in this forum. Other users are hearing this when they "bump" the right side of the laptop or when they suddenly move the laptop.

  • Audigy 2 ZS, Driver update results in broken driver, no sound.

    > I recently bought a used Audigy 2 ZS which works fine with the drivers from the CD. I don't know how old they are, Creative System Informations says driver version .82.0. That's why i wanted to update them. I had a Li've! before, so i knew how to update the drivers with the auto updater on the creative site. By the way, i did a clean up of the old drivers with Driver Sweeper before installing the new sound card.
When i do a driver update with the auto updater on the Creative website it downloads and install the newer drivers, but after the mandatory reboot i have no sound, and every Tool crashes, throws an error message or just doesn't work. I lose all my EAX effects and can't select any speakers. The only way to solve that is to uninstall everything and do a clean start with the CD.
I can update everything via the auto updater, except the drivers.
Using Audigy 2 ZS and Windows XP SP3
    AMD Athlon XP 3200+
    2 GB DDR-400 RAM
    Geforce 6800GT 256MB

With XP I'm still using 2.8.000, they seem to work fine
