CD Drive Jamming

A friend of mine has a Lime Rev/D iMac that has a CD drive that is jamming. It isn't refusing to open or close the drive, but the actual tray is opening into the front of the computer (as in when the try opens, it is bashing into the plastic around the hole where it's actually supposed to be). Any ideas as to why it might be doing this? Any solutions?

The CD, Hard Drive and Motherboard are all attached together and come out of the computer as one assembly. Care must be taken when sliding this assembly back into the CRT shell, or the edge of the CD tray will jam against the plastic around the hole as you described. These instructions for installing memory will show you how to remove and reinstall the assembly;

  • DVD drive jammed no applecare yet

A disc is jammed in my MBP. I tried applying pressure to the drive, holding upside down and other solutions but nothing is working.
I have not bought AppleCare but I am still eligible.
Is this problem something the Genius Bar can fix or should I buy AppleCare?
My concern is that it is actually "after the fact". Meaning it has broken before I bought Applecare.

Well, if you're still eligible for AppleCare, then you are still under the original warranty, I would assume. So, you can take it to a Genius and have it looked at.
I have sometimes experienced the same thing and these have worked at various times for me (you may have already tried these, so I apologize if I'm telling you what you already know).
    1. Restart the computer while holding down the mouse button.
    2. Restart, and after the startup tone, press and hold the X key until the computer finishes the startup routine. Then Open iTunes and hit eject.
    3. Restart the computer, and after the startup tone, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F key combination. You will end up at a system prompt---type the following: eject cd
and then hit Return. Then type: mac-boot
    and press Return.
    4. restart the computer and do nothing--just wait---after about ten minutes, the computer will spit the disc out.
I hope one of these things works for you.

  • CD Drive Jammed

I am not 100% positive but it's quite possible my 3 year old implanted something into my CD/DVD drive.  Is there an easy way to open up my MacBook Pro to see if anything is jammed in there? Right now, I cannot insert a CD/DVD to play or burn.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help/

The optical drive is sealed, opening the machine (carefully) will not allow you to see inside the drive. Take it to an Apple Store.

  • CD/DVD Drive jammed

Have a 17" Powerbook G4. Put in a new CD in the slot loading CD/DVD drive & it spit it out several times. After this, I couldn't put one in..... there seems to be a "latch" on the right side that won't allow the CD to go in. I've tried zapping PRAM & resetting PMU.... I have burned maybe 50 CD's, no DVD's & never watch/play disks on it. Can I fix it myself; can it be replaced? (with what?) No AppleCare

Well, did you insert a normal sized disk? If not, we know why it's screwed up.
I recommend disassembling your PowerBook and seeing what's wrong. It shouldn't be too hard. If you don't feel like getting into that kind of stuff, just go to your local non-apple-computer independent Apple store (if there is one) and see how much they'll charge for repair. Another option is to just buy AppleCare.

  • DVD Drive jammed/blocked

After quite a few months of not using the CD/DVD slot, I inserted a disk that I had read previously. It went all the way in and stayed there a few moments.  Then the drive  spat it out, but now something is blocking the drive and I cannot insert any disk at all.  It goes in about half way before running into something that stops it.
Any suggestions as to how to free up whatever has "closed" the drive?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, nothing happened, but thank you for the suggestion.
Looks like I am off to the repair shop (or in the market for an external disk drive).

  • DVD Drive Jammed

Trying to insert a disk into the DVD drive of my iMac but disk only can go in about 5/6th of the way in. I have confirmed there is not another disk already in.
Suggestions to disengage drive to allow a disk in?

I assume your disc drive is a slot loader & not a tray loader.
Are you sure someone hasn't inserted something?
What happens when you depress the F12 key? Do you hear any noises like it's trying to eject?
Shutdown (or restart) while depressing the mouse button. This instructs the disc drive to eject.
If neither of thes things work, your drive may have failed.

  • Super drive jammed. It does not accept CD, How can I reset it?

I have tried to put a CD in it but it does not seem like operating at all. Is there way that I can reset the Super drive?
    Thanks

Try resetting the > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the compute
then the PRAM and NVRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Then if it is still not working, you need to make an appointment at either your Local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and have it fixed. > Apple - Find Locations

  • Combo Drive jammed

The combo drive isn't working so great. The slot is not blocked but one side of it doesn't really load the discs when I try and insert any disc. How do I open up the case of the powerbook and open the combo drive to see if something is blocking it?

ok, so i'm actually thinking that it probably just needs replaced. Can I upgrade to a superdrive? How do I do it and what kind should I get?

That's crazy. A serial number is not required.

  • Watching videos in the car off USB stick ~ Need direction

We have the new iPad 32GB without phone, version 6.1.3.  I have a Lightning to USB camera adapter and a few USB sticks lying around....  I have a significant Movie collection on an HTPC on our home network and would like to move some of these for the kids for a trip we'll be taking soon..
I attempted to load an MKV file onto a 2GB USB stick, stored in a DCIM folder and renamed the movie to DCS_0001 and then also tried PICT_0001.  In each case I then connected the USB stick to the cable and then the cable to the ipad.  The photo app loads but then tells me that there are no photos to import.
    Am i doing this right?
    Any help or suggestions?
    TIA.
    Regards,

It can be done, but not easily. I've had the best luck with using SD cards. Most USB sticks trigger the 'too much power' warning. Your videos do have to be the precise format, MP4 and you can't view them off the card, you have to import them onto your device, open via the photos app which will then open the video app and play the video. Also, maybe mine were made wrong, but since there are no names on the files, I had nothing but black thumbnails so had to guess import.
So it can work, but it's a lot of hoops to jump through. If you're going to be using it as a kid distraction tool, then I'd go for easy, which would be the drive James suggested. If you need to convert formats, Handbrake is a good conversion tool. mpegstreamclip also works well, as does format factory (that one is PC only)

  • 2 CD's stuck!

    Hi everyone,
A friend of mine was using a CD rom on her P.Book 15" when the drive suddenly made some kind of unfriendly noise and quit the programme, reverting to the desktop with no cd icon appearing on it. Someone else came in and seeing that there was no cd on the desktop thought it was empty so tried another cd. Yep, you heard me right, this person put a second cd in it! Don't ask me how she got it in, I shudder to think.
Anyway my question is, as it's not under guarantee, is it possible for me to open it up and take out the cd's or is it a sealed compartment inside the computer case? I have tried shutting down and restarting while holding down the trackpad button but to no avail.
I imagine that to take it to a repair shop would cost a lot and she is a single mum.
    Would appreciate any advice,
    thanks,
    Mark.
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1 GB RAM

    Hi Mark --
Bummer about your friend's optical drive jam.
You can find a step-by-step guide on how to install an optical (cd/dvd)drive here: http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/54.7.0.html
Problem is, as your post anticipated, the drive is a sealed, enclosed compartment. I'm not sure what do to try to get two jammed discs out of the drive; I suppose it's possible that replacing the drive might be your only option short of opening the PowerBook and then opening the optical drive as well, and I just don't know whether that latter step is even feasible.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but you might want to at least ask around at local Apple repair shops to get some estimates as to what such a repair might cost, before evaluating how much it would cost to replace the drive instead. You can find replacement drive prices (for comparison's sake) here, among others: http://www.pbfixit.com/cart/catalog/category15_Optical_Drives_page1.html
    Good luck.

  • My CD/DVD Drive Only Works When I Jam the CD/DVD in hard..?

My CD/DVD drive only works when I stuff the CD/DVD in the drive EXTRA hard. If I just try to put in with normal force (that at one time worked) it spins the disc around, makes a spinning noise, and then ejects it. I'm taking it to the Apple Store soon. What should I expect to be wrong and is it fixable? Please share details. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like the spring that loads the drive has gotten jammed by something. This can often happen if you use CDs with sticky labels, or do anything to label the discs directly. As a result of issues like these, I've not labeled any discs directly, and instead store the in jewelcases, and purchase them prepackaged in jewelcases to avoid such issues.

  • Loading Jam Packs on Macbook Air without CD drive

Since my Macbook Air (with Lion) doesn't have a cd drive, I recreated the Jam Pack directories in my Macbook Air exactly as they appear on my iMac (with Lion), and copied and pasted the Jam Pack folders/files from my iMac to my MacBook Air using an external hard drive to do the transfer.  Here is where I put the Jam Pack folders/files on my MacBook Air:
Jam Pack - 4 Symphony Orchestra and Jam Pack World Music:
Library>Audio>Apple Loops>Apple> (for the Jam Pack sounds)
Library>Audio>>Apple Loops Index> (for the Index files)
    Jam Packs 2 and 3:
Library>Application Support>Garage Band>Apple Loops (for the Jam Pack sounds)
Library>Application Support>Garage Band>Apple Loops Index (for the Index files)
However, when I fire up Garage Band, it still doesn't see the Jam Packs.  Can anyone tell me why, and what I might do about it?
    Thanks,
    tkaba

You also do need the Instruments Library; otherwise the instruments to play the loops will be missing:
The Instruments Library is located in
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/
Ssee what else from  /Library/Application Support/GarageBand you may need, also from the corresponding files in your user library.
To reindex your loops properly, reveal the Library>Application Support>Garage Band>Apple Loops files in the Finder, launch GarageBand,  and drag the loops  into your GarageBand Window, directly onto the Lopp Browser. Do that for all Loop Folders in your User Library.

  • Moving Audio and Jam Pack Content to second hard drive

I recently installed Logic Studio and all the content onto my startup hard drive (250 GB). I have a second internal hard drive (80 GB) that is wiped clean.
Can I safely move all the Audio and Jam Pack Content (contained originally on the 6 DVDs) from the startup hard drive to the second hard drive? Or do I have to go through the whole installation process again? If so, where is all the content located on my startup drive?
Thanks for help and advice on this newbie question.

Thanks. I found this which was helpful

I decided to move them to the external hard drive and not use an alias. I haven't even opened Logic yet so the Logic library should be ok.

  • Install jam pack on external drive

    Hi all
I'm a Logic 8 user, and need to install the jam packs onto an external drive, as my powerbook hard drive is almost full.
I haven't been able to figure out a way to do it, because, when I put the jam pack contents disk in my drive to install, a dialog box tells me to install the jam packs from the Logic install disk.
In spite of the fact that the read me file says that I can "freely install" the larger audio files anywhere, the Logic Install disk won't let me do this. It does not give the the option to change disks, even though I have deselected all the install options, except for Jam Pack. It actually seems that the steps you need to take to run the installer are backwards. You have to choose the disk on which to install Logic, and then choose what elements of Logic to install, so I can never choose the external hard drive!
Does anyone know why this might be. or can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Angus Armstrong

Seriously? They really make you install everything on the internal and then move it over? Why would this be the case? Doesn't that get a little messy with re-indexing everything. I installed the basic install disc info a while ago, and have been holding off on the jam packs until I get the external, just to avoid a little wear and tear on my internal drive. I guess I might as well install them now? And move them over later?
