Cd drive making a strange noise

recently I have noticed that my cd drive on my powerbook has been making a very loud annoying noise when it speeds up to mount or finalize a disc
is it on "death row"????? should I replace it??????

Hi, t. If the drive is still performing all its functions satisfactorily, then you obviously don't have to replace it. But if the noise is unacceptably annoying, replacement is certainly an option.
Any optical drive makes a lot more noise when an unbalanced disc is spinning in it. An unlabeled blank disc certainly shouldn't be unbalanced, but some poorly-made ones can be, and any disc that has a user-applied label is likely to be unbalanced. Running a drive with unbalanced discs puts a lot of extra wear on the spindle bearing. Once that bearing is worn, the drive will be noisy even when it's spinning a perfectly balanced disc.
There's no room at all inside a Powerbook for any sound-damping material, and the metal case certainly does nothing to damp noise. So when anything in a Tibook gets noisy, whether it's the fans, hard drive or optical drive, it can be very annoying. It's up to you to decide how much noise you can stand before replacing your drive.

  • IMac hard drive making a chirping noise!!

IMac hard drive making a chirping noise!! Its a quiet chirp that goes along with the hum of the hard drive. It doesn't always do it but I'm worried anyways. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a problem?

They told me it's likely the CPU Fan - a known issue - and said that resetting the SMU was the first step towards fixing it. I performed that reset, but the crickets in my machine are still alive and chirping. Step #2, as it was told, is to take the machine back to the Apple service center to be repaired. BUT - looking through other threads here on the same issue, it looks like the issue is currently handled by replacing the CPU fan with another identical model and that because the underlying engineering issue has not been fixed, the crickets will return.
So if this problem is not harmful to the computer, I may be ignoring it for the time being.
Regarding the recalls though, where did you find the serial number range for the recall? I should check mine against that list.

  • Logitech z4 Speakers making a strange noise.....

I have a Mac Pro and I am using Logitech z4 Speakers.
Recently i have noticed a strange noise that comes from my speakers. It doesn't happen all the time but when it starts it keeps doing it every minute or so. It sounds strange as if someone is talking but it is muffled...? Almost like a robot gone wrong!!!
I have unplugged the speakers and listened from the Mac Speakers and that seems to stop it. Then after I plug the speakers back in it starts again after a little while.
This is really confusing and I can't seem to find any answers on any forums.
If someone could help that would be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

You might be able to find some answers off of this link. I can only think of some kind of electrical distortion or a defect in the Macs sound card. Apparently Apples is not too hot and people have have had a few strange quirks with it. Good luck.

Perhaps the reason you haven't had any replies is because there is no such thing as an 8GB iPod Classic.
I suggest that you begin by correctly identifying which iPod you have.

  • My Macbook pro is making a strange noise... I think it is the drive? How do I fix it?

The noise sounds as if I am burning a disc, or something is loading... but there is nothing in the disc drive, and I am not downloading anything.

Try using a drive cleaner.  They can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs if you do not already have one.

  • Why is my mac making a strange noise?

A couple of hours ago my mac started making a really weird noise.. it kind of sounds like a lawn mower.. It fades away every so often and then comes back...
I think it might be the fan.. but my mac isn't hot underneath... please help!!

The only noise maker on a rertina MBP is the fan.  Since you do not have a pentalobe driver that allows you to take the bottom plate off, bring the MBP into an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Optical Drive making a beeping noise

This is really starting to drive me crazy. My macbook pro will every hour or so make a quick beeping and clicking noise near the optical drive. I dont have any apps open that would be trying to check to see if there is a disc and there are no discs in the drive when this happens. I can burn dvd/cd just fine its just that noise that is really starting to bother me I have had this since I got the computer from day one? Anyone else experience this?? Thanks!!

I have the same beeping noise but I can't tell where it is coming from exactly. Doesn't seem like it is the speakers though. It does seem to be front right corner somewhere near the optical drive. Mine is not very often so it is hard to trouble shoot.
My DVD drive also goes through a very noisy start up cycle, three times, each time I wake up the computer. A brand new (one week) 15.4" 2.53 GHz MBP. Does yours do this as well?

  • Mac air is making constant, strange noises!

hello.  i have macbook air 13". late 2010 model.  today, literally from out of nowhere, it keeps putting off sounds as if somebody's "scratching" a rap tune...if that makes sense?  i have no idea what is going on.  can someone help?
    thanks so much!

    thank you, jason!
i hadn't even considered that info you gave me about the forum here.  it probably should have been obvious but it never occurred to me.  so thanks for breaking it down.
as for the noise.  yes, it is coming from the speakers.  i have not plugged a headset in so i can't answer that question. i will keep a set nearby and plug it in if/when i hear it again.
the first time i heard it, i was checking email, reading some news articles etc.  nothing unusual.
i will say, and this may or may not have a thing to do with it but you would likely know more than i would, i had been shooting some photos onto a memory stick earlier.  when i removed the stick from my camera and put it in my mac, i noticed the memory stick was a psp memory stick and not my customary one.  the photos were on it so i went ahead and downloaded them.  is it possible there was some sort of sound scheme on it that i downloaded without realizing it?
at the moment, i am not hearing the sound but i have just logged on after several hours.  i did not hear it earlier today either, after a night offline.  last night, after i ran the repair disk, i did stay online for a while and never heard it again.
again, i appreciate your input very much and will keep the headphones nearby so i can plug them in if need be and respond to those questions.  if you have any other thoughts.......please do share.  as you correctly surmised, i am a complete newbie....not only to this forum but to the world of mac in general!

  • Cd drive making a funny noise

    CD/DVD drive wont work

In all honesty, it seems odd that your trackpad was working fine and you were not experiencing hard drive issues until after you submitted it for repairs. Was this directly with Apple or an Apple Authorized Repair Center? I guess it's possible that they ran a hardware test and realized the drive "may" be failing, but I would expect that they would give you the option to replace it vs. indicating it had failed. It sort of sounds like they had issues when they opened it up to replace the optical drive. You can purchase an extended warranty at your own option. The purpose of the extended warranty is exactly as its name implies... to extend your warranty. Apple gives you a year in which to do so. You have experienced problems while in your initial warranty, so fortunately those repairs were covered. If you were to want an additional two years of coverage, you would need to purchase the extended warranty just like anyone else. I'm just a little skeptical with respect to the other two issues arising after you brought it in for repair... I'd be more so if it were an authorized service center vs. directly with Apple. I would either definitely want to be confident that they did a good job... or go for an extended warranty.

  • When I plugged in usb Logitech head set, my computer sound system went wacky, making a strange noise

I am a techno dummy. When I plugged in my logitech headset it didnt seem to work, so i went to the control panel and played around with making it the default recorder. When i unplugged my head set the computer's sound system went wacky making a loud errie sound, until i plugged the headset back in. What did i do wrong? How should i set defaults for recording, playback, and communication ? HELP!

  • Macbook freezing, running slowly, and making strange noises

Hi. Just today my wife's MB froze while doing nothing more than playing music in iTunes. She had to leave so just closed the lid. When I opened the lid later, it came back from sleep eventually (playing the music), but was making an odd clicking noise. It sounded like it was coming from the upper right side under the keyboard. It didn't sound like the noises the optical drive usually makes, and there was no disc in it.
I left it charging, and when she came back to use it later, found that it was running really slow, taking forever to open applications (prolonged spinning pizza of death), and still making that strange noise. She restarted it twice, and the same thing occured after a reboot?
Any thoughts/suggestions? We have applecare, so we'll likely be giving them a call if it doesn't go away, but I like to check here first.

The same thing happened to my notebook last night, and I did some research. Apparently one of the reader arms in the harddrive separates from the drive and swings loose, digging gouges in the magnetic disk.
If it still boots, make sure you get all your un-backed-up information off of it before it crashes.
Mine is dead, and the only thing Apple can do is replace the drive.

  • CD/DVD Drive making awful noise

    Hi All,
my Macbook Pro has all of a sudden started making a strange noise when I try and burn stuff onto disk. I insert the disk and it starts to almost 'rev up' uncontrollably, its almost like its working overtime but I have only just started having this problem.
It gets to a point where the noise and spinning inside makes me think the Mac is going to blow up, its that bad. The only way to sort it is to shut down the mac forcefully.
Does anyone else have this problem, and if so do you have any suggestions what it could be?
P.S it only does it when burning disks...
    Thanks all

    thank you,
I may need some more technical support by the looks of it.

  • Geforce 5900 makes strange noises!

I've just bought MSI GeForce 5900 and installed it in my computer (MSI KT3 Ultra2 main board).
The graphic card seems to be working okay, when it comes to performance and stuff like that, but the card is making some strange noises. The problem occurs when I'm scrolling the window of Internet Explorer by using my mouse or keyboard up/down buttons. Then I hear these (hard to describe) "scratchy" sounds coming from my card   !
What can be the cause of this?
I've searched the internet for some answers, and I actually found couple of people having the same/similar problem with their 5900 / 5900 Ultra cards (different manifacturers), and they don't have any clue how to solve this.
Did anyone here experience the similar problem, and most important - do you know the cure?
This is just great. I wasn't satisfied with Radeon 9600XT because of its crappy drivers, and now that I returned it and got myself this nVidia card, I got these problems instead. I sure hope I'll not be forced to return this one as well. Please help, or I'm gonna get crazy soon.
    Thanks in advance!

Well, I've found several people with the same problem, so I don't think something is "wrong" with my card in particular. I've partially managed to disable these sounds (disabling "Smooth scrolling" in IE), which, by the way, are not THAT annoying, and I'm gonna do some couple more tricks until I finally decide whether I'm going to keep the card or not.
If I decide to NOT to keep it, I'll probably swap it for a FX 5700 Ultra.
I'm sorry, but the FX 5600 (ultra?) that you are suggesting, simply has no horse power enough to handle the tasks that I'm exlusively need a graphic card for - GAMING.
