Cd drive malfunction

Hi, my iBook G4 is troubling me. A few weeks ago the internal hard drive "crashed" but rebooting still has been possible by means of booting with command-c and the Tiger install disk inserted to fix the problem at each startup with disk first aid. Yesterday command-c booting wasn't possible any more because of a kernel panic, so I decided to replace the internal hard drive that to my understanding caused the kernel-panic. After reassembling I tried to start my iBook with command-c to format the new drive a to do a fresh tiger install, but the install dvd wasn't recognized. The internal dvd drive spins up for a short moment but that's it. Booting into fire-wire mode didn't work nor does command-s or command-v booting. So I decided to try a open firmware boot and boot the system from an external fire-wire-drive. Work's out fine, so the keyboard is ok as is my iBook in general. But a system check showed the the internal dvd drive wasn't at all recognized?! I reopened my iBook but the dvd-drive connector seems properly connected. Who can help?
Yours,
Frank

addendum: I recently disconnetcted the internal dvd-drive and was able to boot into fire-wire mode and to install tiger from another Mac on my iBook. I also disconnected the (fresh) internal hard drive to see if its a master-slave-conflict, but the internal dvd-drive wasn't detected either.

  • Mac Mini - DVD Drive malfunction?

    Hello,
For the last 2 weeks, my MacMini's DVD drive doesn't work normally :
    - trying to burn an audio CD doesn't work if I don't reduce the burning speed thru iTunes parameters
    - a CD bought on the Apple store with a full licence software when inserted in the DVD drive is "seen" as a blank CD
    - same thing for a CD created by a friend
This behaviour isn't taking place every time. If I insert a DVD with a movie for example, it perfectly works and the DVD Reader software starts normally.
What can I do? Where can I find information on the way of replacing myself the DVD drive of my computer?
    Thanks for any help

EBUTZ, welcome to the Mac Mini Forum!
Interestingly enough, another poster from France described her experiences in replacing her DVD drive about 6 months ago in these forums.
Personally, I'd recommend buying a tray-loading, firewire external drive. It will be faster, and less fussy about media than the Mini's Superdrive. And probably cheaper and definitely easier than installing an internal drive.

  • Hard drive malfunction...  but not on my macbook

Apologies this isn't on the right forum but, as I'm sure you'll understand, I have nowhere else to go and the Apple forumers are a helpful bunch.
My external harddrive just stopped working. I'm using it as an external to my new macbook. Actually I have two and I decided to experiment with 'daisychaining' them. I.e. I plugged my lacie drive into my western digital in an firewire enclosure, then plugged that into my mac. Now the lacie one works fine but the WD one in the enclosure gives me a blinking light and gets remarkably hot. No sign of movement or anything.
Have I blown something? I connected the WD drive up to the ports on my Lacie (i.e. the IDE, the power etc) but still nothing so it's not the enclosure but the drive itself. What can I do?/?????

So you crack your lacie open and set the WD using that enclosure?
When you put the WD in Lacie, did you check the jumper also on the WD, it should appoint and set to the same setting (might not the same position) as the HD orininally for Lacie (most of the set to master).
Also did you try to connect the WD with the suspected failed enclosure directly to your MacBook to see how it is work?
Because I think you should try that first before spending the amount of money for new drive and only use pcb board. And beware some of the strip cable is soldered or very easily to tore out.
    Good Luck

  • Drive malfunction and casing problem

I got a 15" Macbook pro about a month ago. I reinstalled Mac OSX because I usually do so with new computers. I didn't really notice anything and put the computer away for about 2-3 weeks since I wanted to give it to my girlfriend as a Christmas present. I know I stored it safely and in a secure case. A few days ago, when we opened it again, I was installing Office 2004 pro and the drive started acting up. It would stall and not finish the installation, and the OS would crash (yes, I got the spinning rainbow disc thath would not go away) I tried reinstalling several times always with the same problem. Movie DVD's seem to work fine though. However, I did notice that my casing was bent precisely on the optical drive side. It is very noticeable and it really bugs me. Should I just take it to an apple store and have it looked at? I found some people have had a similar problem with the bending in another forum, so I know I'm not alone. Please help me as I am new to Macs and would not like to have a disappointing first experience.

Yeah, I know about the 14 days but I simply put it away and didn't touch it again until today....kinda dumb, but I didn't notice anything really the first time around, maybe overwhelmed by the good looks. In any case, the 1 year warranty is supposed to cover those problems, right?? I'll take it anyhow and see what I can get them to do.

  • DVD Player Issues- Possible Hardware/Driver malfunction...

    Hi folks:
I've had my eMac for about three years and have been happily running 10.2.8 for the past two.
Just tonight I had a new issue when I tried to play a DVD; I put the disk in the tray, heard the disc spinning in the drive once it had closed, and then... nothing. No DVD Player launch, no Disc appearing on the desktop. In fact, so much nothing that the Eject button on my keyboard failed to cause the drive to open, as did the Eject command in the Finder and in the DVD Player (which I opened manually).
The only thing that got the disc out was to open iTunes, which I had been using to load CDs earlier this afternoon, and to use the Eject command from within the program. This happened with two clean rental DVDs one after the other. I restarted the computer in between, and have tried inserting Audio CDs, with the same effect each time.
Most troubling is that the last few times I have ejected the discs from inside iTunes I have received a window telling me that my Home drive requires me to enter a pass phrase to execute the command.
I am completely lost. Any ideas?
    Gracias,
    Jason

    hi jason--
i would do a couple of things here. first of all i would go to disk utility in utilities, select the macintosh hd, and then click on repair disk permissions. then boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f during startup until you get a screen that says "to continue booting". then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. by the way, if a disk is stuck it can often be ejected by restarting and holding down the mouse or the eject key on the keyboard during the boot. if that fails, do the open firmware boot described above, except type in these commands--
    eject cd (hit return)
    mac-boot (hit return)
let me know if this makes any difference. [ 8 ) ]

I installed Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate, everything worked properly except for the USB 3.0 driver
When inserting a USB device, it does not work until the laptop is restarted.
I removed the driver (and deleted it from the disk) and installed the driver from the lenovo website, but still the same problem
On the USB 2.0 port, everything is working properly

  • Optical Drive Malfunction

I removed the optical drive in my early 2011 Macbook Pro a while ago, and put in a second HDD. It always read the HDD, and the optical drive always worked via USB. Upon putting the optical drive back in, I've found that it does no work properly. Most of the time it doesn't even read discs, and when it does, it is unbearably slow and the spinning is very audible. For example, I just had a CD in and it actually read it. I was copying some files over onto my desktop, and it started out at a decent rpm until it just gradually slowed down and then stopped reading the CD compeltely, and then ejected it. It's like it's not getting enough juice to run properly. I put the optical drive back in exactly as I had taken it out. I don't think it's damaged.

    Hi
As i understood the issue; the Eject button does not work properly but you can ejects the disk inserting the paper clip into the small hole near the eject button.
    Is this correct?
Since there is no special software which controls the eject button, the issue looks like to be hardware related problem and I think the only option to fix this issue is the CD/DVD drive replacement.

  • IOmega Exernal Hard Drive Malfunction

I have a 1TB iomega external hard drive.  It has functioned normally for 3 yrs on a Windows Xp system.  It also worked fine for about 3 months on Windows 7 system.  All of a sudden now I cannot access it.  It still accepts the set password
assigned to it, but then a window pops up that says, "Disk needs to be formatted before use".  I have read other people have been having the same issue with the same drive, but no solution seems to be present.

    Hi,
If you see the same message after clicking on the drive in My Computer, it is possible the card reader is not functioning properly. Try using a different USB port on the PC or a different card reader.
If the message still persists, it is recommended that you try contact professional data recovery center to see if it's possible to recover the files on the drive.
If there is no important data on the drive, click Format disk when the message appears.
NOTE: Formatting will erase everything on your drive leaving it blank.

  • DVD Drive Malfunctions

I'm unable to make restore disks; two attempts at disk 2 failed verification and I had another DVD this evening that couldn't be read. I tried to access online chat twice and despite getting the message that I was connected with a technician I received numerous script errors the first time and nothing at all the second time. Nice to have a machine that can't support the manufacturer's own customer service platform (in addition to being poorly constructed realtive to a much cheaper and older Compaq-branded laptop). Just writing this for additional documentation for return to store [Edit: Discussion of legal issues is a violation of community guidelines]

  • Hard drive malfunction

Yesterday my itunes worked just fine. I went to open it today and it says it detected a problem with my sound equipment. My speakers are working just fine, so I don't see what the problem is. I've gone through and returned everything back to default. Could it just be a bug? Should I redownload? And if so, how do I keep all the music that I have in my itunes library?

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help: iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes has detected an audio configuration problem

    Hi
My wife's iMac is doing the same thing. It will read a burnt CD that my cousin made on her Windows machine but neither a data disc, nor a audio CD.
Down the list a suggestion was to use a CD lens cleaner to remove the disc. My wife tried it but is slow to check on the progress.
Have you tried re-booting using the install CD and holding the C button on the keyboard? That way you could see if it is the hardware or the OS.

  • Creative Zen Micro - Freezes/Clicks - Hard Drive Malfuncti

I know that many of you are having similar problems with your Zen Micros...here's the deal with mine (it is a 6gb, probably doesn't matter).
I bought it a year ago, used it for two months, then it sat in its box in a drawer for probably four months. When I went to use it again, battery was completely de-charged (or so I assumed, because it was not turning on). So I plugged it in, it began to charge, but would not turn on to play and was not recognized by the computer, even after several hours of charging. Additionally, when I held it up to my ear, I could hear a repeated clicking noise, like something was stuck inside. I took it back to Circuit City... obviously, it was too late to return it. They had a technician look at it for an hour, but he said it looked like it was fried.
I continued charging the Zen for probably 2 days straight after that, and finally, it turned on and played like normal. I thought the problem had been that the battery was just far too de-charged and it just needed that extra 24-hours of being plugged in. So it continued working for a few months.
Then I put it away for a month. Again, it sat in its box. I took it out a few days ago...same old problem.
    - when I plug it into the computer, sometimes it turns on and charges with the battery symbol in the upper corner, and sometimes it just goes to the Creative main screen (as if it's going to turn on and play) but just freezes.
    - when it is not correctly charging (just frozen on the main screen), it always continues with the clicking noise.
I read responses on this forum that said to try banging it against the table. I did this and the clicking noise did stop, but it still stays frozen on the main screen.
I am a struggling, broke college student who foolishly spent $200 on this mp3 player...and in the past year, I have only been able to use it for about 5 months. So many people have the same problem with the Zen Micro that it makes me curious as to why Creative seems to not be doing anything to help. They say to send it in and get a new hard dri've - but that will cost $200...and at this point, I would only have to spend about half of that to buy a new Zen Micro altogether! Most of my family and friends use IPods and I have never witnessed such problems.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Yea, I've read the FAQ and troubleshooting. I can get into rescue mode but when I select any option it then freezes along with more clicking. I've spent the last two hours reading about this, I'm quite certain it's hard dri've failure/sticking. My last mp3 player got stolen and I had to wait a week to receive my zen micro in the mail. Now I have to wait another few weeks to have it fixed. I need it at work, so my life sucks without my mp3 player. This is very not cool. Thanks for your reply, btw. Unfortanetly, I don't think there is anything I can do.

  • Satellite A100-049 - CD ROM drive no longer found

My satellite A100-049 no longer sees my CD rom drive, It won't auto play any discs, and when I double click a shortcut to a program that uses a disc it says 'no cd-rom drive found'.
I've tried updating the driver but I already have the most up to date one. It was fine yesterday, before I installed Norton 360- I don't know if that has anything to do with it. My operating system is vista home premium.
I really need help quickly as I'm going to university in under 3 weeks and the cd rom drive is vital to my course.

    Hi Michael
Its very strange that your CD/DVD drive does not work longer after the Norton 360 installation. For me it looks like the Norton 360 has modified some registry keys and therefore the drive malfunctions.
I would recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
Then restart the notebook. After new reboot the windows OS should recognize the new hardware (CD/DVD drive) and should install it again.
Then start the registry and remove the upper and lower filter values from this registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    then reboot and test again!
Good luck and cheers dude ;)
