CD Drive Might Be Broken

A few weeks ago I noticed that my cd drive wasn't working right. Like you know when you click the volume up button the thing pops up on your screen telling yo your volume when i click the cd drive eject button that doesn't pop up and it doesn't make the eject sound. I didn't really care because I barely ever use CD's but I recently saw snow leopard on sale so I bought it but I'm scared to put in the CD because I don't want it getting jammed or just broken. Any way to know if its broken, fixed, or what.

The CD drive in my Macbook died probably because I dropped the laptop. It worked for a few months before quitting completely. Replacing the internal drive is very expensive so I decided on an external unit but didn't get any help from third party sources such as Staples online sites or even computer repair people as what unit is compatable with my Mac. I called Apple, got a very knowledgable technician who helped perform diagnostics to rule out other causes and then steered me toward a LaCie external drive sold by Apple for $119. I got the unit quickly, plugged it in and it worked right out of the box. I've burned several CDs and it works flawlessly and I think it's faster than the internal one. Plus the unit has LightScribe so it's capable of printing labels directly to a CD. Although for portability it's not as convenient as the internal unit the LaCie isn't all that big or heavy and it fits neatly in the case I use to transport my laptop. Can connect via USB or Firewire which is what I'm using. A great unit and an economical solution if your CD drive fails.

i insert my DVD+RW disk and then went to the disk utilities to erase disk, then it just says preparing to erase disk.. and nothing happens a new untitled disk comes out and tells me to burn it.. when i start burning it it just says error.. i tried it many times with different ways.. and it still won't work..

With Boot Camp, you must install Windows onto in internal HDD (or SSD). If you are referring that your internal Optical drive is broken, you might be able to install Windows from an external drive, but you might not. I have heard varying levels of success with that. I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I do know that if youe machine shipped with an internal optical drive, then you must use that to install Windows using Boot Camp and not swap it out for a "data doubler" and try to install from an external optical drive.

I know the problem is probably not in built-in.o but somewhere else.
Of course I ran `make mrproper` in the mentioned directory before I rebuilt over and over again, enabling and disabling several modules, like Mountainjew did in this topic. I even tried to download the complete source tree again, but to no avail.
Does anyone know if there's currently a problem with one of the kernel modules or with the ZEN sources in general?

Some searching resulted in a post in the Gentoo forums, saying that CONFIG_BRIDGE_IGMP_SNOOPING is the culprit. I noticed that flag wasn't enabled at all, but two posts below it turned out that using Classic RCU can cause troubles. I switched to Tree RCU and my kernel was built successfully (though this still sounds like a bug to me).

Wiki registration might be broken

I'm trying to create an account for the arch wiki, I'm thinking I'm entering the output wrong, except it's copied directly from the terminal, but than I thought my username had to be lowercase so tried that then used my standard 28 character password and the page just refreshes and just removes my password.
When I registered for the forums it was pretty much the same question, to answer that I had to do this.

I see that you edited the post, was it after editing that you got the error message? I believe the flood filter steps in when the same user clicks on "Post" within the 60 seconds and doesn't discriminate between a new post and an edit.

Ipod might be broken

so when i turn on my ipod the apple logo appears and then the warning picture of the ipod comes on. anyone know how to fix this?

Does your iPod make a grinding sound when starting up? This may mean a broken hard drive, in which case you might want to call apple. Same thing happened to mine.

I think my hard drive might be getting ready to crash again.

I'm starting to see some awfully weird stuff right now... after hard reboots due to X lockups (Sauerbraten fucking up), I seem to be losing data from config files that weren't being written to or used at the time of the reboot - .viminfo, for example, and the XML config stuff for Galeon. I also lost everything in my .xinitrc file after a normal, clean reboot. No SMART errors but I am getting rather suspicious. And no rootkits or trojans, AFAICT.
(Had this drive for only 2 years though, it shouldn't be failing now. Then again, it might have crashed before.)

- Electrostatic discharges: drive was pulled from a lightning-fried machine, apparently undamaged (I figured that it would be either okay or dead, given the surge's magnitude), but I'm starting to wonder if something got a little scrambled. If so, though. it took a while to show uo.
ESD damage is cumulative. in silicon terms you can weaken the transistors (silicon junctions) over a period of time just with low voltage discharges. It isnt necessarily so that these will fail totally and immediately. this is like a weld being ok but the metal around it rotting away over time.
re the CPU etc. a year or so back miqorz had similar probs with random crashes, especially with any medium to high CPU process. turned out he changed something on the CPU, cooler , fan or whatever, and the silicon heat transfer paste wasnt applied uniformly. this led to hotspots obviously and a breakdown of process wrt temperature.
back to basics, if you run a HD test (manufacturers testdisk ) itl remove that from the equation. then u can focus on other probables.
recently had trouble accessing a Maxtor 200G. worked ok when i made an image of it, (i work in data recovery/forensics) , but when trying to wipe it as the owner requested, it failed with I/O problems.
Maxtor hard drive test showed drive was failing.
so ... it worked ok to get an image, but screwed up when trying to write to it. Warranty job.
if you want to scrap the drive should it prove faulty, i can point you to some oss utils and procedures should you need to recover data. these have worked on drives that the M/F test confirmed drive failure. if you need to take it out of forum, dont be afraid to priv msg. im happy to make time to help.

DVD drive might be damaged have question

I dropped my ibook g4 recently, and since then, my DVD drive is not working properly. Half the time it does not recognize disks, makes a loud noise, and ejects them. Other times it works. I think the fall might have damaged it. Is it possible to replace it, and how much would it cost? Could I replace it myself?

Turn the machine on it's side and try shaking them out. You can also see if You Tube has any videos on how to do this, they certainly do for folks that have SD cards in theirs. Removing coins should be similar.

The system cannot find my hard drive - is it broken?

I recently updated to OS X 10.4.4 and everything was fine. But today the system froze and I couldn't do anything but press the on/off switch to quit. After that I couldn't boot the system normally. If I start from the System-DVD and open the disk utilities the Hard Drive is not displayed so I cannot check the volume. What can I do?

Hi Berndt, thank you very much for your advice. I think too it's something different and not the HD. After resetting the iBook (vram, pram, pmu etc.) and after a while waiting the system started yesterday without any problem. So I could make a backup. But this morning I had the same phenomenon - frozen Screen (only the cursor worked) and I have to reset everything again. I think I will give it to gravis for an inspection. But I don't want invest too much. A new (bigger) HD would be fine but I don't know what else could be broken and how much the components are. What do you think?
Ronda. I bought my iBook with an OEM Version of diskwarior 2.1.1 which doesn't work with OS-X. I looked at Alsoft but there is no download update available - I have to buy an Upgrade tp Version 3.0 for 39 quid and it takes 3-4 weeks shipment. Do you know an alternative?

Your hard drive might be dying if...

Out of the blue this week, started getting kernel panics: spinning beachball in every open program, dock would freeze, mouse could move but do nothing, restart would only give me grey screen. This was initially after waking from sleep or the screensaver; I have done nothing to the comp recently besides installing an ATI 9800 card a couple months back, been running fine.
Today it's really taken a bad turn. After startup there is a horrible hiccuping noise from my boot drive, kind of like a windshield wiper you know? I can hear something physically clacking back and forth in there, I think it's the little arm that reads the platter. When I do get it to start up I can keep it running for a few minutes before it locks up again. I'm desperately trying to back up my projects and I hope I'm not damaging my drive every time it makes that noise on startup. The Hardware Test CD (v1.2.5, old) finds no problems, but this wouldnt be the first time that SMART diagnostics have given no warning of impending death. It does sound like a bad drive, no?

If you're unsure about the old one being defective, after you get your new one you might zero the old one using the option to overwrite zeros to it, which will map out any bad sectors which might be present, then use it for archiving or as a spare/emergency boot drive if it then seems to be operating normally again. As you might suspect, I'm not one to immediately jump to the conclusion that a drive is going to die when it clicks, whirs, and won't mount or boot. Screeching or sounds similar or worse than what you heard on the linked Hitachi site are a sure sign, but sometimes strange whirring and clicking happen when the directory is fouled up and the drive goes goofy running in a "do loop" as it repeatedly searches for something it can't find. I say this from my own experiences with drives, one of which is the startup drive I'm on right now and have been running 24-7 for 9 months now after having a problem similar to yours (although I don't know what your drive sounded like).

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. What can I do with the hard drive from my broken iPod Mini?

Hello all,
A friend of mine has an iPod Mini that is broken beyond repair. However, the battery and the hard drive works fine. The question is, is there a way to utilize the hard drive as an external USB drive? If so, can anyone point me in a resource that outlines this? I have checked online but haven't had any luck.

Yeah, but I may have not descriped the issue with the iPod. He tried to replace the battery himself and broke the ribbon cable that connects the circuit board to the control wheel. The battery and HD are o.k. so I mentioned that he may be able to take the HD out and use it as a separate storage device. I thought they drives that had the same form factor as a compact flash card.
I told him to pay the 50 bucks to have Apple replace the battery but did he listen? I know it sounds like I have an imaginary friend and I did it, but really it was he that tried it on his own. <ggg>
