CD drive no longer available after installing iTunes

I have windows XP. Once iTunes has been installed, the
CD-Rom drives cease to be available in the windows explorer.
I'm not desperate to run iTunes, that wonderful software.

hi nadine!

i see you've got a Packard Bell. could you check something for me? go into your Device Manager (right-click "My Computer", select "Manage", select "Device Manager"), and check to see if you've got a warning/alert message showing up next to your optical drives referencing "code 41".
if you do see a code 41 in there, this post has information on some other techniques that have been getting people past the Packard Bell code 41 optical drive disappearances:

  • Optical drive no longer available before installing iTunes

Before installing iTunes and reeboting the computer, the optical drive dissapears from the system. It´s neccesary to reinstall the operating system to have access to it.
I believe that Roxio´s Easy CD Creator and iTunes may have any kind of conflict.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

If you have XP you can use this : http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scriptsdesc/xp_cd_dvdfix.htm
but actually, unless you have some compelling need for Roxio I suggest you dump it.
If XP and iTunes can't handle all your burning needs then a program like Imgburn or CDburnerXP can be use in addition.

  • My ImageClass MF4380dn Cannon Multifunction Copier driver no longer works after installing Mavericks. How can I resolve this?

My Image Class MF4380dn Cannon Multifunction Copier driver no longer works after installing Mavericks. I have checked with Cannon and they do not list my partricular machine among their driver updates. Is there another place to download a driver suitable for Mavericks?

Your MF4380dn is supported by the latest UFR2 v10.4.0 driver that supports 10.9. Here is a link from the Canon Australia web site,
    http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100491502.html
Before installing this driver, please remove the MF4380 from Printers & Scanners (unless you have already performed the reset that Carolyn mentions which will remove it for you). Then run the v10.4.0 installer and when it has completed, open Printers & Scanners and add the MF4380.

  • Re: Satellite P - CD/DVD drive has been disabled after installing itunes 8

*Help*! After installing itunes 8 my CD/DVD/RW has been disabled.
This has happened before and I have restored it by deleting the upper and lower filters in the Vista registry but then itunes tells me that "The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing." and I am unable to burn anything from itunes.
Does anyone out there know how to restore the CD/DVD/RW drive and retain the full use of itunes please?

Have you tried to reinstall iTunes?
Reinstall the old iTunes, reboot the computer and clean by using CCleaner. Then you can install the newest version of iTunes.
If it doesnt work try to remove the upper- and lower filters again. Maybe you should do this after you have reinstalled iTunes.
Last but not least, this could be useful for you:

  • Optical drive doesn't work after installing itunes 11.0.5.5

After updating to iTunes 11.0.5.5 my optical drive does not work. I have put the same CD in another PC and it works fine. When I right click on the optical disc drive in 'Computer' I get the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." If a CD is in the drive, the drive will either keep popping open or not open at all on its own. The CD will not open in any other player such as Windows Media Player either.

    I read this article:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php/CD/DVD_drives_disappear_after_install ing_iTunes
I did not have any AFS drivers.
This is what I did and my optical drive is now working:
    1. Backed up iTunes
    2. Unistalled iTunes
    3. Tried to install iTunes 10.7 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes
    4. When iTunes tried to launch I received the message "iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
    5. My computer would not recongize the optical drive at all now
    6. I re-installed iTunes 11.0.5 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes
    7. All my iTunes data is there and my optical drive works now
Note: I should clarify that before uninstalling iTunes 11.0.5 my optical drive worked sometimes. It would play maybe one song, both in iTunes and Windows Media Player and then stop working. The drive would also pop open on its own whether there was a disc in there or not. Also sometimes I had to manually open the drive with a paper clip.

  • ITouch no longer syncs after install iTunes 11.1.3.8/ iStore Authorization problem

I installed iTunes 11.1.3.8 last Monday on my daughter's computer.
While I was at work on Tuesday, my daughter connected her iTouch to the computer.  My wife reported that all her music was missing and she was trying to put everything back.  Subsequently, all the songs got deleted from my daughter's iPod Touch and now it appears unable to sync with the computer.
The songs are on the computer, but nothing on the iTouch.
When we try to sync, we get the following message on the computer's iTunes:  "<daughter's> iPod could not be synced because this computer is no longer authorized for purchased items that are on this iPod. To authorize this computer for items purchased from the iTunes Store, choose Store > Authorize this computer."
We have tried reauthorizing, authorizing, de-authorizing, reauthorizing... all sorts of authorizing.  No success.
Any help would be appreciated.  No iPod => my daughter is unhappy (understatement).

  • ITouch no longer recognized after installing iTunes 8 and Leopard

I recently installed the new version of iTunes, which prompted me to download the new version of Quicktime, which then prompted me to install Leopard, which I did. Now I have the new version of iTunes, but my iTouch is no longer coming up as a recognized device. My connecting cable still works because my iTouch is charging when I connect it to my Powerbook, but the device is not recognized by my computer, and I've run out of options. I have tried restarting my iTouch, and also using a different connecting cable-- nothing works. Any advice?
    Thanks a million.

    Hello,
Just wanted to make sure you've also restarted the computer, in addition to restarting the iPod touch. For the time being, try to connect the iPod with the USB cable that came with it, and make sure it's being connected directly to the computer, and not through any external USB hubs or anything of the sort. Also, if you haven't tried this, try connecting the iPod to a different USB port.
Since installing Leopard, double check your Software Updates to make sure there's nothing else pending that you might need. (Just click on Software Update in your Apple menu).
If that hasn't worked it out, you might try reinstalling Apple Mobile Device Support, which is what allows the iPod touch to communicate with your computer and iTunes.
First, drag iTunes from your Applications folder to the Trash.
    Then, delete these files:
    (1) AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg located in: Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/
    (2) AppleMobileDevice.kext located in: Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/
    Restart your computer
    Download and install iTunes again

  • Cd drive doesn't work after installing iTunes

I installed iTunes and started to try and rip cd's into the library but the cd drive isn't working any more..  Something about the driver, which I updated, or it also says the registry is incomplete for the cd drive.  I ran into this once before on another computer, but I forget how to fix this.  I tried to do a system restore to before I installed iTunes, but my computer wouldn't let me restore.  Any suggestions?

  • So long sound after installing iTunes 7.7

Upgraded to iTunes 7.7. Had no issue with the download, installed just fine. Closed down iTunes and re-opened to ensure updates were correct. Had a window pop up stating, "iTunes has detected a problem w/ audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly". This was immediately after the install of 7.7, iTunes was working properly on older version. Checked other media programs (Windows Media Player), nothing will play any audio or video files. Also tried re-booting, no luck. According to my system info, my sound card is not installed. Re-installing the sound card is separate issue, but issues of 7.7 causing this problem before? Any suggestions or tips to downgrade to older iTunes. I have a 2nd Gen. Nano if that makes a difference. (Never had issues before when upgrading versions.)

I ran disk utility from my Leopard DVD, repaired the disk. The sound worked upon restarting.

  • IPhone no longer recognized after installing iTunes 9.2

Hi there. I have an original iPhone, a Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4.11, and everything was working perfectly until I updated iTunes to 9.2. Now when I connect by iPhone to the computer literally nothing happens. The phone does not show up. It does not open iPhoto or iTunes. I have restarted my computer several times, reset the phone several times, and still nothing. I am planning to buy the new iPhone as soon as it is available, but in the meanwhile I am really concerned about not being able to sync to iTunes. I would appreciate any advice! Thanks.

I'm running OSX 10.6.4 on MacBook Pro (a couple of years old) ... and my (original) iPhone is recognized just fine by the new iTunes 9. I too am anxiously awaiting arrival of my iPhone 4 ... and got the same kind of shipment information as other folks described on the iPad; i.e. being shipped direct from China via Hong Kong. I sure hope they've got the bugs worked out of that process since the iPad 3G fiasco. I was also amused (NOT!) by "additional information" in the shipping-email I got from Apple. Basically it says that if there is a delay in activating the phone via iTunes, "trust us" that Apple and AT&T will be working to get it activated as quickly as possible and will send out an email when it is activated --- in other words "don't call us, we'll call you".
David Brooks during his commentary last night on The News Hour made some comments about how business processes are really starting to break down in this country. I couldn't agree more. Last Thursday's mess was inexcusable! You'd think that the huge (and incredibly profitable) corporations like (BP), Apple, and AT&T would spend as much time and effort and money to get their processes in as good a shape as their products! Urrrrrr! Let's hope that the iPhone enrollment process goes better.

  • After installing itunes Windows 7 doesnt boot and stalls while loading atipcie.sys driver

After installing itunes my computer stalls when loading atipcie.sys driver. Computer will not boot up in safe mode or Last known good. Only resolution was to perform System Restore to a time before itunes was installed, thus deleting the itunes installation
Anyone know of a fix or workaround for this issue ?

    Windows 7 64 bit core i7
BSOD while updating to iTunes 10 with suspended installation of Apple Mobile Device Support. Network drivers no longer working as a result. Attempted fix by downloading from a different machine and competing install via files transferred over on flash drive. No dice. Attempted removal of iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Application Support, Apple Software Update to see if this would fix. Followed this up with a restart. This seems to have improved matters as system is starting up faster. No dice. Try reinstall network drivers from Sony ViaoCare disk. Installed and restarted. No dice. Next, try Widows 7 Network and Sharing diagnostics. No dice. Next try manual removal & reinstall of network driver using Device Manager, restart. Can't seem to re-install Network Controller. Still trying to solve this.

  • Computer can't find DVD/CD-ROM drives after installing iTunes

After installing iTunes, my computer no longer can detect my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives. They've disappeared from the "My Computer" window.
I ran "System Restore" and the disc drives showed up, but now they're undetected once again after I re-installed iTunes. I've restarted, I've uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes, I've run the built-in diagnostic self-checks on the drives, I downloaded updated drivers, I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, spent 1 hour on the phone with Apple support, and finally spent 2 hours on the phone with Dell Support. Nothing. Please help--I want to be able to use my iPod with Windows.

Hey there. May I interject? Anyone mind?
For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
    A) an application (such as Roxio, Nero, iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
    or
    B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, the thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal
I don't know if this will help, I think it should.
Good Luck. Post back if you have a problem.

  • After installing iTunes 10, external drive error

The library which the previous iTunes 9 was connected to is on my external WD 2TB drive. After installing iTunes 10, I played around with the interface for a few minutes, and then I shut my computer off.
This morning, I turned on my computer and my external drive loaded up. But when it opened iTunes and started reading, the external started to be read, and it ejected automatically... and error window popped up warning me that it wasn't ejected properly.
From then on, this kept on occurring. The drive loads up but after a few minutes it gets ejected again. I don't know what happened.
I checked with Disk Utilities, and there was zero problems.
Could someone help me with this problem? I have changed to different firewire cables from very short, to long etc but still the same issues. I don't want to keep doing this as it might corrupt all my data...many years of of collected photos, music, movies etc...as well as a major part of my work files.
This is so sad, and I just wished I bought a second drive to clone the one I have. Lesson learnt.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)
