CD Drive no longer reading.
About a month ago, my CD/DVD drive stopped working. I could hear the disc spin, and the laptop would make a noise like it usually did, but after that - nothing. The drive wouldn't even show up on the Computer folder with the rest of my hardware.
I performed an indepth virus scan, and found a rather severe trojan which was removed immediately. Afterwards, the drive started to work again.
Now - it's stopped once more. I have no trojans or viruses, and my laptop is not even that old so I couldn't imagine the lens or anything being broken or scratched. I clean it often, so not dirty either. I have an HP Pavillion dv6500, does anyone had any advice as to how to fix this problem? I would like to avoid having to purchase another drive as much as possible.
It is a bad piece of hardware. You have eliminated all other possibilities. You need to replace the optical drive. In the meantime you can install the software across a network by making the optical drive on another computer within the network shared and access the files on the disk from the laptop. Or you can get a usb dvd drive or you can copy the contents of the cd onto a flash drive and install from there.

After going through the 10.5.6 upgrade, the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E on my 2.16 Intel MacBook is no longer recognizing music CD's. Bought 3 new CD's just before upgrading and they aren't recognized now, as well as older CD's I own. DVD's and software CD/DVD's seem to work fine however.
Any ideas on why and how to correct the issue? Is there a firmware update for the Matshita DVD drives used by Apple?

I could burn a disc, and when it finished, it wouldn't mount. I would reboot, and while the disc would then mount, the iMac said it was not the proper format. (Even though it was just burned on the Mac).
A new drive eliminated this problem, so I would ask, how old is your computer?
Mine was a little over two years old when it started this, and it took four months to completely die on me. -

I've only had my laptop about a month and a half. To transfer items from my old laptop to the new one, I used the CD/DVD drive to copy items over. It worked beautifully at that time.
Tonight, I went to install a new program I just received. Its on CD-ROM. I placed it in the drive, it popped up with the "run or open" prompt. Pretty straight forward and normal. I clicked run/install and... the drive started making noises like it was either off balance or hung up or... something. After waiting much longer than it should have taken to read the disc, I just clicked the button to open the drive (and essentially cancel the install). No problem, the disc slowed like normal and the drive popped open.
Hmmm... So I did a reboot. Tried again. The run or open prompt came up. I canceled it this time, and went into the computer and right clicked the CD/DVD drive (where it showed the proper title of the disc) and clicked open. IT made the weird noises again and... nothing. I closed out the computer prompt, tried to open the drive again to stop it, and this time i had no luck. It just... sat there. So I ended up doing reboot.
Reboot. Got the disc out. Decided to try the disc in a different computer. Maybe I got a bad program. Nope. It worked like a charm, ready to install elsewhere.
I went BACK to my HP, tried the disc a third time. This time... nothing. No prompt. I went into Computer. No CD title in the CD drive. I clicked on it, and it started spinning (again making the weird hung up/off balance noise) and eventually came back saying there is no disc in the drive.
My various steps to fix things have included:
-- making sure all the drivers, BIOS, etc. updates are installed. All are up to date.
-- Did a system restore point a couple weeks back to see if that helped. No luck. Undid the restore point.
-- Microsoft Fix-It thing. Couldn't do anything because it would never read that there was a disc in the drive in the first place!
-- Did HP System Troubleshooting. Same problem as the Microsoft Fix-It EXCEPT when I used a blank CD-R.
-- Eventually did get it to also read a DVD-R disc. Seems willing to write to disc, but not read???
-- Uninstalled the DVD/CD drive in Device Manager. Let it reinstall the drivers on its own.
-- I've tried an audio CD, a video DVD, the program I am trying to install, and the blank discs. The only things it will read now if the blank discs. (And even then, it takes a few minutes to do that.)
In device manager, it is listed as "hp DVDRAM GT31L SATA CdRom Device."
I'm at my wits end. ANY suggestions I've not tried? Frankly, I NEED to install this program to do my job. This needs to be fixed, like, yesterday.It is a bad piece of hardware. Hi folks, never really had a terrible problem with this computuer until the last few months with the battery wearing out and having to replace the charging cord twice but now it seems like I have a problem here.
Earlier today, less than an hour ago, i burned a CD for my buddy, when i went to burn the second disk, it didnt want to accept it. Finally, when it did, it wouldnt read I had a disk in it. When i got home, i tried other cds/dvds and it wouldnt read them either. It was making a rather bad sound, kind of like an alarm sound. The CD will not spin and is ejeceted shortly after.
I was planning on bootcamping my Macbook Pro later this weekend, but if i can not get this to work, I wont be able to. I dont think i have Apple Care and the nearest apple store is about a 2 hour drive from my house.

Equium L300 CD/DVD Drive no longer reads disks
There is already a thread with a similar problem to this with a different model, but it seems to have died.
The CD/DVD drive on my Equium L300-148 now refuses to read disks. It seems to burn them still, which is strange.
That must mean the laser has not burnt out, and the drivers seem to be working correctly.
I can see the drive in Explorer and I can eject it with the context menu.
I have tried a "Disable" then "Enable" in the Device Manager, but I have not tried uninstalling the drive then restarting.
Any help would be apreciated.Hello
To make things clear: there are no much options you can try. You can try to remove optical disc drive from device manager and restart the notebook. The drive will be recognized automatically and the drive will be ready for use.
Can you tell us more about this issue?
Which formats you have tried to open? DVD movies, music CDs, different data files?
Is there some error message?
If you don't have external HDD you can save all important data onto empty DVD medias.
Of course the best way to check functionality is to set factory settings again, but if you don't want to do this it makes things more complicated.
What you can do is to contact nearest service provider. They can install recovery image on separate HDD and test the functionality. If there is some serious problem the drive will be replaced for free (if the warranty is still valid). -

MBA no longer reads the external drive - can anyone help?

My MBA no longer reads the external iOmega HD. I use the iOmega to store all my files and for the TimeMachine.
My old Powerbook G4 continues can read it so it's not a problem with the external drive. Also, the MBA can read another external drive that I have. So the problem is specific to this MBA and iOmega drive. I suspect, but am not sure that the problem is due to a recent system update.
Can anyone figure what went wrong?

is the drive being powered from the usb port? perhaps it is just on the limit of the power the mba can supply, can you try it with an external power supply? -

Here is a post I assembled for another with a similar problem:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Workarounds:
1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
3. Upgrade to an Intel compatible versions of your software, or find alternatives that will open your data files;
3. Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount" and "diskutil info disk2." Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1." I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help? Thank you. blelambert

Won't eject disc- drive no longer recognized by system- 1-week old iMac!
Tried to burn something in Toast- I put in a blank DVD, and all **** breaks loose...
As long as the machine is powered up, I hear this slow "chugging" of the Superdrive, about a 4-second cycle, and in System Profiler, this is what I see:
"No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
Tried to eject the disk by holding down the mouse at startup- no dice. OK, how do I eject a disc when the drive "doesn't exist", according to the system?
I don't want to reboot more than needed because I'm getting white screens and other joys when I try to do that...
Please help! It's a long drive to the nearest Apple Store...Well, a call to Apple seems to have fixed the problem;this was the sequence:
1) shut down
2) unplug everything but keyboard and mouse (I only had a wireless keyboard handy)
3) restart, holding down P-R-Option- Cmd (Apple key)- AKA zapping or resetting the PRAM
4) keep holding down the keys, wait for 4 startup "chimes"- I only got 2 before it completed booting despite my holding down the keys
5) all seemed OK at this point; the drive would inject/read/eject a commercially made disc, as well as a blank disc
6) shut down the machine again, unplugged the mouse and the power cable (had I used a wired keyboard, this too), and waited what seemed to be about 3 minutes; this was resetting the System Management Controller
7) plug the power cable an mouse back in, restart normally
Now I have to see just what device(s) might have contributed to the problem... I had a USB drive, a Firewire drive, and an older powered hub with which I attach my printer, EyeTV 250, a mouse, and occasionally, my iPods (shuffle & video) or thumb drives.

Can this method be used to install 10.6.8 or later software on a MacBook running 10.5.8 whose CD drive no longer works?
Assuming it's not a Gray Machine specific Install Disc, it should work.

My Image Class MF4380dn Cannon Multifunction Copier driver no longer works after installing Mavericks. I have checked with Cannon and they do not list my partricular machine among their driver updates. Is there another place to download a driver suitable for Mavericks?
Your MF4380dn is supported by the latest UFR2 v10.4.0 driver that supports 10.9. Here is a link from the Canon Australia web site,

Before installing this driver, please remove the MF4380 from Printers & Scanners (unless you have already performed the reset that Carolyn mentions which will remove it for you). Then run the v10.4.0 installer and when it has completed, open Printers & Scanners and add the MF4380. -
My internal hard drive no longer boots. Boots just fine in external usb enclosure.
My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop. The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure. It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
I have tried:
with disk utilities
•fixing permissions
•repairing disk
in single user mode
•fsck -fy
zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed. I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

Have a HP dc4223cl with a Mat**bleep**a uj840d. As of today, drive no longer seen by system. Device manager states driver is O.K. but device is not attached? Best way to find drive and re-install?? Thanks

Drive no longer available as TM target in Mountain Lion
With Lion, I had an external drive attached to my Mac Mini Server and used it as a network Time Machine target to backup my laptop. I just upgraded my Mac Mini Server to Mountain Lion with the Server upgrade and now the drive no longer shows up as a target.
I read through all pages at http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html, reformatted the drive, double-check File Sharing permissions, and it still doesn't show up. It mounts just fine on the client laptop through Finder. Has something changed in Mountain Lion?Sounds like the same problem I'm having. My external drive mounts just fine on my Lion-based machines, but on my Mountain Lion machine it not only will not mount, but when I try to Repair in Disk Utility it tells me:
"Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Since it mounts fine on my Lion machines, I know there's nothing wrong with the physical disk or the filesystem, so I'm not going to the trouble of reformatting and restoring. Instead I think I'll just "upgrade" back to Lion.
I'm having several other usability issues with Mountain Lion as well. What gives with this OS, Apple??
